At least 12 people have died after a TransAsia Airways plane clipped a bridge and crashed into a river near the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) broadcast footage of the plane almost submerged in the Keelung river.

Rescue teams are alongside the plane trying to rescue several people still trapped inside.

Fifty-eight people were onboard the domestic flight, and a number of people were reportedly injured.

Footage of the plane apparently filmed from inside passing cars showed it banking sharply, hitting a taxi and clipping the bridge before crashing into the river.

Ken Kuan who works nearby, saw the plane just before it hit the bridge and says he thinks the pilot was trying to avoid crashing into buildings.

His aircraft was the first from the US-led coalition against IS to be lost over the group's territory since air strikes on its positions in Syria were launched in September.

It is still not clear why the jet crashed - US officials denied IS claims that it was hit by a heat-seeking missile - but Lt Kasasbeh was found by militants and paraded on camera within hours.

During President Obama's recent trip to India, persuaded India’s government to create an insurance pool to compensate victims of a potential disaster and to cap the liabilities of companies supplying the technology.

This is hardly a victory for the US or for India. It no longer makes sense for any country to install a technology that can create a catastrophe such as Chernobyl or Fukushima — especially when far better alternatives are available.

The White House is claiming victory for a breakthrough in the impasse with India over nuclear energy. Indian laws have held suppliers, designers and builders of nuclear plants liable in case of an accident and this made American companies fearful of doing business here.

Technologies such as solar and wind are advancing so rapidly that by the time the first new nuclear reactors are installed in India, they will be less costly than nuclear energy. Most importantly, the alternative technologies are cleaner and safer.

Take solar energy, which has become a political hot potato in the US because of Obama’s support of solar companies that failed. Critics are arguing that solar is inefficient, too expensive to install and unreliable, and will fail without government subsidies.

Indian Railways announces "book train ticket online, pay on delivery" system

For the first time, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is offering the cash-on-delivery option for railway tickets bought online.

The service is aimed at targeting customers who are reluctant to use their bank credit card or those who don't have net-banking enabled bank account or cards.

"A customer has to book the ticket online and can make payments at the time of delivery of tickets," said an official.

The scheme has been launched on pilot basis and the service will be available in more than 200 cities initially. The delivery charges will be similar to IRCTC I-tickets: Rs 40 will be charged for delivery of each sleeper class ticket and Rs 60 for an AC class ticket.

RBI held interest rates steady at 7.75 and cuts cut the statutory liquidity ratio

RBI on Tuesday Feb 3, 2015 held interest rates steady at 7.75 per cent after easing monetary policy just three weeks ago, leaving its next move probably until after the government presents its annual Budget at the end of this month.

Also RBI cut the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) — or the amount of bonds that lenders must set aside — by 50 basis points to 21.5 per cent of deposits from February 7, prodding banks to increase lending.

The RBI said in its statement that it wanted more comfort that inflation would continue to ease and that it would await action from the government regarding the country's finances.

An average consumption of alcohol by a keralite is about 8.3 liters per year, more than double the national average. Authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala have outlined plans to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol to tackle the state's drink problem.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the state government was in favour of "total prohibition". From next April, only 5-star hotels will be granted bar licences. Though hundreds of bars will close in the next few months, government-run liquor stores ( beverages store ) will be phased out more gradually over the next 10 years. There are arguments against government's decision that this will have an adverse effect on revenue and tourism in the state. Liquor stores will be phased out gradually, but 400 bars are closing immediately and another 312 will lose their licences by March 2015. 10 per cent of the retail liquor stores in the state would be closed every year till there is none left by 2023.

A total of 730 bars serving alcohol will be shut.
Sundays will be added to existing alcohol-free days on the first day of every month
Only luxury hotels ( five star hotels) will be allowed to serve alcohol from next year.
10% of the 338 liquor shops owned by a state-run monopoly will be shut every year.
The state should be prepared to accept total prohibition within 10 years.

In Islamabad Pakistan, anti government protests are being conducted against Government lead by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahirul Qadri and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan and their supporters. There is no end to the stalemate over the two-week long crisis. protesters are demanding the resignation of Nawaz Sharif and his near ones from top positions in government.

Sharif has hardened his stand saying that he will neither resign nor go on leave and labelled the demostrations as anti-democratic.

Addressing a meeting of leaders of political parties in Islamabad on Monday (Sept 1, 2014) night, the Pakistani media quoted Sharif saying that he will not set a wrong precedent under which a few people take hostage the mandate of millions of people. "We have rule of Constitution here and we will not allow any one to abrogate it," he said. The meeting condemned the "irresponsible role"played by a section of media trying to create misunderstanding between institutions.

Tahirul Qadri and Imran Khan are agitating since August 14 against alleged rigging during the 2013 general elections. The political crisis has triggered violent clashes in Islamabad, leaving three persons dead and over 550 injured.

US forces continued their attack on ISIL militants in northern Iraq with three more air strikes conducted on Monday the Sept 1, 2014. The operation was conducted under authority to protect US personnel and facilities, support humanitarian efforts, and support Iraqi forces that are acting in furtherance of these objectives.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama said he had authorised armed forces to conduct targeted air strikes in support of an operation to deliver humanitarian assistance to the town of Amerli, where thousands of Shia Turkomen have been cut off from receiving food and medical supplies for two months by the IS militants.

The US president first authorised limited air strikes on IS targets August 7, as the group seized more cities and towns in its advance on Erbil, capital of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, and trapped many civilians including the minority Yazidis on Mount Sinjar.

Russia has launched a 'great war' that could claim tens of thousands of lives, Ukraine's defence ministry warns amid rebel offensive.President Putin says the rebels were trying to push government backs to protect residents from attack.

"A great war has arrived at our doorstep - the likes of which Europe has not seen since World War Two," Ukrainian Defence Minister Valeriy Heletey wrote on Facebook on Monday.

The fighting in Donetsk has intensified in recent days, with abot 700 Ukrainian soldiers taken prisoner. Ukraine's army were forced to flee Luhansk airport after an attack by what they said were Russian tanks. As many as 680 soldiers had been captured by rebels in recent clashes around Donetsk, according to state news agency UNIAN.

Russia has repeatedly denied Ukrainian and Western accusations that it is providing troops and equipment to the rebels.

Russia's foreign ministry said it was "hard to believe that such statements can be made by the defence minister of a civilised state".

The Economic Survey 2013-14 reveals India's GDP growth rate at 5.4 - 5.9%

As per the The Economic Survey 2013-14, Indian economy registered a GDP growth of 5.7 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2014-15. The Indian economy registered its highest growth in nine quarters this financial year.

Agriculture and allied sector grew at 4.7 per cent, while industry grew at 0.4 per cent in 2013-14.

Consumer price inflation declined from 10.21 per cent during FY 2013-14 to about 9.49 per cent in 2013-14. However, food inflation remained stubbornly high during FY 2013-14.

India’s balance-of-payments position improved in 2013-14 with current account deficit (CAD) at 32.4 billion (1.7 per cent of GDP) as against $88.2 billion (4.7 per cent of GDP) in 2012-13.

The Survey identifies the need to address long run problems to improve the investment climate. It emphasises the need for creating a framework for low and stable inflation, setting public finances on a sustainable path by tax and expenditure reform, and creating the legal and institutionalframework for a well-functioning market economy.
