India is undergoing rapid dietary transition. High economic growth has resulted in a burgeoning middle-class having greater access to commercially available foods, including fried and baked food items. Most of these foods contain high amounts of Trans Fatty Acids (TFAs), particularly if cooked in vanaspati (partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) which is often preferred for its low cost and longer shelf life. TFAs can adversely affect cholesterol levels, predispose the individual to diabetes, coronary heart disease and may also affect many of his body organs.

All food items prepared, baked or fried by using Vanaspati/Margarine contain TFA. These include: Cakes and Pastries; Patty, Rusk; Fried Aloo Chaat , AlooTikki (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Sweets (Mithai) (prepared in ‘Vanaspati’), Cookies / biscuits, French fries, Potato chips, Bhatura, Samosa, Parantha, etc.

Despite their harmful effect the reason why food manufacturers frequently use them because TFA containing oils can be preserved longer, they give the food the desired shape and texture and can easily substitute ‘Pure ghee’. Further, these are comparatively far lower in cost and thus add to profit/saving.

Avoiding the use of ready to use (instant) mixes for preparing foods as they have a greater chance of having Trans fats and checking the Nutrition Facts label on packaged food items for their TFA content if indicated.

If a label says “0” trans fat, it can still contain 0.5 grams trans fats per serving or less.

While some developing countries have laid down norms for TFA content of food, India has yet to pass/implement the regulation regarding the TFA containing fats or the TFA content of commercially prepared food items. Therefore, the responsibility lies with the consumers to safeguard their interest.

It’s easier said than followed. Most of us, including you and me are habituated the way it is not to be ! Food habits are the toughest to change !

Our food habits should be probably equated to bad habits of smoking and drinking !!!!

Make a change. Bring the difference. Be a healthy person than what you are today !

Tendulkar conferred with Honorary rank of Group Captain

Senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar was today conferred with the Indian Air Force’s honorary rank of Group Captain to honour his cricketing achievements and contribution to the nation. Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by IAF and the first personality with no aviation background to receive the honour. The 37-year-old Tendulkar was inducted into the Air Force as its brand ambassador with IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik doing the honours in a glittering ceremony at the Air Force auditorium in New Delhi.

“It’s a great pleasure and honour to be honoured by the IAF. It was wishful thinking and it has come true today.

“I’m extremely proud to be a part of IAF. I want to urge the youth to join air force and serve the nation. So dream, because dreams do come

true,” Tendulkar said after receiving the honour.

“The closest I’ve come to being an air warrior is wearing aviator glasses like fighter pilots… I was scared when I got into a fighter jet in South Africa in 1996, because there was not much room inside it,” said Group Captain Sachin Tendulkar, who was conferred the honorary rank by the chief of air staff, Air Chief Marshal PV Naik, in the presence of the marshal of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Arjan Singh.

Tendulkar, who became the first sportsperson to be conferred an honorary rank by the IAF, said, “I would like to bat twice, onc

e from both sides”, when asked whether he would like to captain the armed forces team or Team India, if there was a match between the two.

The cricketing icon will take a Sukhoi-30 fighter jet sortie in November in Pune, after which he

will receive his wings.

The batsman, who was fascinated by movies like Top Gun as a teenager, is the first national with no aviation background to be conferred with an honorary IAF rank, under the government’s policy of 1977 of granting honorary rank by the Indian armed forces to eminent personalities as recognition of their contribution towards the nation or the armed forces. The proposal was put up in January by the IAF, which was approved by president Pratibha Patil on June 23.

A CD was sent to Tendulkar a month prior to the function with images and a video of the IAF salute so that he could learn it for the felicitation ceremony.

GOOD TEACHING: THE TOP TEN REQUIREMENTS

One. Good teaching is as much about passion as it is about reason. It’s about not only motivating students to learn, but teaching them how to learn, and doing so in a manner that is relevant, meaningful, and memorable. It’s about caring for your craft, having a passion for it, and conveying that passion to everyone, most importantly to your students.

Two. Good teaching is about substance and treating students as consumers of knowledge. It’s about doing your best to keep on top of your field, reading sources, inside and outside of your areas of expertise, and being at the leading edge as often as possible. But knowledge is not confined to scholarly journals. Good teaching is also about bridging the gap between theory and practice. It’s about leaving the ivory tower and immersing oneself in the field, talking to, consulting with, and assisting practitioners, and liaisoning with their communities.

Three. Good teaching is about listening, questioning, being responsive, and remembering that each student and class is different. It’s about eliciting responses and developing the oral communication skills of the quiet students. It’s about pushing students to excel; at the same time, it’s about being human, respecting others, and being professional at all times.

