FEMA sold disaster shelters as ‘Frankenstorm’ gathered strength

Federal officials sold hundreds of emergency trailers for disaster victims at fire-sale prices in the months before Hurricane Sandy churned toward the United States, The Washington Examiner has learned.

Now, with thousands of families left homeless in New York and New Jersey by the hurricane, those same federal officials are poised to spend more taxpayer dollars to buy brand-new trailers.

These aren’t the infamous “Katrina trailers” from 2005 that were tainted with toxic levels of formaldehyde. A 2008-or later model trailer would have been built well after that controversy became national news.

The trailers were sold for a fraction of the original $25,000 price the government paid for each of them. The General Services Administration, which handled the auctions for FEMA, sold some for as little as $3,800.

But what the hell, right?  It’s not like it’s real money…  only taxpayer money….  and it’s not like we need these trailers RIGHT NOW.  Better to sell at pennies on the dollar so we can by new shelters that won’t be used for the next disaster.

Wonder why we’re getting a drip-drip-drip of wild new details every day? To keep us distracted. The sex scandal is a mess, but it’s not the mess that matters.

What matters is what happened in Benghazi, Libya on September 11 that resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including two Navy SEALS, a longtime foreign service officer, and the personal representative of the President of the United States, U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The situation in public housing projects in Coney Island, Brooklyn remains a “humanitarian crisis” in which the government and the Red Cross have been nearly completely absent, according to Eric Moed, a volunteer aid worker with Occupy Sandy.

Friday is Moed’s fifth day volunteering with Occupy Sandy, an ad hoc hurricane relief group formed by former Occupy Wall Street activists. Moed, an architect from Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill neighborhood, goes door to door in the 30-40 public housing buildings in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn to distribute food, water and supplies, and help address sanitation and medical needs. The projects in Coney Island remain without power, and often without water and necessities in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Accounts of these conditions have been corroborated in the New York Daily News.

Instapundit has taken to calling this ‘Katrina on the Hudson’. Each day that passes makes that seem more and more accurate. This really is a National disgrace.

I guess photo ops don’t really matter that much now that the election is over.

Can anyone else imagine the outrage that would be rolling if Bush had gone Golfing during Katrina? Democratic Underground was desperately hunting for this news back then…. they seem to be pretty quiet about it now though.

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has lost his bid for a seventh term.

The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday’s count.

That’s an insurmountable lead with only about 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted.

I think it’s pretty damn sad that the election ended up being as close as it was. I could be generous and say it was because of absentee ballots that were cast before he was a convicted Felon. To be honest I believe it was so close because a lot of people in Alaska loved the Federal pork Stevens pulled in and ignored his conviction to keep the trough open. Good evidence of this can be found in this article from the Anchorage Daily News which couldn’t help but list all the ‘good’ Stevens had done for the state…. in the end pegging simple ‘bad judgement’ as the reason he commited these Felonies.

I’ve wanted this man gone for a long time. He is one of the worst examples of corrupt pork masters in the Government. Good riddance.

An incredulous Scarborough kept pressing, astonished at such a complete 180 from Matthews’s repeated insistence during the Bush presidency that he had to hold the government accountable.

It boggles the mind.

“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

No really sure what the means but it sure sounds a hell of a lot like the National Guard.

It also reminds me a bit (just a bit) of Kerry’s mandatory national service draft program.

I also can’t help but wonder if Barney Frank wants to cut the budget of this ‘security force’ by 25% as well.

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted of seven corruption charges Monday in a trial that threatened to end the 40-year career of Alaska’s political patriarch in disgrace

Stevens, 84, was convicted of all the felony charges he faced of lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor.

Stevens should resign immediately.  If he doesn’t, the Senate should boot him.   It only takes a 2/3rds vote. Hopefully Senator Steven’s career is now on that ‘Bridge to Nowhere’.

The Republican party deserves to lose this Senate seat for allowing him to run for re-election in the first place.

“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.“

Did he really just say that?  Did he really just say that If we elect Obama their will be a ‘generated, international crisis’?  No wonder they’ve been keeping Biden away from the press.  He might has well have said ‘Vote McCain. Our enemies know what his response will be and won’t test him.’

Hmmmm….  I still think I’m sticking with ‘none of the above’ however.
