This tutorial will show you how to increase the maximum number of RSS widget feed items without using a plugin.

Step 1: Backup the file /wp-includes/default-widgets.php

Use a FTP program like FileZilla, navigate to the path /wp-includes and make a backup of the file default-widgets.php.

Step 2: Edit the file default-widgets.php

Download the file into your hard drive, then use a text-editor program like Notepad or Notepad++ to open it. There are 4 places you need to edit:

1) Lines 803, 897, and 960:

Change

if ( $items < 1 || 20 < $items )

to

if ( $items < 1 || 100 < $items )

2) Line 917:

Change

for ( $i = 1; $i <= 20; ++$i )

to

for ( $i = 1; $i <= 100; ++$i )

Note 1: You can change to as how many items as you want. In this example, I use 100.

Note 2: Depending on the WordPress version, the line numbers may be different. This tutorial uses WordPress version 3.3.1. Alternately, you can press Ctrl + F on the keyboard and search for the text:

$items < 1 || 20

for lines 803, 897, 960, and:

$i <= 20

for line 917.

Step 3: Upload the file back to your server

Now, when you finish editing, save the file and upload it back to your server. Then, login into admin area, go to Appearance > Widgets. Drag a RSS widget into a sidebar and see the change.

There are two common methods:

1.) Simple method – adding Google Custom search JavaScript on your WordPress sidebar as a widget. This does not require any plug-ins or knowledge in PHP.

2.) Template Method – in this method, a dedicated WordPress template page would be created to host Google search results along with ads (if you choose to enable it). This requires some PHP programming knowledge.

Add a Google Custom Search Widget on your WordPress sidebar

Let’s start with the simplest. Follow the steps below:

Step1.) Login to your WordPress administration panel.
Step2.) Go to Appearance – Widgets.
Step3.) Under “Available Widgets”, click and drag “Text” (Arbitrary text or HTML) to your existing sidebar (either “Primary Sidebar” or “Secondary Sidebar” depending on your currently used Theme).

Step4.) Go to this official Google page on custom search widget code.

Step5.) Scroll down on that page and copy that code under “Copy and paste this code snippet into your webpage”. Paste to the blank text widget on Step3.

Step6.) Save changes. This is how it looks like:

In 99% of the cases, you do not need to edit that and it should be fully working.

Template method on integrating Google Custom search

Follow the procedure below:

Step1.) Using your favourite PHP editor or any code editor such as Notepad ++, create a blank empty file where you can write a PHP code for your search result. Save it as: searchresultpages.php

Step2.) On top of the code, paste this one:

Step3.)Bear in mind that you need to determine the absolute server path to your wp-load.php. This file can be found in your WordPress root directory (where index.php and wp-config.php are usually found). To do this, follow the steps outlined here.

This is an example result:

The path shown is as:

/home/phpdevel/public_html/absolutepath.php

This means that the path to your wp-load.php is (removing absolutepath.php):

/home/phpdevel/public_html/wp-load.php

Finally the lines of code previously would be updated to:

The code above instructs WordPress to be loaded (because of wp-load.php) and then load the WordPress template header (in header.php where your CSS, JavaScript, title tag, etc. are found).

Step4.) Now that your WordPress header codes are instructed to be loaded with those first lines of PHP code, you can then instruct to load the rest (sidebar, footer and your Google custom search code). You will not be loading any text content such as your WordPress post content and this should be removed from the template.

To complete this step, login to your WordPress administration panel and then go to Appearance – Editor and click your post template (usually named as post.php in most WordPress themes). Copy it to a blank text editor (do not edit it online!).

Supposing this is your existing WordPress post template:

Only one important variable that you need to tweak is the googleSearchFrameWidth, you need to measure the content width of your template. Make some allowance, if the post body width is 730px, you can set to 700px as shown in the above example and the screenshot below:

Step7.) The last step would be adding the form search box code. This is up to you where you would like to add the code. For usability reasons, you need to add it on the above the fold region of your template where users can easily see. It is recommended you add the form below as a sidebar widget, which is fairly easy to integrate in most WordPress themes. Simply use the one below:

You need to replace the form action URL with the correct URL by changing the domain name. Also these lines:

Are important only if you are an AdSense publisher and would be displaying ads in your search result; you can remove that if you do not want to display ads.

Step8.) Finally upload searchresultpages.php in your WordPress root directory. Also before testing make sure the Google custom search form box has already been added to your site.

You can see a working demo of the Google custom search implementation using template method in this site. Template method is very flexible because if you do not want to show sidebar (or other components) in your search result pages (to avoid clutter) then you can simply remove:

In some cases, you might need to tweak further the code suggested to perfectly fit within your site theme.

Title Tag Fix on Search Result Pages

You might notice that the title tag is the name of your blog or site. Download your existing theme header.php file and backup it first. Then you can fix it as follows:

You need to put that code in header.php. It works by PHP detecting the search result page URL. If it is true, it would display the proper search result title otherwise it will run the existing WordPress title tag PHP code.

1. Identify

The preliminary step is to identify whether your website is being compromised. It would be clear if we have such indications. Few examples if your website has been compromised:

• Suspicious action or activity i.e. unknown page/post being created or an unknown user being created
• Message from Google Webmaster central saying that your website maybe harmful
• Your front page being compromised or replace with a splash image as below:

2. Backup Content

Back up the content of your website using the WordPress export tool (Dashboard > Tools > Export).

Note: Remove the unknown post or page being created before exporting the content.

Remember to also backup the settings for your plugin and theme if they have it.

