Your discussion threads are likely packed with helpful follow-up questions, clever workarounds, personal stories, and brilliant solutions suggested by your readers. That community knowledge is incredibly valuable.

The problem? WordPress doesn’t include any of that content in its search results. That means visitors searching your site right now are missing out on information that already exists on your pages.

I’ve run into this exact issue on several of my own sites. I would read through a long, incredibly detailed conversation in my comment section, only to realize those insights would never appear in a single search query. 

Fortunately, there’s a straightforward fix. By the end of this guide, you’ll know how to make your comments fully searchable so visitors can easily discover the answers your community has already written. Best of all, you won’t need to write a single line of code.  

Why I Make Blog Comments Searchable on My WordPress Sites

When you’re busy managing a WordPress blog or website, it’s easy to focus purely on your main blog posts and pages. However, some of the best insights may be happening right below your articles – in the comment section!

Adding comments to your search index is one of those small changes that can add a ton of value from your audience. With that said, here’s why I recommend making blog comments searchable in WordPress:

• Make Your Readers’ Real-World Experiences Searchable: A lot of the most practical, high-value content on a blog doesn’t actually live inside the main post. Instead, it’s buried deep within the follow-up questions your readers ask, and the brilliant, real-life tips that other community members share in the replies. Indexing your comments means a visitor searching for a specific personal recommendation, a unique suggestion, or a quick tip can find the exact thread where someone already talked about it. 
• Encourage Readers to Stay and Explore: When your search bar actually helps people find what they’re looking for, they’ll happily click through. And when that page includes a lively conversation from other readers, they’ll stick around even longer to read through it all. I’ve seen people spend much more time on blogs simply because they found an interesting comment thread. Over time, this sends strong user engagement signals to the search engines, which can have a positive impact on your search engine rankings. 
• Help Returning Visitors Rejoin Conversations: Your most loyal readers will often try to track down a specific comment they previously wrote or a helpful reply they got from another user. Without indexed comments, it’s almost impossible for them to find those old threads. By making your comments searchable, you can help visitors jump right back into the discussions they care about the most.
• Answer the Little Questions That Pop Up Every Day: If you’re running a helpful blog, readers will naturally ask a lot of practical questions in the comments. For example, the core recipe may be in the main post, but the answer to a question like ‘can i use almond milk instead?’ is almost always tucked away in the comments. Making that text searchable ensures readers can find those answers without having to scroll through dozens of different pages. 

Essentially, making your comments searchable is a great way to show your audience that you value their input and their engagement. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of finding information on your site, and it turns your comment section into a truly useful resource instead of just an archive of old feedback. 

With that said, let’s see how you can quickly and easily make comments searchable on your WordPress website. 

Step 1: Install and Activate SearchWP

Whenever I need to improve WordPress search, the first tool I reach for is SearchWP. I’ve tested several WordPress search plugins over the years, but SearchWP consistently gives me the most control over what gets indexed and how results are ranked.

Unlike heavy search plugins that slow down your server, SearchWP creates a dedicated, lightweight index table. This keeps your site running fast even when visitors are searching through thousands of long comment threads.

Beyond comments, SearchWP can also pull results from PDF documents, taxonomy terms, WooCommerce product data, custom post types, and image metadata like alt text and captions. You can also control how each piece of content is weighed, and where the results appear on your WordPress website. 

It essentially turns the basic WordPress search into a fully customizable search engine.

To get started, head over to the SearchWP website and choose the plan that best fits your project. After purchasing the plugin, download the ZIP file so you can install and activate it just like any other plugin.

Once the plugin is active, go to SearchWP » Settings in your WordPress dashboard and click the ‘General’ tab.

After that, paste your license key into the ‘License Key’ field. You can find this information by logging into your account on the SearchWP website. It’s also in the confirmation email you received when you purchased SearchWP.

After entering the key, click the ‘Verify Key’ button to activate your license.

Step 2: Add Comments as a Source to Your Search Engine

Now comes the part that makes SearchWP incredibly powerful. Instead of relying on the default WordPress search, you can build a custom algorithm that controls exactly what content gets searched and how important each piece of data is in the final results.

To do this, go to SearchWP » Algorithm in your dashboard.

You’ll see the page divided into distinct sections for each active content type on your site. 

By default, all WordPress websites will have the Posts, Pages, and Media content types. However, you may see extra sections if you’re running an e-commerce store with WooCommerce, or you’ve created custom post types for things like portfolios or testimonials.

Here, click the ‘Sources & Settings’ button. 

A popup window will appear listing every available content source that SearchWP can index on your site. 

Inside this popup, find and check the box next to ‘Comments.’ Once checked, click the ‘Done’ button at the bottom.

Now, if you scroll down you’ll see a brand-new ‘Comments’ section. 

This is a good start, but there’s a few extra steps I recommend to ensure visitors can find exactly what they’re looking for in your comments threads.

Step 3: Choose Which Comment Attributes to Index

A typical WordPress comment is made up of multiple pieces of data, including the author’s name, their email address, and the actual text itself.

Because of this, you need to tell SearchWP exactly which parts of the comment it should search, and which parts it can safely ignore.

Within the new ‘Comments’ section, click the ‘Add/Remove Attributes’ button. 

This opens a new popup menu where you can toggle your comment attributes:

• Comment Text: This is the actual body of the comment, which are the precise words your reader typed out. I always check this box, since it’s the entire reason we’re setting up SearchWP in the first place! Without making the core comment content searchable, indexing comments accomplishes very little.
• Author Name: This attribute lets visitors search for all the comments left by a specific community member. I really only activate this on community-focused sites, membership sites, or forums where visitors might actively follow specific contributors. On a standard blog with mostly casual or anonymous readers, this attribute adds very little real value.
• Author Email: This indexes the private email address attached to each comment. I never enable this on public-facing websites, since private email addresses aren’t useful search terms for everyday visitors.

After making your selections, click the ‘Done’ button to close the popup. 

Step 4: Set the Relevance Weight for Comment Attributes

At this point, all the attributes you selected will appear within the main ‘Comments’ section.

You’ll notice that each attribute has its own ‘Applicable Attribute Relevance’ slider. This slider controls how heavily SearchWP weights that specific piece of data when calculating the final search ranking scores.

To give an attribute more influence, drag its slider to the right. Alternatively, drag it to the left to make that attribute less important relative to the other content attributes.

When fine-tuning these sliders, keep in mind that your editorial content should almost always carry more weight than user-generated comments. This means you’ll usually want to prioritize things like your post titles, URL slugs, and main body text.

For that reason, it’s usually best practice to move the Comment Text slider into the center. This gives your comments enough weight to appear in relevant search results, without overpowering a direct match found in a post’s title. 

If you chose to index the ‘Author Name,’ then keep the slider to the left. You don’t want a random commenter’s name dominating the search results unless a visitor is explicitly searching for that exact person.

Don’t worry about getting these settings perfect straight away. You can return to this dashboard and adjust the sliders at any time.

SearchWP also has built-in analytics. Once your new search engine has been live for a few weeks, you can review which terms visitors are typing in and which terms are returning ‘No Results.’ You can then use this insight to fine-tune the relevance sliders, and continuously improve your site’s search experience.

Step 5: Save and Rebuild Your Search Index

Once you’re happy with how your new search algorithm is configured, it’s time to save your settings so SearchWP can rebuild its index. This is the point where comments actually become searchable, so don’t skip it.

To get started, click the ‘Save’ button. 

At this point, SearchWP will detect that you’ve added a new source and show the following notification: ‘This index needs to be rebuilt.’ A ‘Rebuild Index’ button will appear alongside the message.

You can now go ahead and click the ‘Rebuild Index’ button.

This triggers a background process where SearchWP scans every single published comment across your WordPress database and adds it to an index. You’ll see a progress bar that updates as the rebuild runs.

Depending on the size of your site, this process can take anywhere from a few seconds on a smaller blog to several minutes on massive community sites boasting tens of thousands of comments. 

The good news is that SearchWP runs this process in the background, so you can continue working on other areas of your site without interrupting the process. As soon as the status bar hits 100%, your site’s comments will start appearing in relevant search results.

Pro Tip: If you type a known comment keyword into your search bar and get a ‘No Results Found’ page, don’t panic.

If you’re using a caching plugin (like WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, or SG Optimizer) or server-level caching from your web host, your old search results page might still be stored in your server’s memory. 

Simply clear your site cache, open your browser in an Incognito window, and enter the same search term again. It should work perfectly. 

