There are two things I wish I’d understood when I first wanted to stay home with my children. One was how much it actually cost for me to work and second, how little I really needed to earn to stay home! This page will help you figure out both!

CAN YOU AFFORD TO WORK?

Would you send your children to childcare for 45 hours per week so that you could work 40 hours per week to make a measly $3.80 per hour? Of course not, you say. But how do you know you aren’t doing just that? I certainly never thought as a professional social worker that I would be making only $3.80 per hour. But that is exactly what I was doing.

When I worked as a social worker, I made about $28,000 per year. Not a great salary but, combined with my husband’s, was a decent income. So why was I always broke? Why did we have a good income but couldn’t afford to go on vacation? Worse, I couldn’t afford to take the full 12 weeks allotted for maternity leave when my second child was born. The reason was that I had no clue how much I spent to work outside the home.

Here is what I paid each year so that I could work:

• $3,000 for Federal and State government income tax, Social Security payments and Medicare tax.
• $6,000 for childcare
• $2,400 extra for car payments, car insurance, and personal property tax for a newer car.
• $1,700 for commuting 10 miles a day.
• $1,000 for clothes, dry cleaning and other items and services related to my professional appearance.
• $1,000 for lunches.
• $2,600 for convenience foods and dining out because I was too tired to cook.
• $2,400 for I-deserve-this-because-I-work-so-hard items and guilt treats (toys, special outings) for my kids.

Total cost of my job: $20,100!
I spent $20,100 to work! That equaled an income of $7,900 per year, $152 per week… a full $3.80 per hour!

How much do you pay to work outside the home?

Add all the items above and subtract from your GROSS income. This is the amount left over after you pay for work expenses. Depending on the results, you may find it much cheaper not to work or to work part- time from home. For many years I made significantly less than I did at my last traditional job, and yet we had more disposable income. Why? Because I didn’t have so many work related expenses, and I was able to save a lot of money by being home.

Many people don’t know that I have multiple income sources. Until last year, not only did I manage Work-At-Home Success, create and promote several information products, market my book, The Work-At-Home Success Bible, and freelance write, I also worked as a home-based contract adoption social worker. I do many thing and sometimes I get lost in it all. It doesn’t help that I’m organizationally challenged. I have outsourced some work in the past, but the VA’s I work with are so good, they get hired by bigger firms and I’m left hunting for good help again.

After my interview with Dr. Barnsley Brown, I’m rethinking my strategy. Maybe I should find an intern…or two. And Barnsley’s recommendation is that you consider it too, even if you’re just starting out. It’s especially appealing this week as for some reason I’m bogged down with work. I have a new freelance writing client that is taking extra time because I want to make sure I’m meeting it’s needs. I’ve have appointments outside the home that have taken away from my usual work time. If I had an intern, much of the “busy” work such as scheduling podcast guests and other PR would be done. This intern idea is sounding better all the time. And I agree with Barnsley that if you can find the help now, it will allow you to focus on what makes money, plus you’ll get into the habit of delegating, which after 14 years is difficult for me. Bloggers are everywhere. They’re popping up in movies and commercials. They’re commentators on news shows. They’re the author of the recent book you bought. You may be wondering, “how did they do that?” It’s a common question. After all, bloggers are serving up their information, rants and daily chaos for free. How is it that they make money?

I recently read where 80% of consumers go online FIRST to research before making a purchase. Many of those consumers find the information they want from blogs. This has led bloggers to become the go-to source for advertisers because they have mass appeal and sway over consumers.

So what does that have to do with blogging success? For too long, many people have believed that simply launching a blog with a few posts and ads was all that it took to make money. And while it’s possible that some money will be made with such a strategy, it’s unlikely that it will make enough to live on. There are several other steps that need to be followed beyond posting a blog if you hope to make any significant amount of money.

1. Write stuff people want to read. Bloggers do well because they have a fan base of readers that not only keep coming back, but tell others as well. The only way that will happen is by providing material people want to read. It may be information, funny stories, rants, news…it can be anything as long as readers like it and want to continue to read it.

2. Write for readers first, but use SEO techniques on the back-end. While you don’t want to rely on search engines alone to deliver traffic, they are a good source for letting people know about your blog. But the materials that search engines use to index and rank your blog are different from what readers view. Too often to optimize a blog, people write content that has keywords that search engines like, but boring titles and dry information for readers. So always write for your readers first. Make your content lively, engaging and fun. Use keywords and their synonyms, but only as they naturally fit into the content. Use plug-ins to such as Greg’s High Performance SEO to add alternative titles, keywords and descriptions that only search engines see and use.

3. Market, market, market. Waiting for people to find your blog will take forever and probably never lead to enough traffic to make a living. Blogging is like any other business venture, you have to help people find you. Start by defining who are the most likely groups of people to be interested in your blog. Determine where they can be found. Then supply articles, comments, and other materials that let them know about you. My favorite marketing techniques are article marketing, commenting on other people’s blogs and social networking. But there are many other strategies you can use as well or instead of those.

Bloggers who make money, receive free stuff and get book deals have lots and lots of readers. So the secret to blogging success is getting lots and lots of readers. The three strategies above can help you achieve that.

Over the last month, I’ve shared information on what it takes to succeed at working from home, how to find and get a work-at-home job, and how to start and build a home business. Have you done any of the recommended tasks? If not, why not? The perfect work-at-home opportunity is not going to show up in your email box. Finding or creating a way to work-at-home is a proactive activity. If you want to work at home, you have to make it happen. So today I’m going to recap what you need to do to work at home:

1. Learn about working at home through books and reputable websites and blogs.

2. Create a burning desire to reach your work-at-home goal. Imagine what your life will be like when you work at home.

3. Make a commitment to reach your goal, no matter what.

4. Inventory your skills, interests and passions and identify job and business prospects based on what you know, do or love.

5. Search for and research jobs and business ideas.

6. Determine what it will take to get a job or start a business.

7. Create an action plan to reach your goal.

8. Do something every day to work towards your goal.

9. Keep informed about working at home and trends in your industry.

10. Never, ever quit!
