I'm tired of interviewers saying they will contact me regardless in a few days, but don't call. Even with the phone interviews to get a face-to-face. I followup by email and they still do not respond. My last phone interview, I was told that I would be called for a face-to-face regardless. Should I followup or just assume they don't want to hire me?

Hi!
I was checking out your blog the other day and noticed your great advice so I thought you may be able to help me out with my question. I was unsure of where to post it so let me know f there is a more appropriate place for this question.
I am currently on unemployment insurance and have taken the opportunity to do some real career exploration and set some goals that fit well with my skills, experience and ideologies. I recently did an interview, not for a job I applied for, but for another position within the same organization. They have offered me the position but the problem is it's for a position I'm not all that thrilled about - low wages, minimal training, poor work environment with high burnout, and 100% on-call. It also doesn't really fit in with my current career goals. Since when my UI runs out, I may need this casual position but for the few months I have until that happens I would prefer to focus on reaching my career goals - is there any way that I can respectfully turn down the offer and still leave the possibility of applying again in the near future (June-ish)?

Thanks for your help! I look forward to your response.

My pleasure Jeremy! You've done your best. And yes...now it's the old waiting game. Good time to develop solutions to major world problems or write a lengthy novel. ;-) Fingers, legs and eyes remained crossed. Best of luck!

Thanks for the response Ronnie Ann! I called the person who interviewed me yesterday and just left a short message inquiring about the position again. So hopefully something happens soon! It's just tough playing the waiting game. Thanks for your advice!

Thanks Ronnie Ann. What do you make of the second interviewer asking for the performance review? I am guessing that because I was laid off they just want to make sure it was not performance related? Also am hoping that going through this much trouble they are seriously considering making me an offer!

Hi Chris #2!

This all sounds great. This is the time to call your recruiter and let him/her know about your other offers and ask how to best handle things. Hopefully your recruiter knows the company (you might try to assess how well s/he knows them) and will advise you well - esp. since they want you to get the offer!

This can be a tricky situation and companies don't like to be pushed - but they also don't want to lose good candidates. Start with the recruiter and then let us know if that doesn't seem to be an approach you feel good about.

Best of luck! And please keep us posted.

Hi Chris #1!

Please see first two sentences above. ;-) At this point, I think you've contacted them enough. Now...hard as I know it is...just wait. Even if it;s a couple more weeks. I once waited 3 or 4 months and was the top candidate! (Not that I wish that for you.)

In the meantime...this might be worth reading for you and others in the same situation:

Good luck! Please let us know how things turn out.
