Blueprint is a simple WordPress theme based on the Blueprint CSS Framework. This basic theme has no advanced feature to control the design. however, with the solid Blueprint CSS customization is only limited by your imagination. The set up is simple, just plug and play, customization is possible with just CSS, however, you really need to know the working of both the Blueprint framework as well as designing with CSS to override the existing design, which makes this theme a better starting theme for developers interested in working with Blueprint CSS (current version of wpSnap is based on Blueprint) and want to save time with the basic theme development. Mimbo has gone through 3 versions, from its modest start (featured here) to the current more sophisticated design, warranting a 2nd feature on wpSnap. The theme still have very little customization capabilities, but considering this is just the free version of the premium theme Mimbo Pro the level of customization works well. This work is a good starting theme for developers and a no cost option for those looking for a great theme but working on a budget (free!). Check it out.

Milano is an advanced theme with some cool built in functions that can be used to enhance you sites features. The theme uses a few plugin that are outside the theme, which requires additional steps to set up this otherwise fabulous theme. The theme is highly customizable and options such as design, features, videos and advertisements can be managed from the WP admin panel. Irresistible is a free-premium theme by WooThemes, this advanced theme is highly customizable and comes packed with a whole lot more than any other theme out there. The theme comes ready with numerous color options, custom logo, custom home page, layout, and much more. The theme is well code and optimized and available for free. If you are looking for the paid theme quality without the paid theme price, this is the one for you.

Shades of Blue is one the free 2-column themes offered by StudioPress. This simple looking theme is packed with features and functions to make it a very good starting theme for any development work. The sidebar and the bottom bar are fully widgetized (5 including sidebar) and the navigation is coded for drop-down menus (for sub-pages). Shades of Blue has been developed to accommodate threaded comments and sticky posts. This elegant and clean theme was developed by none other than Brian Gardner. Check it out, grab your copy today!

This theme is one of the simplest to implement shopping cart tool that combines the power of WordPress and the famous e-Commerce plugin into one nifty and practical theme. Aligned for WordPress is a grid-based basic theme based on a Habari Project theme of the same name by Thomas Silkjaer. This theme is ready to plug and play, there is no customization or set up needed. This basic version has 2 columns with content to the left and widget ready sidebar to the right. The theme comes Adsense ready and search engine optimized. Other features include Flickr image, rotating header, nested comments and more. Check it out.

Color Paper is a new graphically rich widget ready theme by Free Theme Layouts commissioned by Smashing Magazine. The theme uses a simple 2 column layout and helps draw attention to the content, one minor tweak we did to accommodate it on this site is to show the first post as a excerpt (which is really not desirable) in order to prevent the post from running into the older posts. Alternatively, all post can be shows as excerpt to make the site look more consistent. The theme has built in options page for some customization. This design will make a great “use as is” theme for any site that is looking for the fastest way to take the site to the next level in terms of looks. Check it out.

Pixeled is an exciting new theme by Sam of samk.ca. The theme is a well style, cleverly coded advanced theme that offers some easy customization. The theme is widget ready with both right sidebars and bottom bars. The theme can be used as is with minimal or no set up. The theme uses one main image which adds to the themes great looks, the theme uses both pages as well as categories for navigation. The innovative style makes it a great starter theme for design projects.

Rusty Grunge is a new basic theme by Chris Wallace. The theme has the classic 2 column layout with content on the left and widget ready sidebar on the right. The coding is simple and the theme is very light weight despite the images. The theme gets its distinct looks from the grungy images, hence the name. The theme works as is with no set up, a must see.

QuickPress is a basic lightweight 3 column theme that packs a punch. The theme is simple and has one large content area and two right sidebars that are widget ready. The header is blue with no images, which reminds one of the K2 theme, but the insides are absolutely contrasting in that this theme is as simple as it gets. The theme serves its purpose well, it is content centric and can be used just as well as a base 3 column theme for design projects. The theme also comes styled to include Google Adsense ads in the sidebar. Check it out.

Transport is a “back-to-basic” but classy theme by EasternWest. This 2 column theme is a cool blend of gray and blue, has a widget ready sidebar and styled to rock. The simple layout actually is helpful in highlighting the content while making a statement of class and good taste. A must have for minimalists; the theme also makes a good stating template for blog design projects.

