Beauty Secrets Victorian Day Spa is an oasis from daily stress that is located in Pearl River. It offers people multiple relaxing spa package services and a chance to get pampered by the attentive, friendly staff. The owner, Yvonne Schweizer, was born and raised in Pearl River and her grandfather used to own Schweizer’s Beautiful Flowers, which kept her family name even after it changed ownership. She created a very welcoming atmosphere that starts with her own enthusiasm for the spa which her loyal customers feed off of. Some clients view Beauty Secrets as the “best kept secret in the county,” due to the fact that it is located in a part of Pearl River that is “off the beaten path,” said Ms. Schweizer.

Ever since she was five years old Yvonne Schweizer has wanted to be a hair dresser and she never grew out of a desire to make people look and feel better about their appearance. She got her cosmetology license right out of high school and has been honing her craft in services like facials, waxing, eyelash curling and tinting ever since.

Beauty Secrets has a staff that enjoys their work as much as Schweizer does and they have created a fun atmosphere for their clients. “I feel blessed with my staff and the girls that work here have been here for years,” she said. She even tells the women that work there that if there comes a time when they do not enjoy coming to work anymore, then they should think about leaving. The customers at Beauty Secrets “might go to other places for certain things like waxing but they always come back,” said Ms. Schweizer.

Ms. Schweitzer did not want the Beauty Secrets Victorian Day Spa to have a clinical feel to it so its interior is designed in a traditional, quaint dŽcor with soft colors and antique furniture. The warmth of the dŽcor reflects the feeling of being at a home away from home, only a lot more relaxing. The clients at Beauty Secrets feel like they “haven’t left their own living room,” said Ms. Schweitzer. It makes sense to want to be in a comfortable, non-clinical environment when getting a Brazilian wax done, which is one of the many services Beauty Secrets is known for. Ms. Schweizer makes a point of not pushing a lot of products on her customers and doesn’t carry a big product line. She keeps her “prices reasonable so people can come back multiple times a year,” Schweizer said. The staff at Beauty Secrets knows that the customers at Beauty Secrets are there to feel pampered and every service they receive is done with luxury in mind.

There is a family-friendly environment at Beauty Secrets and the staff makes customers feel like they are part of the family. “You’ll never feel like you’re on an assembly line,” said Ms. Schweizer. When clients come in for services, they will often finish conversations with the staff that they left off from on their last appointment a month earlier. Occasionally, women will rent out the space for bridal parties and enjoy the services while relaxing at the spa.

“There’s nothing like a pedicure.” This statement by Ms. Schweizer has probably been echoed by countless women over the years. But, for the women in Rockland County it seems like there’s nothing like a pedicure at Beauty Secrets. I don’t think the secret will last.

Giulio’s Restaurant offers a Continental menu with an eclectic flare, featuring market fresh ingredients and a menu that changes with the seasons. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian, built in the 1880′s and located in Historic Tappan, New York, just minutes from Bergen County. Executive Chef Nick Hoops graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY and since graduation has been steadily employed in the food service and hospitality industry. He has held a variety of jobs as he worked his way from Sous Chef to Chef d’Cuisine to Executive Chef. He has worked in NY, NJ, Hawaii and California, as well as in his home country of Germany. Nick also carries recipes with him passed down from his father, also a chef, including his famous Onion Soup which is currently on the menu. Co-owned by brothers Michael Fasciano, a self-employed structural engineer and Anthony Fasciano, an endodontist in Bergen County, this Rockland county gem boasts a beautiful oak center staircase and two working fireplaces. The inspiration for purchasing the restaurant was Michael’s now six year old daughter who was diagnosed with cancer just after her first birthday. Early on Elizabeth had established her love of pizza (which she would easily eat three or more times a day if allowed) so it became a mission for Michael to provide a place for her to always have a place to have pizza, which further inspired the selection of flatbread pizzas. Elizabeth and her two younger sisters Mary and Anna often come to the restaurant to visit with Daddy or their uncle. With a choice of five dining rooms, Giulio’s can accommodate small intimate parties or larger parties up to 70 guests in the Main Dining Room. For more details or information about upcoming events visit the website at www.giulios.biz. 154 Washington_Street, Tappan, NY 845-359-3657 www.giulios.biz

