ALBUM REVIEW

First off, maximum respect to 17 North Parade and VP Records for placing a priority on releasing anthologies from those roots artists we love. Their recent compilations, including Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Barrington Levy anthologies, include 2 or more CDs and some contain even a DVD of notable performances/interviews. Thanks especially to Zack Reed in Promotions for making sure that we here at WORLD-A-REGGAE have a chance to listen to these new releases and let our readers know what we think of them. They have each been stellar in my opinion and I would recommend to any reggae fan reading this to go online and grab them. The song selection, sound quality, and sleek, lightweight packaging is the best on the market right now.

There is a duality to Yellowman which makes this latest compilation an important one in the excellent series of reggae anthology compilations they have been releasing of late. This deejay, singer, and performer is a very important figure in the evolution of reggae in that he brought excitement back to the music with a focus on the live performance. He comes to prominence in the early 80s, and reaches superstardom in 1983 with the album Zungguzungguguzungguzeng and an unforgettable appearance in Jamaican Dancehall Volcano Hi-power 1983. In his prime, there was no man (or woman) who could outperform “King Yelowman” onstage. He would simply light the club on fire and whip the audience into a frenzy. High, high energy shows, intelligent and well-crafted lyrics, and an endless appetite for the ladies. That is Yellowman.

On the other hand, while he brought back an energy and excitement to the sound that had been missing since Bob Marley, probably the greatest stage performer Jamaica has ever known, passed from this plane of existence, he was also part of the movement that introduced “slackness” to the music. Slackness would kill the whole sound and vibe, and fans (especially outside of Jamaica) began to look away. Although it appeared that slackness was killing the music, it was the financing of the music that was at the root of the problem. Drugs, especially crack cocaine hit the island hard like a hurricane and drug money was rife in the music business, financing many of the infamous dancehall tunes we all remember and love. Money determines which songs are made, which riddims are used, and which singers will bless the mic and dirty money is the toughest negotiator. Until the streets were cleaned up, and the drug pushers in jail or dead, the music would suffer.

Hip hop fans will be most interested with this set as no other Jamaican artist had as much influence on the genre as did King Yellow. The “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” riddim, first cut by Alton Ellis in 1967 at Studio One as “Mad Mad Mad” was the foundation riddim for many hit rap songs by artists such as KRS-One, Sublime, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Blackstar, formed by Mos Def and Talib Kweli. While Yellowman generally gets the credit for influencing hip-hop, it is no doubt Errol “Flabba” Holt and the Roots Radics band who are responsible for either writing or perfecting the riddims that were eventually lifted by hip hop artists and used as the jump-off for a career in hip hop.

King Yellowman downplays his role in the creation and forwarding of slackness in the dancehall. “What dem call slackness, me call reality” is what he told the press. To this day, King Yellowman is a giant in the history of Jamaican music – a man whose name and face are recognized the world over. This compilation finds its place at both the center of any respectable reggae collection, and in the car stereo of any music fan looking to bob their head and have some fun. The duality of Yellowman.

‘LA SI DAH’ DEBUTS ON THE CHARTS AND CAS’ PROLIFIC TOURING SEES HIM ADDING NEW DATES INCLUDING A SHOW WITH SHERYL CROW AND MORE EUROPEAN ADDITIONS.

“Cas’ new album expresses his growth not only as a person, but in the studio and in his music. The diversity of La Si Dah showcases the many sides of him. It’s wonderful to see his fans embrace Cas from album to album with such strong support,” says Easy Star CEO Eric Smith.

Cas has also added more tour dates to his already prolific tour schedule including a solo acoustic show with the legendary Sheryl Crow on June 13 at Innsbrook After Hours in Richmond, VA. He joins his band for shows in San Diego, Los Angeles and Scottsdale, AZ, right after. In July, he heads to Europe for his first tour on the continent, which will bring him to Germany, Switzerland, Holland and the Czech Republic. And he has already seen his Fall begin to fill up with appearances at Shangri-La Festival in September, Yonder Mountain String Band’s Harvest Festival in October, and plenty of college and university shows slated throughout.

Press accolades for La Si Dah have been pouring in from a diversity of media outlets.

“La Si Dah is a music lover’s album. And while mixing genres is more art than science, more instinct than formula and more heart than head, Haley proves it can be done and delivers again with La Si Dah.”
 – The Pier

“Cas Haley is one of the finest voices in music today. Cas is a soul man joyfully playing in a reggae river.” – Angelica Music

“La Si Dah is an album that calls you to run away with it, and it’s a call that’s difficult to resist.” – LA Examiner

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—A lineup of artists including Jacob Hemphill & Trevor Young, Junior Marvin, Citizen Cope, David Hinds, Toshi Reagon, Speech, Alice Smith, Rocky Dawuni, and Roots Radics will salute legendary reggae singer Bob Marley as the Kennedy Center, in collaboration with the GRAMMY Museum®, presents The Legacy of Bob Marley on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The evening will celebrate the international artistic and social influence of singer Bob Marley and his music. Artists are subject to change.

In the words of his daughter Cedella, Bob Marley “made his reggae music to uplift us, inform, entertain, inspire, and make change in the world. He’s a musician, a poet and songwriter, a philosopher, a soldier, an activist, and a leader.” Born in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, Marley became the catalyst in the popularization of reggae, taking a genre born in the streets of Kingston and turning it into one of the most recognizable music forms in the world. Songs like “Redemption Song,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” “One Love,” and “Stir It Up” are as popular today as they were during his lifetime. His influence around the world remains unparalleled, irrespective of race, color, or creed.

Mavado is the latest big name dancehall act to call out Jamaican authorities since passing the Noise Abatement Act into law.

The act imposed strict noise and time constrain on Jamaica’s iconic street dance culture and other forms of entertainment on the island.

According to Mavado, they are killing dancehall culture with the NoiseAbatement Act.

“Everywhere in the world you go people know Jamaica for reggae music, sports and entertainment,” Mavado told Irie FM. “When you make dancehall suffer you make the youths that eat off dancehall suffer. When you lock off dancehall and those things you’re killing dancehall and your killing the culture of the country.”

These days Mavado spend most of his time in the U.S. touring and recordingnew material. The Gullyside singjay is also signed to Cash Money Records.

Dancehall music has seen a resurgence in recent years with several hip-hop artists doing crossover danceall singles.

Rap legend Snoop Dogg, now Snoop Lion, has also made a full transformation from hip-hop to reggae with a full length reggae album.

The Noise Abatement Act in Jamaica has been one of the most controversial law imposed on dancehall in recent history.