Zinepress is by far one of the best free magazine style theme out there that can as easily be used as a regular blog theme. This masterpiece from Andrew Lindstrom is built on a simple two and four column platform that fits both blogs and webazines alike. There are a few customization that are a must to make, namely the site name, which is in the form of a PSD and those without Photoshop are out of luck, but other than that the theme can be used as is. The theme is loaded with widgets that help is easy addition of 125px ads as well as conventional widgets. Overall a great theme with greater potential! Desk Space by Dirty Blue Media is a comprehensive theme that has it all, this theme has a simple 2 column layout, but historically, that has proven to be the most common type of web 2 format used and this them only emphasis the power of using such a layout to the fullest. This theme is styled with attention to details and clever usage of graphics and plugins. The theme has a fully integrated WMD comment editor, which helps in adding markup to your comments within having to learn HTML. This theme is best for those who are looking for a no-hassle design and want the focus of the site to be their content. A must see.

As you may have already noticed (unless you are reading this via RSS feeds – in which case please visit the site), wpSnap and wpSnap Blog have both undergone a complete code overhaul and CSS reboot. Our old design was a collection of codes loosely tied with crazy hacks and really only worked half as good as we wanted it to. With this new version, we have identified and eliminated all programmatic issues and cleaned our codes using the next generation conditional coding and built the site around Blueprint CSS framework. With only minimal CSS addition (all in its own stylesheet), this design is built such that newer version of the Blueprint framework can be uploaded to the theme without breaking the design. The work was spearheaded by Sunny (HeadsetOptions.org WP Pro) who occasionally contributed on our site as a guest author.

Since this is not built around any pre-existing theme, it is not available for download.

Carrington is an advanced new theme by Crowd Favorite, a development company founded by Alex King. This theme is a heavy hitter; this masterfully crafted development tool is styled just right to work as a stand alone theme with zero end user customization. The back side of this theme looks complex; it is in reality the contrary. The theme reduces the effort in development, customization and fully realizes the power of WordPress as a CMS. Each element of this 2-3 column theme is well thought through, this is a coder’s dream theme and probably the best and most advanced free theme out there. It comes with an extensive set of “Read Me” files that explains the inner workings of each section of this theme in detail. For now, download, activate and enjoy!

Agregado is a super cool theme created by Darren Hoyt and Matt Dawson with the aim to “preserve the personal website” (as described by Darren himself). This theme (our demo does not justify its full potential- try the one here) is designed to aggregate data from sources like Flickr, Delicious and Twitter, and makes the process of consolidating all your web 2.0 activity a breeze! The set up is simple and the well developed options page makes it even easier. The theme itself has 2 columns with a contact form built right into the home page. Developers can also grab the PSD files from Darren’s site. This theme is one-of-a-kind and I am glad someone invested their time in developing it. Smashing Magazine commissioned this fabulous theme.

Star Press is a clean and well laid out theme! This 3 column theme has it all; two widget ready sidebars and content with Meta included. The theme uses numerous small icons but not much else in terms of graphics. The red color makes it a very vibrant design ideal for entertainment blogs. The simplicity of this theme is what makes it attractive, the ready to use nature makes it easy to install and activate. With practically no set up this is one of the best 3 column themes I have seen lately, grab a copy now!

Vit Dlouhy of Nuvio Template has this amazingly clean and crisp theme called Simply 06. As the name suggests, the theme is simple, but not ordinary. This 2 column theme uses some of the most advanced codes and styling to make the theme work straight out of the box. The theme was ported by ThemeLab and like many of their themes, this one is wonderfully crafted to enhance use experience. The sidebar is widget ready and is available in 10 different shades!

Humidor by designer Evan Eckard is different kind of a theme. It’s a single column theme (all 820px of em) with a 3 column bottom bar. The styling is unique, however, it requires a little bit of work to customize the theme for your site. The header image changes depending on the page type, which brings us to one more issue, the lack of page tabs. Outside of that, the theme is original and well styled. A good layout for redesign and if you are the theme tinkering type, this theme is for you. Check it out!
