The Philatelic and Numismatics Division of San Marino has launched a new bullion-related product of one-ounce silver coins as the smallest republic in Europe seeks to enter the numismatic bullion market. As the third smallest country in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco, the fifth-smallest country in the world has developed an impressive catalogue of collector and circulation coins since their first national coinage was produced and released in 1864. As part of an agreement between Italy and San Marino, Sammarinese coinage was produced in denominations and specifications as Italian coinage and was denominated as the Sammarinese lire. Both currencies were interchangeable at an equal value and as denominations in Italy were removed from circulation and new values added, these coins were also replicated in San Marino. With the entry of Italy into the eurozone in 2002, coins of San Marino were also denominated in euros, although the country is not a member-state of the eurozone. The choice to dedicate the first coin in this new annual series to the peregrine falcon is to be found in the elegance of these native birds of prey that nest in niches in the cliffs near San Marion’s First Tower on the summit of Mount Titano.

The silver coins are produced by the Austrian Mint at their facilities in Vienna on behalf of the State Treasury — Banca Centrale della Repubblica di San Marino. The reverse side of the coin is created by the artist Anna Schlindner, who has depicted a peregrine falcon in flight. The inscription PEREGRINE FALCON is shown along the upper left rim with the additional text SAN MARINO and the year 2024 is placed along the top rim. The coins’ specifications and denomination 1 OZ · Ag 999 · 5 EURO are shown along the lower rim. The reverse side depicts the image of the official coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino, designed by Antonella Napolione. The crest, which illustrates three towers topped with feathers on a mountain within a crowned shield, is believed to have been first used in the 14th century and is featured on the national flag. The text REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO encircles the crest.

(Virginia Beach, Virginia) — Following a nineteen-year career as Publisher at Whitman Publishing, Dennis Tucker will retire at the end of February 2024. He plans to spend time with family in the United States and the Philippines while pursuing creative and philanthropic projects.

Tucker has served Whitman as its publisher from December 2004, when the company was owned by Atlanta-based Anderson Press, through its recent acquisition by CDN Publishing. During that time he has overseen the publication of more than 300 titles ranging from 64-page monographs to 1,504-page references in the fields of numismatics, banking and financial history, the American presidency, U.S. military history, and other nonfiction topics.

“Dennis Tucker has been a loyal leader and a guiding figure in our business,” said Whitman president Mary Burleson. “He has built lasting relationships with researchers and numismatic industry leaders, developed and mentored our editorial staff, worked as an advocate for readers and a partner for authors, and served as an ambassador to the numismatic community and non-collectors alike. I want to publicly thank Dennis for his dedication over a long and productive career.”

Tucker has been part of the modern renaissance in numismatic publishing that started in 2003 with the addition of Q. David Bowers as Whitman’s numismatic director. He helped develop more than two dozen volumes in the best-selling Bowers Series, as well as the popular “100 Greatest” library, many encyclopedic reference books, and twenty editions of the Red Book, which sold more than six million copies during his tenure.

An award-winning author himself, Tucker wrote the Whitman book American Gold and Silver: U.S. Mint Collector and Investor Coins and Medals, Bicentennial to Date (2016). He has written more than 400 articles published in commercial, scholarly, and popular numismatic journals and periodicals; given more than 40 numismatic presentations and lectures nationwide; taught courses at the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar at Colorado College; and been interviewed for hobby and mainstream media including NPR’s “Planet Money” and “Morning Edition.”

He has earned numerous hobby recognitions including the ANA’s Glenn B. Smedley Memorial Award. In 2020 he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Andy Beshear for his career in publishing and for promoting the Commonwealth’s numismatic history. In 2021 he was named by Coin World as one of the most influential people in numismatics from 1960 to 2020.

After his retirement Tucker will continue in various numismatic roles and activities, including as secretary pro tem of the Rittenhouse Society, and as coauthor (with Coin World editor Steve Roach) of the ANA’s “Collecting Friends” blog column. He will finish his second term this year as numismatic specialist of the Treasury Department’s Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, and he serves as chairman of the board of directors of Brayhope Farm, Inc., a New York charitable nonprofit that offers community health and educational programs for autistic children and others with physical, developmental, behavioral/emotional, and sensory needs.

“My time with Whitman has been a dream come true, one of the great pleasures in my life,” Tucker said. “The people involved—collectors, dealers, researchers, writers, historians, and co-workers—have made it a rich and fulfilling journey. I look forward to remaining active in numismatics and keeping in touch with my many friends in and around the hobby.”

With a heart full of gratitude and a legacy built with unwavering dedication, Dennis Tucker steps into retirement with immense pride, cherishing the memories created, and the impact made throughout an extraordinary career.

