Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland. They rise 120 metres (390 feet) above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag's Head, and reach their maximum height of 214 metres (702 feet) just north of O'Brien's Tower, and range for 8 kilometres over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of County Clare. The cliffs receive almost one million visitors a year. It is a recommended site from all the tourist sites in Ireland.

The cliffs take their name from an old fort called Moher that once stood on Hag's Head, the southernmost point of the cliffs. The writer Thomas Johnson Westropp referred to it in 1905 as Moher Uí Ruis or Moher Uí Ruidhin. The fort still stood in 1780 and is mentioned in an account from John Lloyd's a Short Tour Of Clare (1780). It was demolished in 1808 to provide material for a new telegraph tower. The present tower near the site of the old Moher Uí Ruidhin was built as a lookout tower during the Napoleonic wars.

The cliffs consist mainly of beds of Namurian shale and sandstone, with the oldest rocks being found at the bottom of the cliffs. It is possible to see 300 million year-old river channels cutting through, forming unconformities at the base of the cliffs.

There are an estimated 30,000 birds living on the cliffs, representing more than 20 species. These include Atlantic Puffins, which live in large colonies at isolated parts of the cliffs and on the small Goat Island. Also present are hawks, gulls, guillemots, shags, ravens and choughs. The Cliffs of Moher are home to one of the major colonies of cliff nesting seabirds in Ireland. The area was designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) for Birds under the EU Birds Directive in 1986 and as a Refuge for Fauna in 1988. Included within the designated site are the cliffs, the cliff-top maritime grassland and heath, and a 200 metre zone of open water, directly in front of the cliffs to protect part of the birds' feeding area. The designation covers 200 hectares and highlights the area's importance for wildlife.

The cliffs have been planned and built over a 17 year period. The facility features interactive media displays which explore topics such as the origin of the cliffs in local and global geological contexts, and the bird and fish life in the area. A large-screen multimedia display allows visitors to experience a bird's eye view from the cliffs, as well as seeing the inside of underwater caves below them.

In July 2009 the Cliffs of Moher were listed for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Mount Roraima, The Mysterious Flat Mountain

Mount Roraima is a uniquely great place in Venezuela. This rock mountain has unique shape like a table placed in the cloud. It is 400 meters height (1312 feet). To get to the top of it, you need to climb a ladder track that provided by Venezuelan government. Alternatively, you can reach the top by rock-climbing.

It's almost always rain there, every plant or bush up there will sweep away, and make the top unique. It's ass clean as a table surface.

Mount Roraima became famous in 1912 after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a fiction novel called The Lost World. He climbed the mountain for expedition to find pre-historical plant species and dinosaurs believed to live there isolated and unchanged for million of years.

Conan-Doyle was inspired by English botanical expert, Everard Im Thurn who reached Mount Roraima’s top for the first time, together with Harry Perkins in 18 December 1884. They are not the first European who saw Mount Roraima. The first European who knew about it was a German explorer, Robert Schomburgk.

The route that Im Thurn and Perkins passed is now called the Im Thurn route. It is the easiest route to reach the mountain top. And after their expedition, a lot of new expedition conducted to collect and do research about flora and fauna on the top of the mountain.

Moyo Island is a small and tranquil island yet has great natural wealth. Moyo Island is located in the North of Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The beach, the sea, and the nature will give you a real tranquility to your soul. No wonder even Lady Diana and Mick Jagger ever been here.

If you're a bird lover, you will love this place. There are 124 bird species in Sumbawa, and 86 of it are living in this island. You can also find endangered species here like Yellow Head Cockatoo, and Gosong bird. You can also do snorkeling or diving here. Underwater sea park has beautiful soft and hard coral, sponge and crustaceans, even you can see a tiny shark, anemone, eel, grouper fish, and manta ray here. The diving spot is located in Medang island, in the Northwest of Moyo island.

Some of cruises sailed from Bali, Lombok or international harbors often visit this island. The trip usually layover to Moyo island and Satonda island, a small island on the Northeast of Moyo island, which has a salt water lake on the island.

After all the adventure, you can relax for a while by enjoying sunset on the beach. White sand that make the beach look more beautiful, small waves raveling, dusk on the sky make the atmosphere even romantic. This will definitely ake you forget about your tiredness and problems.

Green Canyon, Exotic Indonesian Canyon

Maybe you already know about Grand Canyon, but do you know about Green Canyon? It is one of the finest favorite travel destinations in the South Coast of West Java, Pangandaran, Indonesia. If Grand Canyon is widely-knows as having great rocks and barren land, Green Canyon has its own "style". In Green Canyon we can find lot of shady trees up on the top of the canyon, and the refreshing water of the Cijulang River.

