OMG! You worked hard on a post, published and then logged out. You returned the next day and logged in and found the post (or page) is gone. This means you may have to reconstruct it again from scratch. You suddenly feel dizzy, and nauseated, and your heart begins to beat rapidly.

What to do? Don’t Panic.

(1) Look in your Admin section to see if it was saved as a Draft Post or as a Private Post or Draft Page or Private Page.

(2) If you don’t find the post or page then it could be in your trash. Provided you did not permanently delete it then restoration is possible.

(3) At WordPress.com there is an autosave feature that saves every 2 minutes. Each time you click Save Draft or Update Post (or Page) a revision is saved.

(4) If the post or page has been published long enough for Google to index it you may be able to search and locate a cached version. Use the keywords or the title and the Google searchbox.

Handle Online Attacks Effectively

A personal attack is committed when a person substitutes abusive remarks for evidence when attacking another person’s claim or claims. This line of “reasoning” is fallacious because the attack is directed at the person making the claim and not the claim itself.

If you’ve been personally attacked online my advice is to consider failing to engage or delaying engagement. If you must respond, then do so calmly. Take the time to demonstrate there is no merit to statements made and others will think better of you for not losing your cool.

Hopefully you will never need have to deal with a serious attack but if you do and want to see it removed, you need to contact whoever controls that content. Most often, this means that you need to contact the author and/or webmaster of the page and ask them to take down the content in question.

1. Consider there seriousness of the post/article/comment.

Does it distort the facts?
Does it libel you?
Is there any actual damage done?
Or does it merely hurt your ego?

2. Contact the author and politely ask them to remove or modify the offending post/article/comment. If this happened on a Moderated board contact a Moderator.

3. If the post/article/comment that the attack was made on accepts comments submit a civilized rebuttal and avoid the temptation to include a dig at the author.

4. If the offending material is not removed and especially if the other party escalates, set up a separate free blog to counteract any erroneous information about you. Counteract it by publishing the truth about you and/or your company and/or cause. Keep it updated with fresh content because the more new content there is on your blog the further down the offending comment will be pushed in Google search results.

5. Set up Google Alerts so you are aware of what’s being said about you, where and by whom. For managing your online reputation, consider checking out these comment tracking services and tools:

6. If the offending material remains then contact the webmaster and request the removal or modification of it.

7. Type ” Google WebPage Removal Tool” into your Google searchbox and click. Sign in with your Google Account to submit a removal request.

Password stealing hackers target Facebook users

Hackers have flooded the Internet with virus-tainted spam that targets Facebook’s estimated 400 million users in an effort to steal banking passwords and gather other sensitive personal information.

According to anti-virus software maker McAfee Inc, the emails tell recipients that the passwords on their Facebook accounts have been reset, urging them to click on an attachment to obtain new login credentials . If the attachment is opened, it downloads several types of malicious software, including a program that steals passwords.

The subject line of the scam email reads: ‘Facebook Password Reset Confirmation! Customer Support.’ McAfee advised anyone receiving the password-reset message to delete it and to not open the attachment. Source

McAfee says it is a return of a virus that has been seen before and its tracking for the past 48 hours has the security company predicting the virus will affect more than 400 million Facebook users. — Beware of Facebook virus

Basic Netiquette for Beginner Bloggers

If you are courteous off-line then behaving the same way online is not problematic, because online courtesy is primarily a matter of common sense, and thinking twice before you post. There are some extras that are specific to online communication but they are easily learned. If you are new to blogging and are not aware of Netiquette, then you may want to consult Netiquette Guidelines.

Netiquette began before the 1991 start of the World Wide Web. Text-based email, Telnet, Usenet, Gopher, Wais, and FTP from educational and research bodies dominated Internet traffic. At that time, it was considered somewhat indecent to make commercial public postings, and the limitations of insecure, text-only communications demanded that the community have a common set of rules. The term “netiquette” has been in use since at least 1983, as evidenced by posts of the satirical “Dear Emily” Postnews column. — Wikipedia

I discovered a 2 minute and 39 second long video that summarizes the basics so I’m posting it today. I do have many things to say on this issue but I will wait for readers to comment before I share them.

My Tips

Lurk before you join any online group, forum, social media site, or social networking site. This will provide you with an opportunity to determine whether or not there is any value for you in joining.
Read the FAQs and all sticky posts and policies before your join an online group. After you join consult them and do searches before posting.
When posting to support forums do not:
- fail to search support documentation, FAQs, and policies prior to posting.
- use non-descriptive titles like “help!” when posting forum threads.
- post off-topic pleas for help into existing threads AKA thread-jacking.
- fail to post a link to the article, image, page or post you refer to.
- fail to provide a detailed description of what you did and what happened when you did it.
- post an email address in a form spam bots can crawl.
- use all capital letters.
- use no capital letters.
- use excessive punctuation (!!!! ????)
- use text speak.
- use profanity.
- expect instant answers to your questions and bump your own threads or start duplicate threads when you don’t get instant answers.
- expect emotional support.
- post personal attacks.
- fail to thank those who helped you solve your problem.
