Help me Publish a Book to Help YOU!

Hi everybody! Sorry that I have been neglecting this blog. I intend to remedy that this year. I haven't just been lazy-- been doing a lot of writing work and online marketing for companies, and also writing at my Wordpress blog, Write and Get Paid! So check it out...there is a lot of new information to be found there!

Now, about that book....Publishing a book of my own is one major goal I have for my life. Up to this point, I have ghostwritten lots of books, but my very own book has only been a dream. When I worked for someone else full-time, I never had time to do it, and now that I actually do WriteandGetPaid for myself, I do have the time to work on it– but putting together the seed money to get started has been an issue. I've learned so much about writing, blogging, and online marketing, and how all of it ties together, in the last five years. Finding the time to share what I've learned with all of you has been a problem. If only there were no bills to pay..*sigh* and my big yellow dog did not like to eat:) However, we all know that is just life!

Self-publishing pitfalls...Upfront costs involved with hiring someone to design the book cover and do other design work, paying a professional to proofread and edit, paying someone with great techie skills to convert the completed work into a mobile digital format, printing and binding costs all will be paid before one copy is printed. Another huge expense is setting up and funding the marketing campaign that will sell both digital and physical versions of the book. After all, what good does writing a book to help folks do, if no one knows it exists? This book will be a major extension of what I have begun with this blog, and my other one… help writers learn where to find work, how to get started, how to build a portfolio, and how to actually make a good living with your work. The tentative title will be How to Write and Get Paid!

So, here is where you can help!

I recently came across a platform, Kickstarter, designed specifically to help fund projects in many different categories. It is pretty cool– people put information about their project up, along with rewards for the awesome folks that support each of the projects so that they become realities!

Looking for an additional writing source where you can make some steady money? I am continually searching for sites where writers, even those who are just beginning, can write and make money. These sites are great "fillers" for those times when your other work is lacking.

Experts123.com is fairly easy to deal with. There is an online application which includes submitting a sample article for their review. I submitted an application and sample article Monday afternoon, May 10th, and less than 12 hours later, the application was approved.

Per the approval letter I received, "All contributors start with revenue share articles and answers only. Quality contributors are quickly upgraded to WFH (Work for Hire) Status." However, when I logged in to the site, I was pleasantly surprised to see that in reality, I'd already been approved for all of the types of work available through the site.

Equally as pleasing, I chose my current limit of articles, one of the WFH articles and two revenue share articles about things that I was knowledgeable about and submitted them late Tuesday night. The revenue share articles are typically answers to questions, and need only be a minimum of 250 words, and the WFH articles I've seen so far are a minimum of 350 words. They were quick and easy to write, without lengthy research required, and best of all they have all been approved and published today, in much less than 24 hours.

You won't get rich writing articles for Easy123; the pay for WFH articles is between $8-$20, with most of them paying in the $10-12 range. Also, it will take a little time to work up to the point where you're allowed several of the WFH articles to work on at once. However, I wrote three articles in under an hour- so that isn't bad if you equate it to an hourly rate. They pay once a month, the first week of the month, for those articles approved and published by the end of the preceding month.

Since I've been trying to increase my revenue share articles that I write, intending to build up my residual income, I really like Experts123's format- I can pick up some upfront money on some articles and also residual money on others.

Experts123 also is looking for Expert Writers in certain areas, aiming to build up those niche areas. Once you are an approved writer with the site, you can apply in your chosen area of expertise. (Still waiting to hear about mine, but it's just been two days.)

All in all, I would give Experts123 a "B".... the only thing they need to get to an "A" is higher levels of pay and more frequent pay:)

Got Grammar?

When writing for a living, your grammar really isn't important-- unless it's bad! Have you ever tried to read an article in print or online with terrible grammar? It's almost impossible to read through it and understand the meaning of the words when they are horribly jumbled.

The people and clients that you write for will notice if you have spelling or grammar issues, so brushing up on your grammar before taking on work might be to your benefit. You want to impress people with what you know, and how you say it!

