The Discussion Settings page in WordPress is where you’ll deal with the controls for comments, trackbacks and pingbacks on your site. If you have a static website and have no interest in allowing comments then you can disable comments for your entire site on the Discussion Settings page and skip this video. If you do plan to allow people to comment on your site’s posts or pages, then this video will give you a good understanding of the settings available to you and how to use them.

The Reading settings page contains one of the most important WordPress settings you should be familiar with when using WordPress for business. It’s the “Front Page Displays” setting and it lets you set a static home page for your site (that contains a welcome message, description of your company, products, services, etc.) instead of blog posts. Custom Error Pages: These simply mean that if someone clicks on a link to a specific page on your site that no longer exists, he should not just get an error message. He should be taken to a user-friendly page where there are links to the other pages on your website. This way you won’t lose a potential client.

Make sure you site also works without a leading ‘www’. Not everybody types in ‘www’ before they go to a website. And it does NOT automatically work. Your website has to be set up to work both with a leading ‘www’ and without it, otherwise you might well lose half your potential visitors.

Don’t make your website slow with huge graphics: You might like the 800×600 picture of your reception desk. That does not mean your website visitors will like waiting for it to load every time. And don’t just force the browser to display a smaller size – it still has to load the full image before it can do that. So rather re-size it in a graphics editor before the time.

Use a favicon: What is a favicon? It’s simply a small picture that is displayed in your browser’s address bar when you visit a particular website. It could be a small version of your logo, or some other image that you feel will remind people of your site instantly when they see it again. It’s cool and it’s professional.

Register more than one domain name: Relative to ten years ago, domain names are very cheap to register at the moment. If you have more than one domain name (they can all point to the same website), your chances if being found online are simply that much better. It will also prevent competitors from registering a name similar to yours and thereby tricking visitors away from your website. As a very least you should register all the top level domain names for your business, like . Com, . Net, . Org et cetera.

Website navigation: As a visitor goes from page to page on your website, the links should remain the same on each page and they should also appear on the same place inside the different pages. There is nothing more frustrating than getting totally lost in a website’s navigation system, so you have no clue where you are or where you were coming from. Whether you do the web design job yourself, or get a web designer, this matter is very important.

Ever log into your WordPress site and notice there’s about 20 of your plugins that have upgrades available?

It can be time consuming to go through each one, click the “upgrade automatically” link, move on to the next plugin…rinse, repeat.

If you’re using WordPress 2.9.1 or higher, there’s a neat little trick you can use so you can upgrade all of your plugins with just a few clicks.

Here’s all you do:

1. Go to the following URL: http://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/update-core.php (obviously you’ll replace “www.yourwebsite.com” with the actual URL of your website!)

2. On this page, go to the plugin section, check the “Select All” box and click the “Upgrade Plugins” button.

3. Watch all your plugins get automatically updated!

(If you’re using an older version of WordPress, there is a plugin, One Click Plugin Updater, that can do this for you.)

This is exactly the reason I love WordPress so much – either there’s a simple solution to automate your tasks for you built into the software or, if not, there’s a plugin available that will.

A great WordPress plugin must have the following features and characteristics to make it ideal for implementation by the WordPress administrator.

Seamless installation: The plugin must be able to install easily and seamlessly without any trouble. It also helps in migration and upgrading of the system.

A good user interface: A plugin must possess a good user interface to add a menu based navigation for the admin; this would ease the tasks for the admin and make the plugin more useful. A good user interface must be intuitive to the administrator who is the end user here. It must provide him with enough options to manipulate the configurations for the plugin.

Security of the Plugins: A great plugin should not be vulnerability in the system.

Changes to the system: A change log is necessary to track all the changes. This is very important as it marks a timeline of the changes made so that an administrator can look at the past changes and its effect on the whole system.

Good support: A plugin that is well supported and documented is a big plus.

There are several other things that you can look for but the ones mentioned above are some of the most critical ones.
