The kick-off to it all is Thanksgiving weekend with The Tunnels and Neon Indian, fresh off his Fun Fun Fun Fest performance.

Neon Indian’s Psychic Chasms has garnered praise from all over, and his live show has blossomed into one of the most notable on the tour circuit. His other outfit, Vega, is also still in full effect, keeping Texas-raised Alan Palomo and his visual affects artist Alicia Scardetta busy. The nostalgic indie pop mixed with fuzzed-out psychedelics fuse effortlessly throughout the record, and we just know that the intimate stage at Stubb’s indoors will be a perfect showcase for the visual and aural experience of Neon Indian.

The Tunnels just released a 7″ on Austin’s Super Secret Records and will be featured on an upcoming episode of Local Lixx Austin. Their blend of psych-daze music is a perfect compliment to Palomo’s hazy sounds.

RSVP to our Facebook event for a chance to win free tickets to the show. We’ll contact a winner on November 25.

Know Better Learn Faster is the well-crafted sophomore effort produced by Tucker Martine for Thao With The Get Down Stay Down. More so than We Brave Bee Stings And All, this new record captures the energy of the trio’s live performances which are fast, frequent, and fun.

When they stopped in to our new Austin studio for their second Lounge Act performance, the band was recovering from van troubles and on the tail end of a fairly length stretch of dates.

Even with a hectic schedule that found them performing three times in one day, the band treated us to a phenomenal set that includes four songs off the new album.

From now through the New Year, we’re pleased to offer up the WOXY HOLIDAY MIXER! This special collection features hundreds of seasonal tunes and is filled with unique renditions of your holiday favorites by modern rockers from around the globe. We have a little bit of something for everyone. You’ll hear modern rock faves like Sufjan Stevens, Belle and Sebastian, My Morning Jacket, The Flaming Lips, and Yo La Tengo heavily featured in the music mix along with some things you might not expect (like tracks from “A John Waters Christmas”, Pee Wee Herman, or Spinal Tap).

To balance out all the modern rock tunes, we have a nice mix of classic tracks from artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and James Brown. You’ll also hear some of these truly vintage artists get a more contemporary spin off of compilations like the new “Verve Remixed Christmas” CD. To round things out a little more, we’ve also included some tunes about winter, snow falling, and the month of December, mainly because we know you can only hear “Jingle Bells” so many times…

A lot of the tracks we selected are out-of-print or hard to find and we had a lot of fun rounding them all up for you. We hope you enjoy the WOXY Holiday Mixer, and all of us at WOXY wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Clint Conley, Peter Prescott, and Roger Miller formed the core of one of America’s most influential post-punk bands in the late 1970’s, coming to a halt in 1983 due to Miller’s worsening tinnitus. Their “Academy Fight Song” and “That’s When I Reach For My Revolver” have to be included among any list of songs that define the early stages of ‘indie’ or ‘alternative’ music.

After an unexpected reunion, merely for a couple shows in 2002, few would have anticipated that the gigs would spawn a full-fledged comeback. Now seven years later, their three post-reunion full-lengths exceeding their initial output, Burma has rightly been lauded as pioneers of a particularly American brand of punk rock, appearing at the All Tomorrow Parties Festival and performing their Vs. album in its entirety at the Pitchfork Festival.

A different festival, the Fun Fun Fun Fest, brought them to town, with their Lounge Act just the second held in our new studio. Opening with two songs from their latest, The Sound The Speed The Light, they followed that with a “Devotion”, a song that’s been ‘in development’ for nearly 25 years as they explained to Mike. They finished with a cover of The Yardbirds’ “Happenings Ten Years Time Ago” that we cannot legally include in the podcast but listen for us to spin it on-air, because it’s a scorcher.

If the interview sounds a little rushed, well, it was. The band chose to play their set in full before gathering for the interview. However, like any music fan would, they were eager to see one of their favorite bands, the reunited Jesus Lizard, at Fun Fest and were keenly aware they were cutting it close. In all, a blistering session from a pioneering band who’ve lost none of the vigor and intensity that made them special in the first place.

He performed in Scottsdale, Seattle, Fort Worth, and then played the last two nights of the tour at the historic Paramount Theatre here in Austin, Texas. I have seen Rufus live several times over the years, but last night’s show (the second of his Austin gigs) was undoubtedly the most intimate.

