David gives us two lessons about worship, leading worship (to be specific). This is an old episode, but as I'm in Austin, TX at the National Worship Leader Conference, I don't have the capability to pop out a new one. God bless!

Psalm 46

"There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells."

In this very poetic psalm, we see that in the midst of natural disasters, political unrest, wars, and divine judgement, God is with us. Perhaps the greatest act of worship is to be still and know that He is God and He is with us. We have no fear because God is with us. While the world around us rages, we can pause for a moment to be still and know God.

Back from vacation! Now that I'm home, it's back to the podcast, which means back to Psalms. This week, we'll look at Psalm 25, which should sound familiar to all you Third Day fans. David is obsessed with God, as is obvious when we read this psalm. Are we obsessed with God?

Devoted to Worship pt 3

At last, we're finally on the last week of studying Acts 2:42! We'll be returning to the Psalms shortly. This week, we look at the last of the four characteristics Luke says the early church was devoted to - prayer. Are we devoted to prayer? If we want to lead people into a deeper relationship with God through the act of worship, we need to have that deeper relationship ourselves. We do that by worshiping in private long before stepping on the platform on Sunday morning. Imagine if we all prayed just five minutes a day, everyday. What a difference that could make!

Devoted to Worship pt 2

This week we look at Communion. It seems sometimes like a stale old tradition, or, perhaps worse yet, a ritual. What does it mean? Why do we do it? Do we understand what we're doing when we participate? How does a cracker and juice affect my life?

Going back to Moses and the Passover meal, I attempt to explain the meaning and symbolism behind Communion. We also need to understand that Communion is not only a symbol, but also a covenant meal. Taking part in Communion means we are accepting the terms of the new covenant between God and people established by Jesus the night before He died. God's terms are powerfully communicated through the bread and wine. What are our terms?

I try to keep these as close to five minutes as possible . . . I overshot a little on this one. Sorry! I would love to hear your comments. Please e-mail me at andy@cbcspringfield.org. Thanks!

Devoted to Worship pt 1 (2nd release)

For some reason, we had a technical glitch and the last episode, "Devoted to Worship pt 1," pulled in the wrong audio file. So, I've resubmitted this episode. Enjoy!

Continuing to look at Acts 2:42 we see the early Christian church devoted (proskartereo) not only to the Word and to fellowship (koinonia), but also to Communion and prayer. Together, the Lord's Supper and prayer indicate that the early church was a worshiping church.

Luke shows us in verses 42-47 that the worship of the early Christians was balanced. They met both in the temple courts and in their homes. They had both unaffected joy and reverent awe. Worship should always be balanced, and part of our role as worship leaders is to maintain the balance in the worshiping life of our church.

Koinonia - Devoted to Fellowship

We're continuing our break from Psalms by studying Acts 2:42, a snapshot Luke gives us of the early church. This week, we look at koinonia, which is the Greek word Luke uses to describe the fellowship of the early believers. What he means is that no one lived in need. Those who had plenty gave freely to those who did not have enough.

While it is easy to talk about giving, it's not always easy to talk about asking. Do we ask for help when we need it? Often we don't because of pride. But true fellowship, or koinonia, is only gained when we abandon our foolish pride.

We have subscribers in Australia and Canada! For a small-town guy in the central U.S., that's kind of cool. If you're listening to this podcast, and you're not a part of Central Baptist Church in Springfield, IL, I'd love to know how you found it and what you think.
Proskartereo - Devoted to the Word

We're taking a short break from Psalms to jump over to Acts 2:42. Luke gives us a glimpse of a Spirit-filled church by describing four characteristics of the early church. They were devoted to (1) the teaching of the Word, (2) fellowship, (3) worship, and (4) prayer. We're going to look at each of these characteristics over the next four episodes.

Are you devoted to the teaching of the Word? You cannot separate God from His Word. If we truly desire to worship God, we must be devoted to the teaching of the Word.

Our words are very important. In Psalm 12, David contrasts the words of the wicked, which are arrogant, flattering, vain, lying, and deceitful, with the words of God, which are as flawless as silver refined seven times in a furnace. If we are to be like Him, our words must also be free from the dross of impure speech.
