Episode 503: Disappearing Folk Singer Connie Converse

Connie Converse, born Elizabeth Eaton Converse in 1924 in New Hampshire, was a pioneering American singer-songwriter who created intimate, literate folk and art songs in 1950s New York City years before the commercial singer-songwriter era. A gifted polymath who dropped out of Mount Holyoke College to pursue writing and music, she recorded dozens of original compositions on reel-to-reel tape—wry, harmonically sophisticated tracks like “How Sad, How Lovely,” “Talkin’ Like You (Two Tall Mountains),” and “Roving Woman”—that blended folk, blues, jazz, and classical influences. Despite a brief 1954 television appearance on Walter Cronkite’s show and salon performances, she found no commercial success and quit music in 1961, relocating to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she worked as an editor for the Journal of Conflict Resolution and became a dedicated social justice activist focused on conflict resolution and anti-racism. Struggling with depression, health issues, and professional setbacks, she turned 50 on August 3, 1974, and one week later drove away in her green Volkswagen Beetle after mailing farewell letters to family and friends stating she was starting a new life elsewhere and did not want to be found. Neither she nor her car was ever seen again, leaving her disappearance one of music’s great unsolved mysteries. Her work was rediscovered in the 2000s through preserved home recordings, leading to the 2009 album How Sad, How Lovely, widespread acclaim as a precursor to artists like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and a growing cult following that continues to celebrate her timeless voice and enigmatic legacy.

On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a legendary 729-foot Great Lakes ore carrier known as the “Mighty Fitz,” tragically sank in a violent storm on Lake Superior, claiming the lives of all 29 crew members in one of the most infamous maritime disasters in American history. Carrying over 26,000 tons of taconite pellets from Superior, Wisconsin, toward Detroit, the ship disappeared suddenly without a distress call after its final radio message to the nearby SS Arthur M. Anderson: “We are holding our own.” Official investigations pointed to massive flooding through damaged or ineffective hatch covers overwhelmed by towering waves and hurricane-force winds, though theories involving possible grounding near Six Fathom Shoal, rogue waves, or structural failure persist. Discovered in 530 feet of water in Canadian waters, the wreck lies broken into two sections with no bodies recovered, prompting significant safety reforms in Great Lakes shipping. Immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting ballad, the tragedy endures as a powerful reminder of nature’s fury and the enduring legacy of the brave mariners who sailed the inland seas.

After stints as a writer for Red Skelton and host of the game show Who Do You Trust?, he took over as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show in 1962, succeeding Jack Paar. For the next 30 years until his retirement in 1992, Carson defined the late-night talk show format with his sharp monologues, witty interviews, celebrity guests, and signature charm, drawing millions of viewers nightly and launching the careers of countless comedians. His cool, understated style made him a cultural institution, earning him numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Episode 500: Bank Robber John Wojtowicz – Dog Day Afternoon

In August 1972, John Wojtowicz, a Vietnam War veteran and openly gay man living in Brooklyn, orchestrated a botched bank robbery at a Chase Manhattan branch in Gravesend to raise money for his transgender partner Elizabeth Eden’s (formerly Ernest Aron) gender-affirming surgery. Accompanied by accomplices Salvatore Naturile and Robert Westenberg (who fled early), the heist quickly unraveled when the vault held far less cash than expected, triggering a silent alarm and leading to a dramatic 14-hour televised hostage standoff involving seven bank employees. Wojtowicz, charismatic and desperate, negotiated with police and the FBI, ordered pizza for hostages (paid for with stolen money), tossed cash to cheering crowds outside, and publicly declared his motive on live TV in an era shortly after Stonewall. The siege ended in gunfire at JFK Airport, where Naturile was killed by agents and Wojtowicz was arrested. Sentenced to 20 years but serving only five, Wojtowicz’s story—framed by him as an act of romantic sacrifice—inspired Sidney Lumet’s Oscar-winning 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino as a fictionalized “Sonny Wortzik.” Wojtowicz later criticized the movie for inaccuracies but embraced his folk-hero status, living out his later years in relative obscurity until his death from cancer in 2006 at age 60.

