Longform Nonfiction Writers -could You Use This Retreat?

Longform journalists working in all media invited to apply by October 7

Press Release – Rensselaerville, N.Y. —

The Carey Institute for Global Good is now accepting applications from creators of longform nonfiction for its Spring 2017 class of fellows. The Nonfiction Program hosts writers, documentary filmmakers, photographers and multimedia journalists in quiet retreat for four to 12 weeks in the bucolic mountains of upstate New York. Applications for the Spring 2017 class close on October 7.

The Carey Institute provides fellows with lodging at its 100-acre estate in the historic village of Rensselaerville, New York, as well as meals, workspace and technological support free of charge. The program is one of the only residencies in the country to focus exclusively on longform nonfiction. Fellows are given the time, space and support they need to produce critical works of journalism.

Amazing Mentoring Opportunity

Mentoring is available to writers with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Joshua Friedman and National Book Award winning author Tim Weiner. Documentary filmmakers can receive feedback from Peabody Award winning director and editor Sam Pollard and PBS Frontline executive producer Raney Aronson. After the residency, the Carey Institute works to disseminate work done by the fellows to help reach the widest possible audience.

“The Carey Nonfiction Program is only in its second year, but we’ve now hosted almost 50 fellows from around the world whose range of interest and depth of journalism is inspiring,” says Tom Jennings, Program Director. “We’re proud to have helped these writers and filmmakers at a critical juncture of their work.”

The Carey Institute seeks to assemble a diverse group of fellows working on socially relevant political, health, environmental, human rights and justice topics.

International Applicants Welcome!

Creators of longform nonfiction based nationally and internationally are eligible to apply. Selections for the Carey Institute Nonfiction Program are based on the talent, quality, relevance and promise of applicants’ works. Approximately 15 fellows will be chosen for the Spring 2017 class, which begins on January 29. Applications are now open and are being accepted on a rolling basis until October 7. God Brings Writer Pressed!

Some of you know that I have been writing online news for our local area for several years.
Here is an editorial I just posted on the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer.

Two months ago, I was suddenly diagnosed with uterine cancer and needed energency surgery.
How would we keep a roof over our heads or food on the table when I could not work at my new job?
We reached out via an online fundraising campaign with a modest goal of $500 - $1 for each person for whom I had provided hours of free writing, advertising or Social Media work.
Often many people had said "Thanks, I "ll take you out for a coffee sometime."
So a virtual coffee was our goal.
$1 from each person for the years of writing I had done.
Through all my social media accounts, I have over 20,000 people who read my writing. If just 500 people each bought me a coffee, it would be a big help.
Not One Person Would Buy Us a Coffee
I would like to say the fundraiser was a great success.
However, other than a few people liking the posts and a couple sharing it, there was NO response.
Nada, zilch, nothing.
Two months later, we are back online.
How?
Through the grace of God.
First the bad news:
I fell and hit my head after surgery, so have had vertigo and "crickets" in my ears for months.
Even nodding my head has been a great challenge - walking even more difficult.
My daughter had to be hospitalized, so it is myself and her cat.
A PSW comes twice a week for 30 minutes to help me change and shower, and a physiotherapist just started coming once a week to try and help get rid of the vertigo and restore the muscles that had to be sliced to save my life.
I am thankfully covered by ODSP for Red Cross rides to the doctor. However, I have no way to do laundry, get mail, groceries or even prescriptions.
At the beginning of June, we were even going to lose our phone, which would mean no more PSW or physiotherapy.
GOD SAVES
In desperation I prayed,
"Lord, our phone is supplied by a church in exchange for Web work, If it is Your Will we have Internet so I can do the work for the church, and have this phone, I know You will supply the funds. If that is not Your Will, then I am going to trust that You have a better plan."

Two days later, I called the bank to check on our financial situation and received a surprise.
Quickly, I called the gas company.

"Did you make a mistake in the amount you withdrew from our account yesterday for equal billing?:

"No, the amount is correct.You were one of the 9% of our customers who had their equal billing reduced."

I was astounded.

The reduction in the equal billing for gas was the amount we needed for Internet!

So, this post has definitely been brought to you by God.

My improving health has been provided by God.
The ultrasound tech and the OBGYN both say it was a miracle the uterine cancer was found so early - no chemo needed. Just semi-annual check ups.