Four. Good teaching is about not always having a fixed agenda and being rigid, but being flexible, fluid, experimenting, and having the confidence to react and adjust to changing circumstances. It’s about getting only 10 percent of what you wanted to do in a class done and still feeling good. It’s about deviating from the course syllabus or lecture schedule easily when there is more and better learning elsewhere. Good teaching is about the creative balance between being an authoritarian dictator on the one hand and a pushover on the other.

Five. Good teaching is also about style. Should good teaching be entertaining? You bet! Does this mean that it lacks in substance? Not a chance! Effective teaching is not about being locked with both hands glued to a podium or having your eyes fixated on a slide projector while you drone on. Good teachers work the room and every student in it. They realize that they are the conductors and the class is the orchestra. All students play different instruments and at varying proficiencies.

Six. This is very important — good teaching is about humor. It’s about being self-deprecating and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s often about making innocuous jokes, mostly at your own expense, so that the ice breaks and students learn in a more relaxed atmosphere where you, like them, are human with your own share of faults and shortcomings.

Seven. Good teaching is about caring, nurturing, and developing minds and talents. It’s about devoting time, often invisible, to every student. It’s also about the thankless hours of grading, designing or redesigning courses, and preparing materials to still further enhance instruction.

Eight. Good teaching is supported by strong and visionary leadership, and very tangible institutional support — resources, personnel, and funds. Good teaching is continually reinforced by an overarching vision that transcends the entire organization — from full professors to part-time instructors — and is reflected in what is said, but more importantly by what is done.

Nine. Good teaching is about mentoring between senior and junior faculty, teamwork, and being recognized and promoted by one’s peers. Effective teaching should also be rewarded, and poor teaching needs to be remediated through training and development programs.

Ten. At the end of the day, good teaching is about having fun, experiencing pleasure and intrinsic rewards … like locking eyes with a student in the back row and seeing the synapses and neurons connecting, thoughts being formed, the person becoming better, and a smile cracking across a face as learning all of a sudden happens. Good teachers practice their craft not for the money or because they have to, but because they truly enjoy it and because they want to. Good teachers couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Sustaining and Developing Independent India

All Indians,

Its again the mid-August, an august day in the history of our country, we, the present generation, salute the freedom that is given to us ! This freedom is absolute, enjoyable and as seen over the last 64 years, exploitable !

Without taking any side, either to feel proud and boast about the struggle that led to the attainment of freedom or to feel dissatisfied about the lost 60 years of independent and sovereign time, We intend to see what need to be done – Disciplined Optimism isn’t it !

At the institutional level of legislation and judiciary, let us remind of the greatest saying of the 13th century :

“To none we will sell, we will deny or delay, right or justice” – Magna Carta.

The judicial system in India should stand to support and safeguard the delivery of justice, especially to the downtrodden. Free legal aid, public interest and transparency and accountability should define judiciary. Criminal justice system has to be revamped to make the courts more approachable and trusted.

The decades long problems of Naxalism, Kashmir conflict and the resultant terrorism have been torturing the people through out the years. No singular solution or answer might solve these obnoxious issues, but going to the basic irrefutable concept of

“Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of Justice”

might show us the way to march ahead.

The regional aspirations, diversities and the divisions have gone past state boundaries and starving the national unity and integrity. The rules on the making and unmaking of states are not drawn in chambers of law. They are lessons inferred from the unfolding pages of history and the situation on the ground including effective control. To that extent, conflicts over sovereignty and self-determination are better resolved through multilateral ism and mutual respect.

With the economic development confined only to smaller sections of the society and not able to ‘include’ the rest of India, many ‘Bharat’s have started emerging, each trying to encroach its space snatched from one another. Energy and Food had to be ‘secured’. So is work and employment. The steps taken by the government in all these seems to be directed but not qualitatively intent !

Development has to reach the lower strata of the country. India as a nation will be built bringing together all these ‘Bharat’s into one single entity, being independent, we have the opportunity, freedom and sovereignty to secure a unified India (both geographically and socially). Commitment is what can bind and deliver.
No one should starve with empty stomachs. Every child should be able to get nutritious food, able to play and study and have a healthy childhood. Health of every individual should be protected. Environment has to be sustained.

India, a nation in the making for the last 64 years, need people with deepest commitment, honest souls that can see no difference between a rickshaw puller and a BMW owner, sincere to their heart, family and society and leaders who can influence with their high ethics and vision. I cherish to be one of them.

Let’s cherish and be ‘them’ who can see and pass on a democratic socialist secular republic India to our next generation.

At the stroke of the mid-night hour today, let us once again solemnly resolve, with more confidence and commitment than was shown by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in his Independence night speech, to take up the cause of India and its nation-making.
