Seizing the Mission of Jesus

As a believer, are you seizing the mission of Jesus? You might ask what the mission of Jesus is. So I'll start by explaining it with a writing exercise. Ok, get a piece of paper and a pen or your notepad app on your tablet or iPad. You got it yet?

Ok, write down or type out everything you know about what a Missionary does. Take 5 minutes and then continue reading...................................

Now whatever you wrote down on your paper is what YOU are supposed to do RIGHT WHERE YOU'RE AT. Really, to seize the mission of Jesus, you are a missionary. Our God is a Missionary, Jesus is a Missionary. The Church is to be a Missionary Church. The church exist for mission.

When we seize the mission of Jesus, we live out 1 Peter 2:9 which says,

...for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

By seizing the mission of Jesus, you show the goodness or the light of God. Just as God brought you out of darkness in the the wonderful light, you should share that same light to someone else who is in the dark.

How do we share the love and the light of Jesus in this world in 2014. The key is building relationships with people God puts in your path. Most of the people that you will share the light of Jesus with, God has probably already put in you path and you probably already know. You just might not know them well enough. Get to know the person at work that rubs you the wrong way. Get to know the neighbor that you don't like. Find someone that's struggling with money and help them out. There might be someone that you know is struggling in an area that you excel at. There are many people that we come in contact on a daily basis that don't know the Love of Jesus. Go share Jesus with somebody today and seize the mission of Jesus!

A Tale of Two Brothers

Here's a tale of two brothers, that happens to be dogs. They were born in April of 2010 in Alabama. They were in a litter of ten Lab pups. One golden lab went to Colorado with his new owner, Kyle. Kyle is a "Cars" fan, so he named his puppy Mater. One of the other pups was a brown lab named, Jake. He stayed on the Ketchum/Odom Hill in Alabama.

At the beginning of August, I went back to Bama to pick up Sam and Kyle, who were staying at my mom and dad's house. Kyle and I had been throwing the tennis ball with Jake and Jake never stops playin' ball. He even sleeps with his ball! In three days, we probably threw the ball 200 times to Jake. Jake is committed to playin' ball and he never gives up. He brings the ball back to you over and over and over again.

His brother, Mater, our dog in Colorado, is a different story. We love Mater and he likes to play ball, however, after about 7 or 8 times, he's done. He'd rather go do something else. And when he's done, he doesn't even bring the ball back to ya.

Jake and Mater reminds me of our Spiritual Walk with Christ. You can also call it our Discipleship Process. We are called to be Jesus' disciple. Most believers would probably ask, "Why is this so important?", and "I don't have time!" is usually the excuse. As Jake has a passion and a desire to "play ball", we should have a passion and desire to be a disciple of Jesus. The reason to be a disciple of Jesus is pretty simple...we are called to go and make more disciples. We should not only be a disciple of Jesus, we are also called to be disciplemakers. Matt 28:19 says, "Go and make disicples...".
John 20:21 says, "As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you."

How can we make disciples if we are not disciples ourselves? It's time to seize the Mission of Jesus. Jesus came to "seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10.

So are you going to be like Jake and have a strong passion and desire......ok not for fetching a ball, but to have a strong passion and desire to be a disciple of Jesus?

First Love Fellowship will be a missional church. We will seize the mission of Jesus. Over the next days, weeks, and months, we will be covering what the Mission of Jesus is, in posts on Worshipdude.net. We will also be writing about all things First Love Fellowship and the Ketchum's journey of launching this brand new church plant!

Reading Plan for the Whole Family!

We have started a Bible reading plan for the whole family for 2014 and yesterday was a discussion around the breakfast table about the first reading. It was Genesis 1 and 2 and Psalm 1. We also have my Mom, Dad, and Sherry's Mom here this week. So it was kool to get my dad in on the conversations with Jim, Sam, and Kyle. They knew the story of creation, but reading it for themselves and then talking about it, really gets them to thinking!
Our goal is to read through the Bible with them in 2014. Is it gonna be tough? Yep you better believe it, but the goal is not just to say we read though the Bible. The goal is to "ground" our kids in God's Word. If we get them grounded, they better "armed" when they go out into the world, which in Jim's case is sooner than later! He's a senior this year for those of you that don't know.

