In our reading today, Ephesians 4:17-21— Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,

In a sermon, “Escape From Futility,” John Piper details “six levels of evil in my own heart that stand in opposition to Christ and the work he is doing.” Then he asks:

What Is the Escape from Futility? But even though there is no man or woman or book or seminar or program that can save me from the disease and futility of my own deep depravity, God can. It IS possible not to live in futility. That’s what Paul assumes when he says in verse 17: “Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.” There is an escape from futility! What is it? He begins his answer in verses 20–21. The reason, he says, that you must not follow the Gentiles in futility is that, “You did not so learn Christ [then he mentions what he is assuming!], assuming that your have heard of him [literally: not ‘heard OF’ but ‘heard’: assuming you have heard him] and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus.” What is the escape from futility this morning? It is hearing the voice of Jesus and being taught by him (verse 21). If you have heard him and if you have been taught by him, you need not and you must not walk in futility. Jesus said, “The hour is coming, AND NOW IS, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25). No longer alienated from the life of God. Jesus Christ has spoken this morning in the truth of his Word. He has diagnosed our disease, and now he gives himself as a cure and as a teacher to everyone who hears his voice and becomes his pupil. On another occasion he said, “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me; and I give them eternal life” (John 10:16). If you hear the voice of Jesus this morning, and not just my voice, and if you follow him (like a sheep follows a shepherd), then you will no longer be alienated from the life of God. Nothing will be futile for you any more. He will make you live forever in the presence of God and every detail of your ordinary life will have meaning in him. The text ends with these great words: “The truth is in Jesus.” And Jesus said, “The truth will make you free.” Free from hardness and darkness and ignorance and licentiousness and uncleanness and alienation. The truth shall set you free from futility. And the truth is in Jesus. The door to his hospital and to his school is open this morning. And I urge you in his name, become his trusting patient and become his eager pupil.

John Piper, in a sermon, “The Son of God at 12 Years Old” helps us understand our passage for today, Luke 2:41-52-

….our text has important implications for understanding the divinity of Christ. It helps us understand what Paul meant when he said, “Though he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6, 7). One of the things Christ emptied himself of was omniscience. He said concerning the time of his return (Matthew 24:36), “Of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven nor the Son, but the Father only.” Similarly, here in our text Jesus is not just playing games with the scribes. His questions aim to gain insight, for verse 52 says, “He increased in wisdom.”

But it is not easy to imagine how Christ can be God and not be omniscient. Evidently the incarnate Christ was able somehow to bracket or limit the actual exercise of his divine powers so that he had the personality of God (basically, the motives and will of God), but the powers of knowing all and the infinite strength of God he somehow restrained. They were his potentially, and thus he was God; but he surrendered their use absolutely, and so he was man.

Therefore the child standing before us here in the temple is not so different that he can’t serve as an example for us and our children.

In our Bible reading passage today, 1 Kings 12, we read that after Jeroboam joined the people, they asked King Rehoboam to “lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.” (vs 4) Notice that they didn’t ask that he end it altogether, just that he lessen the load. If he would they will be happy to renew the covenant of service with him.

Coty Pinckney comments:

Solomon’s advisors suggest that Rehoboam agree to this, but his personal advisors tell him this is his chance to assert his authority, and that he should be strict.

Rehoboam replies to the people, saying:

“My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.”

He clearly had never read How to Win Friends and Influence People. More importantly, Rehoboam paid no attention to God’s law. His leadership should have been based on his relationship to God, on his character, and on love for the people; instead he tried to impress the people with his power and brutality.

So the king did not listen to the people; for it was a turn of events from the LORD, that He might establish His word, which the LORD spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. (1 Kings 11:15 NASB)

Note that God was behind this action of Rehoboam, “that he might establish His word.” Think about this:

Did Rehoboam choose to answer this way? Yes!

Was Rehoboam responsible for the way he answered? Yes!

Was God behind the scenes ensuring that His word came about as planned? Yes!

God ordained the outcome. And Rehoboam was responsible for the outcome. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s sovereignty and man’s accountability. There is mystery here – but we must always recognize both truths. God is in control. We are accountable before Him.