Hagsploitation, also known as psycho-biddy horror, Grande Dame Guignol, or hag horror, is a distinctive subgenre of psychological thriller and horror cinema that peaked in the 1960s and early 1970s. It centers on aging women—often former glamorous Hollywood stars—who descend into madness, obsession, or violence, typically in decaying mansions or isolated settings, blending campy melodrama with Gothic terror and themes of jealousy, obsolescence, and the societal fear of women’s aging. Sparked by the massive success of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), starring real-life rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford as feuding sisters, the genre gave older actresses like Davis, Crawford, Olivia de Havilland, and Shelley Winters meaty, over-the-top roles in an industry that otherwise sidelined them after middle age. While criticized for its potentially misogynistic portrayal of older women as monstrous or pitiful “hags,” it also subversively empowered these performers through iconic, unrestrained performances and offered sharp commentary on Hollywood’s ageism and patriarchal discard of women past their youth. The subgenre’s influence persists in modern films like X (2022), Pearl (2022), and The Substance (2024), which revisit tropes of aging rage and bodily decay.

Episode 498: The Murder of Sylvia Likens

In July 1965, 16-year-old Sylvia Likens and her younger sister Jenny were left in the care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a divorced mother of several children, in Indianapolis, Indiana, while their parents worked as traveling carnival concessionaires. What began as temporary boarding quickly escalated into three months of horrific, incremental torture inflicted by Baniszewski, several of her children (notably Paula and John Jr.), and neighborhood youths. Sylvia endured severe beatings, starvation, malnourishment, burns from cigarettes and scalding water, cuts, branding, sexual humiliation, and mutilation—including the words “I’m a prostitute” carved into her abdomen—before she died on October 26, 1965, from a combination of subdural hematoma (brain injury from blows to the head), shock, and extensive injuries. Police discovered her emaciated, battered body in an upstairs bedroom, describing the case as one of the most sadistic crimes in Indiana history. Baniszewski and several accomplices were convicted in 1966.

Episode 497: Serial Killer Richard Cottingham – The Torso Killer

Richard Cottingham, born November 25, 1946, is an American serial killer infamously known as the “Torso Killer” or “Times Square Ripper” due to his gruesome acts of mutilation, dismemberment, and torture in several murders. Active primarily from the mid-1960s through 1980 across New York and New Jersey, he targeted women, including sex workers in New York City’s Times Square area and others in suburban locations. Cottingham was arrested in May 1980 after being caught in the act in a motel, leading to convictions for multiple murders—including high-profile cases involving dismembered torsos left in hotels—and sentences of multiple life terms without parole. He is confirmed to have killed at least 19 women, with convictions for nine and additional confessions (including cold cases from as early as 1965 and into the 1970s) obtained in later years through interviews while imprisoned, such as admissions in 2022 to five Long Island murders and more recent confessions in 2026 to older New Jersey cases. Authorities believe his total victim count may be higher, though claims of up to 80–100 killings are considered exaggerated. Cottingham, who outwardly lived as a family man and computer operator, continues to serve his sentences in a New Jersey prison.

Sean Vincent Gillis was an American serial killer active in Louisiana during the 1990s, primarily in the Baton Rouge area. Between 1994 and 2003, Gillis murdered eight women, many of whom were vulnerable or marginalized, including sex workers. His crimes were marked by extreme violence, necrophilia, and post-mortem mutilation, setting him apart even amid a region plagued by multiple serial offenders at the time. Gillis was arrested in 2004 after DNA evidence linked him to several killings, and he later confessed to the murders. In 2008, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, closing one of Louisiana’s most disturbing criminal chapters.

John Todd (1949–2007), also known by aliases like John Todd Collins or Lance Collins, was an American conspiracy theorist and public speaker active mainly in the 1970s evangelical Christian circuit. He claimed to have been born into a prominent witchcraft family (the Collins line, allegedly tied to Salem), risen to become a high-ranking Grand Druid priest and member of the Illuminati (a supposed secret Satanic elite group controlling world events), and even involved in occult activities like human sacrifices and funding schemes. After a dramatic conversion to Christianity, he toured churches warning audiences of a vast Satanic/Illuminati plot to take over the world, corrupt youth through rock music (which he called a demonic tool funded by the Illuminati), and target Christians—urging preparation like arming themselves for an impending upheaval.

His sensational stories, spread via widely circulated audio tapes, influenced early modern conspiracy culture, including fears of hidden elites, Satanic influence in media, and government-occult ties. However, his claims were widely regarded as fabrications or delusions; investigations and reports (including from Christian publications) debunked them, and he faced legal troubles, including a conviction leading to prison time. He died in a psychiatric facility in 2007. Many view him as a pioneer of contemporary conspiracy narratives that echo in later phenomena like QAnon.