The three-ounce and one-ounce silver Proof coins are struck in the unique shape of the USS Enterprise and produced by the New Zealand Mint at their facilities in Auckland on behalf of the Treasury of Niue. Each coin is minted with precision, bringing out every intricate detail with an oxidised (or Antique) finish which highlights much of the detail. The design includes the inscription U.S.S. ENTERPRISE and the Starship’s call letters and registration number NCC-1701 shown on the bow which is an abbreviation for Naval Construction Contract. The reverse or national side features the public seal of Niue along with the denomination 10 DOLLARS (3 oz.) or TWO DOLLARS (1 oz.) placed above the crest and the year of release, 2024, shown just below.

The Royal Mint has released the third design in their tribute series to the Iconic James Bond film franchise which first debuted in 1962. The first coin was dedicated to the decade of the 1960s and the blockbuster film You Only Live Twice, while the second coin focused on the decade of the 1970s and the film The Spy Who Loved Me.

Coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the release of Licence To Kill, the third coins pay tribute to the James Bond films of the 1980s, with commemorative coins featuring a design by award-winning graphic-design agency Bison Bison. The reverse of the coin features the Acrostar Jet that memorably appeared in the opening sequence of Octopussy, released in 1983, backed by the titles of each of the decade’s Bond films and, stylized as it appeared in the 1980s, the unmistakable 007 logo. The obverse of each coin option features the definitive effigy of HM King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings and introduced onto British commemorative and circulation type coins in 2022. The denomination from 2 POUNDS to 200 POUNDS and the year of issue 2024 also appear on the obverse as part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness.

As well as the inscription KOOKABURRA, the design includes the coin’s weight, purity, 2024 year-date, and a P125 mintmark signifying the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. As an enhanced security feature, the coin incorporates a micro-laser engraved letter which is included as an authentication feature and is found on the reverse. It is only detectable under a magnifying glass. The coin’s obverse depicts an effigy of HM King Charles III created by Dan Thorne and the legend CHARLES III AUSTRALIA, which encircles the royal portrait. The denomination of 1 DOLLAR is placed below the likeness of the King.

The Royal Canadian Mint has released new gold Proof coins which mark the centenary anniversary of the founding of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on the 1st April 1924. With the addition of this branch of the military, Canada gained its first permanent full-time air force, and its early fleet helped develop the country’s aviation programme. Its formative years and the vital role it played in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the Second World War are represented by the De Havilland DH-82C Tiger Moth depicted on this gold collector coin. In terms of practical applications, the DH-82C Tiger Moth had just one very specific role, which was that of training pilots. It served in about two-thirds of Canadian Elementary Flying Training Schools under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Besides being well suited for pilot training, the Tiger Moth had the ability to perform agile aerobatics, and with its larger canopy, it could be used as an instrument flying trainer when the cockpit was covered with its glass shield.

The reverse design by artist Neil Hamelin features the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) roundel in the background, with Canada’s iconic maple leaf at its centre. The RCAF’s early years are represented by the De Havilland DH-82C Tiger Moth, which was adopted by the RCAF in 1938 and is shown on its approach. Beneath the runway view, the soaring spirit of the RCAF is reflected in the current inspirational motto SIC ITUR AD ASTRA, which is translated from Latin as “Such is the pathway to the stars,” and is inscribed on a banner accompanied by stylised maple leaves, similar to the current RCAF badge. Above the primary design is the text CANADA with the years 1924 and 2024 placed above the wings of the approaching De Havilland DH-82C Tiger Moth. The obverse side includes the new effigy of HM King Charles III unveiled in November 2023. It is the work of Canadian artist Steven Rosati and depicts the King facing to the left surrounded by the legend CHARLES III D G REX. Below the King’s likeness is the coins’ denomination of 100 DOLLARS.

If you are considering collecting as a hobby, or if you want to update your own collection with some of the most desired coins, now is the time at the start of the New Year to save, bid on, and buy these four iconic coins, all available in lower grades or higher mintages for $300-500.

Because stories are linked with these coins, you’ll wow family, friends, and members of your local coin club when you show them.

Fugio Cent

To start the New Year a year ago, PCGS reclassified the famous Fugio cent as the earliest issue of all U.S. coins. Coin Update covered that milestone in a post titled, “It’s a Fugio cent, not a copper; and it’s about time.”

The allure of this coin is associated with Benjamin Franklin, said to have designed it. It certainly reflects his humor. The motto MIND YOUR BUSINESS encourages privacy and commerce, as in, “Take care of your business and stay out of mine.”

The term fugio in Latin means “I fly,” associated with the sundial in the center of the coin. “Time flies” is a common phrase to this day. It was Franklin, after all, who professed “Time is money” in the 1748 essay, “Advice to a Young Tradesman.”

You can secure a low-grade example for under $500. This one sold at GreatCollections for $399.

Tell the Fugio tale at your area coin club, and you’ll enchant the members.

