Rules of the Road – Tire Safety from your friends at Bob McDonald
* Check Your Tire Inflation

Proper tire inflation is essential for safe driving and long tire life. It’s wise to check your tires’ air pressure at least once a month with an accurate tire pressure gauge. Be sure to check pressure while your tires are cold and have not been used recently. Even driving a mile will cause your tire pressure to increase and give you an inaccurate reading. A continuous loss of inflation pressure may indicate a possible tire or wheel assembly problem.
* Check Your Tire Tread

Bob McDonald Goodyear suggests you check your tire tread every 3,000 miles. Here are two simple tests:

Take the Penny Test: Simply insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires.

– OR –

Check the Tread Wear Indicator Bar: Located at the bottoms of the tread grooves in several locations around the tire. When a tire is so worn that these bars become visibly flush with the adjacent tread ribs, it’s time to replace the tire.
* Know What Certain Wear Patterns Mean
– Wear on both edges: UNDERINFLATION

Underinflation increases the tread wear on a tire’s outside edges and generates excessive heat reducing tire toughness. Soft tires also increases rolling resistance which reducing fuel economy.

– Wear in center: OVERINFLATION

Overinflation increases wear on the center tread.

– Cups or dips in the tread: WORN PARTS

Cupping or dipping is most common on front tires, although rear tires can cup as well.

– Sawtooth edges: MISALIGNMENT

Misalignment causes erratic scrubbing against the road giving the tire’s edges a saw tooth or feathered appearance.

* Tire Balancing

If your tires are unbalanced, you’ll notice vibration. This can lead to driver fatigue, premature or irregular tire wear and unnecessary wear to your vehicle’s suspension. Your tires should be balanced when they are mounted on wheels for the first time or when they are remounted after repair. Check your tire balance at the first sign of vibration or shimmy.
* Vehicle Alignment

Your vehicle is properly aligned when all of its suspension and steering components are working smoothly and when its tire and wheel assemblies are running straight and true. If you notice uneven tread wear, it could be due to a misalignment and your vehicle should be serviced by a professional.
* Tire Rotation

While many people are knowledgeable enough to rotate their own tires, the procedure is especially quick and easy for a professional. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will specify the proper rotation pattern and schedule for your vehicle. If no specific schedule is indicated, a good rule of thumb is to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
* Tire Repair

Tire repairs should be made by a trained tire professional. Proper repair procedure includes dismounting the tire from the wheel. This allows for thorough inspection of the tire for damage, as well as the use of a patch and plug to repair any punctures that fall within the guidelines for repair.

Bob McDonald Goodyear in Vinings Destroyed My New Toyota Rav4

April 20th, 2008 by Greg GoodsonLeave a reply »

Interesting turn of events, and it feels like I have told this story too many times already, but one more time is fine. So to start it off, I decided to take my Toyota Rav4 to Bob McDonald’s Goodyear in Vinings on Thursday, the day before I leave, in order to check the fluids, get them to look at the tires, and make sure the car was in good shape to drive across country.

An hour later, I return to pick up the car. They changed the oil, refilled fluids, and even got a small nail out of the back right tire. Perfect. He gives me the car key, says it is already to go! I drive the car straight back from the Goodyear to my apartment, which is about a mile away, to grab some dinner, pack up the last few boxes and computer, and catch some sleep before the long 12 hour drive out to Houston.

My alarm goes off at 6:45. In an hour’s time, I throw the remainder of my stuff into the car and hit the road. Before I get onto the interstate, I decide to stop at Chick-Fil-A right across the Bob McDonald Goodyear. Grab a sweet tea and some hashbrowns, good to last me for a few hours. Get back on the road and hit the interstate. About 2 miles of being on the interstate, the oil light goes on. Interesting… I just had the oil changed yesterday. I connected the dots and realized that they must have did something wrong and the Goodyear, and decide to look for the nearest exit. About 20 seconds later, the emergency lights on the dashboard go off like fireworks, including the check engine light. I lost a good amount of control of the car as the engine at this point is going nuts. I pull over onto the side of the road, about 3 miles from where I had gotten on the interstate. Car broken down in 3 miles on a 2,500 mile trip… great!

I call AAA to come pick me up (thanks for the AAA card, Mom!) and after an hour and fifteen minutes, they scoop me up off the road. Now keep in mind that this car is a 2007, only has 25K miles on it. Its a 4 cylinder engine – it isn’t exactly powerful, but its a Toyota engine… safe to assume it should be well crafted and should last more than a year.

My Rav4 was towed back to the Bob McDonald Goodyear in Vinings. I jump out of the towtruck and march inside to explain what happened. As you can imagine, I was not happy at this point. I don’t want to point fingers, but I am pretty sure if I had not taken my car in for a “tune up”, I’d still be on the road.

After sitting in the waiting room for an hour or so, I get the news: “We put on an oil filter on your car that was improperly installed/the wrong model oil filter was put on your car. The oil filter blew off the car, and all oil was lost from the engine. At this point, the engine was still running (I was on the interstate) and because there was no oil to help with the friction, the engine seized up. We will more than likely need to replace the engine, which will cost $x,xxx and take 5 days.

I was an unhappy camper at this point. I love my car, and I also would like to stay on my trip itinerary. So much for both of those. I have committed to many people in Park City that I would be in town on the 24th to look at apartments for rent, and not only that, I need to get to Park City by the 24th to beat the moving truck there so they don’t put my few items in storage. What a headache. I have taken my car to various Goodyear’s around Atlanta, and have never really been satisfied and I am starting to question why I went back. I need to stick with Jiffy Lube.

