Date: Saturday, April 30th from 9am – noon

Location: UW Arboretum

We will be removing invasive species from the Arboretum prairie and savanna lands for this one day service project. We do have a car signed up currently, and I am working on possibly getting a second, so please sign up if you’d like to join us!  Make sure to dress for the weather and also for hard work, as we will most likely be getting pretty dirty.

Watch out for an email this Friday night if you’re volunteering on Saturday. We should be done right at noon, so don’t let your Saturday plans stop you from coming. We also have 2 cars signed up, myself and Sarah (thank you!!); so there is plenty of room for anyone else who wants to join!!

And lastly, this will be the last newsletter of the semester, so I just want to say a big THANK YOU! to everyone who has volunteered this past semester.  You are all awesome and have big hearts & deep souls.  Seriously– this year was a blast!

Hello there volunteers!

There will be no office hours or newsletter over spring break, so please take a few minutes to look over the upcoming events, as they are coming fast!!

If you volunteering this past weekend at the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, thank you for being awesome!!! But did you sign in on the sign in sheet? Make sure to do so here.

Below are the upcoming events for the end of the semester!  It looks like these will be the last events of the year, as we won’t be having any in May. Like I said at the section meeting, please sign up even if you don’t see a car listed; I’m looking into ways to get around this restriction.

Aldo Leopold Maple Syrup Fest

This event is an educational event for younger children and they will need help with general event set up, table running, etc. The Maple Syrup Fest is an annual event and much of it is held outside on the ALNC’s beautiful grounds!  You can sign up here. A car will be needed, but don’t let that dissuade you from signing up if you don’t see a car listed yet.

If you are still interested in volunteering tomorrow please sign up here!  Unfortunately, I will not be able to be there tomorrow, but you still need to sign in on the sign in sheet here (put your name down the day of).

It’s a little odd to be sending out the newsletter on a Friday but I really wanted to hold off to get all the extra event info in at the end — we have 3 new events added so make sure to check them out below, on the calendar, and the sign up sheet! And if you are going to KNO today, please see the relevant info for tonight!

Special thanks to everyone who came to donate blood on Wednesday, and those who volunteered, too! We got a lower number of donations that usual this semester, but all that matters is that we saved lives.

Kids Night Out

Date: TODAY, March 4th 6pm-9pm

Location: Eagle Heights Community Center

KNO is tonight at the Eagle Heights Community Center.  You can board the 80 just about anywhere and it will take you directly to Eagle Heights.  If you would like to ride with a group of people, you can meet with the organizers at the Campus Women’s Center in room 4416 at the SAC for 4:50pm.

Lakeshore Nature Preserve Cleanup

The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is in need of a facelift, and we will be there helping clear trash and other unsightlies all day on the 12th. If you are interested in volunteering please sign up here!

Aldo Leopold Maple Syrup Fest

Date: Saturday, March 26th from noon – 5pm

Location: Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Monona, WI

The annual Maple Syrup Fest is upcoming in a few weeks.  I have been to this event before and it is always a really exciting time; the weather is just starting to be fair and being outside at the ALNC is ultra therapeutic. Add 30+ kids running around and it is a volunteers dream! This event is an educational event for younger children and they will need help with general event set up, table running, etc. There are usually really neat maple syrup things here and it will be a lot of fun! You can sign up here, and don’t forget that a car will be needed.

This is the third year SWE has helped put together the Capital Science and Engineering Fair, along with Professor Sundaram Gunasekaran of the Biological Systems Engineering department. The grand prize winners this year were:

Promega Corporation 2nd Runner Up: Kate Kujawa with The Effects Roller Coaster Wheel Material has on Rolling Resistance, Load Endurance, Ride Performance & Durability

Promega Corporation 1st Runner Up: Amit Rajesh with Optical Character Recognition Algorithms: Reading, Playing and Converting Music to Braille

Forte Research Systems Grand Prize: Lilly Snellman with Role of Integrin Signaling Pathways Driving Collective Migration of Human Keratinocytes

Location: Union South

The College of Engineering Spring Blood Drive is on Wednesday, March 2nd in Union South. You can sign up to volunteer at the blood drive here. We still need a couple people to help with setting up in the morning, and tearing down at 3:00.  These are very important shifts so please consider signing up!  Want to give blood this spring? Sign up in advance at www.redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code “UW COE” to choose your appointment time.
