The Rise of Role-Playing Games (RPG)

Role-playing games (RPG) are the ‘in’ thing among the youth today. Actually, this has been the case in the last five years or so. Here in Manila, not all homes have a computer. That’s the reason why internet cafes have mushroomed like crazy in the city. That’s also the reason why the RPG trend has been sustained, even flourishing at that. If you’re a parent of a ten-year old boy, now you could probably guess where your son goes to after class.

One of the more popular RPG these days is the DEUS EX. According to Wikipedia, it’s “a cyberpunk-themed action role-playing game developed by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000, which combines gameplay elements of first-person shooters with those of role-playing video games.” Cool game, eh?

I believe my brother has played it before, spending most of his allowance on internet cards than food. He seems to be more interested in girls now, but that’s a different story. I remember he once asked me to get him a Microsoft XBOX as birthday present because he wanted to play DEUS EX at the comforts of our home. But the frugal me didn’t give in to his request and instead, just gifted him with a new mobile phone.

If you’re really into RPG like the one I mentioned above, I suggest you invest in it by buying your own game. There are many online shops that sell them. Just make sure you deal with a legit one so you don’t end up wasting your money.

Infant Nutrition: The Benefits of Alpha Protein

Infant nutrition is crucial to every newborn's health and well-being. Children are lucky these days because science and technology are continually advancing which pave the way to the development of new food sources, preventive measures and medical treatments that help strengthen their immune system for optimum health. One good example in this direction is alpha protein.

Alpha Protein Proven to Improve Infant’s Long-Term Health

Cases of long-term health problems like obesity, cardiovascular ailments, and insulin resistance have been increasing year after year. These have prompted medical professionals to look beyond medical treatments and seek effective preventive measures. Infant nutrition, particularly protein intake during the early stages of infancy, has been identified in strengthening or weakening a person’s long-term health.

Controlled random examinations in preterm and term infants cited by the research paper, “Early origins of cardiovascular disease. Is there a unifying hypothesis?” by Lucas Singhal, proved that “early nutrition has a major impact on long-term health including cognitive function, bone health, and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Atul Singhal, a professor of Pediatric Nutrition and deputy director of the University College London, explained in a forum that the long-term growth and development of infants depended not just on the quantity of nourishment they receive but on the quality as well. He also heads the Clinical Trials and Cardiovascular Nutrition group at the MRC Childhood Nutrition Research Centre’s Institute of Child Health at University College London, which researched on “The Importance of Protein for Long-term Health.”

Although a high protein intake may improve and accelerate young infants’ growth, parents should focus on the quality of protein they feed their babies. “While a higher protein intake has short-term advantages for growth, adverse programming by high protein intake and faster growth suggest that the optimum nutrition of infants is more complex than simply ‘more is better,’” said Dr. Singhal.

Alpha protein or á-lactalbumin is beneficial to the overall health of infants. Unlike other whey-based proteins, alpha protein is easily digested by babies and lessens the possibility of vomiting, spitting up, or food intolerance of babies. This important protein helps improve the kidney function of babies and the absorption of essential minerals like zinc.

Alpha protein also enhances babies’ sleep patterns and appetites. It contains helpful amino acids with tryptophan which also enhance the disposition or mood of children. Children who are given alpha protein are healthier and stand to have more enduring health benefits.

I planned of attending a Halloween Party but a vicious typhoon messed with it and it didn't push through. The money and other resources to be used for the Halloween Party was donated instead to the typhoon victims. Because of it, my plan to shop for Halloween costumes for adults fizzled out. But it's okay, the money went to good use.

If you're looking for Halloween costumes for adults, you can get lots of ideas (and shops) online. Wear something different and create your own spooky character. Be the face of the party. The same can be done to your kids who are attending a Halloween Party and doing tricking or treating, too.

INC Leader Ka Erdie Manalo Dies at 84

Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) leader Ka Eraño G. Manalo died of cardio-pulmonary arrest yesterday. This was confirmed by the INC-owned television network. He was 84.

Ka Erdie Manalo's remains will be brought to Templo Sentral of the Iglesia ni Cristo in Quezon City. The country mourns the death of this great spiritual leader. May his soul rest in peace.

There's no live streaming of the necrological services for the late INC leader Ka Erano Manalo yet. Stay tuned for more updates.

Just a while ago, Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez was crowned Miss Universe 2009. She bested 84 contenders from around the world, including our very own Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo. I was able to watch the coronation ceremony and it was fabulous. International music artist Heidi Montag performed there live, to the delight of the audience. If you didn't catch it and would like to watch the Miss Universe 2009 Video Replay online, I suggest you go to Youtube. I'm sure many people have uploaded it.

The publicity Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo got in her own country was enormous. However, it seemed it wasn't enough to help her get the coveted Miss Universe crown that is allegedly valued at US$120,000. No regrets because she's already a winner having been sent to the Bahamas Islands to compete. Still, the Filipino nation is proud of her.

The other winners include Miss Dominican Republic Ada de la Cruz (first runner up) and Miss Kosovo Marigona Dragusha (second runner up) along with two others.

During last year's Miss Universe pageant, it was also Miss Venezuela who won. They're really very lucky when it comes to beauty pageants.

According to the news, it is best to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower in the US West Coast between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. This year, this heavenly display is expected to take place on August 11 and 12. It is known as the 'Tears of St. Lawrence' as St. Laurence died August 10.

Everyone is hoping that this year's Perseid Meteor Shower will produce more shooting stars. It's surely gonna be an spectacular heavenly experience. You know you wouldn't want to miss that.
