Off and on over the years, I’ve tried. I’ve tried to give up on the idea of writing for a living, on writing much of anything at all for anyone other than myself. But it was like trying to turn my back on a lover whom I longingly ached for, but who wasn’t always there for me when I needed him most…yet who would suddenly come back into my life when I least expected him, and totally reclaim me.

“You can’t really make a living as a writer,” I grew up believing, or had someone really told me that? “You need to get a real job. Something dependable, reliable…something that will be there to take care of you in your old age.” I felt torn in half, one part of me grasping for the security, stability, and the middle class lifestyle I’d been raised in, and the other half yearning for the uncertain, the exciting, and the freedom with which I imagined artists and actors, musicians and writers lived.

I have lived with that dichotomy all of my adult life. Unlike Robert Frost, I took the road more travelled by, but always feeling like a bored schoolgirl gazing out the classroom window on a warm spring day, wishing I had the nerve, the courage, to play hooky, to break the rules I’d been raised to accept.

And yet I can smile at that life choice I made so many years ago. For if I hadn’t travelled that beaten path, think of all the experiences I would have never had, the places I would have never seen, the people I would have never met, laughed and cried with, loved. I took the only path I dared to take at the time, even though it never felt quite like I was going in the right direction for me, even though the shoe that I purchased never quite fit.

All the while, writing never abandoned me, even during those times I tried to leave it behind. And now the internet opens new doorways and markets for me, new ways to give in to my passion for pulling words out of thin air and planting them on the page. I write, and I love it. How can I feel even the slightest regret about that?

Besides, I think with the hint of a smile, one is never too old to play hooky. Or to continue to pursue a dream.

Here’s to your writing success.

By C. Hope Clark

I read that phrase in a blog this week. It wasn’t the major point of the message, but it was the piece that caught my attention.

It’s human nature for us to compare ourselves, our talents, our looks, to those around us. We catch ourselves being smug as we recognize poor writing on a cheap website. Or we feel demoralized as an opening hook in a story puts ours to shame.

But what if we quit making comparisons and started seeking the take-away value of everyone in our writing path?

One reader placed me on her newsletter list. Her voice was clean, her message multi-layered and intellectually challenging. She shamelessly tackled social issues in her region, often recommending action others wouldn’t have the guts to stand up and endorse. Months later I learned she
lived on a fixed income in a trailer, struggling to make ends meet.

I know another lady who lost her job and opened a writers’ retreat. I purchase articles from writers for FundsforWriters, and many of them amaze me with their knowledge. A new writer can teach you how to be daring and disregard some of the old rules we think we can’t break. An established writer can show us the ropes.

As my sons grew up, as they compared themselves to their peers as all boys do, I told them that all of us have the same amount of talent. Imagine me holding my hands in a bowl fashion, as if holding that talent.
Some people use all their talent in one area, becoming gifted, even genius. They might perform their talent without effort, but they can’t balance a checkbook, keep a job or find a girlfriend. Then there are others who distribute their talents across the realm, spreading it out and becoming
known as a Jack-of-all-trades. They perform decently at almost everything they touch, but aren’t exceptional at anything. Then there are all those in between, utilizing their bowls of talent in different directions and venues.
My point is that everyone is talented. No one can be grand at everything, meaning they have shortfalls and assets. That writer who critiqued your work might get under your skin, but a night’s sleep might make you
realize she was right on your page two. It doesn’t matter if she’s published, where she’s published or whether she’s self-published. Her voice deserves to be heard.

That editor who declines your work and makes a suggestion might not understand the point of your story, but he might have a firm grasp of marketing to his readership. He isn’t wrong because his opinion isn’t yours.

Everyone you run into has something to offer you as a writer, as a person. In them you find your best stories, and your best opportunities.

—

Along with other keywords and phrases, I set up a Google alert to notify me whenever the term “writing jobs” appears on line. Invariably, besides returning links to legitimate job sites, I see people in online forums asking about how to get writing jobs online as though nothing has ever been written on the subject.

I know why, of course. Some people keep hoping to find some magical key that unlocks the door to easy access into the world of writing for money. And, like with everything else, there are people willing to sell them such a key, even one that’s one size fits all, leading them to information that they could have, with even just a little effort, found for free.

Yet there are legitimate how-to guides out there as well, excellent ones that will save you a great deal of time in researching your own writing outlets, or steer you towards types of writing jobs you may have never thought of pursuing. The trick is to separate the writing wheat from the chaff. I have listed the best free online resources for finding writing assignments in a previous article, which you can find here: Best Web Sites for Finding Freelance Writing Jobs. The following are a few resources that, if you have some money to invest in your writing career, are worth looking into:

The Wealthy Web Writer: This is a new membership site launched by the American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI), a company that has put out a number of excellent writing programs over the years. For a monthly fee that you can cancel at anytime, you’ll find a treasure trove of information, guidance, direction and writing career advice. You can learn more about it by clicking here.

Make Money from Writing: Freelance writer Debbie Dragon has developed eclasses based on her own experience that guide you step by step in establishing and growing your own freelance writing business. Find out about her in-depth program here.

The Wealthy Freelancer: Copywriters Steve Slaunwhite, Ed Gandia and Pete Savage collaborated to bring you this excellent guide, which will be available as of March 2, 2010. I had the opportunity to review the first three chapters, and strongly endorse this information-packed book. You can find it here.
