Chess is not just about pushing pieces of wood across the board. It’s about owning your opponent’s mind and thoughts until they become your bitch.

Psychological warfare is what it is also about and that is the name of the game in the current world chess championship tussle watched by millions on the Internet between Vishy Anand, the holder and Indian superstar and his challenger Boris Gelfand, (pictured), chess’s version of a worried Jewish accountant.

Unfancied Boris rules the roost
But it’s the largely unfancied Boris who seems to be coming out on top after thirty years plus of chasing his dream.

He has shocked the pundits by not only holding the champion to level pegging at three draws each but in two of the games he had the initiative but just couldn’t finish his opponent off.

I thought at first this might be getting Boris down, he looked so glum, but then I realised this is his normal demeanour.

Blow by blow
Right now I reckon he is a happy chappy, he has Anand worried and today has the White pieces which usually gives a player the advantage.

The Wowster on a bionic eye which is powered by light

A retinal implant, or if you like a bionic eye, has been invented to bring hope to blind people.

Until now such devices have been powered by battery but California’s Standford University’s invention is powered by light using a special pair of glasses to beam near infrared light into the eye.

Age related diseases
It could help a patient  see who is suffering from such age related diseases as magno macular degeneration and retinal pigmentosa which can lead to blindness.

The wiring of the implants stimulate the nerves in the back of the eye. Early results of a trial in the UK have helped two men from being totally blind to being able to perceive light and shapes.

Electrical signal to the nerves
The implant is fitted in the back of the eye. The glasses with a video camera records what is happening before a patient’t eyes  and fires beams of near infra red light which creates an electrical signal which is passed on to the nerves.

The implant has not been tested on people but has been shown to work in rats.

All in all new hope for blind people.

The Wowster on how Manchester City duly became the Premier City but not without a heart stopping encounter.

Soccer, as they say, can be a funny old game. And it certainly was when Manchester City won the coveted English Premier league from neighbours and arch rivals Manchester United.

But not without a heart stopping game where they looked as if they were about to be vanquished by lowly Queens Park Rangers. With minutes to go they were trailing 2-1 and United winning 1-0 seemed set to snatch the title against the odds.

But City’s class and determination shone through and they ran out 3-2 winners.

Hard team to topple
They thoroughly deserved to win the league, even that eternal grouch Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United,  had to graciously, well graciously for him, concede defeat to the better team in what must be now known as the premier city.

We will be back, he promised. I think that may well be difficult, City with its phenomenal wealth will be a hard team to topple.

Meanwhile the City fans paraded their joy in the UK’s premier city after 40 years of chasing the glittering prize without success.

No one could grudge them their success, that is apart from half the city.

The Wowster’s worry about being in Doc Marten shoes.

In Glasgow when it rains it really pisses down monsoon fashion. Already I have gone through two pairs of shoes in less than six months.

So off to a shoe shop to stock up, asked for a pair of shoes that could contend with the rain and the young assistant showed me a pair of Doc Marten shoes. Wondered about that, great shoes, ideal, but its been a while since I’ve possessed a pair of Doc Martens, still to hell with it, made the purchase and went out into the eye of the storm.

In terms of comfort and a dry haven, the shoes were brilliant. Also they looked good, not a small consideration for a man whose vanity stretches as he gets older.

Above my station
Then I noticed it, the shoes made my size 11 feet look enormous. Fuck, I thought, that’s not good. It’s all I need.

My immediate thought was that they would be a babe magnet and would give woman thoughts above my station, if you get what I mean.

I did get a few glances at my new Doc Marten shoesand hurried on. I suppose if push comes to shag and I don’t perform to expectation, I can always blame it on Doc Marten dysfunction.

The Wowster on a government minister up to his neck in the Murdoch brown stuff.

It just keeps on coming as a government keeps on drowning in the brown stuff.

Or to put it more precisely, Jeremy Hunt, the UK Culture Secretary who sought the advice of a woman accused on Murdoch abetted corruption.

Pants on Fire
Jeremy Hunt has been caught with his pants down, not a pretty sight, having emailed for advice from News Corp, Murdoch’s media mafia, for advice on how to deal with phone hacking of which the self same corporation is accused of.

The email was sent to the corrupt Rebekah Brooks, former Managing Editor who is facing serious jail time for her part in the phone scandal.

At the same time, David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has been caught out sending lol type emails and messages of sympathy to Brooks over her plight in what ranks as the most serious corruption scandal in modern British political history.

Prevent a public inquiry
Jeremy Hunt in keeping with a government which lies through its teeth describes the email as inaccurate.

The email said that Hunt would play down the influence of the phone hacking on the government’s on the company’s bid for full control of BSkyB. He added that he wanted to “prevent a public inquiry.”

The liar will go, hopefully to jail, then its the turn of his boss who should also be put away for the corrupt liar he is.

I forecast this would happen when the scandal first broke (click here) and it’s coming true, surely there is simply no way out?