Daily Writing Tips is a great site to brush up on your skills, and it even includes spelling, vocabulary, and grammar tests. When you submit your work to a client, be certain they see what a good and witty writer you are, not that you don't know the difference between 'there' and 'their'.

What is Bum Marketing?

Bum Marketing, quite simply, is promoting another marketer’s websites by writing articles on a niche topic and submitting them to article directories.

The article directories let you place a signature or author resource box at the end of each article you submit where you can put a live link to a website or specific product you are promoting. The search engines will pick up the links and help the website or product you’re promoting to increase its Google page rank, as well as drive your traffic directly to the site- a win, win situation for all.

One note: you will need to purchase some top-level domain names to redirect to your affiliates, as most article directories do not allow affiliate links in the resource boxes or articles. You can purchase .info domain names for $1 per year, so they are the most cost effective.

Pick a niche—better yet, pick several niches and diversify. Even though a product looks like a winner, you won’t know that until you promote it and see what kind of action it gets.

Then pick a product for each niche you’ve selected. These products will be what you promote, and you will link your articles about related things to. You can find products to promote by joining some affiliate websites, unless you already have a product of your own—then by all means, promote that! Clickbank is the biggest affiliate website, but there is lots of competition there, so look into others like Commission Junction also.

Pick the best keywords to promote your product and be sure to sprinkle them through your articles.

Next, research your topics and write your articles. Make sure that some of your keywords are in the title, once or twice in the first paragraph, and the last paragraph. Write good, compelling articles that people will read from start to finish- often just making an article “10 tips on….” or something similar will get them to the end. You want them to be interested in what you’ve written, and want to find more. (This is where your links come in….)

Write many, many short, good articles—they don’t have to perfect, and the ideal length is 300-400 words. The more articles you write, the more successful this method will be. The true key to success is how effective your signature, or bio box is. Write this carefully, because it is where you link to your site, or promote your chosen product. On those article directories where you cannot use affiliate links, you’ll need a presell page instead, like a blog.

Post your articles to directories that have higher page ranks – you want to only post on PR 3 or higher pages. This gives it a head start in popularity, as articles theoretically inherit a portion of the search engine ranking from the site where it’s posted.

If you’ve followed these steps well, you should begin seeing some money coming in from the affiliate products you have promoted. Obviously, if you write 50 articles for four different products, and one of them outperforms the others, you’ll know how to tweak your efforts for greater profit. The good thing about this method is that your articles will be read, and people will buy the products long after you’ve written the articles. I know of one person who wrote 500 articles over five years ago who still receives about $5,000 in annual income from those articles to this day.Not bad residual income for work done long ago!

Successful Blogging In Just 7 Simple Steps

You’ve decided to blog. Wonderful!

After a few posts, sit back, and ask yourself these questions:

1.) Why am I blogging? To create an author platform.

2.) What am I hoping to gain from blogging?Followers (potential buyers) that will revisit my site.

3.) Who am I targeting for a viewing audience? People who are interested in my genre.

To *Conquer All Obstacles* let’s assume blogging is a learned skill. Here are 7 Steps to help perfect your blogging skill:

#1 – How’s that title working for you? A headline has less than a second of a site visitor’s attention so it better be compelling. The title must catch the viewer’s attention and draw them into the rest of your post. Is your title short, worded to benefit the reader?

#2 – Include a picture. Images will hold the viewer a tad longer than a page filled with straight information.

#3 – Break up the information. Include subtitles or highlighted bold key words so the viewer just needs to scan and has the option to stop and absorb. Again, KISS – Simple is better.

#4 – Let your voice ring true. Show yourself—that you’re human. Conversational or informal language is more receptive and will hook your audience. Share experiences, interesting information to show credible authority; but also, include the odd error or mistake you’ve made in the past. Can you open yourself to show vulnerability? Transparency works wonders—draws attention, gains trustworthiness, and gathers true friends. Don’t forget to display a photo of yourself. Our brains are wired to create relationships with faces.

#5 – Chosen topic. To decide on the area or content for your article…research through past stats to check where your audience lingers the most, what topics have the greatest hits, and which posts gathered the highest number of comments. But don’t let that stop you from taking a chance. Slip in just one post and waiver from the usual and see what happens. Adding flavor doesn’t hurt. And you never know, another door may open.