Psalms 1 was an excellent chapter to start because it talks about being grounded like a tree planted by a river. My prayer is that our kids "get" that concept!

Today's verse: Isaiah 41:10

This verse says that we don't have to be afraid, when we follow God, He promises to strengthen and help us in whatever we do. What a great promise!

Today is the last day of 2013. Today was my last reading of my Bible Plan. I did not hit my goal of reading the Bible through 100%. I read 69.3% of the Bible in 2013. I really don't like that percentage, so I will push harder in 2014. This year we will be reading together as a family. If I can encourage my kids to read the Bible and they "get it", it will be the best gift that I can give them. So we are starting tomorrow with the "Book at a Time Bible" Reading Plan by Discipleship Journal through You Version. Which leads me to my next challenge to you.

You Version is challenging everyone to pick a verse for the year. A verse to help you through 2014. Maybe a reflection for you you to focus on through the year. It might be a new discipline this year or a different way of thinking for the year. They are using a hashtag through twitter and Facebook.
It's #verse2014.

My verse for 2014 is Isaiah 40:31 which says:

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings like eagles;

they shall run and not be weary;

they shall walk and not faint.

My prayer for my family this year is that we renew our strength as we begin the process of church planting. We know that the road will be tough, be we also know what our God can do!

Yesterday's Worship, Verse of the day, and Facts about Heaven

Yesterday, I led worship for the first time in 6 months. It was a great experience! Worshiping with great musicians and great new friends was pretty kool! We've been members at River of Grace for about 4 months. It's the first time I've been a member of a church without being on it's staff in 20 years.

We've been "waiting on God" for about 4 months and that's something that I don't really enjoy, but yesterday, God encouraged me as led with a great group of musicians. Thanks Jason Burns for asking me to lead while you were away! The musicians that I led with yesterday was:

Today's verse is found in Isaiah 40:31
The verse promises that when we wait on the Lord, He will renew our strength so we can do great things for HIM. That is so kool!

Today, we were in Revelation 21, an awesome chapter of what we have to look forward to after this life comes to an end. Go read the entire chapter it's pretty awesome.

Here's ten facts about heaven:

1. It shines with the Glory of God
2. It has 12 gates guarded by 12 angels
3. Each tribes of Israel (12 of them) are written on each gate.
4. There are 3 gates on each side (North, South, East and West) of the city.
5. The wall has 12 foundation stones, each represented by the 12 apostles.
6. The city measures 1,400 miles square, length, width, and height.
7. The walls are 216 feet thick.
8. The wall is made out of jasper.
9. The foundation stones are made out of 12 different precious stones, v. 19-20
10. The city is made out of pure Gold that is clear! Can you say transparent Gold?
11. The gates are made our of pearl.
12. There is no temple because God and the Lamp are it's temple. They are also the LIGHT of the City.

Verse and Thought for the Day: At the church that I went to yesterday, Pastor Paul spoke on Hebrews 10:18-25.

Verse 24-25 says this, 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

If believers in churches would stimulate one another to love and good deeds and we would encourage one another, there would be no churches splitting. It seems that strife is all around in churches everywhere. The problem? Those same believers don't read the Bible and they don't know the TRUTH and instead they listen to Satan's lies.

2 Timothy 3:16 says:

In the King James:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

In the English Standard:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

In the New American Standard:

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for

training in righteousness;

This verse is so important for believers! It's talking about the Bible that we have in our hands. When we don't know the Word, we become weak. We can be successful, when we learn God's word. It is profitable for doctrine or teaching.

We need to learn all we can about the book that we base our Salvation on. If you believe that Jesus saved you and that you are going to heaven when you die, why wouldn't you fully immerse yourself in the Word? All around me, I see people that say they know Jesus, but they don't read their Bible and they don't even go to church every week. My question is why?

The Bible is also good for reproof and correction. Most people don't like to be corrected, I know, I don't, but that's what the Bible does. It show us when we've messed up. The Holy Spirit has alot to do with that too. If we're wrong or make a mistake, we need to realize it so we don't make the mistake again. That's what the Bible can do for us. I believe we don't want to read the Word, because we don't want to change our ways. That's a hard statement..

