Hello From Antarctica: Big Ed’s Heirloom to The South Pole!

How awesome are these photos from McMurdo Station, Antarctica taken by my good friend Mark Walsh. Now he has returned to the States but Mark is a friend I met from college hailing from Mississippi who for the last couple of years has been holding down the fort at McMurdo Station. I sent some Big Ed’s Heirloom BBQ Sauce to him not long ago to try and warm up the crew & he came back with these. Enjoy.

Also check out his new venture Barefoot Wallets which began in 2004 when his wallet went overboard while sailing in Key West, FL. He had learned to sew while working as a sailmaker & would eventually make himself a new wallet – the first BFW. For the past two seasons he has disassembled his industrial sewing machine, packed it in a carry-on suitcase, and have flew it down to Antarctica. There, he would use his bed for cutting, his desk for sewing, and would sell these wallets around McMurdo. They’ve become a popular item down at the bottom of the world, and they are now ready (enough) to see how these “Adventure-Travel” wallets will fare at home.

Summerville Native Wins Yahoo! Sundance Film Festival Shorts Competition With The Debutante Hunters

Here is a nice little short film that was recently entered into the Sundance Film Festival in Utah by lowcountry Summerville, South Carolina native Maria White.

This Sundance film was the third collaboration between White & her husband and 1 of 5 films to receive grants from the South Carolina Film Commission. Yahoo & Sundance allowed people to view 9 of tehse short films online with a $5,000 cash prize on the line for the taking, The Debutante Hunters took the Yahoo Audience Award with her portrayal of these Southern Belle’s offering up their take on why they hunt, where they are from, what got them into hunting deer, wild boar, hogs (would love to throw some Big Ed’s Heirloom BBQ Sauce on this), birds etc.

The film is only about 12 minutes long so it is worth the time. Personally, I thought it was pretty good although this is coming from the perspective of someone who grew up around these types of situations and hunting where it is pretty much commonplace. I can see how the film would be a bit more enticing to someone not from the South and who has not been privy to the outlet of hunting or being around it their whole lives. I can see how someone from another state or locations who do not really get into the sportsmen outlets as noted above can see it as very exciting to watch being that simply they are not used to it. Either way, the short was well done in my opinion and it’s always great to see fellow budding, entrepeneurs from South Carolina gaining some presence ranging nationwide, possibly internationally and as we have seen as evidenced by a great win for the home team even all the way in Utah. Congatulations! We hope to see more of your films in the future!

GORUCK OR GO HOME: THE ULTIMATE BACKPACK FOR EVERYTHING.

You may ask, why am I posting something about backpacks when I run a bbq sauce brand & company? Well, #1 I can do that, #2 we have a great deal of pride in America where we live & American made products while inducing money back into our system domestically, #3 this is a product I can use that very well leads to me getting many of the aspects done in my life related to my business & industry. I ride my bike a lot during the day running errands for the business, exercising etc. and I must have something to protect my laptop and goods while doing that and this would sure fit the bill. So you see, it does relate. Also, I love design so you can see here below why this product hits me as well.

I have been known to go through some backpacks in my time as I am always on the move working, going to the gym riding my bike somewhere etc. and this one looks pretty awesome. What drew me into the brand moreso was the story behind the company & their “rucks”. It’s a great example of building a brand in my opinion having known a thing or two about the subject at hand. Let’s not forget that these are 100% American-made products made on American soil by American hands. Yes, that means you are pumping money back into this thing we have here and fueling progression of us as companies and citizens of the United States.

The company was started by ex Green Beret Jason McCarthy about 5 years ago who states he started GORUCK after his tour of duty was over & after realizing two things: “There’s power in the team, and a good piece of gear makes all the difference.” He also is in charge of the GORUCK Challenge, an 8 to 10 hour, 15 to 20 mile, Green Beret team event that takes place in cities around the world.

The Bags
Minimalist. Black. All Black Everything and made out of 1000 Denier Cordura meaning you are not going to tear or break these bags, it’s also water resistant. Plenty of publications are already on board to tout it such as Men’s Health, Huffington Post, High Snobiety & more.

Let’s not forget that it’s very functional, it would have to be right, to be in the fields of Afghanistan etc. and respected so much by the US Military & Special Forces. Also note that it’s components are top notch as well like the YKK zippers which Jason states he trusts as they have held up fine and worked well in Middle Eastern sandstorms. The G1, or the cadillac, was two years in the making between design changes, testing & more redesign to get it right.

How to build a brand. See how they did that?

Highest quality products check. Simple, yet clean check. Functional check. Lifetime warranty check. Anyone & their mother can attempt to build a brand but it can be much harder than you may think and take much more time than you think, but to do it all the while in our current economical state of affairs whilst keeping all production in the United States and using American products now that’s something to be proud of.

Whether intentional or not what they have done here with GORUCK & the implementation of the GORUCK Challenge. They have created quite a business branding model. You can plan well, do proper research to brand a product in the early stages based on design, functionality & something that will catch the eye of the consumer and really suck them in to purchase, this is standard procedure. You can get a Madison Avenue marketing firm to place you in the proper movie & entertainment outlets & have some awesome print & television adverts as well but that’s about where most people stop. These things have all been done. They have built a product & brand out of engagement with the GORUCK Challenge. An event that will constantly be touted right along with the GORUCK packs and cross branding each other consistently. Think about the reach of that and throw in some viral social sharing and it’s to the moon.

