We could all use a little more time to pay off purchases occasionally, but we don’t always want to max out our credit cards to do it.  Given today’s proliferation of online shopping for not only in-demand merchandise, but just about every kind of product you can think of, it’s no wonder that the development of buy now pay later apps have emerged on the scene as a good alternative for many people.

A Few Additional Points About Buy Now Pay Later Apps

Most of the apps mentioned above earn their money through their relationship with participating retailers, since the apps are driving new customers to their stores and websites. Take care in selecting the right one for your needs and make sure you are not over-extending yourself when you make purchases. Some of the apps charge late fees and missed payments can be reported on your credit report.

On the flip side, many of the apps can help build credit, or a credit line, offer discounts with the stores they work with and offer special deals via email, etc.

1.  Write for local publications and websites.– In virtually every city or community there are many types of publications – weekly alternative papers, bridal magazines, community magazines, online event and tourism websites, weekly and daily newspapers.   One good way to make some extra cash is to become a freelance writer for these magazines.

You should first familiarize yourself with the type of content that is included by picking up several of the publications or reading their online versions.   Then check out what their submission policies are.  Most local magazines will tell you how to submit story ideas in the masthead (The section that lists the publisher, editor, etc. – typically on the second page of most magazines).

Come up with a story idea and contact the magazine by submitting a query email or letter stating briefly what you would like to write about, etc.   Typically the editor will contact you back for more information or to give you the go ahead to write the story.

Publications will pay you by the word or by story.   You should get this information when you hear back from the editor.

Writers who pitch good stories and are deemed reliable can make a good amount of money locally by writing consistently and for various publications.

2. Provide Social Media services for local businesses. – There are many small businesses, including restaurants and other local retailers who do not yet have a social media presence, and others who do not use it properly to market their business.  If you are particularly social media savvy,  you can approach businesses with a solid plan and can earn money by implementing social media plans, developing social media presences for businesses and organizations and even get paid to maintain social media accounts.   This can be extremely lucrative if you find the right organizations and prove yourself by boosting engagement.

3. Sell clothing and other items at consignment stores. –  consignment stores have been around for a while and you can make some extra cash by taking your gently worn clothes and other household items and putting them on sale for consignment.  This basically means the consignment store will agree which items they think they can sell and for how much.  Once you agree on the price and what percentage you will get, the items will be put on display typically for a set amount of time.  If the items don’t sell, you can reduce your selling price or come and get the items.  There are all types of consignment shops and even some retailers (particularly local ones) will enter into a consignment arrangement with you if you produce things for sale such as jewelry, art, food or other items.

4.  Provide laundry services.  There are many people who pay for laundry services and you can make good money for providing excellent service, being reasonably priced and being prompt.  Elderly, homebound individuals, college students, busy working professionals and others all could take advantage of a service such as this.   To get started, print a flier and put them on public bulletin boards around your neighborhood, at your church, at the local college, local senior center and even local grocery store.  You can charge by the piece or by the pound.  A local laundry person I know charges $1.50 a pound and $2.00 a pound for express service.

5.  Sell scrap metals.   Selling scrap metals, including aluminum cans, old washing machines and other metal items you need to get rid of, or your friends and neighbors want to get rid of can be a great way to get some easy cash from your local scrap metal yard.  And depending on what type of metal it is, the payout can be significant.

6. Provide sitting services.   Let your friends know that you can babysit for them.  You’d be surprised how many couples are looking for a good babysitter so they can have night out, etc.   Many people are caregivers for their elderly parents or grandparents and need regular or occasional sitters.  House sitting and dog sitting and dog walking are other options.

7. Provide cleaning services.  Provide outstanding cleaning services and you can make great money locally.   During the spring months, offer a spring cleaning special on local bulletin boards.  Tell your friends and family members to keep you in mind and tell others about your services.   I have a friend who works a few hours a week cleaning several houses regularly and she makes more than $1200 a month.

8. Cook meals/personal chef services.  If you are an excellent cook (and it enjoy it), create a menu of your best dishes and price them and market them through your neighborhood association, church or local grocery store.  If you really want to make the effort, offer personal chef services by appointment where you’d cook in a person’s home for a special dinner or party.

