With the rising cost of fuel and the fiery summer heat, we’re actually contemplating (my husband and I) if we’ll push through with our annual tradition of distributing packed foods to the less fortunate this Holy Week.

I realized that, despite the difficulties we have been experiencing these past few months, I still consider our family blessed. And our kids look forward to this tradition, and in fact, they’re quite excited.

So we started brainstorming what to prepare. When we started this in 2020, we gave out sandwiches and water as we drove along to our next church destination for Visita Iglesia. In the following years, we prepared rice meals. There was a year we gave out Chicken adobo with quail eggs, and another year we distributed Corned beef with potatoes over rice.

This year, the family prepared Tofu Sisig inspired by Max’s. To give it a slight twist, Baguio beans were added for extra nutrients and a bit of crunch—while also helping stretch the servings, to be honest.

Each of us has an assigned task, and I’m happy that everyone pulled their weight, and even if it was really draining all my energy, I was very happy to do it. After drying and cutting the tofu into small pieces, I coated them with cornstarch mixed with salt and pepper for added crunch before I fried them. I started frying at 6 pm, and by 11 pm I was just halfway done. Kali came to my rescue and finished the rest past 12 midnight.

Zaki prepped the veggies and helped me with the sauce, so all we needed to do was to cook and assemble everything in the morning. Ohh, I almost forgot, we cooked about 5 kilos of rice. I cannot for the life of me cook rice in one big batch. I’m too nervous for that, so I cooked the rice in 3 batches. Good thing, all of them came out great, sans the tutong. Lol

All in all, we prepared and bought:

12 kgs tofu

2 kgs bell peppper

1.5 kgs white onion

7 bulbs of garlic

2 kgs Baguio beans

1/4 kg siling haba

2 kgs mayonnaise

250 ml of oyster sauce

1/2 bottle liquid seasoning

2 cans reno liver spread

500 grams cornstarch

2 pcs lemon

1 liter of cooking oil

100 pcs biodegradable food container

100 pcs wooden spoons

The total cost came to around ₱4,000, which covered about 104 food packs. A classmate of Kali from Mater Carmeli School also stepped in with a generous donation—three boxes of 500 ml bottled water, or 108 bottles in total. It eased the budget and made the distribution more complete. The donor prefers to remain anonymous, but their kindness brought plenty of smiles that day.

Aside from the homeless, we also gave food to security guards and anyone on the street who would ask for food. But what really warmed our hearts was when we stopped at the Agham and Quezon Avenue intersection. We called a young girl selling Sampaguita while the traffic light was on red to give her food since it was already almost 11 am. When the light turned green, and we started driving, she waved goodbye with a beaming smile on her face. Many folks who received food packs were so thankful and even said may God bless us. Those moments were priceless.

We typically visit 7 churches and do 2 stations per church to finish all 14 stations. However, just to manage our fuel expense, we decided to cut the trip to 6 churches and did not go to Christ the King anymore. Once this war is over and fuel expenses go back to normal, I swear we will return to Christ the King or even go farther for this annual tradition.

What I’m really happy about is the sense of family and bond we experience in this activity. It’s a chance to reflect and make sacrifices we don’t normally make, just so we can at least feel (even the slightest bit) what Christ felt during his journey to redeem us from sins. Walking under the heat and feeling a bit of thirst can’t compare to what Christ went through, but it was enough to keep us grounded.

Last Saturday, we celebrated Kali’s 18th birthday at Kamura Fusion Resto. It was a small, relaxed gathering. The only goal was simple: let her enjoy the night with the people who love her as she steps into adulthood.

Of course, I came prepared. I had a speech written and ready. I already knew I probably wouldn’t get through it smoothly—I’m the kind of parent who cries at moments like this. Still, I thought having something written down would help.

Then, right before it was my turn, I changed my mind and decided to just wing it.

Bad idea. Lol.

I managed to say most of what was in my heart, but later I realized I skipped a few parts that would’ve helped people understand where I was coming from. So I’m sharing it here—the speech I meant to give.

I knew I wanted to be a mother at 24. But the universe had a different plan, and I became one at 29. It wasn’t a straightforward pregnancy—we only conceived after going through an expensive fertility test at St. Luke’s, which wasn’t even covered by our HMO. Not many people know this, and Kali herself only found out a few months ago.