#6 – Put your best stuff up top. Did you know the top of the page get about 17 times more exposure than the areas near the bottom of the page? If 40%-50% of the viewers leave your blog after the first page, take your best first step forward. Don’t leave the best for last. Think of this as a sprint instead of a long distance race. Present the best information first and in a tight manner.

#7- Presentation is everything. My husband hates when I say this, but it’s true. First impressions are longing impressions. A site that is simple to navigate and read will attract viewers. I’ve discovered reading through several subjective comments from site reviewers that most readers do not like music, flashy pictures, and wallpapered backgrounds. Again, KISS is the key ingredient to an attractive site.

Again, ask yourself…what is the purpose of your blog? If you’ve designed your blog to build an audience, you must serve the viewers. Now the blogging isn’t about you, it’s about them. It’s time to post your next posts and read your content through their eyes.

Upfront Payment Writing Sites

There are literally hundreds of sites where you can publish your articles, and most of them will pay you based on the number of page views your articles get. So, it is important to drive traffic to your articles, as well as to write on topics which get a lot of natural traffic to get the most page views.

There are also a number of sites which will pay you a flat fee for your articles. Some of them will pay both an upfront fee and also residuals, and others just the upfront fee. (Some of these sites will require experience and approval by the site before allowing you to write for them.) Here are a few of the best sites for upfront payments:

Helium: Helium has a starred writing and rating system, and standard upfront payments are figured using that system. One writing star earns $.50 per article, and five writing stars will net you $2.50. There are also bonuses, like writing to empty titles. You also earn a portion of the site's ad revenue, based on how often your articles are viewed. Helium has constant writing contests which you are free to join, and pay out up to $100 for the winner. Helium also has a segment called the Marketplace, which is where companies post articles they need immediately and what they are willing to pay, and it can be up to $200. Write to that title, and if your article is chosen, you receive the amount offered. If not, your article transitions to Helium, and earns you upfront payment as well as residuals.
Associated Content: AC offers performance payments starting at $1.50 per 1000 page views, and going up to $2.00 per 1000 page views. You can submit your articles for upfront payments. With AC, you have to wait for an offer on your article, which is generally between $3 and $25, and then decide to accept or decline the offer. Be advised that you are relinquishing your rights to your articles at that point, but that you do receive residual performance payments as well.
Demand Studios: Demand Studios offers $15 per article written to their very precise guidelines. You also must be an experienced writer- the approval process to be hired by them is pretty strict. You must send a resume as well as several sample articles for their approval before you can submit anything. Many very experienced writers get frustrated with the copy editors, so a thicker skin is required. Worst case, if an article is rejected by DS, you can sell it to another site like AC.
Textbroker: Textbroker requires that you submit a writing sample to get approved for their site, and your test article will be reviewed and assigned a writing level. The level that you achieve is how you are paid- ranging from 2 stars ($3.50 per 500 word article) to 5 stars ($25.00 per article.) Once you've written for different clients, you can set the amount you wish to be paid and take Direct Orders from those clients willing to pay your fees.
SEED: SEED is owned by AOL, and writers can pick assignments that will end up on various AOL sites. The upfront payments can be as much as $200 for an article, but most of them are in the $30 range. The downside to SEED is that they allow multiple contributors to write to each title, and they may or not purchase multiple articles. Once you submit an article, it will take them five to seven days to edit, and let you know if they are purchasing the article from you.

Knowledge

There’s no excuse for ignorance. Before you begin writing take the time to learn everything you can about this business to determine whether or not it’s for you. Research rates, the types of opportunities and how to land those opportunities. Learn how to query or create a sale pitch and to present yourself in the best light possible.

Love

Love what you do. The freelancers who are only going through the motions are the ones who don’t last.

Marketing

How do you market yourself as a freelance writer? What do you do to teach others about you and your business? Thanks to the Internet, there are plenty of opportunities for writers to market themselves using blogs, ebooks and more. However, there are also offline marketing opportunities at conferences, networking events and seminars. Print up business cards and brochures or launch a website. The possibilities abound.