9.  Plan children’s birthday parties or other events.  For the resourceful, creative person who loves or organize events, you can make good money locally by establishing yourself as the local party planner.   Set a reasonable planning fee either for the whole package or per hour.  You will need to be sure all expectations are defined and then build in contingencies for last-minute changes, etc.   Another way to make money is to create strong relationships with local vendors such as florists, space jump providers, party rental services, DJ’s and other entertainers, etc.  If you consistently go to the same vendors for all your needs, you can sometimes get a consistent referral fee from them or you can tack on a 10% or 15% charge of a vendor’s services to your overall bill to the client.

10. Have a yard sale. Yard sales can be a good way to earn some extra money and get rid of some extra items in storage.   One way to make it more profitable is to talk to your neighbors about having a block-wide yard sale.  Combine your advertising efforts.

There are multiple ways to earn kicks and the points really add up quickly.

Honey is a great browser app that finds coupon codes while you are shopping. So if you go to a site and search for a product, Honey will notify you if there’s a lower price somewhere else, and if there is a coupon code. The browser app is available for free download on Chrome and it boasts 30,000 stores ranging from retail, to travel and even restaurants.  The average savings is close to 18%.

Craypay is an app that allows you to buy gift cards at discounted prices. They boast 150,000 locations and online merchants for apparel, electronics, food & entertainment and groceries. The average discount on gift cards is 5 percent.

Ibotta is one of my very favorite apps. Traditionally, it has been a great way to get cash back on offers like groceries, personal care products, pet supplies, and wine and spirits, which the app still offers. But Ibotta also offers cash back for online shopping at many of your favorite stores, cash back on gift cards purchases, national restaurants, delivery services and more. It is my number one go-to app for cash back and it really adds up.

A huge swath of the population is now participating in the gig economy. Gig workers are online contractors, freelancers, online platform workers and temporary workers. Some estimates state that about 36 percent of workers are involved with the gig economy.  That’s 57 million individuals and the numbers are expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. 

It’s a great time to begin to supplement your income through freelancing or gig jobs.  Many people also work entirely in the gig economy, opting for more freedom and variety than the traditional office or blue-collar job. 

Earn Extra Money

There are many platforms that allow individuals to sign up to advertise their services and one that I especially like is Thumbtack.

Thumbtack is platform where individuals can offer services locally.  It’s free to create a “Pro” profile and independent workers can generate leads through the site by including reviews, prices, and featured projects.

Thumbtack professionals offer all types of services, from wedding officiants, to writing services, lawncare, handyman, tutoring and home repair and many things in between.  Pros can choose only the jobs they are interested in.  

When a customer needs a professional, they’ll put in their location, their project details, and their deadline. Thumbtack matches them with a list of professionals that could be a good fit. If what the customer wants matches the type of project the professional wants to do, they’ll be added to the list.

While I am not a professional on Thumbtack, I have used the service numerous times.  For example, I recently used to Thumbtack to search for a furniture repairman in my area.  I needed a mechanical fix to a recliner I had.  I typed in furniture repair, put in my need and individuals emailed my Thumbtack inbox to offer their services and quoted a price.  Your information is anonymous until you decide to hire someone.

There is a huge demand for people to teach English online to non-native speakers, particularly for Chinese students. More and more online companies are seeking English as a Second Language teachers or tutors with various levels of experience and education to meet this demand. These types of online jobs can be a great source of extra money or even a full-time gig.

Pay can range from $10-$25 an hour or more, depending on your experience, education and how often you are available to teach.  The companies I have researched offer an array of opportunities with varying requirements.  Some companies require a college degree, others don’t. Some prefer you have some teaching experience, while others only require that you be a native English speaker. Check out my list of 13 companies that pay you to teach English below.

1.) Berlitz– Teachers make an average of $14.50 an hour at Berlitz. They hire part-time teachers to teach a number of languages. They hire online teachers and tutors as well as onsite teachers at one of their 50 locations across the United States. Requirements to teach English are:

• • Must be a native English speaker.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent
  • Teaching experience is not required but is a plus.

