Equity in Education: Celebrating 40 Years of Title IX
Thursday, April 19, 2012 3:00 to 5:00 pm
Panel Discussion, reception to follow
Hendrix Auditorium, William D. Carlson Education Building (CEB)

This event looks back at the progress and challenges of the forty years since Title IX passed in 1972. While Title IX is widely known as the law supporting women’s athletic teams, the legislation also dramatically improved the experiences of all women in education. Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and all activities that receive federal financial assistance. Some of the forms of discrimination that Title IX prohibits include sexual harassment, the failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics, and discrimination based on pregnancy. In 1972, before Title IX, women earned less than ten percent of law and medical degrees, and just 13% of doctoral degrees. Today, women earn nearly half of all law and medical degrees, and over half of all doctoral degrees.

The panelists will examine the impact of Title IX, its history, and its continued relevance. The speakers have a range of experiences in university administration, athletics, education, and the sciences.

The event is sponsored by the UNLV College of Education, the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada, Office of Diversity Initiatives, the Women’s Council, Intercollegiate Athletics, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, and the Nevada Humanities.

Please click here for a map of UNLV showing the auditorium and nearby parking.

We know much about the men who built and operated the casinos of Las Vegas. In this talk, Dr. Susan Chandler, Professor of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno explores the untold stories of women who work in the gaming industry. Chandler’s presentation offers a new slant on the dependence of Las Vegas’ (and Nevada’s) economy on women workers.

Based on ten years of interviews with women — maids, cocktail waitresses, cooks, laundry workers, dealers, pit bosses, and vice presidents– Chandler will discuss in detail the attractions to, experiences with, and critiques of the state’s primary economic machine from her subjects’ perspectives. Some of the areas for discussion include 1) the entry into casino employment, 2) the persistence of gender-typed jobs despite equal employment laws, 3) women’s coping strategies in a sexualized work place, 4) the pivotal role of the culinary union for many workers, and 5) how thousands of remarkable women assert their humanity in the face of gaming empires’ relentless quest for profits.

The event is free and open to the public.

Co-sponsors: University Forum Lecture Series, Women’s Research Institute of Nevada, Departments of History and Sociology, School of Social Work, the Women’s Studies Program, and Bo Bernhard.

Please join us at the lecture by Dr. Susan Chandler on Feb. 21, 7:30 pm at the Marjorie Barrick Auditorium at UNLV.

WRIN is thrilled to offer its second installment of our HISTORY 495 Course. Seats are limited and registration is nearing the Fall 2011 Deadline.

This course explores the diversity of approaches to women’s civic and democratic leadership as practiced by women over the twentieth-century in the United States. At the center of the course rests the question: why and how have women risen to become change makers and leaders? In addressing that question, the class focuses on differences among leadership styles, arenas of leadership, diverse communities, and the skills needed whether pursuing social change or career advancement. While addressing the changes in women’s lives in the twentieth century, the course also introduces students to contemporary women who have become leaders in their communities.

Please register by August 5, 2011.