Suffice it to say, she was a gift we long waited for.

Why did I want to become a mother at an early age, you ask? Well, in those days, people would say that the closer your age is to your child, the better it will be, relationship-wise. But I guess they missed the memo.

Maybe the years we missed conceiving her are the reason why we don’t always jive like jelly. Or maybe I’m just making excuses. The truth is, we’re not alike. In fact, we’re polar opposites in so many ways. And I think that’s okay.

I once read that you can be best friends with your kids, but if that’s not the case, Que sera sera. Even if we aren’t the closest, I make sure to impart everything I know to her—all the values she’ll need when she faces the real world. I’ve tried my best to equip her with the tools she’ll need, albeit the hesitations.

Soon, she’ll be out there in the jungle. And I’m confident that whenever she’s faced with a dilemma, she’ll look back and say, “Sabi ni Mama, ganito daw gawin ko.”

I am a proud mother of a beautiful and smart girl. I’m sure she’ll reach her dreams soon. She’s hardworking, she perseveres, and she is relentless. If you only knew how much she’s so hard on herself sometimes. You’ll be amazed. I could never.

I’m confident, and I don’t worry at all— That is, if she could just wake up to the sound of her alarm.

Ever since I started working from home, lunch has always been the easiest thing to neglect. Most days, I relied on leftovers, a bowl of oatmeal with raisins and nuts, or nothing at all if a nap felt like the better choice. It wasn’t ideal, but it was convenient, and convenience usually won.

Then one aimless scroll on TikTok changed that. I came across the soup kit recipes of Joe x Fitness, a Korean fitness content creator who shares simple, health-focused meals. I tried one out on a whim. Now, making soup kits has become part of my weekly routine, especially for lunch. They fit neatly into my day, right when I need something warm, filling, and easy to pull together.

The Ingredients I Keep Reaching For

In Joe’s recipe, the base is simple and well thought out: tofu, thinly sliced meat, mushrooms, cabbage, scallions, Korean pastes, and bone broth. I followed almost everything, except the bone broth. Making it from scratch takes time and patience, and most days, I don’t have either. I use beef stock instead, finish it with a little sesame oil, and add a splash of soy sauce. It gets the job done without turning lunch into a long cooking session.

Enoki mushrooms cook fast and add a light crunch. Tofu softens the broth and makes the soup feel more filling. Cabbage brings in a mild sweetness as it cooks, while thinly sliced meat adds richness without needing much time on the stove. Scallions go in at the end for a fresh bite that brightens the whole bowl.

The Korean pastes are what pull everything together. Doenjang, a fermented soybean paste, gives the soup its deep, savory base. It makes the broth taste like it took hours, even when it didn’t. Gochujang, a red chili paste, adds gentle heat and a touch of sweetness. Used together, they create balance—comforting, warm, and just interesting enough to keep me coming back to it.

Why This Works for Me, Every Time

What I like most about food kits is how little they ask from me. By midday, my brain is already full from teaching, answering questions, and keeping the house running in the background. I want lunch to happen without needing extra thought.

I’m also a creature of habit, especially on workdays. Once something works, I stick with it. Food kits fit right into that rhythm. Everything is ready, measured, and waiting, so I don’t have to pause and decide what comes next. I just pour, simmer, and move on.

There’s comfort in the predictability. The soup tastes familiar every time, which feels grounding in the middle of a busy day. It’s warm, filling, and easy to eat between classes. No rushing. No cleanup drama. Just a small reset before the rest of the workday carries on.

Jjang Kae #109 Kalayaan Avenue, Quezon City

I’ve always wanted to try jjajangmyeon. I was curious about its dark color and bold look, especially after seeing it so many times in K-dramas. It always made me wonder, “What does that actually taste like?”

Then, out of nowhere, my TikTok feed was suddenly flooded with jjajangmyeon and Jjang Kae reviews (algorithm is scary, lol). It felt like food bloggers were everywhere! That was the sign I needed; I finally told myself, ‘Okay, that’s it. I’m trying this soon

I did my homework and watched a few reviews first to make sure we ordered the right things. I didn’t want to waste money on a ‘miss’! The consensus was to get the special jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk, so we took their word for it and ordered exactly that.

The perfect day came on January 25. It was Kali’s debut photoshoot at Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife, which is less than a kilometer away from Jjang Kae. We left home at 7:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. shoot since it was a Sunday and traffic was lighter.