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we can all think about the different ways to share our love. One of the best ways to do that is to adopt a dog or cat, who has been rescued. The Ruina family of New City, has been showing their love for animals by adopting or caring for stray and rescued dogs, over the last few years. The newest additions to their home in New City are “Murray,” an Akita mix, with them for 8 years, and “Jack”, the “little” Dachshund. Jack was rescued just in time…he was in a shelter that euthanizes dogs who are not adopted after a set amount of time. “In Our Hands Rescue” (www.inourhandsrescue.org) was the organization that located Jack.

Karen Graviano devotes a lot of her time to rescuing cats in need. Her work at The Vet at the Barn, located in Chestnut Ridge, gives her the unique opportunity of hearing about cats who are in need or who are strayed. When people need to find their cat and can’t, they call Karen Graviano. Karen devotes a lot of her own time rescuing cats in need. She started really getting involved about 5 years ago. She works for the Vet at the Barn, in Chestnut Ridge NY, and while they are not in the rescue business, they will not turn away an animal in need. Bill was an 18 year old cat who was unable to stay with his owner; a college student attending school in Arizona, who moved to a different dorm and was not able to take Bill, who had grown up with her. There was nowhere else for Bill to go, so he was brought to Karen who rescued him and was successfully adopted about a week later. He is happy in his new home and doing well.

In 2009, she joined petfinder.com, an internet service that connects people to different resources for rescue, adoption, foster care of pets, with her own service, Divine Felines Inc. (divinefelines.petfinder.com), (also available on facebook.com). It is an organization that places homeless/unwanted cats, kittens and small animals in new homes. Karen also helps by running the adoption center at PetSmart in Monroe. Starting out in Nanuet, she moved the program to the newer Monroe store. She runs the center each month, to help get cats that have been rescued by several organizations, including Hi Tor Animal, in Pomona, in addition to people looking for help with strays on the internet. Over the last 3 years, she has been able to find adoptive homes for over 500 cats.People call on Karen when they have lost their cats…there was a family barbeque celebrating Father’s Day when they discovered a cat stuck up a very tall tree. It was so tall that the local fire department would have had to use a cherry picker truck to reach. Karen went to the scene and climbed on top of her car to get a close look. The cat was crying and meowing and obviously scared. She was able to coax him down and he was brought to Hi Tor for shelter. Then there was the cat who became lost when his owners were busy moving out of their home in Kingston NY, due to foreclosure. When he went missing, the owners called Karen for help. They had looked and looked before finally moving to the state of Florida. Karen made the hour-long drive to Kingston to look for him. It had snowed, so it was not going to be easy! Finally, she found him, hiding in a shed. He was scared, cold, crying and starving. She rescued him and contacted the owners. It was Christmas time and when she called them to tell them that she found him, she told them that it was a “Meowy Christmas”!

She also learned that Loki had been missing for 6 weeks before they called her! They were grateful and happy at the news, but unable to arrange the airfare for him to travel to Florida. Loki was the lucky one who Karen adopted and he is very happy in his new home.