Morelmag Call For Southwestern Ontario Writers

Up to three poems by one poet and one work of fiction will be selected for publication on the Morelmag website. Authors must either come from Southwestern Ontario -defined here as any location west of Guelph, or be writing about a subject that directly reflects the region.
Payment for each category is $25.
The intake period for poetry is March 23 – April 6, 2015 for publication in mid-April 2015. Other poetry intake periods will be held in June, September and December of this year. The intake period for fiction will run April 6 – 19, 2015 for publication in May 2015. Other fiction intake periods will take place in August, November of this year and February 2016.

How to Apply to Get Paid for your Writing

Think you’ve got what it takes? Send them an email with at least 3 article ideas. Include your proposed title, and a short description as to what your articles will cover. Anything else will be deleted. They suggest including links to examples of your work or including them as an attachment, but I couldn't find an email address on their site only a contact form. Therefore, you might mention this in your submission through the contact form.
Bottom Line - Get paid about a bit over .03 per word - not a mint, but better than a kick in the but, and you could negotiate a link to your website for more traffic.

Good question Nai'lah - especially since this is the beginning of the Lenten period. What would I give up for writing? I know that I have given up very little for writing in comparison to many who must secrete their writing away or risk imprisonment or death. Would I be brave enough to do that? Would you?
Fortunately, I do not live where my writing would necessitate my giving up my freedom to write. Or is it that I have not yet created a piece important enough to require me to choose between liberty and writing?

Giving Up Things For Writing - Past

Hmmmm. .. So the things I have given up to write are pretty trivial. However, is it giving up or trading? So far I have chosen writing over:-

Snow shovelling,
Outings,
TV,
Movies,
Sewing,
Crocheting,
Baking,
Dancing, and ..

when on the verge of inspiration - I have even given up

Food, and
Sleep.

Giving Up Things For Writing - Future

I can see myself gladly sacrificing many more things for writing. For example:

Oven cleaning,
Ironing,
Grass cutting,
Weeding,
Cleaning Silver,
Stuffing Mushrooms.

Many of these activities can be delegated or avoided altogether. However, with a few exceptions, I will be able to return to these activities at another time. Would I be willing to give up my freedom for my writing? In all honesty, there are days when I think I would be happy to be somewhere secluded without any interruptions to my train of thought.-Just me, my lap top and the internet -that possibility of someone actually reading what I have written is the kindling to my writing fire. Would I give up my freedom for my writing? That is difficult to say. Would you?

First I needed to create a document in a format that could be accepted by 2ePub. 2ePub Input formats include:

When or if, it will be back in service remains to be seen.

Upon reading of Ray Bradbury's passing June 5th, I delved into online research about the author and his work. My Ray Bradbury mental montage was a collection of Fantasy comic book covers, Ray Bradbury Theatre Sound Clips, and Hitchcockesque Horror. What is your perception of Ray Bradbury?
I was surprised by what I learned.

I was surprised to discover Ray Bradbury, did not see himself as a Science Fiction writer, although he admitted to writing one Science Fiction novel, a novel in the centre of controversy written over 50 years ago. Perhaps you've heard of it? - Fahrenheit 451.

Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451-Living This Dystopian Sci-Fi Today

Ray Bradbury, in a treasure trove of mini clips on his website, discusses Fahrenheit 451. Ray initially imagined this dystopian society would occur in several generations, rather than several decades. Fahrenheit 451,named for the burning point of paper, is often seen as a statement against censorship; Not so, corrects Ray. With Fahrenheit 451

'I was never worried about freedom, I was worried about people being turned into morons by TV.'

Bradbury was very concerned about the state of education, and believed the greatest focus needed to be placed on teaching young children to read and write. Ray Bradbury, extended his education by visiting public libraries three days a week. When Fahrenheit 451was republished as an eBook by Simon and Schuster, Bradbury stipulated it be available for anyone to download it from a public library.

My Mobile Writing Experiences

Earlier this year,after interviewing a local business owner who had no computer, I realized how useful it would be to have a mobile device of some sort to show people my writing for proofing.

Aloud I said, "You know what God? It would be handy to have something I could take around with me,so people could see the work I do,and understand it a bit better."

