He is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a disabled person, according to police.

The 61-year-old victim, who authorities have not identified, was upgraded to stable condition today at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. He is expected to survive.

According to police radio broadcasts from Tuesday night, one of Landry’s family members lives in Bishop Markham Village.

I was in a meeting at Lowell General Hospital regarding traffic in Lowell this evening when I checked my breaking news list on Twitter and discovered Chelmsford Police were calling for MedFlight to transport a man who was attacked with a knife at 257 Littleton Road.

I left Lowell General in a hurry.

After talking to a witness and friends of the victim at the scene, I believe I know the victim’s name and the name of a man who may be the suspect, but I’m going to withhold the victim’s name until I know his family has been notified.

I’m also going to withhold the possible suspect’s name, since the DA’s office is not confirming that they have a suspect. Lawsuits and all that, you know?

Jessica Pastore, a spokeswoman for Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone, confirmed for me that police were called about 6:45 p.m., for a report of a 61-year-old man with life-threatening stab wounds.

That man was flown to an undisclosed regional trauma center and is still being treated at this hour.

According to a 53-year-old witness who told me he has known the victim for about 35 years, the victim is a 61-year-old Chelmsford native.

The witness said the 61-year-old was in his black Chevy pickup truck behind the Chinese restaurant and liquor store at 257 Littleton Road, when a 41-year-old Chelmsford man who lives below the victim in an apartment building on Littleton Road walked into the parking lot from a trail in the woods.

“He walked straight up to the driver’s side door,” the witness said.

He said the 61-year-old got out of the truck, and the 41-year-old appeared to punch him several times.

“I thought it was fists at first, but then I saw he was all sliced up,” the witness said.

He said the wounds were more like slash wounds than stab wounds.

“He sliced his belly open and he sliced his neck open,” the man told me.

The witness said he wrapped a T-shirt around the victim’s neck and put pressure on the wound as the suspect ran back into the trail through the woods.

“He ran back into the woods like a rabbit,” the witness said. He estimated the entire encounter only lasted about 30 seconds.

The victim remained conscious at the scene, though he was bleeding heavily.

Suzanne Shallah, pictured above, told me she has known the victim for about 40-years. She said he is a Chelmsford native, and that he has two grown children.

“He’s a sweetie-pie. He would do anything for you,” Shallah told me.

She and the witness, who is not pictured, both said the attacker lives below the victim nearby the scene, and that the attacker has long accused the 61-year-old victim of making too much noise.

Pastore would not confirm these details, and she declined to comment on whether investigators have a suspect, though she did say the attack is not believed to be random.

“We do not believe this to be a random attack, we do not have a suspect in custody or charged at this time and are actively searching for the perpetrator,” Pastore said.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 5’8, 160 pounds, with no hair. He was last seen wearing muddy boots, khaki, knee-length shorts, and a T-shirt.

He may be in the Lowell area, as I heard police radio broadcasts indicating he may have gotten a ride to the area of Gorham and Elm streets.

Investigators from Dracut Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office have still not identified the body.

Today police released even more details about the description of the man who was found dead.

Police say the man was a white male, 20- to 41-years-old. He was 5’9, about 120 pounds, and had red body hair.

Police say he had no scars, no tattoos, and bad teeth. Police were unable to determine his eye color.

He was wearing white Nike Airmax sneakers, size 11.5, but he only had size 9 feet. He was wearing dark blue nylon pants with three vertical white stripes down the legs, with an Adidas bathing suit underneath. He was wearing a Casio watch, not a Seiko, as was initially reported. He was also wearing a light-colored polo shirt with the name and logo for “Corporate Chefs,” on it.

Police have contacted Corporate Chefs, which is based in Haverhill and has closer locations, but company officials checked for past employees who are unaccounted for and did not discover any.

Dracut Police Deputy Chief Dave Chartrand said investigators are pursuing all possible leads, but have still come up empty so far.

“We have researched all missing persons in the area and have not encountered a viable match,” Chartrand told me. “We have also been in contact with the local homeless shelters, to no avail.”

Jessica Pastore, a spokeswoman for the district attorney, tells me and autopsy has not confirmed a cause of death.

Someone has to be missing this guy. Even if he’s homeless, someone has to notice that he’s missing at some point.

Adkinson, 28, failed to return to a minimum security center on Friday after he was given permission to leave to get a haircut and groceries.

Lyons said Adkinson was found in an apartment in Manchester on Sunday night and arrested.

He is now being held in a special housing unit at the New Hampshire State Prison in Concord, Lyons said. That is New Hampshire’s maximum security prison.

“That’s very typical when someone has walked away and been apprehended and brought back,” Lyons said. “We put them in a stricter environment for disciplinary purpose.”

Lyons didn’t have any further details about Adkinson’s arrest, but you can stop looking out for him on the streets of Lowell.

I started walking back toward my office and made it to Market and Dutton streets before I noticed what’s pictured below in the sky head of me.

I tell this story because of the ridiculous coincidence, not because I think it’s funny.

I would soon learn that firefighters were on their way to Canada Street, where Deputy Chief John Mulligan told me crews arrived to find a corrugated metal building and several shipping containers fully engulged in fire.

“It was fully engulged when we arrived,” Mulligan told me. “We couldn’t get within 20 feet.”

Reader Paul Sweeney emailed me the photo above that he took from the nearby bridge on Lincoln Street.

The corrugated metal building and storage containers were used as a shop by Tommy Tree, a family business based on Manchester Street that trims trees, digs foundations, and does other odd jobs around the area.