2.) Cambly – Cambly pays pay $0.17 per minute ($10.20/hour). Getting started is as simple as creating an account. You can teach English online without a degree on your schedule.

3.) DaDa – Pays online teachers up to $25 an hour. Teachers must work a minimum of four hours a week and can work up to 20 hours weekly. Instructors teach Chinese children between 4-16 years old.  Requirements are:

• Native English speaker
• Hold a BA degree or above
• Stable and strong internet connection
• Teaching experience is preferred
• TESOL/TEFL certification is preferred, or willingness to obtain certification

4.) English Hunt – This company pays an average of $10 an hour for phone teachers to conduct conversational English classes via a softphone app installed on your computer. Requirements include:

• Applicants must have at least 48 college credit hours, OR an ESL certificate.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.

5.) GoFLUENT – Reportedly pays between $14-$16 an hour for online teachers. Hires corporate language trainers. Corporate English Trainer requirements include:

• Have some business and/or corporate experience.
• Be a Native English speaker with excellent communication skills.
• Applicants should be American, Canadian or British citizens.
• Some college is required; degree is preferred.

6.) iTalki – iTalki lets you set your own rates, so you make what you think your time is worth. You can also work anytime you’d like. iTalki is seeking teachers/tutors for various languages including English. There are two types of jobs available: Professional Teacher who teach courses and perform conversational tutoring and Community Tutor who do conversational tutoring. iTalki is seeking teachers/tutors for various languages including English. Requirements are:

Professional Teachers

• Native speaker who is professionally certified or experienced in teaching a language as a foreign or second language.
• Must provide documents outlining your professional training or experience.
• 1 to 3 minute introductory video.

Community Tutors

• Native speaker that enjoys teaching informally. 18 years or older.
• 1 to 3 minute introductory video.

7.) Landi English – Teachers are paid between $18 and $25 an hour.  Applicants must commit to teaching at least 12 hours a week.  Students range in age from 5 to 10 years old.  Requirements include:

• Bachelor’s degree or above preferred.
• TEFL/TESOL/CELTA or other teaching certificate preferred.
• Teaching experience preferred.
• Excellent communications skills.

8.) Learnlight – This company hires online language teachers. The reportedly pay about $14 an hour.  Requirements include:

• Native English speaker
• ESL or other educational field qualifications and/or experience
• Business experience is also highly-valued

9.) Open English – Pays $13 an hour. They hire practicing ESL and TESOL teachers.

10.) QKids – QKids pays between $16 and $20 an hour for teaching English online to Chinese students. The requirements for teachers are:

• Must reside in the US or Canada and either have a degree or currently be enrolled in a university program.
• Applicants must provide a current resume, their availability, their computer SPECS.
• Selected applicants must also provide a two-minute introduction video: Introduce yourself, where you live, your educational background, and any experience teaching or working with kids. Then tell or read a children’s story.

11.) SameSpeak – Native English speakers may apply to be an English speaking coach. Coaches provide online conversational lessons. SameSpeak pays $10 for every half-hour tutor session. Applicants can be as young as 16.

12.) SayABC –This company pays $21 per 40-minute session. The growing list of countries where teachers may apply include the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Among the requirements are:

• Must be a native English speaker
• Computer with fast internet connection and audio/video capability
• Bachelor degree or above, or in the final year of study.

13.) VIPKid– Earn between $14 and $22 an hour providing one-on-one instruction to Chinese children in English.  There are three basic requirements teachers must meet to teach for VIPKID:

• • You are eligible to work in the United States or Canada.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • You have at least one year of experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring. You do not need an education credential or experience in ESL.

How do I begin?

How do I qualify for writing assignments?

There are a couple of different paths to qualify for writing assignments.  To qualify for the best assignments you need to achieve Expert Writer Status.  To do that you can:

Establish your existing writing credentials or you can complete Brandbuilder assignments that will be evaluated by Article Document’s Editors.

If you have experience as a technical writer, in journalism or marketing communications, you can also qualify as an Expert Writer by uploading your resume and links to your writing samples.