Step 6: Create a Dedicated ‘Comments-Only’ Search Box

Does your WordPress theme already feature a built-in search bar? If so, it’ll now automatically use SearchWP’s Default engine behind the scenes. This means your current search bar will instantly start including comments in its results without you having to do any extra work.

However, SearchWP also lets you build custom search forms and add them to any page or post using a ready-made block. Best of all, you choose exactly what content it includes.

Want a search bar that only looks through your site’s comments? You can set that up in just a few clicks. This is incredibly useful if you want to create a dedicated ‘Community Search’ bar that ignores everything apart from your site’s comments. 

If you want to build a custom search form, go to SearchWP » Search Forms. From there, click the Add New button at the top of the page.

By default, SearchWP gives your form a generic placeholder name like ‘Search Form 1.’ I recommend replacing this with a distinct, custom name so you can identify the form easily in your dashboard.

To do this, click the pencil ‘Edit’ icon that appears next to the generic, default title.

You can now type in the title you want to use instead. This title is just for your own internal reference, so I usually go with something descriptive like ‘Comments-Only Search.’

Next, scroll to the pre-designed layouts. These control how your search form looks and acts.

The Basic layout gives you a clean keyword input box paired with a standard ‘Submit’ button. This is the classic configuration I tend to use most often. However, feel free to choose any layout you want. 

After picking your layout, scroll to the ‘Engine’ dropdown menu. This is where you choose which engine this form should use.

Since we configured the Default engine earlier, make sure you select ‘Default’ from this dropdown.

Right below that, open the ‘Results Page’ dropdown and choose ‘SearchWP.’

This tells the form to send visitors to SearchWP’s optimized results page, rather than using the default WordPress template. 

If you want to limit this specific search bar to reader discussions, open the ‘Type of search’ dropdown menu. You can then choose ‘Comments’ from the list. 

If you want to search all your site’s content (such as posts, pages, and comments), then simply leave the ‘Type of search’ field empty.

There are more settings you can explore, but this is all you need to create a working search form. When you’re happy with how the form is configured, click the ‘Save’ button at the top of the page. 

With that done, you can add the form to any page or post using the SearchWP Form block. 

Simply open the page or post where you want to display the search form, and click the ‘+’ icon. You can now start typing in ‘SearchWP Form,’ and then select the right block when it appears.

With that done, open the dropdown menu and select the form we created earlier.

WordPress will now display this form directly inside the block editor. 

When you’re happy with how everything looks, go ahead and publish or update the page as normal. 

Tracking What Your Visitors Search For in Your Comments

In my opinion, one of SearchWP’s most underrated features is its built-in search analytics. Monitoring your site’s search trends reveals exactly what they’re looking for, what community discussions they’re trying to track down, and where your existing content might be leaving questions unanswered.

To review this data, go to SearchWP » Statistics in your WordPress dashboard.

You can filter the data to look at search queries from the past 30 days, the last year, or the entire history of your website. 

I make it a habit to review these statistics regularly because it’s the best way to catch search performance issues or spot content gaps I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.

For example, imagine you notice that visitors keep searching for a specific term, but it’s currently returning a ‘No Results Found’ page.

If the content already exists on your site, this is a clear sign you need to fine-tune the SearchWP algorithm. To do this, head back to SearchWP » Algorithm and adjust the Applicable Relevance sliders. For example, if this content already exists in a comment, then you might move the Comment Text slider to the right, to give it more weight. 

Alternatively, if the content doesn’t exist on your site then it’s time to create it! 

Your audience is explicitly telling you what they want to read. You can use this search term as inspiration for a brand-new blog post, a new page in your knowledge base, or you might even pin a dedicated discussion thread to address thos topic head-on. 

Frequently Asked Questions About Searchable WordPress Comments

If you’ve ever struggled to make the default WordPress search work for your site, you’re not alone! To save you some troubleshooting time, I’ve collcected all the most common questions I get from WordPress users.

What are the benefits of making blog comments searchable?

The biggest benefit is that you’ll finally get the full value from the helpful discussions already happening on your site. Comments are often where readers ask highly practical, real-world follow-up questions, and where you or other community members post the solutions.

By indexing those conversions, a visitor searching for a specific problem can land on the exact discussion thread that solves it, rather than getting ‘No Results Found’ and abandoning your site. 

I’ve also noticed that when visitors can search through your comments, they tend to stick around for longer. This is because people genuinely enjoy reading through real conversations and friendly interactions surrounding a topic, rather than just reading your main article and then clicking away. 

This sends positive signals to the search engines which can improve your search rankings over time, especially when you combine searchable comment sections with a solid WordPress SEO plugin like AIOSEO.

Can I customize which parts of a comment get indexed?

Yes, and you should. SearchWP lets you toggle three comment attributes individually: the comment text, the author’s name, and the author’s email. 

I always index the comment text, and I’ll occasionally index the author’s name on community-focused sites. However, I almost never index email addresses, and I strongly advise against it.

Each attribute also gets its own relevance slider, so you can change their weight manually. If you decide your comment text should be the strongest signal, then drag its slider to the right.

Why aren’t my comments showing up in search results yet?

In my experience, this usually means you forgot to rebuild the index. 

SearchWP needs to scan all your site’s comments and add them to its index before they appear in the search results, and that scan only runs when you trigger it. 

To fix this, go back to SearchWP » Algorithm and click the ‘Rebuild Index’ button. Once the rebuild is complete, comments will start appearing in relevant search results. 

If comments still aren’t showing up, then double-check that ‘Comments’ is actually added to the default engine, and that the Comment Text relevance slider isn’t on the lowest setting. 

Will indexing comments slow down my WordPress site?

In almost every case, no. SearchWP builds and updates the index in the background, so the indexing process itself doesn’t affect the visitor experience.

In addition, the search queries themselves are typically faster than the standard WordPress search, because SearchWP uses its own optimized index instead of running a fresh database scan on every query.

However, SearchWP might affect your site’s performance in very extreme situations, such as a site that has tens of thousands of comments and very limited hosting resources. In those cases, the initial index rebuild can take a significant amount of time, but you only need to do this once. 

After that, SearchWP will update the index incrementally as new comments are added, which won’t affect the user experience. 

Is there a free way to make comments searchable in WordPress?

In my opinion, there isn’t a strong free option that gives you the same level of control, so SearchWP is still my top recommendation.

However, there are a few alternatives worth knowing about: 

• Relevanssi: This free search plugin lets you index comments. It’s less polished than SearchWP, but it’s a reasonable starting point if you’re working with a very limited budget. 
• Custom code: It’s technically possible to extend the default WordPress search using a custom filter. I typically don’t recommend this approach for most site owners because it can get quite complex. However, if you’re comfortable working with code and want to explore this route, then a plugin like WPCode lets you add custom snippets safely.

The fastest options in my test all share these exact traits. They have a small base footprint, defer non-critical scripts, and avoid trying to do everything at once during the initial page load.

Going further, I’ve found that page weight, HTTP request count, and CSS file size are the three biggest factors that can influence the theme’s speed. A theme with an ultra-light 28KB base footprint like Neve will almost always outperform a theme with a bulky 200KB base footprint, no matter how powerful your WordPress hosting is. 

That’s exactly why choosing a fast, optimized WooCommerce theme is so important when it comes to running a successful online store.

Does the GTmetrix Performance score actually matter for my store?

Yes, because your GTmetrix Performance score is calculated using the exact same Lighthouse engine that Google relies on to judge Core Web Vitals. This means a high Performance score strongly indicates that your store will rank better in Google search, load faster for shoppers, and convert more mobile users into paying customers. 

That said, the Performance score isn’t the whole story.

A theme that scores a perfect 90% on a clean test site can easily slow to a crawl once you start adding plugins, high-res product photos, and tracking scripts from tools like Google Analytics. The truth is, the speed scores you see in a theme developer’s marketing represent the absolute best-case scenario under perfect conditions.

Since your real-world scores will almost always be lower, it’s incredibly important to start with the fastest possible theme for your online store.

Are free WooCommerce themes fast enough for serious stores?

Yes, absolutely. Storefront, Neve, OceanWP, Botiga, and Sydney all have free versions that score an A in GTmetrix. 

However, typically free themes don’t include the more advanced, conversion-focused features like multi-step checkouts, mini carts, or product recommendations. 

If you’re launching a new store and want to keep your upfront costs low, I’d recommend starting with the free version of a theme like Botiga. Then, you can easily upgrade to a premium plan once your store starts generating steady revenue.