I went onto one of my Twitter accounts. The first Tweet in my stream was from Paul Birwell Photography Studio offering the rise of an iPad. On his site,I discovered there were only 30 minutes left in the contest. Quickly,I completed the contest form. The next morning I received an email :

Over 5,000 people entered this contest,and you won! Congratulations!

Some people say I was really lucky. Me? I know what I asked for,and I know what I received.

IPad Writing Experiences Mixed Results

The iPad has been an invaluable tool, allowing me to show people work right on the spot,edit work to their satisfaction, and get approval right away. Using the iPad has not been without its frustrations, for example any site using flash is inaccessible. This site and my other blogsites avoid the use of flash. However,I have found much of my online work still requires a desktop due to flash programs. For example: editing YouTube videos, rearranging blogger content, or uploading pictures to Facebook pages using an iPad are puzzles that vex me daiky. Something I would like to be able to use on the iPad is my favourite blogging tool: Windows Live Writer. Currently, I'm blogging with a combination of Blogger for iPhone and emailing posts to my blog. Blogger for iPhone is a free APP,but it has many limitations,so I'm thinking about splurging on the upgraded version. You can read more about the tecnical part of my online life at Blogged Tips. P.n. Elrod- Published Author,and winner of the Pioneer Achievement Award in Vampire Fiction from RT Book Reviews, recently posted this caveat about using CreateSpace:

P.n.Elrod Pioneer Achievement Award

CreateSpace is a self-publishing Print On Demand service, not a vanity operation that takes money, not a commercial publisher that pays money. You don't have to buy your own books, but neither will your work be in any stores. If you want to be pro published, then go into a store, find books similar to what you write, see who published them, and follow the publisher's submission guidelines. Make sure you send them a damn good book!

Drawbacks of Print On Demand Self-Publishing

Most self-pub books don't sell more than 25 copies to family and friends. I'm only doing it because I've 20 years' worth of a fanbase built up and perhaps .05% of them might buy a copy. If I have 10,000 hardcore fans then I can hope 500 might buy. It's usually more like 250! New writers won't have even that small of a fan base. Despite rumors to the contrary I'm not at all famous.

CreateSpace Conclusions

This advice from Pat opened my eyes to quite a few things. I had been lumping Print on Demand Publishers in with vanity press publishers,now I see there is a distinct difference. Also the stats on the possibilities of selling your book when publishing with a print on demand service.If you have a large following established that is waiting for your next book, using a self-publishing print on demand service like Create Space may be for you,at any rate it definitely sounds much better than having to buy the books yourself,and being out of pocket,as I was contemplating when I first started my queries into the ins and outs of publishing. While P.n. Elrod may not see herself as famous, she definitely must be crazy busy with that many fans,so I am more than grateful for the time she takes to help guide others through the morass of scams and scammers out there waiting to prey on new authors. Perhaps if we blog enough of her advice, she will become famous even in her eyes.

What is PUBSLUSH Press?

PUBSLUSH Press, a new crowd funding venture for books has a rather interesting concept couched in philanthropy PUBSLUSH supporters pledge to buy books; when the number of supporters for a book reaches 2,000 credit card pre-orders, PUBSLUSH publishes your book,and donates a book to a charity for each book they publish. Interesting concept,but why couch it in terms of philanthropy? Something smells fishy to me.

PUBSLUSH Publishing Contract Perils

Author Victoria Strauss, has a number of concerns, about this company, especially regarding PUBSLUSH's publishing contract. Earlier this week, Ms Strauss published an article on the Writer Beware blog outlining her concerns about PUBSLUSH. PUBSLUSH contacted her shortly after her post appeared online. As a result of her 'cordial email exchange' with the company, PUBSLUSH made some positive changes. However,major concerns still exist.

Despite Tweaks, PUBSLUSH Publishing Contract Still Stinks

Apparently, simply submitting your work to PUBSLUSH constitutes acceptance of the terms of its publishing agreement,something rather odd,and not apparent unless you are a diligent fine print reader like Victoria. PUBSLUSH apparently treasures this part of their policies,and does not wish to change it,PUBSLUSH did tell Ms. Strauss they will be re-designing their submission page to make it clearer to authors that they're binding themselves to a legal agreement. Frankly- I wouldn't hold my breath.