Those with less writing experience can complete Brandbuilder assignments to improve writing skills and be evaluated by the platform’s editors.

Each writer is given a score of 1-10 that is based on a number of factors such as command of grammar, originality, style and logic.  The higher your score, the more paid opportunities you are able to get.

Writers can qualify as an expert in one of 50 plus industries, such as personal finance, food and drink, budget travel.  You can qualify as an expert for up to 3 industries.

Expert Writers are those with a writer rating of 9 or 10.  They are offered writing jobs at a fixed rate with increasing rates the more they write, and they can accept only those they wish to pursue.

Those who don’t initially achieve the writer rating for paid jobs can continue to qualify by taking on more Brandbuilder assignments.

What about Simple Social Share assignments?

When you sign up for an account, you can connect your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to the platform. Article Document evaluates your social media and assigns you a Brand Value score.  The score is based on your engagement rate and your follower count.

Once you have achieved a Brand Value score of at least 400 you are eligible to receive paid Simple Share assignments.

Simple Share assignments are just like any other influencer program. Assignments will detail what the third party would like for you to post and on what channels.  It also details what you are paid and the timeline.  You are free to accept or not accept any assignments that are available to you.

I’ve enjoyed using Article Document over the past couple of years to earn money by accepting some of their writing assignments. If you aren’t an experienced writer, this is a great site to test your skills and receive some very valuable feedback to improve.

One of my favorite ways to make extra money is through smartphone apps. It’s true that you probably aren’t going to get rich from any app that you download onto your phone. But there is such variety in apps these days that enables you to find the ones that really cater to your interests and needs. There are great apps that can bring in cash every month to contribute to bills, add to savings or for other expenses.

I am always looking for the next cool app to try and I thought it would be helpful to compile a list to give readers a good snapshot of the types of apps out there that enable you to earn extra money. These 101 smartphone apps pay you for various activities. Some of them pay for multiple things and I’ve tried to categorize them to give you the best idea. Apps do come and go all the time, and some of the ones on this list are better than others. So, I do urge you to do your own research with the apps on the list so you can find which ones you decide are worth your time.

Nearly all the apps I have listed have both iOS and Android versions. In some cases, I have linked to an app’s website where you can download the version of your choice and learn more about the app, and in some cases, I have linked to the app in the iTunes Store or Google Play Store.

Inboxdollars – Get paid to complete surveys, complete offers, watch videos, surf the web and more.  For every friend who signs up using your referral link, you get 10% of their qualified earnings.  Oh, and they get a $5 welcome bonus just for signing up!

Vindale Research – $5

Vindale Research – Vindale is a high-paying survey site that offers a variety of new surveys every day for you to choose from. Take advantage of their referral program and you get $5 for each friend who signs up after they complete at least one survey.

Ebates – $15

Ebates – Ebates allows you to earn up to 40% cash back at more than 2,000 stores when you shop.  Each new referral gets a $10 sign up bonus after they spend $25 at a participating retailer and you get $15.

Dosh – $5

Dosh – Who doesn’t like to get cash back when you shop?  Dosh is an app that gives you cash back on many well known national retailers every single time you shop.  Refer your friends and after they sign up and connect a credit or debit card you earn $5 and they earn a $5 sign up bonus as well!

Fiverr – $5

Fiverr is one of the largest online marketplaces offering freelance services that begin around $5. When you recommend a friend, you earn $5 after they place their first order.

Zulilly – $15

Zulilly is an e-commerce site that offers daily deals on thousands of items from up-and-coming brands and household names. Membership to the site is free. You earn a $15 shopping credit when a new member joins Zulily and completes a purchase.

Sams Club – $10

Sam’s Club members can earn a $10 e-gift card for referring friends. When you send a friend your unique referral link (found here), and they sign up, you’ll collect a $10 e-gift card, and they’ll collect a $20 e-gift card.

Swagbucks – $3

Who doesn’t like earning cash for watching videos, shopping, completing surveys and playing online games? Swagbucks pays you for all of this. When your friends sign up you get $3 and 10% of their earnings for life!  Can’t beat that.