Bob McDonald’s Goodyear, who admitted that it was their fault, and that they were sorry, wanted to put in an engine that had “equal wear and tear” to the engine in my car that had just died by way of them putting on the wrong oil filter. That would mean that they would replace the engine with n engine, more than likely not a Toyota engine, that already had 25K-30K miles on it. Yeah, right. I was not going to see that car leave there without a brand new Toyota manufactured engine.

So push comes to shove, many phone calls are made back and forth through insurance adjusters, different Toyota dealers, Bob McDonald Goodyear in Vinings, and at the end of a very long and frustrating day, I receive the following:

A brand new, Toyota manufactured engine

A rental car (Toyota Highlander) all paid for for the next 7 days

Delivery of my Rav4 out to Utah once it is fixed

Sounds like a good deal, and ultimate for the situation, it is. However, Friday was a giant pain in the ass, probably one of the longest days I have had in a while. I was on the phone pretty much the whole day trying to resolve the situation with the many people that were involved. I had to take MARTA down to the Atlanta Airport, sit in the Hertz line behind 10 other people, get the car I wanted, etc. I drove the car back to my fraternity house on Georgia Tech campus, where I finally got some food in me (the last time I had eaten was the hashbrowns in the morning). Feel asleep on a couch until 6:30am.

I am sitting in a friend’s house in Houston. I got here yesterday in just under 12 hours… two stops for gas and one stop for food. Great timing! The rental car is nice, but I miss my Rav4. I will hang here for the day, and hit the road again Monday morning.

Update: it took almost 3 months and $20K+ dollars to fix, but I finally got the car in Utah. They had to ship a brand new 2007 engine from the Toyota factory in Japan by boat to America, as none of the engine was salvageable. It was installed by a Toyota dealer (Bob McDonald, hands off!), and then the car was shipped to Utah on a semi. The whole time I was in 3 rental vehicles, all of which were pretty bad. It was determined that the fault was on Bob McDonald Goodyear. If they can’t get an oil change correct, I don’t know what else they could screw up. I could have gotten into a serious accident. Buyer beware!

As a response to this story we would like just to take time out to reply.

Greg ‎ – Jun 15, 2008

Bob McDonald Goodyear in Vinings ruined my car What the title says… they “put on the wrong oil filter” on my SUV. The next day I am driving down the interstate and the filter comes off the car, and the engine seizes up on I-285 traffic. I turned on the emergency lights as fast as I could and pulled off to the shoulder, almost getting creamed by a semi and a pick up truck (I had very little control of the car). Push comes to shove, they tell me what happened and took blame, but that was April 19th, it is June 15th, and I still don’t have my car. They are shipping a new engine from Toyota in Japan because the engine got so destroyed and it probably won’t be ready for another month. Thanks for nothing!

Seeing as he does this sort of stuff / SEO SEM Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization as a profession, this was a REALLY do a good job doing this to make Bob McDonald look bad. Okay the job is done. We’ve more than paid for this debt and spend every time someone searches for Bob McDonald Goodyear make sure his article gets read. We’ve ask him to removed this article out of good gesture to let people know he was okay with the new management and policies at Bob McDonald Goodyear but he refused.

Yes. We did the wrong thing and admit it. BUT we also paid for it. Bought a NEW engine, Shipped it form the manufacture in Asia. Paid for your rental car. Fix it free of charge and paid to have it shipped to you. It take a BIG person to scream about people that mess-up but a even BIGGER person to admit they were wrong and pay for it more than once over. Since the time that this persons automobile had trouble we’ve replace our staff and implemented new standards and double checks for the way we do thing.

Quality People and Service that really CARE about people and the cars they work on. A lot of people talk about this review or that review. what must people are not aware of is that most of these bad review are written by competitors hiding behind a computer and telling tale tells of events that never happened to scare people from going to the store your reviewing about. It happens to every business on the internet. there are even people and companies out there that do this for a living more than less people with fake screen names and fake reviews to damage a business reputation. If you want to find out about a business for real cal the Better Business Bureau, ask people that have actually been there, Talk to the business itself. if you EVER have a problem with ANY business talk to the management or owners. Having a problem with a price get an estimate and shop around. If you STILL have a problem then don’t go back. Bob McDonald works with our customers and help point out safety issue with any job. We Price match and if we can’t do the work then we will help you with who can. Above all we are here to help you. Call around then call us.

Since posting this article we’ve received nothing but really bashing comments from people in Virginia, California, New Jersey, all stating they would never bring their cars into our shop. Those are really great distances to travel just to get your new tires or your oil changed. Rather than judging this posting and article which was found very quickly within a few hours of posting and reading the posting correctly and these people would rather bash the posting just to say how horrible it is. After reading over the comments and reviewing them ready to answer such blog bashing when we will provide answers. The blog is well aware of the Constitution and does not need a history lesson about posting everyone’s opinion. Remember blogs have many things written on them everyday that people hate about them.

As for companies that screw up, hot coffee gets spilled, celebrities get burned, brakes stop working on new cars, but people are still eating hamburgers, drinking sodas and driving new cars. People will still get new tires, car repairs and great customer service at Bob McDonald. We have great loyal customers and a great service department. We stand by that.

Thanks for reading.