Conflict of Interest-Publisher=Literary Agent

Victoria points out another hidden item tucked away in the publishing contract, is the circumstances under which PUBSLUSH magically becomes the writers' literary agent, and the commission charged for this service: 15%. Hmm.. 15% for selling something to themselves? I'm not quite clear on what exactly literary agents do, but this certainly seems to be a conflict of interest. I thought a literary agent received their commission by haggling to get the best deal paid to you by a publishing company. Haggling with yourself? Even being an inexperienced author,this turns on big flashing neon STAY AWAY sign! Suffice it to say, if Victoria,a published author, has concerns, that's enough sign for me to avoid PUBSLUSH.

Berret- Koehler standard royalties begin at 10% on the first 10,000 copies sold, 15% on the next 20,000, and 20% thereafter on net received. On subsidiary rights, the royalty payments are 50%, except electronic, which is at a flat 15%. BK does not pay advances, but they offer a very unique agreement, which includes the copyright being held by the author,getting more free books than other publishers offer, not paying for proofreading,and more. Proposals for Berrett-Koehler need to cover the following topics:
1. Need: Why is a new publication on this topic needed at this time? How is this topic of increasing rather than passing or declining interest?
2. Purpose: How is the publication designed to meet the need? What are the primary and secondary purposes of the publication? What new contribution does the publication make to the field?
3. Audiences and Uses: Who are the intended audiences and how will they be able to use the publication? Be specific and realistic, rather than claiming that people or managers in general will be interested. Distinguish between primary and secondary audiences. Identify specific professional associations that are audiences.
4. Knowledge Base: Describe your knowledge base of academic and/or professional experience, research, and theory. Attach biographical information, including the titles of previously published works. Please include name of publisher, date of publication, and number of copies sold.
5. Related and Competing Books: What are the five most competitive or similar publications, and how - specifically-does the proposed publication differ from and go beyond each of them? Please describe your proposed publication's new contribution in considerable detail - this is a central issue.
6. Outline: Attach a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline of the publication's planned contents.
7. Sample Chapters: Please send entire draft manuscript if it is available; otherwise, please submit two to four sample chapters with the publication proposal indicating when complete draft manuscript would be available.
8. Manuscript Length and Special Materials: How many pages (assuming 250 words per page) do you expect that the manuscript (not the book) will be? What special materials (drawings, tables, figures, exhibits, and so on) do you anticipate will be included?

9. Timetable: What is your schedule for completing the manuscript?

Do you make,or Tweak things/ I stumbled across these writer guidelines while researching QR codes.MAKE is a do-it-yourself technology magazine choc full of fascinating info that is written by makers.Projects include everything from making plastic plant pots to Barn raising,to biofeedback devices.Make pays $25 to $100 for a review. Payment for other types of content are negotiated.

MAKE Submissions:

When writing for MAKE, use your voice. Tell them the story behind your project. There are four types of content in Make: Projects, Features, Reviews, and Everything Else related to do-it-yourself technology.

Make Reviews

Make wants recommendations of gadgets, tools, web sites, newsletters, instructional videos, books, magazines, CD-ROMs, or instruments you already own and love. First person recommendations of 50 - 250 words should be emailed to Arwen O'Reilly Griffith, staff editor at Make with the subject line 'Toolbox'. They want to hear about your involvement with the item you are reviewing. Basically they are looking for a letter telling them why they should devote space to your item.

Make Projects

Did you make or tweak something,and want to teach others how to do it too? They'd like to publish it in their projects section.Make publishes two kinds of projects: 'DIY' - shorter projects, and 'Major Projects' - more complex lengthy projects. These articles should be accompanied by pictures,and can also point to pdfs, videos,and so on.DIY pieces are conversational, and run between 200 and 750 words. 'Major Projects', on the other hand, need to be submitted to fit their template.
Project Writing Tips: Remember - you're the readers' coach. Think of readers as a smart people who just don't know the same things you know. Imagine the questions readers might have about your project. Explain how they can recreate the thing you're writing about.

Make Features

Make also has several sections with articles about interesting things made by people or groups of people. 'Made on Earth' is a section with large photos of projects and their makers, along with 200-word stories about them. 'Maker' is a longer profile of a dedicated maker-of-cool-things. They also publish 600 to 1,000-word articles about groups, companies, clubs, and technologies relating to DIY projects.