The Bible is also profitable for training in righteousness. When people have a job, most go to college to learn about that job. Some have on the job training. An athlete trains, and trains, and trains some more to be the best that he or she can be.
We are to train if we want to be a successful believer. We do this by learning, reading, immersing, and digesting God's word.

Let's have a passion for God! Challenge yourself today! Start reading today! You don't have to read alot, maybe a chapter. If you want to be successful in this life, start reading and growing in HIM! He'll make your life more abundant! John 10:10

As believers, we are called to be the "salt" and "light" of the world. What does that really mean? When Jesus, was on this earth, salt was very valuable and soldiers were even given salt as their paycheck. Why? Because salt preserved food. People were always needing salt. Salt was an great influence on the earth at that time. Everyone needed and wanted salt. Jesus said that we are to be salt, because everyone needs what we have, but today not everyone wants what we have. We have to be influencers!!

Have you ever been down in a cave? Usually, you have a guide with a flashlight. At one point, the guide tells you that he is going to turn the light off and he wants you to put your hand really close to your face. After he turns the light off, he asks if you can see your hand.

Anybody remember that? Could you see your hand? I couldn't.

That's our world today! It is a dark place and we've been called to be the flashlight of Jesus. Verse 16 says that we should let our good deeds shine for all to see, so that everyone will praise God. That's being an Influencer for HIM! My prayer today, as a Pastor, is that YOU can be an Influencer around your neighborhood, your family, your school, your workplace, or wherever you go for Jesus!

First Love Church

The Lord has called us to LAUNCH a new church in Pueblo West, Colorado. We are looking for people to join us and be a part of our launch team. We are having an informational meeting at the Ketchum home, this Sunday, July 7th at 6:00 pm. Come and learn more about what God is doing through First Love Church.

The name of the church is based out of Jesus’ conversation with the Lawyer in Mark 12:28-34, Matt. 22:34-40, and Luke 10:25-28. He was asked what the greatest commandment was.

The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30And you must love the Lord your

God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’

31The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

The goal of the church is to Love God and Love people. We love God through our passion and discipleship for HIM. We love people by showing them that there is a God that loves them so much that HE sent HIS Son to die on a cross to be a substitute for their sin.

Family Devo-5-14-2013

Ketchum Family Devo--Today we looked at patience from Gal. 5:23. The fourth "fruit of the Spirit". The Greek word for patience (longsuffering in the KJV) is "Makrothumia". It means endurance, constancy, steadfastness, perseverance, forbearance, longsuffering, slowness in avenging wrongs.

The fruits of the Spirit work together. If we don't have patience with one another, then we're not going to have peace with one another, the fruit that we looked at yesterday. So when we begin losing patience, we need to stop and think about how "losing patience" will affect our relationship with each other and our relationship to HIM!

In our family devo at the Ketchum house this morning, we've been looking at the Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, "But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!" NLT
Today, we focused on the third fruit, peace. In the Greek work is "Eirene". It is pronounced "i-ray'-nay". The definition for peace is: a state of national tranquillity, exemption from the rage and havoc of war, peace between individuals, i.e. harmony, concord, security, safety, prosperity, felicity, (because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous) of the Messiah's peace the way that leads to peace (salvation) of Christianity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is the blessed state of devout and upright men after death.

In our devo this morning with the kids, we focused on the peace between individuals, ie. harmony between family members. When we are about to start an argument between each other, let's consider one of the fruits of the Spirit-peace in Gal. 5:23. The Greek word for peace, "Eirene" is in the New Testament 86 times!

Where is your Mountain of God?

I found this verse the other day, although I don't think it was lost, it was the first time the I remember reading it. I found it in Micah 4:1-2:

1In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s house

will be the highest of all—

the most important place on earth.

It will be raised above the other hills,

and people from all over the world will stream there to worship.

2People from many nations will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

to the house of Jacob’s God.

There he will teach us his ways,

and we will walk in his paths.”

For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion;

his word will go out from Jerusalem.

Micah 4:1-2

So I did some research on what theses verses mean and I found that scholars disagree with when this is going to happen. I'm not going to concentrate on the prophecy. I just want to ask you a question:

Where is your Mountain of God?

My mountain is a red high backed chair in my living room. I sit in it every morning and read the WORD and I'm leaning and growing in HIM!

I believe that this can happen right now in our hearts. The second verse says that HE will teach us HIS ways and we will walk in HIS paths. That should be a life changing statement for us that are believers.