We just had McDonald’s coffee and some packed sandwiches for breakfast. It was a great day to be outdoors—the air was cool, the sun was mild, and the 28-degree weather made waiting around quite enjoyable. We just sat back and caught the breeze while the shoot finished.

The shoot wrapped up around 1 p.m., and by then, we were starving. We headed straight to Jjang Kae at 109 Kalayaan Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City. Since it was less than a kilometer away, it was a very quick drive. However, the parking lot was already full when we arrived, so Lay had to stay on standby in the car.

Here’s what we ordered:

Jjajangmyeon (2 orders) – ₱350 each

Jjajangmyeon – Chewy wheat noodles topped with a thick black bean sauce, mixed with pork and vegetables.

I finally had my ‘K-drama moment‘ with a bowl of jjajangmyeon, and it was… fine. It had that nice touch of umami I’d seen on screen so many times, but it wasn’t quite the life-changing spark I expected from watching my favorite actors. Still, I’m glad I finally crossed it off my bucket list. Satisfying that long-held curiosity was a win in itself, making the whole trip to Jjang Kae worth it.

Samsun Jjampong – ₱420

The dish delivered exactly what I expected—bold, fiery spice balanced with generous portions of seafood and crisp vegetables. The serving was impressively large; even with five of us sharing, we couldn’t finish it. We packed up the leftovers and enjoyed them later.

Tangsuyuk (Medium) – ₱850

Crispy and tender pork, served with sweet and sour sauce on the side. This was enjoyable and easy to share.

Kkanpunggi (Medium) – ₱850

Spicy fried chicken with a strong kick. Another good choice if you like bold flavors. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo. Lol

Kun Mandu – ₱250

Fried Korean dumplings. Sadly, this was the most underwhelming dish we ordered.

Overall, I’m glad I finally tried Jjang Kae. When a craving keeps bothering you for days, it’s hard to sleep until you give in. At least now, I know what jjajangmyeon tastes like.

Will we come back? Probably for the jjampong. That one stood out the most for me.

While we were waiting for our food, Zaki suddenly said, ‘Ma, I’ll greet them.’ He was looking at the three men at the table next to us, assuming they were Korean since we were in a Korean restaurant. However, as I listened closely, I heard the word ‘Hiroshima’ and noticed their Japanese accent. Then it clicked—I looked again and realized one of them was Yukan, the TikTok creator famous for singing OPM songs in Japanese! I said hello, and they were all incredibly kind. After our meal, I asked for a photo, and he happily agreed, even moving closer so I wouldn’t have to get up.

Such a nice guy. That moment made the whole experience even more memorable.

A spot like this also keeps coffee breaks simple. There’s no need to walk across the house or pause work for too long. The setup stays visible, which makes refills quick and cleanup easier. For someone with hemiplegia working from home, that setup makes coffee simple and keeps the day organized.

For me, that means black instant coffee, coffee grounds(if I’m using the espresso machine), non-dairy creamer, and muscovado sugar. Add green tea and Earl Grey for slower moments or late afternoons when caffeine needs a softer touch. Keeping the selection tight avoids clutter and makes choices easy.

Storing these essentials together saves time during long work hours. No searching through cabinets or second-guessing what to drink. Everything needed for a quick cup or a calm break is already there, ready to go. When the setup matches real habits, the space stays useful instead of decorative.

Storage should make life easier, not another thing to manage. For a coffee corner in a shared space, pieces that look calm and intentional work best. Woven options, such as rattan baskets, are great for this. They hide visual clutter and add warmth at the same time. One basket can hold tea bags and sachets, another for spoons or napkins. Everything stays close, but nothing looks messy.

Eleanor and Park aren’t perfect, they’re not the usual “storybook” pair, and maybe that’s exactly why their friendship stands out. It grows slowly, almost shyly, and yet it’s the kind of connection anyone would want for themselves—steady, accepting, and built on the small things that end up meaning the most.

I’ll admit it—I pressed play on The Beast in Me mostly because I was curious to see Claire Danes again. A more vivid portrayal of that moment could’ve added emotional weight and helped us understand her anger on a deeper level. Instead, it felt like a missing puzzle piece. Maybe the writers wanted us to crave more, but I couldn’t help wishing they had shown us just a bit more of that backstory.
