Its always a matter a comparison. Who is doing good, and which is the better one. It applies the same to the many ‘woods we have, the nearest to us being TamilWood and Tollywood.

The tamil film industry is said to be blessed with visionary artists/directors/production units and musicians and they do take their respect. Tollywood lagged behind for a long time and is always in a never-ending loop to try and excel before the neighbors.

I would say our industry fared well  in bridging this gap last one and half year or so, and we the audience, always expecting and encouraging variety and freshness. Thanks to the many efforts went behind. Why not ! If Tollywood makes around 100 movies a year, each one of us watch at least 30 of them (a movie buff goes way far!)

I won’t go beyond last year or so to just list the good ones that I can think of, but it doesn’t mean we only started having good movies last year only.(Except for the first one below, rest are not ordered in any specific way. They are purely random )

The first obvious item of the list is Magadheera, “the Grand Movie of Tollywood”. SS Rajamouli is simply the best director around. You watch Veer (a disaster hindi movie), Invictus (english movie on Rugby) to compare the international standards that he tries to bring. I can keep writing on him and his work and comparing and more, in one line, he is one of the visionaries Tollywood is hungry of.

Arundhati is another movie which has high risked production. Sheer love towards cinema made this possible ! Thanks to the producer (ShyamPrasad Reddy)

Movies of Ravi Babu are always to be watched out for, though some times he fails to bring in good stuff. Yet, the experimenting and the freshness he takes us to is to be appreciated. (Amaravathi and Anasuya)

Sekhar Kammula and his school of movie making has already won accolades. Hope he keeps up and adds himself to the visionary directors. (Happy Days, Leader)

Krishh is one director whom I am very much confident about his ability to deliver superb content, though he just made one movie so far (Gamyam). This movie has profound impact on my life! I rate it the one of the all time best movies (though its little too much, still I stand to it)

I want to mention about the movie ‘Katha’, I don’t know what reviews might have written about this, but if you have not watched yet, just do that! It has got tremendous creative work gone into it. (They are the followers of the great Alfred Hitchcock)

Chandra Sekar yeleti’s Prayanam is to be mentioned for sure. (though I personally don’t adore this movie)

There are some low profile and other flop movies, which tried to get away from the routine movies we see almost every time. Though they were not successful, yet their effort is to be recognized. Kudos to them and all the very best. (Ride, Manorama, Kavya’s Diary and importantly Baanam)

Asta Chemma is an IIM styled movie, it got lots of new stuff while still maintaining the nativity. I like it to the core. Hope you all do feel the same!

Apart from the above special movies, I do still want to mention other good movies like Kick (though routine, it is still different in many respects), Ullasamga Utsahamga (pure and colorful movie devoid the hero!)  and Sukumar’s beautiful direction! Sukumar is one who again should go in the list of the visionaries. He got brains. Hope he does more and more good movies.

Other terrific directors like Gunasekhar, Puri Jagannath, Seenu Vaitla are good for us. We take pride in their identity !

Music direction is next. We want music. We want our music to be popular, we want it to be listened most. After all, its music !!!!

Mani Sharma is a genius at work with his variations, consistency and excellent sound engineering and re-recording. I watch (or rather, listen) movies for his sound tracks. The very demand for his music in Tamil movies, and in Bollywood recently (thanks to RGV!) proves his caliber. I simply love Mani. Go Mani.

Other than ‘direction’, the trend setting talented minds which totally stand out starts with Sri Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and Trivikram. They changed the scope of the telugu industry once for all, and they still continue to do that. Our most beloved respects to them.

One artist is very very special from the last one-two years. Suddenly, we started going to movies only to see him. As soon as he comes on the screen, the theater goes gala. He got a face which you can’t forget once you see!  You get stomach pain laughing and laughing. He turns the movies single handedly. The guiness book record holder, Padma Sri Brahmanandam (alias bramhi, movie comedian).

I definitely might have omitted some important names, please fill them up for me! and my apologies for my omission.

Hope… I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an Emperor – that’s not my business – I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.