When we WALK in HIS Paths, we can do great things for HIM! WE can see our friends, family, and neighbors come to the CROSS and accept the FREE GIFT of GOD's Love. Just remember this one thing:

IT ALL STARTS WITH YOU!!

So get in the BOOK and FIND your Mountain!

Interesting Friday

Yesterday was an interesting day. I preached a funeral for a 23 year old young man, who overdosed on drugs. I did not know him but knew his aunt and her family very well. I also knew that 90 percent of the crowd would be between the ages of 18-25 and most of them did not have a relationship with Christ. The family wanted me to preach a Salvation message, which is what I would have done anyway.
Approximately 100 people attended the funeral.

The plan, that we followed was to open with a song, then hear from family and friends that talked about him, then I preached, and finally a video about him. When we got to the message and some realized that I was going to preach, around 10 people got up and left the service and began to curse while going out the door. They hung around outside until the video began and they came back in.

I was reminded of Jesus' parable of the sower in Mark 4. The seed fell in four different places. The seed fell yesterday at Broadway. It fell in different places. My prayer is that Jesus takes the seed and uses it for HIS glory. This week on three occasions, the LORD has reminded me of the importance of sharing to others what Jesus did for them. It's a BIG job, folks, but we're in a battle and that was clear yesterday at the funeral.
In Mark 4:24, Jesus said, "Pay attention!" I think HE really wanted us to know this next part. Here it is:

Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”

Mark 4:24-25

We need to LISTEN to HIM so we can gain more understanding so we can spread the seed and then pray that the seed will work it's way into people's hearts.

Jesus Crucified!

I'm in Matthew 27 & 28, in my Bible reading. As believers, we know the story of how our Savior was crucified for our sin, but we need to be reminded of what HE did for us. I'm reminded of "The Passion of the Christ" movie. It so vividly portrayed what happened to Jesus. My kids watched these clips with me this morning and they said they had never seen it. So guess what we are going to be doing this week. We'll be sitting down as a family and watching it!

Peter Has Always Got a Bad Rap!

Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows,

you will deny three times that you even know me.”

“No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you,

I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same.

Matthew 26:34-35

Matthew 26 was a part of my daily Bible reading today. This chapter was about the Last Supper and the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, and even Peter cutting off the ear of Malchus! John says that the man was Peter. (Jn. 18:10) There's alot to meditate on and discuss from this story, but I want to focus on Peter. I have heard alot of sermons (at least 1,560) and when discussing Peter, Pastors seem to focus on Peter denying Christ and true he did do that:

Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl

came over and said to him, “You were one of those with

Jesus the Galilean.”

But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what

you’re talking about,” he said.

Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to

those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath.

“I don’t even know the man,” he said.

A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said,

“You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”

Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!”

And immediately the rooster crowed.

Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the

rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

And he went away, weeping bitterly.

Matthew 26:69-75

And he cut off Malchus' ear to "defend" Jesus. I guess he was feeling brave standing right beside the Son of God.

For some reason, we like to focus on the negative. I guess it's because we're humans! So, out of all the sermons that I've heard, (yeah around 1,560) I only heard 1, yep only 1, that focused on the positive aspect of Peter. That sermon I heard was 20 years ago when I was in college at Baptist Bible College. The Pastor discussed this passage:

When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified.

In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said.

“Take courage. I am here!”

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to

you, walking on the water.”

“Yes, come,” Jesus said.

So Peter went over the side of the boat

and walked on the water toward Jesus.

But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was

terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.

Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You

have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”

Matthew 14:26-31

The Pastor said, "Peter, got out the boat!" A great thing happened that day, Peter took the first step towards Jesus. But when he took his eyes off of Jesus, look what happened. He became scared and started sinking. His faith was not sturdy.

Here's my 2 cents, folks: Get out of the boat! Are you gonna fail, and take your eyes off of Jesus? Sure ya are. Why? Because you're not perfect. Hey you might even deny Jesus, like Peter did! But just remember, HE is always in control and HE will never fail you! You might fail yourself, but HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN! NEVER!

SO....get out of the BOAT! In other words, do SOMETHING for Jesus! If you focus on HIM, he will give you those God moments or God opportunities to do something GREAT!
