Advertising

Most free web hosts impose advertising on your website. This is done to cover the costs of providing your site the free web space and associated services. Some hosts require you to place a banner on your pages, others display a window that pops up everytime a page on your site loads, while still others impose an advertising frame on your site. There is really no hard and fast rule which is to be preferred: some people hate a pop-up window, other webmasters dislike having to stuff banner codes onto their pages, and many people cannot stand an advertising frame (which may cause problems when you submit your website to search engines). Whichever method is used, check that you’re comfortable with the method.

Amount of web space

Does it have enough space for your needs? If you envisage that you will expand your site eventually, you might want to cater for future expansion. Most sites use less than 5MB of web space. Indeed, at one time, one of my other web sites, thefreecountry.com, used less than 5MB of space although it had about 150 pages on the site. Your needs will vary, depending on how many pictures your pages use, whether you need sound files, video clips, etc.

FTP access

Some free hosting providers only allow you to design your page with their online builder. While this is useful for beginners, do you have the option to expand later when you become experienced and their online page builder does not have the facility you need? FTP access, or at the very least, the ability to upload your pages by email or browser, is needed. Personally, I feel FTP access is mandatory, except for the most trivial site.

File type and size limitations

Watch out for these. Some free hosts impose a maximum size on each of the files you upload (including one with a low of 200KB). Other sites restrict the file types you can upload to HTML and GIF/JPG files. If your needs are different, eg, if you want to distribute your own programs on your pages, you will have to look elsewhere.

Reliability and speed of access

This is extremely important. A site that is frequently down will lose a lot of visitors. If someone finds your site on the search engine, and he tries to access it but find that it is down, he’ll simply go down the list to find another site. Slow access is also very frustrating for visitors (and for you too, when you upload your site). How do you know if a host is reliable or fast? If you can’t get feedback from anyone, one way is to try it out yourself over a period of time, both during peak as well as non-peak hours. After all, it is free, so you can always experiment with it.

CGI-BIN access / PHP

This is not particularly crucial nowadays for a free web host, since there are so many free CGI hosting services available that provide counters, search engines, forms, polls, mailing lists, etc, without requiring you to dabble with Perl or PHP scripts.

However if you really want to do it yourself, with the minimum of advertising banners from these free providers, you will need either PHP or CGI-BIN access. Note that it is not enough to know they provide PHP or CGI-BIN access: you need to know the kind of environment your scripts run under: is it so restrictive that they are of no earthly use? For PHP scripts, does your web host allow you to use the mail() function? For Perl CGI scripts, do you have access to sendmail or its workalike?

Bandwidth allotment

Nowadays, many free web hosts impose a limit on the amount of traffic your website can use per day and per month. This means that if the pages (and graphic images) on your site is loaded by visitors beyond a certain number of times per day (or per month), the web host will disable your web site (or perhaps send you a bill). It is difficult to recommend a specific minimum amount of bandwidth, since it depends on how you design your site, your target audience, and the number of visitors you’re able to attract to your site. In general, 100MB traffic per month is too little for anything other than your personal home page and 1-3GB traffic per month is usually adequate for a simple site just starting out. Your mileage, however, will vary.

Barry Schwartz blogged the story on SearchEngineJournal and quoted Google as stating that the PageRank displayed in the Google toolbar should be used for “entertainment purposes only.” Schwartz’s post was based on a thread in the Search Engine Watch discussion forums where a member claimed to have received the following explanation from a Google representative.

“The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old.

If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasnt been updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesnt not have a real PR of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date.”

Industry watchers and professional search engine marketers have believed for quite some time that the PageRank displayed within the Google toolbar was not the most accurate representation of a site’s link popularity as rated by Google, but no official word from Google has ever confirmed this.

On the contrary, GoogleGuy (who posts in online discussion forums to represent Google) has publicly posted at several blog sites to refute the statement, saying that he “…strongly disagree with the statement that the toolbar PageRank is for “entertainment purposes only… I think it’s also a little irresponsible to quote JohnGalt claiming to talk to some random person at Google, and then for you to quote it as a response from Google, which makes it sound more official. I’m happy to refute that this is any sort of official stance.”

Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineWatch.com commented in his own blog this afternoon that the statement discrediting PR scores in the toolbar comes from an unofficial source and that if he’s going to believe an “unofficial source” he’s most apt to believe the “mystery man” behind the GoogleGuy posts at popular online discussion forums.

So what does this mean to small business owners and online marketers? It serves to further confirm the idea that PageRank watchers need to seriously consider uninstalling the Google toolbar. PageRank, whether you are getting an accurate accounting of it or not, is only a single representation of a Web site’s value. Granted, it’s a very easy to view representation, but that’s part of what makes it so easy for small business owners and marketers to focus in on it so intently.

What online businesses need to do is learn to judge the value of a Web site based on a combination of factors. Don’t link to a page or request a link from a page simply because it has a strong PageRank. Take the time to consider how relevant the site is to you audience. Does it have information that your customers would find to be valuable? Does your site have information that visitors of the site would find valuable? In other words, turn the toolbar off and evaluate the site without giving any regard to the PageRank that it may or may not have. If you still feel it’s worthwhile to link to or otherwise partner with, then go ahead and set up a partnership. If you don’t think it’s valuable, then move on and find another site to work with.

By Jennifer Laycock

Choosing a reliable web hosting service provider for your web site could be a real challenge. Web hosting market is supersaturated with all those web hosting companies that appear and disappear each other day, throwing a shadow on web hosting industry in general. It is very hard to choose and indeed to find reliable web hosting service provider and for this, you should consider a range of things such as functional peculiarities of web hosting provider, its stability, reliability, and secure work of its web servers.

How does the process of placing your web site in the Internet look like? Web site hosting represents the final stage of your web site development, at this you choose the place where your website will “live”. Surely the best way will be to choose paid web hosting services. It is necessary if your web site is important for you and it is even more important if your web site is commercial or business project. You may get Linux web hosting services or web hosting on any other server platform, for example Windows. You get professional technical service, fast speed of your website load, you will not be liable to place any advertising materials of web hosting company on it. More over, if you chose paid web hosting service, the visitors of your website will trust you more than if you chose free hosting service.

So here there could be two possible situations:

1) You already have your own web site and domain name registered and your website was hosted elsewhere previously. You decided to transfer your existing web site to any other web hosting provider. What should you do now? And how to shorten downtime of your website (the time when your website will not be available in the WWW? When you have already chosen your future web hosting provider you should
a) Choose if you will transfer domain name registration service to your new provider or will keep domain name management at your registrar place;
b) If you want to manage web hosting and domain name registration service from one place reassure that the chosen web hosting provider accepts domain name registration transfer;
c) Ask web hosting provider about its name servers. Now after you purchase web hosting account you may start to place your web site.

We recommend to change name servers for your domain name at once since name servers change will require DNS update and this may take from 24 to 72 hours. During this time your web site will not be available to public view via its name. But, with web hosting account we will provide you with dedicated IP address and can start to manage your website and upload your web site content (via FTP client software for instance) via IP address assigned to your domain name.

2) The second situation takes place when you have just taken decision about on-line presence. With web hosting account we will provide you with professional web site builder that will allow you to build your web site in about 30 minutes. To place your web site in the web you should register a domain name and upload your website to the web server (if you have made it in FrontPage or if you have your web site files on your hard disk) or publish web site of you made it using site builder.
Please note that domain name registration will take about 24 hours and when they expire you can access your site via its name.