What is LCP and why does my store need to hit 1.5 seconds?

LCP stands for Largest Contentful Paint. In simple terms, it measures how long it takes for the main visual part of your page (like a large product photo or banner) to fully appear on the shopper’s screen.

Google considers an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less as ‘good’ for Core Web Vitals, while anything over 4 seconds gets flagged as ‘poor.’

With that in mind, you may be wondering why I recommend aiming for 1.5 seconds. Typically, this is the point where a page genuinely feels instant to a shopper, rather than just acceptable.

Yes, most online stores can benefit from a caching plugin.

In your WordPress dashboard, head over to SeedProd » Landing Pages. This screen acts as your central hub, where you can create, edit, organize, or duplicate every landing page on your site.

At the top of the dashboard, you’ll notice four distinct cards: Coming Soon Mode, Maintenance Mode, Login Page, and 404 Page.

Since we’re creating a standard landing page, find the ‘Add New Landing Page’ button and give it a click. 

Step 3: Name Your Page and Set the URL

Next, you’ll need to name your landing page and set its URL slug before picking a design. 

In the ‘Page Name’ field, type a descriptive name.  This is just for your own reference inside the WordPress dashboard, so choose something that will help you recognize the page later.

I recommend using something that clearly states the page’s purpose, such as ‘Free Email Course Signup’ or ‘Spring Sale Landing Page.’

The Page URL field defines the exact web address people will visit to view your page. If you leave this blank, SeedProd will automatically generate a slug based on whatever you typed into the Page Name field.

I’ve found that shorter URLs look much cleaner and perform significantly better in social media posts, newsletters, and paid ads. Because of that, I always recommend using a concise, keyword-focused slug like ‘free-course’ or ‘spring-sale.’

After filling in both fields, click the ‘Next: Choose Template’ button.

Step 4: Choose a Landing Page Template

After clicking the button, SeedProd takes you directly to its template gallery. The platform organizes its designs by landing page type, making it easy to find a layout that matches your exact business goal.

Along the top of the gallery, you’ll see tabs for each distinct template category:

• Coming Soon: A branded placeholder for a site that isn’t ready to launch yet. You can use these pages to collect email addresses and build buzz before your site even goes live. If you want a deeper dive, check out our roundup of the best WordPress coming soon and maintenance mode plugins.
• Maintenance Mode: This lets visitors know that your site is undergoing temporary maintenance, without showing them the work in progress.
• 404 Page: A custom ‘page not found’ layout that turns a frustrating visitor experience into a win. Instead of letting users leave when they click a broken link, you can use this space to guide them back to your best content and products.
• Sales: A long-form page designed to walk visitors through the features, benefits, testimonials, and pricing of a specific product or service. I use these templates every time I launch a premium digital product.
• Webinar: A registration page for a live or recorded video event. These layouts include dedicated space for the date, time, presenter bios, and key learning takeaways.
• Lead Squeeze: A short page focused on collecting an email address in exchange for a lead magnet, like a free guide or checklist. It’s one of the best ways to turn casual readers into subscribers.
• Thank You: This is the page visitors see immediately after completing an action on your site. You can treat this space as an extra conversion opportunity by adding social share buttons or even a secondary offer, like a limited-time discount for new subscribers.
• Login: A branded replacement for the default WordPress login screen. These templates are perfect for membership sites and online course platforms.

To preview any template, hover over the design and click the magnifying glass icon when it appears.

In this guide, I’m using the ‘Zen Sales Page’ template, since growing an email list is the most common starting point for WordPress site owners. However, the steps will be largely the same no matter which design you choose.

To select a design, hover over it and then click the checkmark icon. 

Step 5: Customize Your Landing Page with the Drag and Drop Builder

With that done, SeedProd automatically opens your chosen template in its visual drag-and-drop builder. This is the workspace where you’ll customize, refine, and ultimately launch your landing page.

The builder is divided into two main areas. On the left side of the screen is the block and section panel, where you’ll find all the elements you can add to your landing page.

On the right side is your live preview. This area updates in real time as you make changes, so you can see exactly how your landing page will look to visitors.

Before we start building our landing page, let’s take a quick look at the three core components of any SeedProd layout: blocks, sections, and global settings.

Blocks

Blocks are the individual elements that make up a landing page, such as a headline, image, button, or a video.

To add a new block to your page, simply click on it in the left-hand panel and then drag it to the live preview area on the right.

SeedProd includes both standard blocks (such as Button, Video, Divider, and Spacer) and advanced blocks (such as Optin Form, Contact Form, and Countdown).

To build a high-converting landing page, you’ll typically need a strong headline, a short paragraph of body copy, a call-to-action button, and a dedicated opt-in form.

To edit a block, simply click to select it in the preview area. The left-hand panel will show all the settings you can use to customize that block, such as adjusting the colors or choosing a new font. 

Sections

Sections are ready-made groups of blocks that you can drop into your layout. These include things like a hero area with a headline and a button, a features section with icon columns, or a testimonial layout complete with customer quotes and avatars.

To browse these pre-built layouts, click the ‘Sections’ tab in the left-hand panel.

I find sections incredibly useful when I’m building longer landing pages, like a sales page.

Instead of designing every single area of the layout from scratch, I can simply drop a few pre-made sections into my landing page and get a professional design in minutes.

Global Settings

The global settings control the overall look and feel of your landing page. This includes your master color palette, font selections, and background styles.

To open this panel, click the gear icon in the bottom-left of the sidebar.

From this screen, you can pick from over 20 built-in color schemes or create your own custom palette. You can also choose curated font pairings powered by Google Fonts.

I usually start with a preset that closely matches my branding, and then fine-tune the primary and secondary colors to make sure everything looks consistent.

Step 6: Build Your Landing Page

Now that you’re familiar with how SeedProd works, you can start building your actual landing page. Simply drag over the blocks or sections you want to use, and then customize them using the settings in the left-hand menu.

You can create a highly streamlined landing page by focusing on a bold headline and a few lines of supporting text, or you can build a more advanced layout.

For example, you can add a countdown timer to show your visitors exactly how much time they have left before the offer expires. This motivates them to take action right now before the deal is gone forever. 

It’s also worth noting that you can speed up the design process using SeedProd’s built-in AI features. For example, after adding an Image block, you can click the ‘Add with AI’ button and describe the graphic or illustration you need.

SeedProd will then generate an image based on your description. 

One of the most challenging parts of building a high-converting landing page is coming up with engaging copy that actually makes people want to take action.

Step 7: Add a Lead Capture Form to Your Landing Page

While every landing page is unique, most successful designs rely on a lead capture form to collect essential visitor details like names and email addresses.

If you’re building a straightforward landing page, you can use SeedProd’s built-in Optin Form block. Simply drag the Optin Form block from the left-hand panel and drop it directly into your layout.

After adding the block, click on it to open its settings in the left-hand panel. 

From here, you can customize the field placeholder text, rewrite the ‘Submit’ button copy, and write a custom success message for visitors to see immediately after submitting their information.

Step 8: Preview Your Landing Page on Mobile and Desktop

Before you hit publish, I always recommend previewing your landing page across multiple devices. Because a massive percentage of your web traffic comes from mobile devices, you need to make sure your layout looks just as polished on a smartphone as it does on a desktop computer.

In the left-hand panel, you’ll find a preview icon. You can cycle between desktop, tablet, and mobile previews by clicking this icon. 

To check your responsive layout, click the mobile phone icon when it appears. 

The live preview area will instantly resize to simulate a smartphone screen, allowing you to scroll through your entire page exactly as a mobile visitor would.

Most of SeedProd’s blocks include built-in mobile responsive settings. This allows you to adjust font sizes, alignment, margins, or padding specifically for smaller screens without changing how the page looks on a desktop. For example, if a large headline wraps awkwardly on a smartphone layout, you can resize it directly in the mobile view without changing how it looks on desktop.

When reviewing your mobile layout, I highly recommend paying close attention to your lead capture form and your main call-to-action (CTA). It’s crucial that your form fields are large enough to tap into easily, and that mobile users can press your call-to-action button comfortably with their thumb without needing to zoom in.

Step 9: Connect Your Email Marketing Service

A landing page that captures email addresses is only useful if those leads actually end up inside your email marketing tool. SeedProd integrates directly with all major email providers, so you can route new subscribers straight to your mailing lists without needing to install any extra plugins.

To get started, click the Connect tab at the top of the builder screen to open the integrations panel.

SeedProd offers native support for a wide range of platforms, including Constant Contact, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, and AWeber. 