1917 Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar Type I

You’ll want the 1917 Standing Liberty quarter dollar for two reasons — its elegant design and topless Lady Liberty.

Coin Update covered this iconic coin in a post about grading, titled,”Designations on Standing Liberty Quarters.”

Hermon A. MacNeil’s design ranks as one of the most beautiful depictions in U.S. coinage. The bare-breasted version appears on the 1916 and 1917 Type I issues. The 1916 variety has a low mintage of 52,000 and is out of the price range of most collectors. (It retails for $4,000 and Good 4 on the Sheldon 70 scale.)

The 1917 Type I was changed to Lady Liberty wearing chain mail (Type II), perhaps due to public outcry about nudity. Also, the Type I is found with San Francisco and Denver mint marks.

This one sold for $403 at GreatCollections.

Also, a word of caution: This issue gets an “R” rating at coin clubs with youth members. So show only to adults.

GSA Carson City Dollar

Another storied coin with an iconic design is the 1882-84 Carson City dollar packaged by the General Services Administration in the 1970s with a statement from President Richard Nixon:

As we approach America’s Bicentennial, this historic silver dollar is one of the most valued reminders of our national heritage.

Nixon thought he would have a second term but resigned due to the Watergate scandal in 1974.

Although the GSA holdered rarer, and non-Carson City dollars, too, you’ll want to get an affordable Morgan with the CC mint mark because of its fabled history. Best buys are the Uncirculated 1882-CC with a mintage of 1,133,000; 1883-CC, 1,204,000; and 1884-CC, 1,136,000.

<ins class="epn-placement" data-config-id="5c783e9a3cd6d724e8a32866"></ins>

Carson City, named for the frontiersman Christopher “Kit” Carson, evokes the Wild West lore of American history. Silver became prized in 1859 with the discovery of Nevada’s Comstock Lode, which drew tens of thousands of people to the area. You can read about and still visit the famed Carson City mint building.

Also, be careful not to pay more than the retail value of these coins. Some auctioneers and sellers hype the price for GSA dollars because they are so popular and in demand. They also should come with paperwork, including a certificate with the proper year in the serial number. Coin Update published a post on this topic.

This one sold for $315 at GreatCollections.

At any rate, this coin is a showstopper at coin clubs. Everyone has, wants or marvels at this specimen.

Alexander the Great Tetradrachm

When you want to discuss history with numismatic friends or family, consider an Alexander the Great tetradrachm. I teach ethics as a college professor, and I have often thought that the philosophy of Aristotle gained prominence in part because he was Alexander’s tutor.

Alexander (356-323 BC) conquered much of the known world at the time as a brilliant and merciless military strategist with conquests throughout the Mediterranean, the Persian Empire, and even parts of India.

Alexander’s tetradrachms usually show the head of Herakles donning a lion’s skin with Zeus on the reverse holding an eagle. For more details, check out Doug Smith’s educational site about these awesome coins with a weight of 17.1 grams, about 4.6 grams more than a Franklin half dollar, and 9.6 grams less than a Morgan dollar.

The above example was sold recently at GreatCollections for $262 with a buyer’s fee. Many ancient collectors do not like slabbed coins because they want to feel as well as see the tetradrachm. I understand that. But there are thousands of cast counterfeit examples on auction sites, and if you aren’t schooled in ancient numismatics, I recommend buying a holdered coin and then cracking it out.

Everyone at the coin club will want to feel its heft and history.

On January 12, 2024, a story on Politico broke that the Monnaie de Paris, caught in a rare instance of dancing with two left feet, created 27 million new 10, 20, and 50-cent coins in November before asking the European Commission for design approval. Under the condition of anonymity, a French economy ministry official noted that while the Monnaie de Paris “informally” contacted the Commission in November, it did not wait for the final OK by the Commission to approve the design. Both Commission spokesmen and Monnaie de Paris spokesmen appear to be reticent to comment on the matter, hence the aforementioned reliance on a source of anonymity.

The Commission discovered that the way the stars of the European Union flag were depicted on the new French coins was not compliant with its stringent standards. While this is a matter of stress for many mints, errors with stars are often a focus for “cherrypicking” in coin collecting, which is the art of utilizing specialized knowledge regarding coin varieties and errors and a keen eye to find the extraordinary in the otherwise ordinary to the untrained observer. However, it is quite clear that this error was not subtle.

<ins class="epn-placement" data-config-id="5cb8b0fa90ffc4600abb561c"></ins>

The same anonymous source reiterated that the Monnaie de Paris was “an autonomous public company and not part of the French administration.” In short, the Monnaie would alone and entirely bear the cost of reminting the coins to the Commission’s standards. Collectors of mint error coins might be aghast after seeing the Monnaie de Paris choose to melt down these coins and absorb the cost directly, as opposed to selling them as a novelty to raise funds. It is possible, however, that such an action would not be permitted by the European Commission as well, showing the true cost of too much oversight.