Writing primarily in the 1920s and 1930s, Howard published extensively in pulp magazines like Weird Tales, producing not only fantasy but also horror, historical adventure, and boxing stories with a raw, muscular prose style. Deeply influenced by history, myth, and his experiences growing up in small-town Texas, Howard’s work often explored themes of civilization versus barbarism, fate, and personal strength. Though his life was tragically short—ending in suicide at age 30—his legacy has only grown, inspiring countless novels, comics, films, and games, and cementing him as one of the most influential figures in modern fantasy literature.

Pedro Alonso López, known as the Monster of the Andes, was a Colombian serial killer born in 1948. He endured a traumatic childhood marked by abuse, homelessness, and sexual assault, which contributed to his later crimes. Active primarily in the late 1970s across Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, López targeted young girls (mostly aged 8-12 from poor or indigenous families). He lured them with gifts, raped them, and strangled them, often deriving pleasure from their fear. He confessed to over 300 murders, though authorities verified a minimum of 110 in Ecuador (where he led police to dozens of graves). He was arrested in 1980 after a failed abduction, convicted of multiple murders, and sentenced to 16 years (Ecuador’s maximum at the time). Released early in 1994 for good behavior, he was deported to Colombia, institutionalized briefly as insane, declared sane, and freed on bail in 1998. López disappeared shortly after in 1999, and his whereabouts remain unknown as of 2026, with occasional unconfirmed rumors of sightings or vigilante justice.

Prince Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein began in 1999 after an introduction by Ghislaine Maxwell, quickly evolving into a close social friendship that included frequent meetings, travel on Epstein’s private jet (the “Lolita Express”), visits to his properties (including Little St. James island), and hosting Epstein and Maxwell at royal residences such as Windsor Castle and Balmoral. Despite Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring a minor for prostitution, Andrew maintained contact, most notably visiting him in New York in December 2010 shortly after his release and being photographed walking together in Central Park—an encounter Andrew later described as an attempt to formally end the friendship out of a sense of “honour.” Andrew has always insisted the relationship was not particularly intimate and expressed regret only for its continuation post-conviction, while denying any knowledge of or involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities. The association, however, became the defining controversy of Andrew’s later life, leading to serious allegations from Virginia Giuffre, the disastrous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, his withdrawal from public duties, a multimillion-pound civil settlement, and ultimately the complete stripping of his royal titles and privileges.

Episode 490: Andrew Kehoe and the Bath School Massacre

The Bath School disaster, carried out by Andrew Kehoe on May 18, 1927, remains the deadliest school massacre in U.S. history. In the small town of Bath, Michigan, Kehoe—a school board member and local farmer—spent months secretly planting hundreds of pounds of dynamite and pyrotol beneath the Bath Consolidated School. That morning, some of the explosives detonated, killing students and teachers and injuring dozens, though nearly half of the bombs failed to explode. Shortly afterward, Kehoe drove a truck loaded with additional explosives to the scene, where he detonated it, killing himself and several others, including the school superintendent. In total, 45 people were killed, most of them children. Investigators later uncovered Kehoe’s financial troubles, obsession with taxation, and deep resentment toward the school system, as well as a chilling sign left on his property reading, “Criminals are made, not born,” underscoring the premeditated nature of the attack.

Episode 484: American Indian Residential Schools

American Indian residential schools, also known as Indian boarding schools, were a system of government-funded institutions in the United States designed to assimilate Native American children into Euro-American culture from the late 19th century through much of the 20th century. Established primarily after the Civil War, these schools—over 500 in total, often run by churches—aimed to “civilize” Indigenous youth by eradicating their languages, traditions, and identities, encapsulated in the infamous motto “Kill the Indian, save the man.” The first major school, Carlisle Indian Industrial School, opened in 1879 in Pennsylvania and served as a model for others nationwide. Children as young as five were forcibly removed from their families, sometimes hundreds of miles away, and subjected to harsh conditions: they were forbidden from speaking native languages, wearing traditional clothing, or practicing cultural rituals. Reports document widespread physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, malnutrition, disease outbreaks, and high mortality rates—thousands of children died, often buried in unmarked graves. The system lasted until the 1970s, when public outcry and Native activism led to its decline, though many schools operated into the 1990s. The legacy endures as intergenerational trauma, contributing to higher rates of poverty, substance abuse, and mental health issues in Native communities. Recent federal investigations, including a 2022 U.S. Department of the Interior report, have acknowledged these atrocities and called for reparations and healing efforts.

David Bieber is an American-born former Marine and bodybuilder who became a notorious criminal in both the U.S. and the U.K. After being linked to a 1995 murder in Florida, Bieber fled the country under a stolen identity. In 2003, while living in England, he shot three West Yorkshire police officers—killing PC Ian Broadhurst and severely injuring the others—after being pulled over for a routine traffic stop. He was arrested shortly after and later sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole-life tariff, making him one of the U.K.’s most infamous cop killers.