It also connects directly with Zapier, which is incredibly useful if you need to send data to a customer relationship management (CRM) platform or a specialized marketing service that SeedProd doesn’t support natively.

To connect your provider, simply hover over it and then click the ‘Connect’ button. 

A popup will appear asking you to authorize the connection. This usually just involves signing into your email account or pasting a unique API key from your marketing provider’s dashboard.

Once connected, you’ll be able to choose the exact mailing list or tag where you want to send your new leads. I always recommend creating a dedicated list or tag for each specific landing page, as this makes it incredibly easy to track exactly which campaigns are bringing in new subscribers.

Step 10: Configure Your Page Settings, SEO, and Analytics

The Page Settings tab is one of the most overlooked parts of SeedProd, but it’s where you configure the essential backend details that turn a beautiful design into a high-performing landing page.

To begin, click the Page Settings tab at the top of the builder screen. You’ll see several sub-tabs on the left side, including General, SEO, Analytics, Scripts, and Custom Domain.

In the General section, you can quickly update the page title and URL slug you set earlier in the setup process.

You’ll also find the Page Status toggle, which controls whether your layout is actively live on your site. I always leave this set to Draft until I’ve fully tested every element and I’m completely ready to launch.

The SEO section is where you can add a custom page title and meta description for search engine results.

These snippets also dictate how your landing page looks when someone shares it on social media platforms like Facebook. This makes it the perfect place to optimize your page for higher click-through rates.

The Analytics section connects your landing page directly to Google Analytics via the MonsterInsights plugin. 

I use MonsterInsights on all my sites because it displays all your important traffic and conversion stats right in the WordPress dashboard. This makes it easy to monitor how well your landing page is performing.

The Scripts section gives you an easy way to add custom code snippets to your page header, body, or footer. I typically use this area to safely embed third-party tracking tools, live chat widgets, and behavior-tracking heatmap scripts.

Finally, the Custom Domain section lets you map your landing page to its own unique domain name, rather than a standard URL on your main website. This is incredibly useful for specific marketing campaigns when you want a highly targeted, branded web address for your promotions.

Step 11: Publish Your Landing Page

Once you’re happy with how your landing page looks on both desktop and mobile, you’re ready to make it live.

In the upper-right corner, click the arrow next to the Save button and select Publish from the dropdown menu.

After clicking the button, a success popup will appear confirming that your landing page is officially live on your website.

To see the published page, click the See Live Page button.

Alternatively, you can open a new browser tab and type the page’s URL slug.

That’s it! You’ve successfully created and published a high-converting landing page in WordPress without writing a single line of code.

I get a lot of questions about landing pages from beginners and experienced site owners alike. Below, I’ve answered the ones that come up most often to help you troubleshoot issues, understand your tools, and get as many conversions as possible. 

What’s the difference between a landing page and a regular WordPress page?

Typically, a regular WordPress page is built to be perfectly consistent with the rest of your website. It almost always features standard layout elements like your main navigation menu, a widget-filled sidebar, and a footer packed with links and contact information. 

This encourages visitors to stick around, click around, and explore different areas of your site.

A landing page does the exact opposite. It completely strips away the global navigation menu, the sidebars, and the footer links so the visitor is presented with one clear action to take.

Because there’s no external links to distract the visitor, landing pages will almost always drastically outperform a regular website page when you’re routing targeted traffic from a paid ad campaign, a newsletter blast, or a social media promotion.

Do I need to upgrade to SeedProd Pro to create a landing page?

You can absolutely create a landing page using the free version of SeedProd. However, the free version gives you fewer templates to choose from and doesn’t include advanced blocks, such as the critical Optin Form block.

If you’re still stuck after trying those steps, the issue is almost always a low PHP memory limit set by your web hosting server. Because page builders require a bit more processing power to compile layouts, you’ll need to contact your hosting provider’s support team and ask them to increase your server’s PHP memory limit.

So, you’ve spent a lot of time carefully organizing your content into categories?

Bad news: the built-in WordPress search bar completely ignores categories. 

This can be disastrous for the user experience. Imagine someone searching for ‘Protein Powder’ on your fitness blog because they want a specific product review. Instead of seeing your ‘Reviews’ category, they get a cluttered list of every workout and recipe post that happens to mention protein.

Most visitors won’t stick around to hunt for the right link. They’ll simply leave your site and look for answers elsewhere.

Adding a category filter to your search bar completely changes that experience. It gives your audience a shortcut to the content they actually care about.

Whether you’re running a membership site, a busy blog, or an online shop, this small change helps visitors find what they need faster. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to quickly add ‘Search by Category’ to your WordPress site, without writing a single line of code.

Why I Add Search By Category to My WordPress Site

Before I show you how to upgrade your site’s search, I want to explain why this small change makes such a big difference. I’ve added category search to several of my own sites, and I’m always surprised by how much it helps visitors find exactly what they need.

In my experience, there’s several major benefits to adding category search to your WordPress website:

• Improves the User Experience: When someone visits a site that covers a wide variety of topics, they usually have something very specific in mind. Imagine you run a lifestyle blog. In this scenario, a reader who’s interested in your ‘Healthy Eating’ section shouldn’t have to sift through your ‘Home Decor’ or ‘Travel’ tips just to find a salad recipe. By adding a category dropdown, visitors can find the content they want in seconds rather than minutes. 
• Less Bounce, More Engagement: If a visitor searches for something and gets a wall of irrelevant results, they’re most likely going to leave your site (this is called a ‘bounce’). By adding a category search, you help those visitors find exactly what they need on the first try. As a result, they stay on your site longer, explore more pages, and feel like your website actually works for them.
• A Better Experience for Niche Sites: If you run a directory, a course library, or a membership site, this feature is a lifesaver. A reader on a real estate site can search only for ‘Rentals,’ or a student can search only for ‘Lessons.’ This kind of focused experience is exactly what people expect from a modern, professional website.
• Smarter Than the Default WordPress Search: The built-in WordPress search is very basic. In fact, it only looks for keywords and doesn’t understand your site’s structure. Step 1: Install and Activate SearchWP

The easiest way to add a ‘search by category’ feature to WordPress is by using SearchWP. For years, I’ve used this plugin to create all kinds of advanced search bars, ranging from user-friendly category dropdowns, right through to complex searches that scan across custom post types.

Every SearchWP plan allows you to search by category, including the Basic license ($99/year), so you can simply choose the license that makes sense for you. 

Once you’ve purchased your SearchWP license, the next step is to install the plugin on your site. 

If you’ve never installed a WordPress plugin before, don’t worry! Our beginner’s guide on how to install and activate a plugin will walk you through the process, step-by-step. 

Step 2: Add Your License Key

With the plugin active, the next step is adding your license key. 

In your WordPress dashboard, go to SearchWP » Settings. 

You can now go ahead and add your key into the ‘License Key’ field. You can find this information in the email you received when you bought SearchWP, or by logging into your account on the SearchWP website. 

With that done, click the ‘Verify Key’ button. 

Step 3: Choosing What Your Site Actually Searches

This is where SearchWP separates itself from the standard WordPress search bar.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all algorithm that you can’t control, SearchWP provides a user-friendly dashboard where you can customize the logic behind your search results. This allows you to fine-tune how your site handles every query, so visitors can always find exactly what they’re looking for.

To make these changes, go to SearchWP » Algorithm. 

In SearchWP, search engines are essentially sets of rules that tell WordPress how to perform a search. You can create separate engines for different parts of your site, such as a ‘Staff Directory’ search that only looks through names and job titles, or a ‘Resources’ search that exclusively scans through your PDF library.

To start, you’ll see a single engine called ‘Default.’ This controls the main search box on your site, so we’ll be focusing on it throughout this guide.

Out-of-the-box, the Default engine searches your pages, posts, and media files. However, you can change these content sources to better fit your needs. For example, you might remove media files to prevent random images from cluttering your results, or you might add WooCommerce products so customers can find items to buy. 

To add more content types, click the ‘Sources & Settings’ button.

You’ll now see all the different content types across your site. The options you see may vary depending on whether you’ve installed additional plugins like WooCommerce or created your own custom post types. 

No matter what appears, you can include or exclude content simply by checking or unchecking its box.

When you’re happy with your selection, click ‘Done’ to close the popup.

Step 4: Adjusting the Applicable Attribute Relevance

With your sources selected, it’s time to look at the ‘Applicable Attribute Relevance’ sliders within each content type. Each slider controls a specific attribute, like the Title, Content (the body text), Slug, or Excerpt. 