Networking

Everyone has the potential to become a client. Networking both online and offline is important for all freelancers. Meet people, you never know when they’ll want to hire you.

Options

Freelancing is all about choices. Make the choices that work best for you and your situation. Find the writing YOU want to do and make it work.

Passion

Make no mistake, passion is important. If you love what you do, your passion will show through. If you love what you write, your readers will feel it. Writing every day without passion will only lead to burnout.

Query

A successful query can land some tasty gigs. Learn how to write a query that sells, but make it flexible enough to tweak for various projects. Don’t create a cookie cutter, one size fits all, pitch. Show your client you see his project as one that is unique and individual instead of the usual writing gig.

Rejection

If you receive rejection, don’t despair. Consider yourself part of a special club. Every single writer receives rejection at one time or another. Let it roll off your back and get back to work.

Sales

Freelancers are salespeople, whether we want to be our not. We have to sell ourselves and our writing to our clients. However, there’s a difference between talking yourself up and being smarmy or pushy.

Trust

Your clients and your readers want to trust you. They come to your blogs, or buy what you’re selling because you’ve proven to them you’re someone they can believe in. Don’t blow it.

Understanding

Writers must have the ability to see all sides of a story. They have to understand their clients wants and needs, and remember good storytelling and article writing requires the ability to truly get the subject matter.

Value

Freelance writers provide their clients with something of value, there has to be an end result. Perhaps it’s to sell magazines, or a product. Maybe it’s to bring in traffic or advertisers. Knowing exactly what your clients hope to achieve with your writing will help you to give them something of value.

Words

By themselves words are meaningless, together with other carefully chosen words, they can change the world. Make no mistake of their importance. Take care with your words.

Whenever I tell people what I do for a living, the next question out of their mouth is always, “How did you get started?” So this article is just a collection of tips to help you get started writing and marketing your work. Yes, it is possible to work flexible hours, in a location of your choosing, and make a full-time income!
Writers have completely unlimited opportunities to make money from their skills online!

• You can create your own blog. Make it something you are passionate about, and contribute to it frequently. You “job” is to make your blog interesting and compelling, so that people will want to return to it over and over. As you gain followers, you will also find ways to monetize your blog, like affiliate links. These links are for other sites well related to what your blog is about- and you’ll get paid when someone clicks through to the other site.

• You can write blogs for somebody else! There are literally millions of blogs out there just waiting for somebody to swoop down and take care of them. But what to charge? A good rule of thumb is to figure out what your time is worth to you, and plan accordingly. A press release is merely a statement written for delivery to news venues. It’s function is to give practical, accurate and attention-grabbing information to reporters, so that they will in turn distribute the details to the public.
Press releases generally follow the Who, What, Where, When, and Why format. Who is doing what, why should you care? When is this happening and at what location? They also should contain a personal quote or brief story about the person or company to gain attention of journalists and make them more compelling. The last part of the release should summarize the release and give further details, as well as have your company web address, email addresses and relevant phone numbers included.
A review is a critical assessment of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. Reviews are done of books, articles, fashion, art, restaurants, hotels, even airlines-the sky is the limit!
Reviews follow a simple format, as well. The first part gives the reader an overview of the content and description of the topic. (McDonald’s is a quick serve restaurant where you can get a burger pretty cheap.) Following that, the review offers it’s evaluation of the subject matter. What do you like about it, what would you change? Is it effective and does it suit the purpose as intended? (I like the fact that I can get in and out fast, the burgers are hot and fresh, and they have delicious Sweet Tea!) Finally, the reviewer will give their opinion and comment on whether the reader might enjoy it (If you’re hungry and in a hurry, McDonald’s gets my thumbs up!)

Many among us would love to be published in the Wall Street Journal, or have our fabulous idea for a novel turn into a bestseller. While these are both great goals to have, it is very difficult to achieve either overnight.

However, you can build your portfolio and put some money in the bank while working toward this target with these tips.

