Nicholas Hayek is no more

Nicholas Hayek Aka Mr. Swatch, the animated man behind the Swatch Group, the world largest wristwatch company that single handedly saved the Swiss watch industry is no more. He passed away while at work. The Swatch Group brand stable includes such brands as Breguet, Blancpain, Calvin Klein, Certina, Endura, Flik Flak, Jaquet Droz, Glashutte Original and Union Glashutte, Hamilton, Leon Hatot, Longines, Mido, Omega, Pierre Balmain, Rado, Swatch, Tiffany and Co. and Tissot among others.

Many people don’t know that when you purchase a watch from new it’s actually a sealed unit. The head part of the watch which contains the movement and dial usually in most cases has a small rubber gasket on the case back. The actual rubber gasket can vary in thickness diameter from 0.30mm to 1.8mm. It’s important that the gasket fits correctly or you might find the case back will not fit or a gap appears.

The reason for the gasket is not only to stop water entering the watch but also to prevent dirt and dust. A watch movement is comprised from a number of individual parts which all work together.  Any foreign objects get inside can quite easily stop these parts; some of the part are approximately 0.10mm and connect to other part using teeth on the wheel. If any foreign objects get inside this usually causes further repairs.

The actual seal is covered in a silicone gel which helps create a tight seal. The seal can prolong the life of the watch and also the battery. Usually only specialist watch repair companies carry out a reseal.

The watch features an automatic ML (Maurice Lacroix) calibre 122 in-house model which is patent pending  for hour, minute, and moon indicator. The watch is housed within a titanium case with sand blast finish with a unique coating to prevent fingerprint marking. It measures 45mm with an AR sapphire coated crystal.

It’s been recently confirmed that Tag Heuer will honour Tiger Woods despite what has happened in the past months. The President and CEO of TAG Heuer Jean-Christophe Babin, has issued a statement explaining that they’ll reduce the amount of use of his images in certain markets for a period of time.

On another note Tag Heuer will continue to support the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Movement is the automatic Zenith in-house caliber 689, COSC-certified as a chronometer. It has 31 jewels, beating at 28,800 bph and with a power reserve of 50 hours. This ultra-thin movement measures 25mm x 4mm, and is composed of 146 parts. The rotor is 22kt gold. Limited to just 100 pieces/

The case, in 18kt rose gold, measures 40mm. It has double AR-coated sapphire crystals and is water resistant to 30 meters. The hands and indeces are 18kt gold.

Cartier has created a concept watch that after its manufacture and assembly, requires no further adjustments, ever.

This is due to an innovative use of materials and technology. The watch is housed in a Ballon Bleu case that measures 46mm. It is made of an alloy of Niobium-Titanium (Nb-Ti).

The concept of the Cartier ID One is to avoid ever having to service or adjust the hairspring, the balance wheel or the pallet fork, which in normal watches are the most “serviced” parts of a mechanical movement.

Whilst this is a concept watch, the materials and technology used will eventually be found in the brand’s models.