When you move a slider further to the right, you’re telling SearchWP that words found in that area are more important than others. This means they’ll have a bigger impact on the search results.

When you move a slider to the left, you’re telling SearchWP they’re less important, and should therefore have less impact on the search results. 

Let’s look at an example: if you move the ‘Title’ slider to the middle and the ‘Content’ slider to the right, then a keyword found in the body text will carry more weight than one found in the title.

Pro Tip: I almost always drag the Title slider all the way to the right for every post type. In my experience, if a visitor types in a phrase that matches your headline exactly, that post is almost certainly what they’re looking for.

Simply go through each content type (Posts, Pages, and any others you’ve enabled) and adjust the sliders, as required. 

Don’t be afraid to experiment here. You can always return to this screen and adjust the settings until you’re happy with the results. 

Step 5: Add Categories to Your Search Engine

Next, you need to tell SearchWP that it should take a post’s category into consideration when performing a search. 

To do this, click the ‘Add/Remove Attributes’ button inside the ‘Posts’ section. 

In the popup that appears, find the ‘Taxonomies’ field. 

Start typing ‘Categories’ into this field, and then select the correct option when it appears in the dropdown menu. 

With that done, click ‘Done’ to close the pop up.

‘Categories’ will now appear as a new item in your list, complete with its own ‘Applicable Attribute Relevance’ slider.

You can now adjust this slider by dragging it to the right (to make it more important) or to the left (to make it less important). I usually move the slider to the center. This creates a nice balance where a category match influences the search results, but doesn’t completely overwhelm exact title matches.

Step 6: Rebuild the Search Index

Once you’re happy with how everything is set up, don’t forget to click the ‘Save’ button. 

Instead of searching your live pages every time a visitor types a word, SearchWP instead looks at a saved index and delivers its results instantly. Once you’ve changed your settings, you need to rebuild this index so SearchWP can re-scan your site and apply the new rules.

To do this, just click the ‘Rebuild Index’ button. 

This may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection, your WordPress hosting provider, and how much content you have. 

When it’s finished, SearchWP will display an ‘Index Status 100%’ message. Your new category-aware search is ready to use. 

If you ever make a massive change to your site (like deleting a hundred old posts or significantly changing your category structure) I recommend coming back to this page and rebuilding the index.

While SearchWP does an excellent job of updating itself as you go, a manual refresh ensures your search results are perfectly accurate and up-to-date straight away.

Step 7: Create Your Search by Category Form

Now, you’re ready to build the actual search form visitors will interact with. The good news is that SearchWP includes its own form builder, so you don’t have to worry about writing code or wrestling with complicated settings.  

In your WordPress dashboard, go to SearchWP » Search Forms and click the ‘Add New’ button.

This opens the form builder, where you can customize exactly how your search bar looks and behaves.

By default, SearchWP gives the form a generic name like ‘Search Form 1.’ I highly recommend clicking the pencil icon and renaming it to something more descriptive, like ‘Category Search’ or ‘Blog Sidebar Search.’

I once helped a site owner who had created six different ‘Search Form 1’ variations for different pages. It was a nightmare trying to figure out which one was which! Taking five seconds to rename the form now will save you a massive headache later when you’re trying to update your site.

Next, you can choose a layout. SearchWP actually comes with a dedicated ‘Category Search’ layout, which is a huge time-saver. You can simply go ahead and click this theme to select it.

After picking your layout, scroll to the ‘Custom Styling’ section and click the toggle for the ‘Category Search’ slider. 

This adds an extra dropdown menu to your search bar, so visitors can filter their results by specific categories.

Finally, check the ‘Engine’ field, as this tells the form which set of rules to follow.

Since we customized the ‘Default’ engine, you’ll want to make sure it’s selected. 

Step 8: Declutter Your Category Search

By default, SearchWP includes every category in its dropdown menu. However, you may not want to show every single category to your visitors. For example, you’ll typically want to hide ‘Uncategorized’ or any internal categories you’re using like ‘Admin Notes’ or ‘Archive.’ 

To clean things up, scroll to the ‘Select Category’ field. To exclude a category from the list, simply click the ‘X’ icon next to its name.

If you change your mind later, re-adding a category is just as easy. 

Simply start typing the category’s name into the same field. When the right option appears in the list, click to re-add it. 

Once you’re happy with the category selections, click the ‘Save’ button to store your changes.

Congratulations! You’ve just built a smart, filtered search tool that’s far more advanced than the standard WordPress search bar.

Step 9: Embed the Form on Your Site

A ‘Search By Category’ form doesn’t help anyone if it’s just sitting in your dashboard! In this final step, I’ll show you how to place the form on your site so visitors can actually use it.

SearchWP gives you a few different methods, but the easiest is to use the built-in SearchWP block, so that’s the method I’ll be covering first.

• Using the SearchWP From Block 

SearchWP comes with a dedicated block that lets you add a search bar to any page, post, or widget area. This is a good option if you want to create a custom search page or give visitors a way to search within a specific section of your site, like a members-only area, customer support portal, or storefront.

Simply open the page or post where you want to display the search form. Then, click the ‘+’ button and start typing ‘SearchWP Form.’

When the right block appears, click to add it to your layout.  

Next, open the dropdown menu and select the form we just created.

SearchWP will immediately show a preview of how the form looks, including that handy category dropdown.

You can then go ahead and either publish or update the page as normal, in order make your ‘Search By Category’ form live.

Pro Tip: If you’re building a dedicated search page, I suggest adding a little bit of introductory text above this block, such as “Not sure where to start? Pick a category below.” In my experience, giving users a small nudge or instruction can increase search engagement.

• Using Shortcode 

While blocks are my go-to method, sometimes you might need to add a search bar to a location that doesn’t support them, such as a specific template file or an older sidebar widget. 

Thankfully, SearchWP has you covered: every time you create a form, the plugin automatically generates a dedicated shortcode for it.

To find this shortcode, go to SearchWP » Search Forms. Simply find the form you want to display and copy its accompanying shortcode. 

You can now paste it into any location that supports shortcodes. If you’re using the WordPress block editor but still prefer the shortcode method, then you can even paste it into a Shortcode block.

Step 10: Test Your New Search by Category

Before we wrap up, it’s always a good idea to test your new search form, just to make sure everything is working as expected.

Simply visit your live site and head to the page where you embedded the form. You should see your new search bar complete with the category dropdown we configured.

To test it, open the dropdown menu and select a specific category. Then, type in a keyword or phrase that you know exists in an article within that category, and hit enter. 

The search results page should now display only the posts that match both your keyword and the selected category. 

To be 100% sure everything is linked up correctly, try searching for that same keyword again. However, this time leave the category dropdown set to ‘All Categories.’ 

You should see a much broader list of results from across your entire site. If you see that difference, congratulations – your dropdown is working perfectly!

If you perform a test search and see ‘No results found’ (even though you know the post exists), don’t panic. This typically means SearchWP hasn’t applied all the new category rules yet. Just head back to SearchWP » Algorithm and click ‘Rebuild Index’ to force a fresh rebuild. This should fix the problem. 

It’s as easy as that! You’ve successfully moved past the limited default WordPress search and given your visitors a professional, category-aware tool to explore your content.

First, it helps you fine-tune your results. For example, if you notice visitors are searching for a specific term but consistently clicking the third or fourth result, you should tweak your Attribute Relevance sliders to make this content easier to find.

Beyond just technical tweaks, this data is also a valuable source of new content ideas. It may reveal content gaps, which are topics your visitors are clearly interested in, but your site doesn’t cover yet. For example, if you see visitors searching for a specific tutorial you haven’t written yet, then this is the perfect idea for your next blog post and a chance to improve your WordPress SEO at the same time. 

To see these search analytics, you’ll need to activate SearchWP’s Metrics extension. To do this, go to SearchWP » Extensions, find the ‘Metrics’ section and click its ‘Install’ button.

SearchWP will automatically install and activate the Metrics add-on for you. 

Once that’s finished, head to SearchWP » Metrics in your left-hand menu.

You can now see detailed information including the most popular terms people are searching for, click-through rates, and clicks per search.

Can I change how the search form looks?

What Is Schema Markup?

For example, when you add schema to a product page, you’re essentially saying, “this is a product that costs $49, it’s in stock, and customers have reviewed it.” 

That structured information is what powers the rich results you see in search results.

You’ve probably noticed some of these already:

• FAQ sections that expand right on the search results page.