Born in 1942 and raised in Tucson, Schmid cultivated an eccentric persona—wearing makeup, dyeing his hair jet-black, stuffing his boots to appear taller, and imitating Elvis Presley. Charismatic to many teenagers yet deeply insecure, he manipulated a group of younger followers who admired his rebellious image. Schmid committed his first known murder in 1964, killing 15-year-old Aileen Rowe with the help of teenage accomplices. For months, the crime remained hidden. In 1965, he murdered Gretchen Fritz, an 18-year-old girlfriend who knew of his earlier crime, and her younger sister Wendy, fearing she would expose him. Their bodies were buried in the desert outside Tucson. The charismatic façade began to crumble as those around Schmid grew uneasy, and rumors circulated. Eventually, one of his close acquaintances went to police. Schmid was arrested, tried, and convicted of multiple murders, receiving a death sentence that was later commuted to 50 years to life after Arizona briefly abolished capital punishment. While in prison, Schmid attempted escape and was later severely injured by fellow inmates. He died in 1975 from wounds inflicted during a prison attack, at age 32. Schmid’s case drew national media attention, inspiring magazine features—most notably a 1966 article in Life—and influencing pop culture, including Joyce Carol Oates’ short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” His story remains a disturbing example of charm weaponized as manipulation and the dark side of teenage idolization.

The 1975 murder of 15-year-old Martha Moxley in the affluent gated community of Belle Haven, Greenwich, Connecticut, remains one of the most notorious unsolved cases in American true crime history; on October 30, Moxley was bludgeoned to death with a golf club near her family’s home, sparking a decades-long investigation that led to the 2002 conviction of Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel—later vacated in 2018 and dismissed without retrial in 2023 due to evidentiary issues. Similarly, the 2005 murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, ignited national controversy when she vanished on October 31 while on a photo assignment; her remains were later found on the property of convicted felon Steven Avery, who—along with his nephew Brendan Dassey—was found guilty in a trial marred by allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and coerced confessions, as dramatized in the Netflix series Making a Murderer, though both men remain imprisoned amid ongoing appeals.

In 1954, in the conservative city of Christchurch, New Zealand, two teenage girls—16-year-old Pauline Parker and 15-year-old Juliet Hulme—committed one of the country’s most notorious crimes by brutally murdering Pauline’s mother, Honorah Rieper, in Victoria Park. Bound by an intense, obsessive friendship forged in shared illnesses and elaborate fantasies, the pair had created a fictional “Fourth World” of saints and eternal youth, viewing Honorah as an obstacle to their inseparable future when Juliet’s family planned to leave New Zealand. On June 22, after tea at a park kiosk, they lured the unsuspecting woman into the woods and bludgeoned her to death with a brick wrapped in a stocking, delivering 45 blows in a frenzied attack. Their diaries, seized by police, revealed meticulous planning and delusional justifications, leading to a sensational trial that captivated the nation, diagnosed them with “folie à deux” (shared psychosis), and convicted them of murder—though spared the gallows due to their youth. Sentenced to indefinite detention, they were released in 1959 under new identities; Juliet reinvented herself as crime novelist Anne Perry, who died in 2023, while Pauline lived reclusively. The case sparked moral panics over juvenile delinquency and homosexuality, inspiring Peter Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures and enduring as a chilling study of adolescent obsession and unchecked fantasy.

Elizabeth Diane Downs, born in 1955 in Arizona to a strict fundamentalist family, grew up in emotional isolation that fueled her narcissistic and histrionic tendencies, leading to an impulsive marriage at 18, multiple affairs, and three children she viewed as burdensome obstacles to her romantic obsessions. On May 19, 1983, in rural Oregon, the 27-year-old postal worker shot her children—eight-year-old Christie, seven-year-old Cheryl, and three-year-old Danny—at close range during a staged roadside ambush, killing Cheryl and leaving the others severely disabled, all to eliminate them as barriers to reconciling with her married lover, Robert “Nick” Knickerbocker. Her fabricated tale of a “bushy-haired stranger” quickly unraveled under forensic scrutiny, Christie’s hypnotic testimony, and her own failed polygraphs, culminating in a 1984 trial where she was convicted of murder and attempted murder, sentenced to life plus 50 years. Downs’ chilling lack of remorse persisted through a 1987 prison escape, multiple denied paroles, and psychological evaluations diagnosing her as a malignant hysteric psychopath; her case, immortalized in Ann Rule’s Small Sacrifices and a 1989 TV movie, exposed the horrors of maternal filicide while profoundly scarring survivors Christie and Danny (adopted by prosecutor Fred Hugi) and her fourth child, Rebecca. As of October 2025, at age 70 in a California prison, Downs’ latest appeal—challenging nonunanimous jury verdicts—grinds on amid public outrage, underscoring her unyielding denial and the enduring legacy of a mother’s monstrous betrayal.