You can explore this Canyon by two methods. First, you can feel its beauty by boat, or you can challenge yourself to do body rafting from the headwaters of Cijulang River. Put no worries on the security of body rafting. People are equipped with wear basic safety gear like foot protector, knee protector, helmet, and life vest. But you have to note that this river has big rocks, so when you cross cascade, make sure that you always look forward. When rainy season comes, the flow is swift. So I think its best for you to come here in sunny season, to make it safer.

The body rafting length itself is around 4 Km (2.5 Miles) and about 4 hours. Is it too much? I don't think you will say this when you try it. 20-30 Meter (65-98 foot) of canyon rock, and green colored clear river water will make you forget about everything. Along it, you will find a Bat Cave (maybe you can meet Batman there. Just kidding). The natives called this cave as lalay cave or smelly cave. And of course, you can go there too.

You can find an enormous number of hanging roots here. You can also enjoy the water droplets and if you're lucky, you may see a rainbow. And if you want more challenging activity, you can jump from the top of Umbrella rock. This big rock has umbrella shape, so its called Umbrella rock. Its high is around 5-7 Meter (16-23 foot), and you have to try it for yourself.

Survey Confirms Highest Marine Biodiversity on Earth
In 2002, The Nature Conservancy and our partners conducted a scientific survey of the Raja Ampat Islands to collect information on its marine ecosystems, mangroves, and forests. The survey brought Raja Ampat's total number of confirmed corals to 537 species - an incredible 75% of all known coral species. In addition, 828 fish species were recorded, raising the known total for Raja Ampat to an amazing 1,074. Though human impacts here are less severe than elsewhere in Indonesia, Raja Ampat's natural resources are endangered by overfishing and destructive fishing, turtle poaching, and unsustainable logging. This structure also offers an important opportunity to include conservation in the spatial planning of the newly formed local government.

Just the opposite is the case, however, because they scare every insect and small creature out of hiding, attract rare birds, and make for exciting portraits as they take down a scorpion, tarantula, or walking stick. They are also easy to avoid as long as one stays on the edge of the swarm and watches where one steps or places a tripod. Getting the chance to photograph these uncommon ants as they forage and attack everything in their way might also make up for a few stray bites.
Leaf-cutter Ants - quintessential, easy subjects for nature photography in the Peruvian Amazon
Unlike Army Ants, Leaf-cutter Ants are common and easy to find in the Peruvian Amazon. They are active at all times but are most industrious during the dark of the night. Their habit of following obvious trails as they carry small pieces of leaves to their underground nests makes Leaf-cutter Ants great photography subjects and especially so for kids and beginning photographers just learning how to shoot with macro lenses.
Leaf-cutter Ants make especially nice portraits when they carry bits of colorful flowers instead of the usual green bits of leaves. A good way to increase one's chances of getting photos of Leaf-cutter Ants carrying flower pieces in the Peruvian Amazon is to place some flower bits near the trail for them to find and then take photos as they carry them back to their nest.
Other insects for nature photography in the Peruvian Amazon
In addition to exciting Army and Leaf-cutter Ants, there are countless other types of insects and macro-sized creatures seen on photography tours to the Peruvian Amazon. A handful of some of the more spectacular are:
The Trap Jaw Ant - This predatory ant gets its name from its large mandibles that are held open wide at 90 degree angles to each side of its head. It catches and kills its insect prey by quickly snapping shut its powerful jaws.
Morpho Butterfly - The shining blue upperwings of this large butterfly make it look like something from another, more magical world as it flutters along streams through the rainforest. It can be difficult to capture the electric-blue colors on its wings, though, because this butterfly shows gray and brown underwings with an intricate, camouflaged pattern when it alights. Nevertheless, patient photographers may get good captures of Morphos (and other butterflies) by putting rotten fruit out for bait (their preferred food source) and waiting for Morphos to come and feed.
Owl Butterfly - The hand-sized Owl Butterfly is the largest butterfly species in the Peruvian Amazon. It gets its name from the round markings on its wings that somewhat resemble the face of an owl and are thus used to scare away potential predators. These same markings look even more beautifully patterned when magnified and thus make the Owl Butterfly a fantastic subject for macro photography in the Peruvian Amazon. Like the Morpho Butterfly, rotten fruit also works well in attracting this species for photos.
Katydids - There are literally thousands of katydid species in the Peruvian rainforest and participants on tours to the Peruvian rainforest will regal in taking their photos because every single one looks incredible. Many have antennae that are twice the length of their bodies, and they resemble the foliage in color and appearance. Their adaptations for camouflage are among the most amazing in the world as many have wings that look exactly like leaves (including markings and shapes that resemble rot, fungi, and insect-chewed foliage).
Whip Spiders - Also known as Amblypigids, these miniature monsters resemble something from nightmares or creatures from another planet when viewed with a macro lens. They have very long, pincer-like front legs and a pair of whip-like legs used to find prey. Despite their frightening appearance, they aren't venomous or dangerous. Photographers on trips to Peru should search for these interesting Arachnids in damp, dark places such as underneath logs, in caves, and in hollow tree trunks.