All of that comes from schema markup working behind the scenes.

The technical format behind schema is called JSON-LD, which stands for JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data. But don’t let that intimidate you. You’ll never need to write or even look at JSON-LD code if you use the right WordPress plugin. 

In this tutorial, I’ll show you a tool that generates schema for you automatically based on simple form fields you fill out in your WordPress dashboard.

Why I Add Schema Markup to Every WordPress Site

I’ve tested a lot of WordPress SEO strategies over the years. However, I’ve found that schema markup is one of the most effective tools in your arsenal – and it takes very little effort to set up.

Here’s why I make schema a top priority on every single site I work on:

• Richer Search Listings: Schema tells Google exactly what your content is – whether that’s a recipe, a product, an event, or a tutorial. When Google understands your content at that level, it can display ‘rich snippets’ with images, star ratings, prices, and cook times. As a result, your listing takes up more visual space, which makes it stand out from the plain text links around it. 
• Higher Click-Through Rates: Standing out in Google is easier than you think. When your listing displays extra info like star ratings or FAQ accordions, it leaps off the page compared to the standard, plain-text results. In this way, schema and rich snippets help you get more traffic without even having to move up the rankings. 
• Better Content Understanding: Without schema, search engines rely on algorithms to guess what your page is about. Sometimes they get it right, but sometimes they don’t. Schema removes the guesswork by telling Google that your page is a product review, a how-to guide, or a job posting. As a result, every piece of content gets properly categorized with all the relevant details attached.
• Future-Proofing for AI Search: AI-powered tools like Google’s AI Overviews rely heavily on structured data to pull and attribute information. Sites with proper schema are better positioned to appear in these AI-generated summaries. As search evolves, having clean structured data will give you a significant advantage over sites that only have plain HTML content.
• Competitive Edge Without More Content: This is what I love most about schema. You don’t need to publish more posts, build more backlinks, or spend hours rewriting content. You’re simply helping Google display what you’ve already created. It’s one of the few SEO improvements that can increase your visibility without increasing your workload.

The best part? You don’t need to write any code to make this happen. There’s a WordPress plugin that handles everything for you, and I’m going to walk you through the entire setup right now.

Step 1: Install and Activate All in One SEO

When it comes to handling schema markup on your WordPress site, I always recommend All in One SEO (AIOSEO).

To get the specific schema features we’re using in this tutorial, you’ll need the premium version of AIOSEO (which starts at $49.50/year for the Basic plan). 

That said, if you’re just starting out or working on a tight budget, don’t worry. There’s a free version of All in One SEO that includes plenty of essential features. It’s a great way to improve your site’s rankings without spending a dime.

After activating AIOSEO, the Setup Wizard will appear automatically. Don’t skip this! It’s the easiest way to configure your basic settings. I always suggest following the on-screen prompts carefully, as it’ll save you a lot of time and effort later on.

Here, click the ‘Relaunch Setup Wizard’ link.

After completing the setup wizard, go to All in One SEO » General Settings.

On this screen, enter your license key and click ‘Activate.’ You can find this key by logging into your AIOSEO account, or by checking the confirmation email you received when you purchased AIOSEO. 

That’s it! With the setup out of the way, you’re all set to start adding some SEO-friendly schema markup to your WordPress blog or website. 

Step 2: Configure Your Site-Wide Schema Settings

Before you start adding schema to individual posts, it’s important to configure your site-wide settings. 

This tells search engines the basic information about your site so they have a clear, accurate understanding of who you are and what your website represents, right from the very first crawl. 

To get started, go to All in One SEO » Search Appearance. You’ll land right on the Global Settings tab, which is exactly where you need to be.

Here, scroll to the Knowledge Graph section.

You’ll see fields for Website Name and Alternate Website Name. By default, AIOSEO uses your WordPress site title, but you can override this if you want to display a different name in the search results.

The ‘Alternate Website Name’ is completely optional. I usually leave it blank, unless I’m working on a brand that has a really common abbreviation that people might actually search for. If that sounds like you, then go ahead and add this alternative name. 

Below that, you’ll find the most important choice on the page: whether your site represents a Person or an Organization. This helps search engines understand your brand identity so they can display your content correctly in the search results.

If you’re running a business, company, or brand, select ‘Organization.’ This unlocks fields where you can enter your company name, description, and contact info. You can also upload a logo, which should be at least 112 x 112 pixels.

If you’re building a personal blog or portfolio site, select ‘Person’ instead. You can then either select an existing user from your site or enter a name and upload a logo manually.

Once you’ve completed all the relevant fields, don’t forget to click ‘Save Changes.’ AIOSEO will now apply this schema to every page and post across your entire WordPress website.  

Step 3: Set Default Schema Types for Your Content

With your site-wide settings in place, it’s time to tell AIOSEO how to handle your content by default. This ensures that every new page or post is assigned the correct schema automatically, so you don’t have to configure it manually every time.

While you’re still on the All in One SEO » Search Appearance page, click the Content Types tab at the top.

You’ll now see a list of all your content types, including your Posts, Pages, and any custom post types you’ve added.

You can click any of these to expand their settings, and then select the Schema Markup tab.

By default, AIOSEO assigns the Article schema to Posts and the Web Page schema to Pages. These settings work well for most WordPress websites, so I recommend leaving them alone unless you have a specific reason to change them.

If you’re setting up your Posts, you’ll notice a secondary option to choose between Article, Blog Post, and News Article. To summarize:

• Blog Post: This is typically the best choice if you’re running a standard WordPress blog. 
• News Article: Use this if you publish timely, journalistic news content.
• Article: This is your best bet for anything that doesn’t fit the other two options. 

If you’re using WooCommerce or another eCommerce plugin, you’ll also see a Products content type. 

In that case, you should expand this section and make sure its ‘Schema Type’ is set to ‘Product.’ AIOSEO will then automatically tag all your items with the right structured data.

By setting these defaults now, you’re building a solid schema foundation for your entire site in just a few clicks. Every time you hit ‘Publish’ on a new post, AIOSEO will apply the right schema automatically.

Once you’ve made your selections, click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Step 4: Add Schema Markup to an Individual Post or Page

Now comes the part where AIOSEO really shines. Beyond your site-wide defaults, you can customize the schema for any specific piece of content right from the WordPress editor.

Simply open any post or page you want to update. Then, scroll to the AIOSEO Settings section, and click the Schema tab.

Straight away, you’ll see any default schema that AIOSEO has already applied, based on your site-wide settings.

Want to add a new type of schema, or change what’s already there? Then click the Generate Schema button.

To add a type, just click the ‘+’ icon next to it.

AIOSEO will then add it to your post and open the configuration fields for that specific schema.

Many of these fields come pre-populated with smart defaults that AIOSEO pulls from your content. For example, the Name field defaults to your post title, the Description to your post content, and the Image to your featured image. 

AIOSEO uses Smart Tags to handle this, so sometimes you won’t need to change a thing.

If you do need to add some information, then you can type directly into the fields. For example, you’ll need to fill in your specific questions and answers for the FAQ schema.

I really like how AIOSEO lets you add multiple schema types to a single post. For example, you can apply both the Article and FAQ schema to the same page. 

I use this combination regularly on my own sites, to ensure my content stands out when it appears in search results and attracts as much traffic as possible.

When you’re happy with your schema settings, just click the ‘Add Schema’ button.

After that, you can save or update the page as you normally would. AIOSEO will then automatically inject the schema markup into your page’s source code. 

Your visitors won’t see anything different on the page, but search engines will have all the structured data they need to properly process and display your content. 

Step 5: Validate and Test Your Schema Markup

After you’ve added your schema, it’s a good idea to verify that everything is configured correctly before you hit ‘Publish.’ AIOSEO makes this easy with a built-in validation tool that connects directly to Google’s testing service.

Once you’ve finished adding schema to a post or page, just click the Validate Schema button.

This opens a window showing the raw JSON-LD markup that AIOSEO has generated for your content. You can review the code to ensure all the fields look right.

Don’t worry if the code itself looks like gibberish; you don’t need to be a developer to understand it. Just look for your title, description, author, and dates to ensure they match what you intended.

To run a full validation with Google, click the ‘Test with Google’ button in the top-right corner. 

This opens Google’s Rich Results Testing Tool in a new browser tab, with your schema code already loaded and ready to go. 

Just click the Test Code button and wait a few seconds for the results.

On the left side, Google’s Rich Results Testing Tool will show all the JSON schema it’s detected.