Episode 476: The Murder of John Lennon and Various Beatles Conspiracies

John Lennon, the iconic co-founder of the Beatles and a prominent peace activist, was tragically murdered on December 8, 1980, outside his residence at the Dakota building in New York City. He was shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman, a disturbed fan obsessed with Lennon’s fame and the novel The Catcher in the Rye, who had traveled from Hawaii to carry out the act after obtaining Lennon’s autograph earlier that day. Despite immediate medical efforts at Roosevelt Hospital, Lennon succumbed to massive blood loss and was pronounced dead at age 40, leaving behind a profound legacy in music and activism.

Among the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the Beatles, one of the most enduring is the “Paul is dead” rumor, which claims that Paul McCartney perished in a car accident on November 9, 1966, and was secretly replaced by a look-alike to keep the band intact, with alleged clues hidden in album artwork, lyrics, and backward messages on tracks like those from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other theories include suggestions of CIA involvement in suppressing the band’s radical anti-war messages or connections to the organization through extended associates, as well as occult pacts or Illuminati influences that purportedly fueled their rapid rise to fame and cultural impact.

Episode 475: Keith Hunter Jesperson – The Happy Face Killer

Keith Hunter Jesperson is an American serial killer who murdered at least eight women across the United States and Canada between 1990 and 1995, primarily along interstate highways where he worked as a long-haul truck driver. Known as the “Happy Face Killer” for his habit of drawing smiley faces on anonymous confession letters he sent to newspapers and police, Jesperson targeted vulnerable women, often hitchhikers or sex workers, whom he strangled and dumped in remote areas. His first confirmed victim was Taunja Bennett, 23, killed in January 1990 near Portland, Oregon. He claimed up to 160 murders but was convicted of eight. Jesperson’s taunting letters, signed with smiley faces, began in 1990, frustrating investigators until his 1995 arrest in Washington after he confessed to killing Julie Winningham during an interrogation. Arrested on March 30, 1995, Jesperson pleaded guilty to multiple murders, receiving life sentences without parole in Oregon, Washington, and California. Now 70, he remains incarcerated at Oregon State Penitentiary, occasionally corresponding with true crime enthusiasts.

Episode 474: The Life & Mysterious Death of Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, was an iconic American actress, model, and singer, celebrated for her roles in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Some Like It Hot (1959). Known for her glamorous persona, comedic talent, and breathy voice, she became a cultural symbol of beauty and femininity in the 1950s.

Despite her success, Monroe struggled with personal issues, including turbulent relationships, mental health challenges, and substance abuse. She married three times—James Dougherty, Joe DiMaggio, and Arthur Miller—and had high-profile relationships, notably with President John F. Kennedy and possibly Robert Kennedy.

Monroe died on August 5, 1962, at age 36 in her Los Angeles home. The official coroner’s report ruled her death a probable suicide from a barbiturate overdose, citing her history of depression and prior overdose attempts. However, her death sparked numerous conspiracy theories due to inconsistencies and her connections to powerful figures.

Some speculate Monroe was killed to silence her about alleged affairs with JFK and/or RFK, fearing she might reveal sensitive political or personal secrets. Claims of RFK’s presence in Los Angeles that day and missing phone records fuel this theory, though no definitive evidence supports it.

Theories suggest organized crime, possibly linked to her Kennedy connections or Hollywood circles, orchestrated her death. This is largely based on her rumored associations with figures like Sam Giancana, but evidence is circumstantial. Some believe the CIA or FBI eliminated Monroe due to her knowledge of classified information via the Kennedys, with her home allegedly bugged. Declassified files show FBI interest in her, but no proof of foul play exists.

Less sensational theories propose her death resulted from a miscalculated dose by her doctors or a mix-up in medications, given her reliance on prescriptions and inconsistent medical oversight. Investigations, including a 1982 review, upheld the suicide ruling, citing high levels of barbiturates (Nembutal and chloral hydrate) in her system and no physical evidence of murder. Still, gaps like the missing autopsy details, delayed reporting, and cleaned-up scene keep conspiracies alive. Monroe’s death remains a cultural mystery, blending her tragic life with speculation about hidden truths.