We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls – has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in: machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little: More than machinery we need humanity; More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me I say “Do not despair”.

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress: the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people, will return to the people and so long as men die [now] liberty will never perish…

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written ” the kingdom of God is within man ” – not one man, nor a group of men – but in all men – in you, the people.

Then in the name of democracy let’s use that power – let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. How do we inspire ourselves to greatness when nothing else is ready to inspire? Where do we get the confidence from ?

The other day I was watching the Australian open final between Murray and Federer. Match is in the final set, Murray was down for almost 3/4 of the match, he is out of confidence and nothing is going his way. Who will inspire him then ? The crowd cheering is not helping either. His team, coach, mother (he doesn’t have a girl friend yet it seems !) all look more tensed than himself.
What he got is himself, just himself, he must exceed his own expectations !
He has to fight for his inspiration all alone. Come’on !!!! Come’on … he shouted.
The game progressed and he was able to get a winner out of his best shots (forehand). That shot brought him back on the track. He conquered his confidence ! “Allow yourself to expect more of yourself “.
(Though he lost the game to Federer, it was in the end, not because of loss of confidence but of competence )

How do we inspire everyone around us : lead by example.
How do we inspire a team ? For this, I found a very emphatic line from one of the superb movies I watched in the recent times – Invictus.

“His people wanted a leader. He gave them a champion”

The movie was based on how Nelson Mandela and his life (including the 27 year imprisonment) has inspired the captian of the South African Rugby Team to win the Rugby World Cup 1995 ! A real time inspiration !! Truly is.
Mandela also shares with the captian of the team that a poem, Invictus, had been inspiring to him during his time in prison, helping him to
“stand when all he wanted to do was lie down”.

I was unable to contain my turbulent mind after watching the movie, googled up the bacground and got this :
“Invictus” is a short poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). It was written in 1875 and first published in 1888[1] in Henley’s Book of Verses.

Invictus is the Latin for “Unconquered” !!
At the age of 12, Henley became a victim of tuberculosis of the bone. A few years later the disease progressed to his foot, and physicians announced that the only way to save his life was to amputate directly below the knee. In 1867 he successfully passed the Oxford local examination as a senior student. In 1875 he wrote the “Invictus” poem from a hospital bed. Despite his disability, he survived with one foot intact and led an active life until the age of 53.

The Western Electric company was giving its workers practically everything – the latest pension plans, sick and other benefits, recreational programmes, but still things were not going well. Somebody thought, office lighting had to something to do! The company engaged some research people to study the effect of lighting on production. The researchers selected two groups of operators. The first group was kept working under the old amount of light and the second group was given more light. With more light, output increased as expected. But surprisingly, the output of group first also went up! Group second was given less light to work while the output still went up and so did the other groups. Finally, they put two workers in a room without any light at all, working by sense of touch completely in the dark. Despite this handicap the workers kept up the increased output.

This was a puzzle!!!

Research workers experimented further, they isolated a study group of give women workers. For a year and a half, they checked the girl’s production under different conditions (its just work production! n nothing else ). The gilrs were given two five minutes’ rest periods, output went up. Two ten minutes’ rest periods, output went up still. Then 15 min and the girls were served a hot snack, the output was up again. The girls were let off half an hour earlier, still the output soared higher.  It remained on that high level when their weekly hours were cut from 48 to 40. As a test, the scientists restored the original conditions. The girls went back to time work, no rest periods no hot snack and 48 hrs a week, the result: output hit all time high.

A skilled statistician spent several years trying to relate variations in output with variations in physical circumstances of the five operators. The attempt to relate changes in physical conditions to variations in output resulted in not a single correlation of enough statistical significance to be recognized by any competent statistician as having any meaning. The investigators were forced to the conclusion that human situations are likely to be complex. The girls who were being experimented upon were not stones and they were unaware of the fact that they were being experimented upon. The attitude of the subject to the experiment is an important factor in determining the response to situation. The result led to the inevitable conclusion that whether or not a person is going to give his services whole heartedly to the group depends in good part on the way he feels about his job, his fellow-co workers and supervisors.