To the right, you’ll see whether your markup is valid or whether there’s any errors or warnings you need to address. 

If everything passes, you’re all set! If you do see any errors, the tool will tell you exactly what fields you need to fix. You can then head back to AIOSEO, update those specific fields in the Schema tab, and run the test again.

I make sure to test every piece of schema I add, especially when I’m using a specific type for the first time. It takes less than a minute, and it gives me complete confidence that Google will read my structured data correctly.

Once you’ve confirmed your schema is valid, you might even consider pairing it with a Google Analytics plugin to track whether your rich results are actually driving more clicks over time.

That’s all there is to the core setup. You’ve now properly configured your schema markup, with site-wide defaults in place and the option to customize any individual piece of content, if required. 

Every new post and page will automatically get the right schema, and you’ve got a reliable process to validate everything before you go live.

Choosing the Right Schema Type for Your Content

The steps above will work perfectly for most blog posts and standard pages. However, AIOSEO supports 20 different schema types, and choosing the right one for your specific content can unlock even more powerful rich results in Google.

With that in mind, here’s the schema types I use most often, along with some tips on when and how you should use them.

Article Schema

Article schema is the most common type you’ll use. If you’ve been following along, AIOSEO is likely already applying it to your blog posts by default.

When you edit the Article schema for a specific post, you’ll see a ‘Type’ dropdown with three options:

• Article: This is the generic type that works for any written content.
• Blog Post: This is more specific and is the best choice for standard blog content and personal writing.
• News Article: This is designed for timely, newsworthy content on journalism or dedicated news sites.

Beyond selecting the type, you can configure the headline, description, image, and target keywords. 

You’ll also find author fields where you can set the author name and URL. I always make sure these are filled out, as it’s crucial for building your site’s authority and supporting Google’s E-E-A-T signals.

The ‘Dates’ section lets you control the published and last-modified dates. You’ll also see an ‘Include Dates’ toggle, which controls whether search engines display these dates in its search results.

I always leave this enabled. It helps readers see how current my information is, and it serves as an important trust signal.

For an SEO optimized writing workflow, keeping your dates visible and accurate is one of those small details that really adds up over time. It shows both Google and your readers that your content is being actively maintained.

FAQ Schema

FAQ schema is a fantastic tool for any post or page that features a Q&A section. When Google identifies this schema, it can display your questions as interactive, expandable accordions directly in the search results. 

This is a game-changer because it significantly increases your listing’s visual footprint, helping you take up more space and grab more attention.

To add FAQ schema, click ‘Generate Schema’ in the Schema tab and select ‘FAQ’ from the catalog. You’ll see fields for a ‘Name’ and ‘Description’ at the top, which default to your post title and content.

After that, just type each FAQ into the Question and Answer fields. 

If you need more room, click the ‘Add Another Question’ link.

You can add as many question and answer pairs as you need.

Keep in mind that FAQ schema only appears in your page’s source code. It doesn’t automatically create a visible FAQ section on your page for visitors to read. 

With that in mind, you’ll still need to include the actual FAQ content in your post so readers can see it. The schema simply tells Google about it in a structured format.

It’s also worth remembering that Google doesn’t guarantee it’ll display your FAQ as a rich result. The decision happens on a case-by-case basis, as Google considers both the search query and the quality of your content. 

How-To Schema

If you publish tutorials or instructional content, How-To schema can make your content eligible for step-by-step rich results in Google.

Just be aware that Google retired How-To rich results on desktop search in early 2026. The markup is still incredibly valuable for AI search, mobile previews, and content categorization, but you won’t see that visual step-by-step carousel on desktop anymore. 

That said, I still add How-To schema to every tutorial I write, since it helps search engines and AI tools understand how my content is structured.

Simply select ‘How-To’ from the Schema Catalog and you’ll find several helpful fields. At the top, you’ll see the basics for name, description, and image.

Below that, you’ll find sections for ‘Supplies’ (items the reader needs to complete the instructions) and ‘Tools’ (equipment required). There’s also a ‘Required Time’ field where you can enter the expected duration in days, hours, and minutes.

The ‘Steps’ section is where you outline each step of your tutorial. Every step has fields for a title, details, URL (which can be an anchor link to that section on your page), and an image. 

Just click ‘Add Another Step’ to keep building your step-by-step schema. 

You can also include cost information with the ‘Price’ and ‘Currency’ fields. This is super useful for tutorials where the reader needs to buy supplies in order to follow along. 

I find this especially helpful on craft or DIY content where material costs really matter to the reader.

Product Schema

Product schema is essential if you sell anything online or write product reviews. It tells Google the price, availability, brand, and other details that it can display as rich snippets in its search results.

If you run a WooCommerce store, then you can add this schema directly from the WooCommerce product editor. Simply create a new product or open an existing one for editing, and then scroll to the AIOSEO Settings box.

From here, you can click the ‘Schema’ tab.

Then, select ‘Generate Schema.’

You can now choose ‘Product’ as the schema type. 

Unlike some other schema types, Product comes with an ‘Autogenerate Fields’ toggle. When enabled, AIOSEO automatically pulls most of the product information directly from your WooCommerce data, including the price, stock status, and SKU. 

This saves a ton of time since you don’t have to enter everything manually.

For non-WooCommerce sites (like review blogs or affiliate sites) you can select ‘Product’ as the schema type and then add the information manually. For example, you can add:

• Basic Details: Name, description, brand, and image.
• Identifiers: SKU, GTIN, MPN, and ISBN.
• Offer Information: Price, currency, and availability.
• Physical Attributes: Material, color, pattern, and size.

Recipe Schema

If you run a food blog, Recipe schema is an absolute must. It’s one of the most visually impactful schema types you can use, as it encourages Google to display your content with large images, cook times, calorie counts, and star ratings right on the search results page. 

The Recipe schema in AIOSEO includes fields for the recipe name, description, author, image, ingredients, dish type, cuisine type, and keywords. 

There’s also a nutrition section where you can add serving amounts and calorie counts, plus dedicated time fields for both preparation and cooking duration.

The ‘Instructions’ section works similarly to How-To schema. You add each step of the recipe with a title, details, and an optional image. This helps search engines understand the flow of your recipe, and Google may even display those individual steps directly in its search results.

Google tends to reward thorough, well-structured data with more prominent rich results. With that in mind, I always make sure to fill out as many fields as possible when using Recipe schema.

Event and Job Posting Schema

Event schema is designed for workshops, concerts, webinars, classes, and any other time-based gatherings you want to promote. 

When Google recognizes this data, it might showcase your event in a dedicated carousel right at the top of the search results. 

Meanwhile, Job Posting schema powers the ‘Google for Jobs’ listings you see when you search for specific job titles or ‘jobs near me.’ 

If you run a careers page on your WordPress site, this schema is essential for getting your openings featured in those job-specific results. 

Both Event and Job Posting schemas include fields for key details that Google uses to populate its rich results. This includes things like start and end dates for events, or salary range and employment type for jobs.

Shortcuts: Adding Schema via AIOSEO’s Blocks

Beyond the Schema Generator, AIOSEO includes dedicated blocks for some of the most common schema types. These blocks are a faster alternative when you want your schema to perfectly match the content visitors see on the screen. 

AIOSEO handles both the visual output and the structured data automatically.

The main blocks you need to know about are: 

• FAQ with JSON Schema block: This lets you build your FAQ section visually in the editor. AIOSEO attaches FAQ schema to every question-and-answer pair without you ever needing to open the Schema Generator.

Saving Time with Reusable Schema Templates

If you regularly publish the same type of content, AIOSEO’s schema templates can save you a ton of repetitive work. Instead of configuring the same schema fields from scratch for every new post, you can create a template once and then apply it with a single click.

To create a template, start by configuring the schema on any post exactly how you want it. Once you’re happy with the settings, click the ‘Save Schema as Template’ button.

Then, give your template a descriptive name, such as Blog Post Article Schema or Product Review Schema.

Finally, click ‘Save Template.’

Now, whenever you create new content, you can skip the manual setup. Instead, click ‘Generate Schema’ as usual. Then, click the ‘Your Templates’ tab to see all your saved templates. 

Next, just find the template you want to use and click its ‘+’ icon. AIOSEO will then apply this template to your content with all the fields pre-configured.

Common Schema Markup Mistakes to Avoid

Schema markup is forgiving in a lot of ways, but I see a handful of mistakes on WordPress sites that can quietly cancel out the SEO benefits you’re hoping for. 