Mulligan said the reports of explosions were due to propane tanks and gas containers on the property, and that the explosions weren’t anything too huge.

There were no reports of injuries.

There is no electricity to the building, though, so the Fire Investigation Unit was called in to investigate.

The business is owned by Kristina Dion, and run by her husband, Paul, along with about five other employees.

Kristina Dion told me the property is owned by Lowell Iron and Steel, which the city’s GIS system confirms. But it was Dion who had about 30 cords of wood, tools, and other items stored in the buildings.

“It’s more of a storage space for us,” Kristina Dion said.

Dion wasn’t sure last night if the company’s insurance will cover the damage.

The family has been in business for over 20 years, so I’ve got my fingers crossed tonight that things work out for them. I asked Kristine to call back later this week to let me know how things turn out, so I can share that news with the community.

This blaze does appear to be suspicious, according to both police and fire radio broadcasts I’ve heard, so we’ll be checking back first thing tomorrow to see if any progress has been made toward determining a cause.

In the meantime, keep the Dion’s and their employees in your thoughts.

At least no one did here in Lowell.

About 11 p.m., the car pictured below ran a red light and struck a Ford Explorer on Appleton Street at the Lord Overpass.

Two men, in their early 20’s, were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police said the driver of the car admitted he ran the red light.

As I was walking away from the crash pictured here, police and fire were sent to 1990 Middlesex Street for a report that a vehicle had crashed into a wall.

That report was no joke.

A man who was driving a Ford SUV outbound on Middlesex Street struck a pair of utility poles and then took out a 10 to 15-foot section of a very thick brick wall along the side of the road.

It’s worth noting: He struck the exact same pole another guy did just two months ago, on a straight stretch of road.

Somehow he escaped serious injury.

Witnesses at the scene told me a woman jumped out of the SUV, pushed someone aside and ran down the street following the crash.

Police found that woman a block away, though, and she did not have any drugs or contraband on her. She was a passenger in the car. Police said she was a Kenyan woman with a Washington state driver’s license. They’re not sure why she ran, but she is not facing any charges.

And all this happened after Lowell Police quickly broke off a pursuit earlier in the night because a driver who ran a stop sign on Broadway Street accelerated to over 70 mph, on Broadway Street, when he refused to stop for police.

Officers barely even tried to chase him before a street boss ordered them to break off. That’s an utterly insane speed on a street like that.

Lowell, seriously. Take it easy on the roads.

Vehicle crashes claim way more lives each year than murders do. Think about it.

Shane Adkinson, 28, of Lowell, has been wanted since Friday about 6:45 p.m., when he failed to return to the minimum-security Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester.

Adkinson had been given permission to leave the facility to buy groceries and get a haircut. He never came back.

Adkinson was in the facility serving a 3- to 6-year sentence for second degree assault after being convicted of striking his pregnant girlfiend with a pickup truck in Seabrook, N.H. The woman suffered a broken hip and ankle, according to published reports.

Adkinson was 421 days into his sentence, which he began serving on April 15, 2011.

He is described as a white male, 70 inches tall, 212 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He has tattoos on his right shoulder and left forearm.

Four people were killed in three crashes around the state this weekend, including a 31-year-old Lowell man who died after he was ejected from a Ford Expedition that rolled over on Route 25 in Plymouth on Saturday morning.

A 41-year-old Lowell woman who was driving that Expedition is also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after she was partially ejected.

State Police said in a release you can download here, that Ran Sat, 31, of Lowell, died at Tobey Hospital in Wareham despite the efforts of Trooper William Bates, who performed CPR on Sat at the scene of the crash on Route 25 near mile marker 6 on Saturday about 8:20 a.m.

The driver of the Expedition, Sophy Bo, 41, of Lowell, was partially ejected as the vehicle rolled over. She too suffered what police described as life-threatening injuries.

Bo was taken to Tobey Hospital, and from there was flown to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where state police said she was listed in fair condition this afternoon.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.

There was also a fatal accident on Interstate 495 in Andover, north of Route 133 early this morning.

State police say Zahir Khan, 64, of Salem, N.H., died as a result of injuries suffered in that crash. More details of the Andover crash were not released.

Yet another crash claimed two lives on Route 24 in Bridgewater this morning about 4 a.m. Police are not yet releasing the identity of those killed in that crash.

Be careful out there folks. There has already been too much death on the roads this weekend.

I know a few people who witnessed this and they said the guy in the wheelchair was in the middle of the street when he was struck by an SUV. The impact spun the man’s wheelchair around.

Police said the driver of the SUV is about 44-years-old.

The 58-year-old was taken to Saints with what were described as minor injuries. He remained conscious at the scene.

It’s Saturday night and accident reports don’t get filed real quickly when the city is this busy, so I’ll check back on this tomorrow to see if there were charges or citations.

It’s Saturday night, though, folks. If you’re driving downtown, keep your eyes open. People ARE going to step out in front of you.

UPDATE: I got the ages backward here. The driver was 58 and the man in the wheelchair was 43.

According to the Lowell Police report on this crash Gian-Reto Wiegner, 58, of Winchester, told police he was driving outbound on Central Street when he heard a noise and looked in his rear-view mirror to see a man in a wheelchair behind him.

Thomas Sarantakis, 43, of Lowell, told officers he was crossing the street when he drove into the side of a Toyota SUV.

The police report notes that the damage to the SUV was on the rear, driver’s side door. No charges were filed.