Everything Else

Make is also interested in ideas involving DIY technology, that don't fit in any of the above categories. Funny stories of projects gone awry, strange experiences while making something, surprising experiences involving DIY. Make it interesting,and they'll run it. When checking the links on Writer Pressed, I discovered Todays Parent had changed their Writer's Guidelines drastically. Now there is very little specified as to writers guidelines on the Today's Parent Website. Features
Today's Parent runs features of varying lengths in each issue, with a balance between the practical and the reflective, the light–hearted and the investigative. All articles should be grounded in the reality of Canadian family life. Without claiming to know all the answers, we try to leave the reader with a sense of positive direction.
Feature topics can include such diverse stories as the evolving role of fathers, choosing the discipline technique that's right for your child, dealing with picky eaters, postpartum depression, returning to work, sex after childbirth, birthday party ideas, surrogate motherhood and child poverty. All AMMSA publications include news, sports, arts and entertainment, reviews and features about Aboriginal people and their communities.

We do accept stories on spec, but it's a better idea to e-mail the editors or call at 1-800-661-5469 ext. 249 [or (780) 455-2700 in the Edmonton area] and pitch the idea first.

We are NOT interested in poetry or fiction.

Deadline, story focus and length will be set by the editor when the story is assigned. Most stories should be between 500 and 800 words.

All stories should be submitted with photographs and caption information-who, what where, why, when and how of the picture.

AMMSA does accept stand-alone photos.

All photographs should be shot in colour.

We prefer high resolution photos be sent via e-mail.

If you send an electronic file, it must be a minimum of 200 dpi at 4 (four) inches by 6 (six) inches. Cover photos will need to be 200 dpi at 8 (eight) inches by 10 (ten) inches.

Freelancer's cheques will be issued within 30 days following publication of the story. If a story is assigned, but not published immediately (banked for future use), payment will be issued prior to publishing.

A freelancer can expect to be paid $3.60 per published inch for a single source story and $4.15 for a multi-source story. All articles published by AMMSA will also be made available online on AMMSA websites and distributed online through third party partners.

For a front page photo in Windspeaker, the rate is $100, and $75 for front page photos in any of our other publications. Inside photos are paid at $25 per photo published.

AMMSA pays only pre-approved expenses of writers on assignment. Original receipts are required.

If AMMSA assigns a story, that story is copyrighted as AMMSA property. It is not to be reproduced in any other publication without the consent of the AMMSA editor.

If a freelancer generates a story idea and that story is accepted for publication in an AMMSA paper, that story, in that form, becomes the property of AMMSA and may not be sold to any other publication without the consent of the AMMSA editor.

If a freelance writer wants to sell a story on the same event or subject to more than one publication and AMMSA has accepted the story for publication, the story to be sold elsewhere must be substantially different in form and may not be submitted to any publication defined by AMMSA as sharing the same market area as AMMSA unless approval from the editor is sought. If a story that has appeared in AMMSA is found in another publication, AMMSA will not pay the freelancer for that story.

The above does not apply to assigned stories. They are exclusively AMMSA property.

AMMSA may use the story in any or all of the newspapers it publishes, and a writer will be compensated at half the rate for any use over the use of the story in the first publication.

For example: If your single source story appears in Windspeaker, you would receive $3.60 per published inch. If that story appears in Windspeaker, and is picked up by Alberta Sweetgrass, you will receive an additional $1.80 per published inch for the work. And on it goes for each of the AMMSA papers that pick up the story.

AMMSA follows CP style, with a few idiosyncrasies. Read the paper to get an idea of what we expect.

NOTE: All articles that are published in the paper version of our publications are also made available online on the AMMSA website and are distributed via third party online distribution services. If you object to having your material marketed/distributed in this way, please let the editor know. Your objection to this may impact our ability to assign you articles and the amount of work you can contribute.

Any requests from publishers (periodical, textbook etc) to reprint freelance materials will be directed back to the freelancer for approval - as AMMSA does not own or control those rights.

Any compensation for online subscriptions/payments of articles written by freelancers will be shared with the freelancer as follows: 50% of payments received by AMMSA specifically atrributable to a freelancer will be shared with the originating freelance wrier.

These freelance payments will be disbursed once funds accumulate to a level greater than $50.00.