“We’re just American guys running an American company who want to do right by people and have fun doing it,” says McCarthy. “I believe that the shining star of the U.S. is that we have, by far, the best quality labor and products. III Movie Teaser: A 2D And 3D Movie Experience from TBA Productions Featuring Big Ed’s Heirloom Barbeque Sauce.

III is a 3D horror feature film being produced by TBA Productions, LLC; an independent 2D & 3D media production company based in Charleston, SC. The film is a hybrid of a slasher film with a creature feature twist in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft. TBA Productions is using practical effects to maximize the 3-D version of the movie and is filming a 2-D as well. III’s story and visual aesthetic is drawn from the classic slasher and creature features from the late seventies and eighties. Rather than having female characters incarnated as bimbos running helplessly up the stairs, they have been scripted as strong female leads which fight back against their attackers; similar to films like The Descent and High Tension. III features 13 cast members and 50+ extras that reside throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and have been filming since early October 2011 in St. Matthews, SC on a pre-civil war plantation. Key and supporting crew members consist of students from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Trident Technical College, Charleston School of the Arts, and the Art Institute of Charleston, as well as seasoned professionals from the industry.

Rolling Stone offers the full album stream of Pusha T’s Fear of God II: Let Us Pray today which has us excited being huge fans of Malice and Pusha T of The Clipse since they first hit the scene with Lord Willin’ in 2002. The G.O.O.D. Music representative also sat down with the magazine in order to answer a few questions. Here are some excerpts of the conversation. Fear of God 2 builds pretty naturally on the mixtape you put out earlier this year. What was your goal for the follow-up?
My goal was actually just to put the body of work together. The new record was going to be just things that I leaked to the Internet, but I figured that the fans should get it in a better way, rather than just having to download the whole record from off of HulkShare. This is just street music. It’s for the street, it’s for the fans. As soon as the records are done, I usually just give them out anyway, to keep the energy and the intensity going.

One of the standouts is definitely “Amen” with Kanye and Jeezy. How did that track come together?
It was something that Jeezy had. These collaborations had a lot to do with fans and fan demand. Everybody, for some reason, wants to hear Clipse and Jeezy. Everyone wants to hear Clipse and Rick Ross. Who knows why? I’m gonna say I don’t know, actually. [laughs] But everybody wants to hear the spin on it, man. This project was so much about me giving people what they wanted and showing people the alliances and the affiliations. I’ve never been a solo artist, so I sort of felt like I needed to be ushered into the solo realm of music and compete with the best. These guys really came through for me.

Any idea when your full-length will come out next year? Are you done with it?
No, no, I’m not done with it. I’m definitely not done with it, but what we’re dropping first is the G.O.O.D. Music compilation. I’ve done at least seven songs for my full-length, and for the G.O.O.D. Music record, I’ve done four. I don’t know what’s going to land and what’s not going to make it on, I’ve done four thus far, and I’m pretty sure I’m doing more. Fear of God Part I and Fear of God Part II, is just the prelude.

Condé Nast Traveler names Charleston Top City In The United States in Readers’ Choice Awards 2011

Condé Nast Traveler names Charleston “Top City In The United States” in Readers’ Choice Awards 2011. Charleston Native Stephen Colbert was there to accept the award on behalf of the city and residents, as was the Charleston Area CVB team and local travel partners. Charleston has been in the top ten for year after year but this is the first time that readers placed the beautiful city of ours on top.

To celebrate the moment Blue Ion worked with the CVB team, Hook and Jewell & Ginnie to create a Thanks Y’all response and accompanying website at charlestonly.com which is pretty awesome for them to do considering how much time this work takes. The site features locals speaking of the magic of this place, an overview of the Readers’ Choice award criteria, an offer to join the Insiders Club for a chance at free getaways, and a list of special travel packages.

Charleston won the award for the first time, leapfrogging San Francisco, which was the top city in 2010. The Holy City finished second last year. The magazine also ranked the country’s top 10 islands; Kiawah Island ranked No. 3 and Hilton Head Island was tied for No. 9.

Some lowcountry resorts and hotels listed below also were ranked nationally, including:

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, No. 3 in the mainland U.S. resorts category, tied for No. 37 in the world’s top 100 travel experiences

Childish Gambino—the rap alter-ego of comedian/actor Donald Glover—will release his debut album Camp on November 15 and this is apparently the lead single off the project titled, “Bonfire.” You can stream the CDQ version below as well as the radio rip of the already popular new song Bonfire.

Last year HBO started this whole mixtape with the show deal featuring various music & artists on it in an effort to promote the first season of How to Make it in America. Now we have volume 2 from Mick Boogie & Broke Mogul who is the music supervisor for the show both hosting the mixtape. You won’t catch any tunes from Kid Cudi this time around but he does provide the opening track “The New York Intro”.

If you youtube the music this sweet live video from The Temper Trap it’s up on the list for me. This is probably my second favorite track “Fools” off The Temper Trap’s first album “Conditions.” I recently came across the album and somehow had not known about it which is a bit odd as I am pretty into music. This guy’s voice is just so distinctive and awesome. It is what I would call a let it run album. Every track is worthy of listening to and you do not come across that much anymore this day in time.