Phyllis & Joe Trefurt take “animal magnetism” to a whole new level! Over the last few years, many stray cats seemed to make their way to the Trefurt home in West Nyack. Maybe the cats have heard about the way that Phyllis takes care of them and helps with the rescue and adoption of them. As the cats seem to come out of nowhere, Phyllis takes care of them by feeding them, giving them shelter (she once gave a stray mother cat, along with her kittens, a heated bed in her garage until she could arrange for their rescue) and of course affection. She works closely with the Hudson Valley Humane Society to help the strays get the care they need and the homes that they deserve. Phyllis & Joe have arranged the rescue or have donated about 20 strays that found their way to the Trefurt home in the last few years. While they bring the strays that appear, seemingly out of nowhere, 2 cats, “Gracie” and “Felix” were the ones that really touched Phyllis’ heart and they decided to adopt them. Gracie was rescued by the Trefurt’s when she was just 5 weeks old, from Hi-Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona. She is now 5 years old and is a pretty cat with a gentle disposition. Felix, with his “tuxedo styled” black and white fur came to them 2 years ago, from the Hudson Valley Humane Society. He had been abandoned in a foreclosed house and was very skittish and depressed when they found him. Felix is now 3 years old and is the perfect addition to the household. Phyllis continues helping the strays that appear at her home, and also in the community. Raising awareness to the plight of stray cats and animals is a priority for her. The shelters and agencies that are in the community must depend on donations of time, money and of course, love. Any donation is appreciated and goes to a great cause.

Helping Hands: Ellen Hansen of Hi-Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona

Hi-Tor is the only animal shelter in Rockland County. Their mission is to take in any stray animals who have been domesticated – cats, dogs, birds and others. They even took in some chickens, too! The chickens were being transported to an upstate location when they fell off of the truck they were riding in. Thanks to volunteer rescuers, they were saved and brought to live on a farm. This is what Hi-Tor is all about…rescue. From its beginnings, Hi-Tor was strictly an animal control facility. It was a place where stray animals were routinely brought to and either adopted out or euthanized, after only being there for about a week. When Vivian Kiggans, the new Executive Director of Hi-Tor stepped in, the policy changed for the first time in over 35 years. The new policy is all about adoption. They will do everything possible to adopt a pet out and will not euthanize unless the animal is severely injured or ill. They will house, try to locate owners and arrange for foster care for them until they can be adopted. Under the new administration, 2 new programs have been implemented to foster the adoption process. First, there is a monthly, New Volunteer Orientation that covers new volunteers who want to come to the shelter to help with the care of the animals. They receive guidelines and training on everything they need to know to care for a pet such as the handling, caring, socialization, walking and feeding of the animals. The other new program, the Foster Program, will train applicants who are volunteering to open their homes to fostering an abandoned pet. They too will be trained to handle the needs of the animal, from bottle feeding the babies, medical care and every other aspect pertaining to the animal in need. The shelter relies on the knowledge, compassion and commitment of its Board of Directors. Ellen Hansen has been on the Board of Directors for the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center the last 6 years. She has many stories of rescues, and she has first-hand experience too. She has opened her home to strayed animals. Ellen is also a foster volunteer for boston terriers, through a different rescue organization. There are so many animals that have been lost, abandoned or simply thrown away, that you can pick which breed you would be interested in fostering. Kiwi, a Boston terrier, was born with many congenital medical issues and was starving when she was rescued from a backyard breeder by a concerned neighbor. She was brought to a veterinarian’s office who turned her over to Hi Tor. Ellen fostered Kiwi who was unable to pull through her health issues. A baby terrier, Bertha, was found wandering the streets of New Jersey when animal control rescued her. Ellen also fostered Bertha and ultimately fell in love with her and adopted her. Sneaky was found in a trash dumpster when she was found. Ellen also brought her in to and she was also successfully adopted out. Of all the dogs that Ellen has fostered, she adopted 4 that continue to live with her – Bertha, Thor, Hank and Bubble. Hi-Tor relies on donations to cover the cost of the care for the animals. Most of the cost is due to medical care for them to be examined, have shots administered, insert micro-chip, spaying and neutering and any other medical care necessary for their well-being. To adopt, there is an application and screening process required, and there is a fee to help cover the medical care. The fee also includes a state license. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Hi-Tor Animal Care Center at www.hitor.org, or call: 845 354-7900
