Here’s my up-to-date “Human Nature” fingerstyle guitar version, Michael Jackson’s classic from the album “Thriller” (1983).

Fun fact:

This tune was written by Steve Porcaro from TOTO and wasn’t originally intended for Michael Jackson.

Quincy Jones accidentally heard a demo and loved it – the rest is history!

If you compare the style of this song to the TOTO tune “Africa,” you can hear the same guy wrote “Human Nature.”

I recorded this song in 2009 on my CD, “I Remember Michael” and I did a Youtube video of this – so the one you are watching here is a new updated version.

As with many of my songs, I arrange them, upload them, and then they go “dormant” – i.e. I’ve not yet played this in concert…so I am finding some new inspiration in it.

I recorded this song on my first jazz CD “First Impressions” in 1993!

Wow – 33 years ago!

And…I had recorded my first solo guitar / Youtube version of this about 10 years ago, but I knew I had to go deeper on it.

This tune has been with me for a long time.

Dizzy Gillespie’s version is the inspiration – slightly uptempo and seriously groovy!

The challenge here was to internalize and express all the different parts of the groove and “not just play the right notes.”

As you might know, I’m a huge Beatles fan.

I have beautiful memories of hearing this track on the original Revolver vinyl as a kid – pure magic!

My mom would play her old Beatles records for me on weekends, and they became one of my earliest musical influences.

This song is simply perfect as it is – a gorgeous melody with incredible harmonies.

I decided not to dress it up with unnecessary guitar gimmicks and just let the music speak for itself.

Simon & Garfunkel were one of my first HUGE musical inspirations, and still are.

Quincy Jones’ recent passing brought HIS version into my YouTube feed…and that sparked the passion for the arrangement.

I decided however to go straight down the middle and be true to the original.

I am enjoying working on this “new set” of Telecaster and electric guitar chops and strive to be as good as I can be…