The Royal Mint released the first bullion-related product for 2024, the modern sovereign gold coin, which has been associated with every British monarch since its issue in 1817. Of course, the denomination itself enjoys a history and legacy spanning more than 500 years, since its establishment as a means of coinage in 1489 during the reign of King Henry VII.

The sovereign, equal to one pound in face value, is the most tightly specified coin in the world, representing the pinnacle in minting standards. Its purity is guaranteed to five decimal places and the weight and purity of each sovereign is assured by Royal Proclamation. The sovereign 2024 bullion coin range includes a double sovereign, full sovereign, half sovereign, and quarter sovereign, all struck in 22-carat rose-coloured gold, and to the Royal Mint’s bullion standard. Now considered the “chief coin of the world” and, for 2024, the reverse side sees a return to Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic numismatic masterpiece featuring St. George slaying the dragon with the year of release, 2024, placed below the mound. With the exception of commemorative designs, Pistrucci’s design has featured on sovereigns struck for every British monarch since the reign of Queen Victoria. This year’s sovereigns feature the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III created by sculptor Martin Jennings, following the inclusion of a crowned effigy of the monarch on the Coronation sovereign for 2023.

Washington / Wales — The United States Mint and the Royal Mint today announced the collaborative design created by both mints’ Chief Engravers for the 2024 Liberty & Britannia Program.

Following a successful joint project in 2021 featuring the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage coins and medals, the United States Mint and the Royal Mint are working together once again on a different type of project. This one features a unique design collaboration between the chief engravers of two of the world’s largest and oldest mints. The collaborative design features Liberty and Britannia, two historical themes featured on many coins over the years, but never together on one unified design. American Liberty, historically represented by a woman in her many variations, represents that bedrock value that is so important to Americans. She has appeared on U.S. coinage since the early years of the Nation. Britannia, a staple on British coinage since the late 1600s, has long been the national personification of Britain. Often a symbol of maritime power, this allegorical image has come to be a symbol of national pride and unity.

The United States and the United Kingdom have long shared a close relationship, based on common values and ideals. In this project, these two historic mints have come together in a groundbreaking creative partnership, featuring the talent and skills of each mint’s chief engraver to produce a design unifying Liberty and Britannia on one design. The United States Mint Chief Engraver, Joseph Menna, and the Royal Mint Chief Engraver, Gordon Summers, have created a stunning design, celebrating the harmony of the figures while giving each equal prominence in the design.

The design features allegorical Liberty and Britannia depicted in stoic profile portraits featuring complementary and balancing elements suggestive of the faces on a playing card. Their appearance identifies each figure; Liberty carries a torch and is adorned with stars, while Britannia wields a trident and wears a Corinthian helmet. Inscriptions will be appropriate for each nation.

“This has been an extraordinary opportunity for the United States Mint,” said United States Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson. “This occasion marks the first time that the chief engravers of both mints have collaborated on a single design. The combination of their artistic talents has resulted in a truly unique design that will surely be a collecting standout. Our hope is that this project expands the reach of both mints and leads to more opportunities for growth between our institutions.”

Nicola Howell, Chief Commercial Officer at the Royal Mint, comments: “I am delighted that our two great institutions have collaborated on this project, resulting in such an exquisite design, and making numismatic history by collaborating on a reverse design for the first time. The combined expertise of our chief engravers has resulted in something very special for customers across the world. Further to the design, the product available from the Royal Mint will be across both commemorative and bullion, offering customers the option to purchase a stunning collectible as well as offering an investment opportunity. As the Royal Mint grows its prominence in the U.S., this is an ideal opportunity for us to embrace the wants and needs of our international customers as we work with our counterpart across the Atlantic.”

The United States Mint and the Royal Mint will each utilize this design on products that will be available in 2024.
About the United States Mint

Congress created the United States Mint in 1792, and the Mint became part of the Department of the Treasury in 1873. As the Nation’s sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage, the Mint is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The Mint also produces numismatic products, including Proof, Uncirculated, and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; silver and bronze medals; and silver and gold bullion coins. Its numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to taxpayers.

About the Royal Mint

The Royal Mint has an unbroken history of minting British coinage dating back over 1,100 years. Based in the Tower of London for over 500 years, by 1812 the Royal Mint had moved out of the Tower to premises on London’s Tower Hill. In 1967, the building of a new Royal Mint began on its current site in South Wales, U.K., to accommodate the minting of U.K. decimal coinage. Today, the Royal Mint is the world’s largest export mint, supplying coins to the U.K. and overseas countries. The Royal Mint has also diversified into a number of other complementary businesses, building on the values that have been at the heart of the organization throughout its history — authenticity, security, precious metals, craftsmanship, and design.
