The concept of Cydwoq is simple. Rafi wanted a shoe that was hand-crafted using high-quality leathers, and designed around the natural contours of foot. His shoes are a beautiful balance between vintage and modern. They carry on traditional craftsmanship with a twist of contemporary design that’s influenced by nature, architecture, automobile design, and old hollywood.

Please note that the colours, finishes and combos of leather were handpicked and made-to-order for Trove. While we have the above styles in stock, they vary in colour from the ones shown above. The Spanish shoe brand El Naturalista epitomizes eco-friendly fashion. There’s a reason that Trove carries the largest selection in Canada! Yes, it’s partly because they’re extremely comfortable, fashionable, beautifully crafted, and durable… but it’s also because they’re one of the most environmentally and socially responsible fashion brands out there. El Naturalista combines traditional craftsmanship with new technologies for their production, using vegetable dyes, recycled, biodegradable and natural materials wherever possible. The leather for their products is acquired in Spain, locally sourced from animals raised for food. This reduces the impact and waste of these food industry farms! Here are some other facts about El Nats:

-Hand worked/finished leather with natural oils/waxes
-Semi-vegetable tanned leather
-Vegetable dyed
-Natural or reused rubber soles
-Recycled waste cork shavings
-Water based glues (healthy & safe for factory workers)

Working with organizations across the globe, like the not-for-profit ProPeru or Amigos De Tanzania, El Naturalista shows that they really do care about people. They’ve also created an annual award that donates 40 000 euros to projects concerned with the education and care of children. Where are your textiles sourced from?
Anywhere I can find them!  I love natural fibers so am always trying
to find new sources for those.  I also recently started buying ends of
rolls of printed cottons and incorporating them into the collections.
It’s a great way to kind of “recycle” unwanted ends and there are some
beautiful and unusual prints available!

Is environmental sustainability an important factor in your design practice?
I didn’t go into this with a particular goal to be environmentally
sustainable.  As the business has grown I have been faced with
different decisions that often come down to choosing between what
makes you money over what you know is the right thing to do.  The
fashion industry does get me down sometimes because it can be as
exploitative of humans, animals and the planet as people suspect.  One
of the ways I keep my heart in it is to try to do the right thing
whenever possible.  My focus tends more towards sustainability in
general rather that just environmental sustainability.  I can sleep
well at night knowing that the people who I work with to make Birds
clothing are making a living wage.

What advice do you have for consumers that want to be more “eco friendly” shoppers but don’t know how?
I feel overwhelmed all the time by how MUCH we consume.  It seems like
the whole world is just trying to stuff themselves and their homes
with cheap, disposable crap and burning though products like there’s
no tomorrow.    Life has become an endless, accelerated cycle of in
and out that doesn’t really give anyone the peace and satisfaction
they are seeking.  My only advice would just be to buy less, buy
smarter, use what you have and wear your clothes out!  Not until they
have holes in them, but buy decent quality items, treat them with
care, and let them become a part of you.