3. Plugins and Theme (Optional)

List down the plugin list that you use. Remember that you will need to re-install this plugin again by downloading the new plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory. Ensure that you have the updated version.

Below is an indication that the plugin that you use has an update.

Note: If you are cautious about the plugin update, read the plugin upgrade log  to know whether it is compatible with your WordPress version, server setting or does it fix any security issues.

With regards to the theme, ideally we will need a new theme file. Basically:

• If you have a backup of theme files prior to the website issue, you could use it. If not, you could use the theme on the staging server prior to your website launch.
• If you are using theme from other company or developer, ensure you get a new and updated version if available.

Both of the plugin and theme steps above are used to ensure that we have a new clean installation of your website.

4. Create new WordPress installation

As the step suggest, we need a new installation. Kindly note that if possible, you should:

• Create a username and password for your database
• Create a new table for your WordPress installation

5. Load the content, plugins and theme

After finished the new installation. Below is the ideal step to easily ensure your website is restored as similar to the old site.

• Step 1: Install the new theme
• Step 2: Install the plugin from the list your created previously. Ideally using the Install Plugin features from the backend. http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/plugin-install.php
• Step 3: Load the content by using the Import Tool (Dashboard > Tools > Import)
• Step 4: Load the plugin and theme settings (if applicable)

6. Install security plugins

In order to ensure you have adequate security level, plugin like Secure WordPress will help you to identify the area which need attention.

7. Create a backup and restore point on the server

And if your hosting provide allow, you could ask them to back and create a restore point of your website on the server. If you host with WPWebHost, just email the support team and they will take care of all your worries.

WampServer is an open source web development platform on Windows. It allows you to create web applications with Apache2, PHP and a MySQL database.WampServer consists these software: Apache, MySQL and PHP/phpMyAdmin.

Why to install WordPress on WampServer?

WordPress is a popular choice today for people to create websites because of its user-friendliness and powerful features. But, Installing WordPress on your hosting directly and getting along with it can be a tough process. Also, you need to test your website, theme, etc to rest assure that it will not crash on the live server. So, to do this task, we setup a WampServer (which has all the basic requirements to install Worpdress), install WordPress on WampServer and then test our website before its final launch. Also, you get hand-to-hand experience with WordPress.

1~ Download setup files

1. Download ‘WampServer’ from its download page: http://www.wampserver.com/en/#download-wrapper
2. Download ‘Worpdress’ from its download page: https://wordpress.org/download/

2~ Install WampServer

Lets install WampServer on your Windows. Just follow the simple six steps visual procedure:
(Though, WampServer 2.2a was used for this tutorial, you will find it helpful for any version of WampServer.)

NOTE: I will suggest not to change the names I’ve used in the tutorial, else you can find yourself in trouble. Please only change names if you’re sure you can keep up with the changes.

1. Start the setup by opening the file you downloaded in step 1 of downloading setup files.

2. Accept the agreement and Click ‘Next’ button.

3. Select your installation folder and click ‘Next’. I will recommend you to leave it as it is.

4. Select extra icons (if you want to have shortcut icons) and click ‘Next’.

5. Click ‘Install’.

6. WampServer setup completed. Click ‘Finish’.

3~ Install WordPress on WampServer

After you’ve installed WampServer, follow these steps to install WordPress on WampServer:
(Though, WordPress 3.3.1 was used for this tutorial, you will find it helpful for any version of WordPress.)

NOTE: I will suggest not to change the names I’ve used in the tutorial, else you can find yourself in trouble. Please only change names if you’re sure you can keep up with the changes.

1. Goto Computer -> C:drive There you will see a folder named ‘wamp’.

2. Open wamp -> www

3. Create a new folder here, named ‘testsite’ (without quotes). You can keep any name but note it down as it’s your site name and replace ‘testsite’ with your chosen name when it is used in upcoming steps.

4. Now, goto the WordPress setup file (which you downloaded in step 2 of downloading files). Open the zip file named ‘wordpress-3.3.1.zip’ (your’s filename can be changed because of different WordPress version), open folder named ‘wordpress’ and copy/extract its contents to our newly created folder ‘testsite’ [or the name you gave] (created in above step 3 of installing WordPress).

5. Till time, your site folder ‘testsite’ should look like this:

6. Open Start menu -> All programs -> WampServer and click ‘Start WampServer’.
Click ‘Yes’ on any UAC dialog window shown. Now, WampServer will be running on your system and you can see its icon in notification area.

7. Lets confirm your WampServer is working properly. Open your browser (I prefer Firefox as Internet Explorer loads slowly) and type ‘localhost’ (without quotes) in the address/location bar. You will see this page:

8. Click ‘phpmyadmin’ under Tools section.

9. Click ‘Databases’.

10. Type ‘testsitesql’ (without quotes) in the text box below Databases and click create. MySQL database for your WordPress site on WampServer is ready.

11. Type ‘localhost/testsite’ (without quotes) in the location bar of your browser. You will see this:

12. Click on ‘Create Configuration file’ button.

13. Click on ‘Let’s go’ button.
Enter ‘testsitesql’ as Database name and ‘root’ as username. Make Password box blank (you don’t need to write any password for MySQL database). And leave rest two fields intact. Now, click on ‘Submit’ button.

14. Click on ‘Run the Install’.

15. Enter your site name, username, password, email, etc. and click on ‘Install WordPress’ button.

16. Now, you’re almost done. You will see the success message. Click on ‘Log In’ button.

17. Enter your chosen username and password (which you chose in step 15) and click ‘Log In’ button.

18. Bravo! WordPress installation is finally complete. You’ve successfully login in WordPress on your WampServer. You will see the welcome message.