A new line of approach was therefore adopted. A few experimenters went in to the shops to talk to the workers and to get to know them. It was discovered that a person can talk about what is uppermost in the mind. Even the complaints were listened to carefully. Quite a few of the complaints were investigated and set right, but several times the experimenters did absolutely nothing about the object of the complaint, but, after the interview, curiously enough, the complaint disappered. They found that some people did not really want anything done about difficulties of which they are complaining.

“They just wanted an opportunity to talk about their troubles to a sympathetic listener. ”

This led to a further re-thinking on the subject. The notion of the economic man , man primarily motivated by economic interests was shaken. The conception of the worker was changed. The experiments indicated that the behavior of workers could not be understood apart from their feelings and sentiments. Secondly, it was found that sentiments were easily disguised. Thirdly, the manifestations of sentiments could not be understood as things in and by themselves, but only in terms of the total situation of person. (This doesn’t in any way be taken that i am not looking for a salary hike. Actually I’m desperate for it. Social situation isn’t it! )

Response to work, to a change depends on conditioning of the sentiments, the kind of human satisfaction he is deriving from his social participation with other workers and supervisors in the immediate work group of which he is a member and hence, the effect of the change on his customary interpersonal relations. The worker is not an isolated atomic individual. He is a member of a group. Within each of these groups, the individual has feelings and sentiments towards each other which bind them together in collaborative efforts. It was found that operating within this group were four basic sentiments: You should turn out too much work, if you are, you are a rate buster; you should not turn out too little work, if you are, you are a chiseller. You should not say anything to the supervisor which would react to the detriment of one of your associates. If you are,you are a squealer. You should not be too officious. If you are an inspector, you should not act like one. To be an accepted member of a group, a man has to act in accordance with these social standards.

The experiments further considered the possibility that differences in individual performances might be related to difference in abilities. They compared each workers’ relative rank in output with his relative rank in intelligence and dexterity as measured on certain tests. The results were interesting. The lowest producing in te room ranked first in intelligence and third in dexterity. The highest producing in the room was seventh in dexterity and lowest in intelligence. This did not seem to make sense.  The researchers thought there must be other factors which explained individual differences. They started studying the beliefs and creeds, their social codes and norms of behavior, the important social functions these groups perform , the history of these groups.

The important points these experiments summarized were: workers were not isolated and unrelated individuals. They are social animals and should be treated as such. It is further evident from the methods of handling them are still archaic. We must obtain a new understanding of human motivations and behavior in an organization. Each person is unique and brings to his job certain attitudes, benefits and ways of life as certain skills: technical, social and logical !

After seventy years of these experiments, the points still hold true. Perfectly true.

(Background information: Some studies were made in the Hawthorne plant, a manufacturing unit of the Western Electric Company at Chicago which itself was a part of the Bell telephone and Telegraph System with headquarters at Philadelphia, by a team from the Harward Business School under the leadership of Elton Mayo. What is the amount of bribes requested by people in India?

The above numbers clearly suggest that Bribery in India is at a grass root level with close 86% demands were done for $5000 or less (2,50,000 rupees or less, out which more than half were for $26 (Rs. 1300) or less.

Because, corruption takes place at such a grass root level, it is extremely difficult to contain it.

Having said that, 14 people out of 100 taking bribes are for amount more than $5000 (Rs. 2,50,000). Actually, if you look at the top officials are even more corrupt. I will tell you why I say that –

The number of big bosses is merely 1%-2% of all officials, yet according to the report 14% of bribes are of huge amounts, showing that big bosses are involved even more compared to low level officials who are taking bribes.

On a sidenote, China’s number is much higher with 24% of reported demands were for amounts between $5,001 and $50,000, 6% of reported demands were for amounts between $50,001 and $500,000, and 6% were
for amounts greater than $500,000. interesting…

• What is the nature of Bribe Demands in India?

No guesses here – if you want to get your work done, bribe em’ ! thats what is quite clear and in line with the notion we have.

More than half of all the bribes were paid to get the work in time !

