Your project turned out so cute! Great job!

 

For August I received Amy’s quilt.  She had originally requested 16 patch blocks and sent 2 off as her starter to the quilt.

In July she decided to give us free reign and told us to go for it and make whatever we’d like!

Jennifer had the quilt before me and she made the beautiful hexy/star strip at the top.

When I got the quilt package it contained 6  blocks and the long strip.     I stuck them on my wall and waited to see if inspiration would come.

For 2 weeks I looked at everything and rearranged the 16-patches.   I kept feeling like it was hard to go in a new direction with so many of the previous blocks still intact.

Hopefully no one will be mad at me for taking their blocks apart!

I split 4 of the blocks in half and used them to frame a long dash block that I made.

I felt like it helped give the quilt a new start, tying in with Amy’s decision to go a different direction.

Amy I hope you think so!

I also added in the diamond block for the next person to use as she’d like.

Love the cheery colors and am excited to see it grow!

My book choice is Hoop La! : 100 Things to Do with Embroidery Hoops by Kirsty Neale.

This book is full of ADORABLE ideas for making hoops and all are small projects.   I’m a beginner at embroidery and I chose this book as a way to practice my skills and end up with something cute to hang around the house.

Now,  when I say adorable, I mean seriously so so cute.    Pretty much every single one is something I would love to make and that’s hard to say about 100 projects.   Well done Kirsty!

The projects combine embroidery and appliqué along with lots of creative ideas for embellishing your hoop from wood staining to crochet.

At the end of the book there are instructions and photos for embroidery stitches, how to crochet and tips on appliquéing.   Pretty much everything a beginner needs.

I chose to make 1 of the hoops from a 3 part series called ‘What’s Cooking”(shown below).

This project combines fused appliqué and embroidery.  I would have never thought to combine the two and it really adds such a fun dimension to the finished project.

My stitches are far from perfect, but the process was relaxing and I enjoyed having a project that could travel easily with me.

My latest project is an Illustrator class online at Skillshare.

I saw an ad on Facebook to take the class for $10 (normally $20).   They must know I like a good deal.

I took an Illustrator class at a local college late last year and really didn’t feel like I got a good grasp.   The class covered so many topics that it felt overwhelming and I wanted to hurry up and make something!

With this class, it’s all video tutorials.    The teacher is really down to earth and we are actually making something from the get go.

Our project is to take a graphic advertisement and reproduce it.

I found a vintage needle ad online that I’m using.

I’ve been working a little bit each day and I’m actually DOING IT!  yay!!

One of my dreams is to attempt fabric design and I finally feel like I’m understanding how to use my sketches to create something digital!

I haven’t given it enough thought to know if I just want to design for the sake of learning or if I really want to attempt ‘designing’.

I’m just really really excited to have had an interest to learn something and be able to actually do just that.   And not have to leave my house, yay internet!

Hopefully I can get this finished up soon.  I was surprised to realize the lettering is the hardest part.

I am really beginning to have fun in this bee.   I had Courtney’s quilt last month and her theme was ‘favorite things’.

My favorite is the geek glasses from Sew What Sherlock.   It was a really great paper piece pattern, highly recommend.  (You can find here for $2.50)

Amy’s quilt just arrived yesterday so I need to start brainstorming!   I finally feel like I’m getting in a groove with contributing to these.

I was really nervous on the first two quilts.  Worrying that I would get it ‘right’.   Worrying if I was adding something meaningful to the quilt.

I’m embarrassed to admit how often I doubt myself.     In my design work, in blogging and life in general.

I have so many ideas unshared and many that I have shared that I have yet to accomplish.

What the heck!

I know I’m not the only one with self-doubt, but ugh it’s annoying!

I had just planned to share pictures  but apparently I needed to give myself a public pep talk.

Baby steps, a little each day.    Start your idea, don’t think about how you will finish it, just start.

Don’t get so wrapped up with the details, learn and enjoy the process.

You are creative.   It’s okay if not everyone likes what you do.   You are doing it for you, no one else.

Take this day and make it count.    Each moment be purposeful.

Lecture :: Sewing With Leather

In the first of this two-session class, we will learn tools, tips, techniques and troubleshooting to get you on your way to using leather in your sewing projects.   Leather not only adds durability to your handbags and accessories but also adds a professional and polished look.   We will start with the different types of leather and where to source all the way to caring for the finished product.   You will walk away with inspiration and know-how to add a little bit of luxury to your handmade goods.

Hands On :: Sewing With Leather

In the second session we will take the knowledge we acquired and use it to make a tote bag.  In this class we will be working with suede and will learn three ways to use the leather on one handbag.    The techniques we cover will take a simple tote bag and turn it into a bag that gets noticed!

I love sewing with leather and am really excited to share!!

Hi all!   Today starts Week 10 of the sew along and the 1st day of school at my house.    It’s been a busy morning!

This week’s project is the largest in the book, the Swedish Bloom Time Quilt.    Kerry from Very Kerry Berry is sharing the quilt she made for her daughter today and it is a beauty!!

We all understand things differently based upon our experiences and when a pattern does not have many diagrams it can be hard to move forward when something doesn’t make sense!

First thing to note is that I believe there is a piece of Errata on page 78 in the yellow tip circle.   Instead of reading 6 1/2 it should read 5 1/2.

This will not concern you if you make the box scrappy as the book shows.  I chose to do a solid exterior and had I followed the tip bubble, my piece would have been too large.

Because this is a book pattern I can’t be too explicit with a tutorial, but I’ve tried to show with a little more detail how steps 11-13 are completed.

Step 11:

You are simply drawing a box 1/2″ in from each edge that will be your stitch line.   You will start and stop 1/2″ in from each side which will later allow you to fold up into a square shape and stitch your box together.

Step 12 and 13:

Your lining will remain unsewn which leaves an opening and allows you to insert the interfacing.   I’m showing step 13 here, but they are essentially sewn the same.

You will pull the lining up and away from the pocket/patchwork piece.   I recommend starting in the center and sewing to one end and going back and finishing the other side.

(My stitching is brown and hard to see, not the black edgestitching you see more clearly.)

This is helpful because to leave the lining free you need to pull a bit as you reach the end of your piece to expose and help the side seam of your piece lay flat.

Below you can see that I am pulling my lining a bit to give room to keep sewing to the end of the piece.

You want to stop right on the stitch line from the side seam of your pocket/patchwork piece.   I’ve circled below what I’m talking about.    This will be 1/2″ in from the edge.

I hope this helps you some.   It’s hard to explain without giving too much away!