If you have a computer and an internet connection (or can use one at the library) you have access to an abundance of writer’s websites, where you can find markets for your articles, short stories, even poems. Each website is different-some have listings for print magazines, some literary projects, some online or e-zines, along with tips on writing and getting started in this business. Read the listings carefully so that you know what the publication is looking for, and try to read over some of the previous issues so that you understand the style readers are accustomed to.

www.ralan.com Ralan’s Webstravaganza is a fairly comprehensive website that has listings for anthologies, adult markets (somebody has to write that stuff), paying and nonpaying markets and contests. This site is geared towards science fiction, fantasy, horror, which are collectively called speculative fiction. This site also lists humor markets.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mslee/mag.html This is another speculative writing site, though Mary Soon Lee maintains her lists in order of how much the listings pay, from less than one cent per word to over three cents per word. (500 words is about one page.)

www.passionatepen.com This site caters to romance writers. Listings range from large publishers to small presses to e-publishers.

www.writerswrite.com This site has a searchable database plus lots of other tips, message boards, and job postings.

www.worldwidefreelance.com This site has free listings for over 500 markets, plus articles to help you in your writing career.

Additionally, you should check out these sites, where you can submit your articles, and you earn cash from them:

www.helium.com Helium has a writer’s marketplace, articles you can write to for a fixed price. If yours is picked as the best, you get paid. They also have contests on an ongoing basis, and upfront payments for articles posted once you reach a certain “star” level.

www.hubpages.com Hub doesn’t do upfront payments, but you earn through the advertising they have on their pages.

www.constant-content.com This site is like a consignment shop. You can post and sell your original works here.

www.examiner.com Examiner has both regional and national writers, each of which is an expert in their particular area. Examiner pays based on the popularity of your postings, and is a great way to impart your wisdom about your local area or a specific topic.

Keep in mind, these are more general sites, and offer other freelance positions, including web design and programming in addition to writing and are very competitive. Be careful not to sell yourself too short--many work similarly to Ebay, where you do a job and get rated, so the temptation is to work for peanuts to build your reputation.

We all know that the job market is a little soft, and it may take some time to recover.
In the meantime, why not take matters into your own hands and create a job for yourself?
With freelancing, you work from home, virtually, via the internet and telephone, so your clients can be anywhere in the world, providing there is no language barrier. Take some of your skills and experience and put them to work for the best boss in the world- YOU!
What follows is a great article that gives ten tips to success in becoming a freelancer, thanks to the British website, Freelancer.co.uk. It is a leading site where you can find freelancers and freelance projects of all kinds.
You have finally decided to become a full time freelancer and are extremely excited about your new venture. You have several ideas of what you’d like to accomplish, and you know your income potential is limitless – but you’re still unsure of exactly how to go about being the success you know you can be. Here are 10 tips to becoming a success as a freelancer:
1. Set up your home office. You should have at the very least the following: a computer with internet access, printer, and telephone with a good long distance plan, a messenger system like yahoo, and a good office software package like MS Office.
2. Set some goals for yourself: How much money would you like to make in the next year? The next 5 years? How many jobs will you have to take on to make that amount of money?
3. Do your research – not just online, but go to your library and read up on the subject of freelancing. Find other freelancers in your area, or online and don’t be afraid to ask them questions about how they got started.
4. Explore the many websites for information. This will take some time. Learn what types of companies are hiring, and the types of jobs they hire for. 6. If writing is going to be your niche, subscribe to magazines who hire freelance writers. Study their style to get an idea of what types of things they publish. Send them a query with a sample of your work.
7. Consider joining a freelance association. Be prepared to pay a membership fee. The benefits are many. You will become part of the freelance community and be able to talk with others and share your triumphs and tribulations.
8. Practice, practice, practice. If you want to specialize in website design, then get busy and do it! Ask friends and family if you can create websites for them (for free if you must!) This will give you work samples to give to prospective companies who are looking to hire you.
9. Make sure that all jobs and tasks you are hired for get completed on time and that you submit quality work. Ask if you can use them as a reference.
10. Once you’ve completed a few jobs, and have established a niche, you can set a fee that you’re willing to work for. If you are good at what you do, you can charge more than someone who is just starting out. This could give you unlimited earning potential!
