This past Thursday, UHM CoE Pre-Engineering Advisor Jill Nakatsu shared the nuts and bolts of academics in Manoa’s College of Engineering as well as clubs, professional societies, and activities open to UH system pre-engineers. As a Pearl City high grad, UHM CoE alum, former Medtronic engineer, and electrical engineering PhD candidate, she knows UH from the inside out and likes working with students. You can view her presentation here: NSO-engineering.ppt. Remember, all pre-engineering transfer students must meet with an advisor (like Jill or Tep Dobry) before they can register for courses!

KCC alum and civil engineering senior Tyler Katagiri also shared his perspective and practical advice on the CC-Manoa transfer experience as a student. Find his insights here: College Transfer Process_TKatagiri.pptx.

For Manoa students, the last day to withdraw from UH Spring 2013 classes is this Friday, March 8, at 4:00 pm (HST). For more information visit

http://manoa.hawaii.edu/records/register/add_drop.html#drop

For community college students, the last day to withdrawal from Spring 2013 classes, to change to a credit/no credit grade option, or to request an audit grade option is Thursday, March 21, 2013. If you are considering withdrawing from a course or changing to credit/no credit, you should talk with your instructor first and to an ‘IKE faculty or coordinator to make sure that this is the best option for you.

What is the difference between a class withdrawal and opting for a credit/no credit option?

Withdrawal will be noted on your transcript

Withdrawing from a class could affect your registration status in other classes. Ex. If you drop Calc II (Math 206) but are also taking Phys 171 and the lab, Calc II is a pre-requisite, so if it’s dropped, Phys 171 will be dropped as well.

Credit/No Credit option won’t affect your GPA

To receive credit you still need to earn a “C” or better in the course

With Credit/No credit your financial aid will not be affected.

Please note credit/no credit policies are different at each campus and may be different for each course.

Again, weighing the options for withdrawal or credit/no credit is based on your individual situation as a student, as well as the faculty’s discretion on whether they will allow a credit/ no credit option.

Please contact any of the ‘IKE coordinators if you need help or want to discuss how the above options could impact you.

Whether you’re almost graduating or just starting your quest in your engineering education, it’s never too early to intern. Don’t feel that because you haven’t started your engineering courses you can’t intern at an engineering company. Go to the career fair and talk to companies telling them that you want to gain real life, engineering experiences. Explain to them your interests, academic experiences, and goals.

Engineering companies look for students with any education experiences. Even if you are not ready to perform engineering analysis, there is plenty of work that requires basic math or basic computer skills. What’s more important is getting your foot in the door early with a company. They will give you more engineering-related tasks once you gain more experience with them. It’s never too early to experience the essentials of the engineering world such as reading plans, project deadlines, and interacting with clients.

Some companies have even hired students that have not started their core engineering classes. These students had the chance to assist in cost estimated, database management, site inspections, report writing, CAD drafting and many other tasks.

It is never too early to intern. Employers value the real life experience you will gain.

The UH Manoa College of Engineering (COE) Career Fair is coming up in 2 weeks!

When: Wednesday, February 20th, 2013 from 1pm – 4pm
Where: UH Manoa COE Holmes Hall, Ground Floor

Plan on attending the COE Career Fair even if you’re not a COE student yet. The career fair is a great opportunity to meet and talk to a number of engineering companies in one place even if you’re not necessarily ready to start an industry internship or if you’re not sure what type of engineering you want to go into. Over the next 2 weeks we will post some tips here so you can get the most out of your career fair experience whether you’re looking for a full-time job, summer internship, or just trying to figure out which engineering is the right fit for you.

Tip #1: Bring copies of your resume and hand them out AT the career fair.

While many of the current COE students may have submitted your resume to the “COE Resume Book,” don’t depend on that! Nothing replaces the impression that you make when you personally talk to a company representative at the career fair. I’ve attended a career fair as a company representative and it was easier and more efficient to remember, make recommendations to our boss, and follow up with students who talked to us and gave us resumes ON THE DAY OF THE CAREER FAIR. Companies donʻt always have the time to sift through all the resumes in the resume book. So make your impression in person!

Need to prepare a resume? Go here http://www.hawaii.edu/ike/current_students/resume.html for some guidance. We are also here to help if we want us to take a look at your resumes.

Update: ALSO, There is another resume workshop on Thursday, February 7th, 2013 at 3pm at the KCC STEM Center (Kokio 202). Bring in your existing resume and have it reviewed by a fresh pair of eyes! Or get help if you need to start a new one! We are here to help!