That said, here’s the issues I check for whenever I audit a site’s structured data:

• Marking up hidden content: This is the single most common mistake I see. You might add FAQ schema to a page that doesn’t actually show those questions and answers to the reader, or add Review schema for ratings that aren’t visible. Google specifically warns against this. In fact, Google’s stance is simple: schema must describe content that a visitor can actually see and interact with on the page. 
• Duplicate or conflicting schema types: If you apply both Article and Blog Post schema to the same page, or layer two different author entities on top of each other, Google can get confused. It may even ignore your structured data completely. Instead, limit yourself to one primary schema type per page, and only add supplementary types (like FAQ) when each one describes a distinct section of the content. 
• Missing required properties: Every schema type has a set of properties Google requires in order to display a rich result. If you skip these fields, then Google may treat your markup as incomplete. As a result, you won’t get the rich result. That said, always fill out as many fields as you possibly can. 
• Outdated or inaccurate data: If your Product schema still says an item is in stock when it’s been sold out for months, Google will eventually stop trusting your structured data. That’s why I always review my schema every time I update my content, to make sure the data stays current.
• Overstating claims: Resist the temptation to add Review schema with artificially high star ratings, or to mark every page as a NewsArticle just because you want more visibility. Google’s spam filters are specifically trained to catch these patterns, so it’ll almost certainly hurt your rankings.

I’d created some of those fields manually, but many others were created automatically by the plugins I’d installed (that means you could be using multiple custom fields on your site right now, without your knowledge). 

And WordPress doesn’t include custom field data in its search results. 

Once I understood the problem, the fix turned out to be surprisingly straightforward, and it had a massive impact on my site’s user experience.  

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through an easy, code-free way to make every custom field searchable. By the end of this tutorial, your visitors will finally be able to find exactly what they’re looking for, every time.

You now have a choice. If you want to include every custom field in your search results, select ‘Any Meta Key.’

I use this option on content-heavy sites where I don’t want visitors to miss anything important. This option ensures that nothing gets overlooked, especially when visitors might search for any  number of different details.

If you want to be more selective, you can type the name of a specific custom field into the dropdown. When the right field appears, click to select it.

This is a smarter choice if your site has dozens of custom fields, but you only want to make a few searchable. For example, on a WooCommerce site you might only include fields like SKU and material, rather than including every single custom field and cluttering the results with unnecessary noise.

Just type in the name of each custom field you want to search, and click to add it to the list.

After that, click the ‘Done’ button.

Step 4: Adjusting the Weight of Each Field

After closing the popup, you’ll see a new ‘Custom Fields’ entry within your content type section. Each custom field has its own relevance slider, which is how you’ll fine-tune your results.

To give a custom field more influence over where content appears in the search results, drag its slider to the right. Alternatively, drag it to the left to make that field less important relative to everything else.

Here’s how I think about it. If the custom field contains information that visitors are likely to search for directly, I drag that slider to the right. For example, in a WooCommerce store, I might prioritize the product SKU or price. This tells SearchWP that if a visitor types in a specific SKU, that product should appear at the very top of their search results.

For fields that contain supplementary data (like Material or Color), I typically drag the slider to the left. This ensures the data is still indexed and searchable, but it won’t outrank your post titles or more important keywords. 

Finding the right balance can really improve the quality of your search results. That said, I recommend returning to this screen a few times to experiment with different settings, to see whether these changes improve the quality of your search results.

Step 5: Saving and Rebuilding the Search Index

Once you’re happy with how everything is set up, scroll to the top of the page and click the ‘Save’ button.

At this point, you may see a notification: ‘This index needs to be rebuilt.’ 

If you see this message, go ahead and click the ‘Rebuild Index’ button.

SearchWP will immediately begin rebuilding its search index to include your new settings. The length of time this takes depends on how much content your site has. I’ve found that SearchWP indexes smaller sites in well under a minute, while larger sites with thousands of posts typically take a few minutes.

The good news is that SearchWP manages the entire rebuild in the background, so you can continue working on other things.

Once SearchWP has successfully rebuilt the index, your WordPress search bar will immediately start returning results that include matches found in your custom fields.

You don’t need to modify your search form or change any templates, as SearchWP integrates seamlessly with the default WordPress search functionality. It’s as easy as that!

Getting Even More Out of SearchWP

Once you’ve made your custom fields searchable, there are a few additional SearchWP settings that I always enable on my own sites. In my experience, these small adjustments can help visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.

To access them, go to SearchWP » Settings. Here, scroll to the ‘General Settings’ area.

Here’s the options I recommend enabling:

• Partial matches. This is a game changer for sites where visitors might not type the exact term stored in your content. After enabling partial matching, a customer who searches for ‘leather bag’ could still find a product where the custom field says ‘genuine leather bag.’ 
• Closest match. When a search genuinely returns no results, SearchWP will suggest the closest available content instead of showing a blank page. It’s a much better experience than leaving your visitors with nothing. In particular, I like using this feature alongside SearchWP’s partial matches to ensure visitors always have a path forward.
• Quoted searches. This allows visitors to search for an exact phrase by wrapping their search terms in quotation marks. Power users love this feature, so it’s something I always activate on sites that target a more tech-savvy audience.
• Highlight terms. For each search result, SearchWP displays a snippet of text with the keywords highlighted. It’s a feature I always use on sites with long-form content or PDFs, as it helps visitors spot the most relevant part of the document.

Tracking What Your Visitors Search For

In my opinion, one of SearchWP’s most underrated features is its built-in search analytics. Monitoring your site’s search is like reading your visitors’ minds. It reveals exactly what they’re looking for, and helps you identify any content your site may be missing.

To see this information, go to SearchWP » Statistics.

You can view data from the past 30 days, the last year, or the complete history of your site. I review these statistics regularly, because it’s the best way to identify content gaps I wouldn’t have spotted otherwise.

If I notice that visitors keep searching for a term that returns no results, that’s a clear signal. It tells me that I either need to create new content around that specific topic, or I need to update my search settings to help visitors find existing content that matches those terms.

This insight can even help you improve your WordPress SEO. By identifying the topics and keywords your audience cares about, you can optimize your posts to get more engagement and traffic.

Can I choose specific custom fields to include rather than all of them?

Absolutely. As I covered in Step 3, you can control exactly which custom fields get indexed.

While the ‘Any Meta Key’ option makes every single field searchable, you can also select individual fields one-by-one. 

If your site has dozens of different custom fields, I generally recommend being selective and only including the ones your visitors are actually likely to search for. In my experience, this is the best way to keep your search results focused and relevant. 

What happens if I change or delete a custom field later?

SearchWP automatically synchronizes its index with your content, so any updates are usually picked up during the next index refresh. If you remove a custom field entirely, it’ll stop appearing in your search results once the index updates.

In my experience, you don’t really have to worry about manual maintenance. SearchWP stays in sync with your database to ensure your visitors always see the most current information.

Does this work with WooCommerce product attributes?

My Experience

To see how WP Simple Pay handles real-world taxes, I created a tax calculator for a fictional yoga instructor who wanted to sell class packs and workshop tickets through her WordPress website. 

In this scenario, my imaginary instructor didn’t need a complete WooCommerce store. She just wanted an easy way for students to pay while ensuring she stayed compliant with tax regulations.

WP Simple Pay proved to be the perfect fit. I installed the plugin, connected a Stripe account, and enabled the Stripe Tax feature. That was essentially the entire setup! 

After that, I placed a test order with a Texas billing address. The form automatically detected the customer’s location and added the correct Texas sales tax to the total. Next, I tried an order from Oregon (a state with no sales tax) and the form correctly showed $0 in tax.

The best part? I didn’t have to manually enter a single tax rate or maintain any complex tables. WP Simple Pay worked perfectly straight out-of-the-box.

Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) is my go-to WordPress plugin for selling digital products like ebooks, software, templates, courses, and music.

I’ve included EDD in this roundup because of its built-in tax features, which are designed to handle the unique tax regulations that come with selling digital goods.

My Experience

To test how EDD handles taxes, I built a fictional digital storefront for a self-published novelist who wanted to sell ebooks and audiobooks directly from her WordPress site. The key challenge? A large portion of her readers were in Europe, which meant she needed solid EU VAT compliance.

My Experience

To push the limits of what a form-based tax calculator can do, I built a business tax estimator for a fictional accounting firm. 

My goal was ambitious: clients would enter their revenue, expenses across multiple categories, business structure (LLC, S-Corp, sole proprietor), and state. The calculator would then display their estimated quarterly tax payments, complete with a full breakdown.