77% of all reported bribe demands in India are related to the avoidance of
harm, including securing the timely delivery of a service – which is actually a right of a person (such as clearing customs or having a telephone line installed) and receiving payment for services already rendered

Only 12% of the bribe demands were for gaining a personal or business advantage (including exercising influence with or over another government official, receiving inappropriate favorable treatment or winning new business).

One thing for sure, we are now used to this corrupt system and take it in our stride as part & parcel. We do not want to go extra lengths and take the easy way out. But this easy way out is actually the roots of corruption in India.

• Who demand bribe in India?

No guesses here !

Whooping 91% of reported bribe demands originate from government officials in India.

The greatest sources of bribe demands, were from national level Government officials (33%), the police (30%), state/provincial officials and employees (16%), and city officials (10%) respectively .

Do you know which of the two Indian ministries ask for bribe more than other? – They are Customs office (13%) and Taxation and Water (9%).

China fares slightly well when it comes to Government officials taking bribe (85%) – Another major difference is that India Police (30%) are far more corrupt than their Chinese counterparts (only 11%).

• What is the frequency of Bribe Demands in India?

Nearly 90% indicated being solicited for a bribe between two and 20 times.

Overall 60% people reported bribe demands of 5 times or lower from the same individual. However, 9% asked for bribes more than 100 times.

Compared to China, it differs significantly with 73% people indicating that they had received multiple bribe requests. Almost 20% of those individuals reported receiving more than 100 bribe demands in China.

• In what form was the bribe requested?

If in doubt, give cash, as 92% of all bribes are preferred to be “cash or cash equivalent,” The next best thing is a “gift,” (5%) including requests for company products, jewelry and similar items. Less common still, at approx. 1% each, were requests for hospitality or entertainment items; travel for other than business purposes; and other assistance, such as
help with a visa, medical care, or scholarships.

Surprisingly, there were no reports in India of demands for “additional business” or “sexual favors.” In China, those demands accounted for a combined total of 7% of reported bribe solicitations.

This thinking came up to me when I sat down to see what all things happened in 2009 in my life. I was able to find some real good ‘highlights’ in my last year and overall I rate 2009 around 7/10. Pretty good rating huh ?! Apart from the highlights and few other very nice moments, I was with ‘unhealthy’ mind for some ‘valuable’ part of the year. Generally in our ‘overall’ ratings, this gets skipped.

When I look at the bad things that happened , I feel like changing. But there are somethings in this world that will never change !!
When I look at the good things that happened, I feel to have them this year, next year and everytime. But! Change it seems, is inherent in every system of the universe.
Contradicting myself, I ended up writing up my mind thinking it might help in making things clear. I don’t want to repeat the unhealthy time I had last year.

2010 is already 16 days old ! I missed giving a grand opening to the new year. Simply to speak, there is nothing much I did (literally nothing! and I don’t count office work as something I ‘did’) in the last two and half weeks. I am not talking of goals of life or productive work and anything like that. I am just talking of life and living life. And when we add goals, passions, ideals to this, definitely some time lost. The more we live, the more its getting deviated from what we want to do and what we end up doing.

When in the movie ‘3 idiots’ its shown that sometimes parents, education system or social conditions restrict in not allowing to do what we want in life,  We take it to be valid. But when we are totally out of all those and are ‘free’ to do anything, we are not faring any better!!!! Strange yet again!!!!

I donno how 2010 would turn out finally for me, but I want to not just spend my time, but earn my time while spending !  Unhealthy times are strictly prohibited.
I don’t mind not having a grand opening, but I do wish a good exit !

It sounds strange to ‘plan’ our life (life is not a insurance scheme to plan! ), but a year’s time can definitely be earned, if not planned.
Take life year by year. Make sure every year is filled with everything you want to see in your life. I am going to do that.
Fill it with friends, music, little work, little study, family, knowledge, wisdom, fun, love, cricket, 0 % sadness and 0% idleness.

Be passionate, run your life. Make 2010 a memorable number in your life. Give life a chance.