Keeping in line with his upcoming record (revealed during the show to be All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, coming in March 2010), the show was predominately just Rufus and a piano. On a handful of songs, like crowd pleaser “California”, he played on acoustic guitar. In fact, he joked that “Dad would be so proud” when he tuned the guitar on stage at one point instead of calling for his tech, saying that you have to be serious about your guitar when you are in Austin!

The set list was eclectic, mixing fan favorites with some deep album tracks and even 4 brand new songs. One of those, an ode to his sister entitled “Martha”, was played live for the first time to an enthusiastic response by the audience. My favorite of the new songs was called “What Would I Do With A Rose”. He mentioned that the new album would be all piano & voice, with more complicated piano work than his usual fare. The show, like every performance of his that I have attended, was fun and felt incredibly spontaneous (even though a quick search of the internet shows that the set lists were remarkably similar between the two evenings). If he messed up a lyric or line, he simply laughed it off and started again.

The encore had two of the evening’s greatest moments. Upon returning to the stage, Rufus sat down at the piano and said “This song is dedicated to everyone fighting for marriage equality.” He then launched into “Going To A Town”, a song that was written in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but also touches on the frustrations that all LGBT people have against the Religious Right (”Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved?”).

Rufus was then joined onstage by Joan Wasser, who had performed as the opening act under her stage name of Joan As Police Woman. They performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” as a duet, a choice made all the more poignant by the fact that Joan was Jeff Buckley’s girlfriend at the time of his death in 1997. It was just one of many remarkable moments in a show that was tailor made for the hardcore fans in the audience.

To get an idea of what you’re missing, buy the Milwaukee at Last! DVD online.

Last year, we invited Knoxville’s Royal Bangs in for a performance at our Cincinnati studio after we heard their album We Breed Champions. When they came through Texas in early September, we were not quite ready for them to play in the new digs and, instead, they co-hosted a great guest DJ hour with Joe. Over Fun Fun Fun Fest weekend, they made history as the first band to perform for us in our new home on South Congress Avenue.

Earlier this fall, they released Let It Beep on Patrick Carney’s Audio Eagle Records. As much as we dug their first album, this time around the band sound bigger with more layers to their instrumentation and the catchiest songs we’ve heard in a long time.

In this performance, they inaugurate the Austin Lounge with four tracks from Let It Beep and talk about their first live dates across the pond which are happening here in late November and early December.

One of the things we love bringing you the most here at WOXY is our Lounge Acts series. So it’s been one of the more difficult things during our move to Austin, Texas to have some time away from music in the lounge. Well, we are happy to announce that all is finally changing starting this week.

Thats right, Lounge Acts return this week on WOXY.com and we have a really nice slate of performances already set up for you. First up tomorrow is a session with Tennessee’s Royal Bangs followed by legendary rockers Mission Of Burma on Wednesday.

Then, to finish out the week, we have Thao with The Get Down Stay Down on Thursday and Elvis Perkins in Dearland on Friday. How’s that for a comeback? We hope you are as excited as we are and will tune in for our first set of sessions from our new home here in Austin. See the schedule below.

Tues Nov 17 Royal Bangs 3:30p ET / 2:30p CT
Weds Nov 18 Mission Of Burma 12:30p ET / 11:30a CT
Thurs Nov 19 Thao with the Get Down Stay Down	2p ET / 1p CT
This time around, WOXY and our friends from Austinist are proud to be presenting The Mountain Goats and Final Fantasy at Antones on November 18th. In addition to having The New Yorker magazine refer to him as “America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist”, John Darnielle has released another critically acclaimed album this year titled The Life Of The World To Come that is already popping up on several “best of” lists as we round out 2009.

Final Fantasy is the moniker that Owen Pallet uses to release his solo work. Owen has released two album and has plans for a new one that is slated for release in early 2010. In addition to his work as Final Fantasy, Owen is also well known for his instrumental contributions and string arrangements for bands like Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Beirut and even The Pet Shop Boys. Most recently, Pallet played violin on the latest Mountain Goats album, part of the reason behind this tour pairing.

If you are a fan of one or both bands, or just want to get out and see some great live music, send us an email to enter our contest to win tickets. Title your email, “Mountain Goats” and send it to woxycontests at gmail dot com. The show is Wednesday November 18th and we will be accepting entries until the day before the show. However, this show could easily sell out, so if you would prefer to buy some tickets, you can do so now right here.

So good luck and even if you are not a winner, we hope to see you out at the show!
