I don’t know what the big fuss is with M.I.A. performing while preggers. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? The baby’s first word could be “swagger” but it’s no reason to be up in arms. Right?

Not that it counts for much…or anything. After watching my BLUE DEVILS fall to the Demon Deacons I wondered how far we would fall in the rankings. Someone tried to excuse their loss by pointing out their tremendous effort in the comeback…man puh-lease. A loss is a loss. And with the ACC looking the way it looks this season, DUKE can’t afford to lose those kinds of games.

In other news, hell froze over in the Big East as Pitt, Georgetown and Syracuse were all upset tonight. Looks like UConn will be #1 in the new polls. College basketball is a lot of fun to watch right now.

Another Classic: Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon

Okay, so maybe it’s more like a cult classic. I don’t really understand what the appeal is because the acting is terrible (save for Sho’Nuff because I think Julius Carry did a wonderful job lol). But there’s just something about this movie that holds me captive. Sho’Nuff is one of my favorite movie characters EVER. There are rumors that there is a remake in the works with Samuel L. Jackson playing Sho’Nuff. If this is true, my life will be complete*.

*By complete I mean I will have another reason to love/dislike Sam Jackson.

This scene is one of my favorites in this cheesy movie. It’s definitely not Sho’Nuff’s most famous scene but I appreciate it.

Who plays this garbage? … Shut up, bitch! *Kicks in jukebox* -The meanest, prettiest, baddest mo-fo low down around this town, SHO’NUFF, the Shogun of Harlem.

Sometimes, when I hear Soulja Boy on the radio or see one of his videos on tv, I want to kick the somtheing, so I understand Sho’Nuff’s reaction to the audio garbage.

Throwback: The Mack

My father and I share a love for Blaxploitation films (I hate calling them that!). We recently watched The Mack together. I had to admit that I saw snippets of The Mack when I was younger. My crazy dad didn’t ask any questions. Instead we discussed the deeper points of the movie which included the heated conversation about whose afro was tighter, Max Julien’s, “Bruce” Leroy Green’s* or my dad’s. We soon concluded that what Bruce Leroy was rocking was more of a curl (or a natro as my dad called it) and my father beat Max Julien only because Dad was able to produce a box in the attic that held Black hair care products from the 70s…(oh Dad, what a pack rat). This is one of the reasons my father and I get along so well. He keeps the 70s boxed up in the attic and I wish that I had come of age in the 70s.

speaking of Bruce Leroy, did anyone else know about a remake of The Last Dragon? Supposedly Samuel L. Jackson is playing Sho’Nuff. So fitting. The Last Dragon* deserves its own post.

Anyway, that was a tad off topic. When I was 10, I did catch some snippets of The Mack and I have to admit that I had a little crush on Max Julien who played John Mickens aka Goldie. Here’s one of the best scenes in the movie.

Dude in the soul food joint was adamant about pointing out that while we have elected a Black president, “shit” remains unchanged. By shit, he was referring to the fact that President-Elect Barack Obama and his family weren’t able to move into the Blair House early because Bush and his cronies were hosting an imaginary dignitary which turned out to be the FORMER Prime Minister of Australia for ONE night. I mean damn. You get elected President of a country and you can’t even stay in your own guest house? That is some bullshit.

*I absolutely looooooooove Countdown.

While that is shitty, there is some other shit going on in this country. Particularly, the way Oakland police shot a young man who was handcuffed. When I read or hear about shit like this , I get sad. There was a time that I used to get angry and part of me still does but whenever a story like this comes up…I just get sad.

I can’t exactly explain why I get so sad, other than it makes me realize that no matter how far Black people have come, or will go, in this country there will still be those who don’t value our lives, and shit like this will continue to happen. I get sad because there are still Black people who die for no good reason in this country. I just can’t help but get sad.

*please forgive the overuse of the word “shit” but sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade, in this case, you have to call some shit…shit.

What the hell is going on with the Boston Celtics?? After losing to the Lakers, they have not been able to get it together. You can’t win a championship like this. You just can’t. They got beat on a three from Von Wafer…Von f*ckin’ Wafer.

In other news, DUKE men’s basketball is now ranked number two. And after Boston College handled the Tar Heels like a bunch of lightweights, UNC is now ranked number three. All is right in the world because we all know DUKE>UNC.

At least the Blue Devils know that mediocrity is unacceptable.

I have my gripes with DJ Khaled and his gratuitous use of the word “nigga”. But Kanye goes hard.
