What is Article Spinning?

One of my students of Get Paid to Write: Become a Freelance Writer asked the following:

Nicky, what is "article spinning"? I've seen that frequently in some of the ads on Freelancer.com. Just curious!

Good question! If you've been checking out bidding websites for writers or general job ads for writers you have most likely come across some people asking for article spinning. From what I understand article spinning is putting an article through an article spinner software. Basically, these types of software will change the words in the document so that it can pass Copyscape and appear plagiarism free. The spun articles comes out horrendous. It replaces many words with anything similar, which results in an article that makes no sense. Some people will even use article spinners to create several "new" articles from the one article. A robot cannot do what a talented writer can.

Ten Tips for Writing Good Sales Copy

Do you ever write ads for online or offline media?

If so, the tips below will help you to get the very

best response.

1.   Start by choosing the single benefit of your product

    or service that you most wish to highlight. This is your
    "principal selling position". To choose this, ask yourself
    what specific benefit makes your product or service

    different, better, or special. Is it the price?, the
    convenience?, the reliability? How are you different from
    your competitors?

2.  Write attention-grabbing headlines. This is very important.
    People are overloaded with information, so they skim read --
    particularly on the web. If your headline doesn't get their
    attention, everything else may go unread. Your headline will
    often highlight your principal selling position.

3.  Write a list of all the features of your product or service
    then translate each of these into a benefit for the customer.
    One way to do this is to look at each feature in turn then
    ask yourself "So what?" Imagine you're a customer; why should
    you care about this feature? Ask yourself, "What will it do
    for me?"

    For example, don't just say that you product is fast (a
    feature) tell the customer that it will give them more free
    time (a benefit). Better still, paint a picture of them
    using their free time to go to the beach, read a book, or
    relax.

4.  Write copy that emphasises the benefits in a way that makes
    an emotional connection. For example, let's say you're
    selling toothpaste. A feature might be that it contains
    fluoride. Sure, but that's boring. Rather, say it "Lessens
    tooth decay!" or even better: "Brush with Boffo and avoid the
    dentist's drill!" See? You've turned a dull feature into a
    strong emotional benefit. Isn't that more effective than
    "Contains fluoride"?

5.  Start with your strongest selling points. The first few
    paragraphs are particularly important. Use them to create a
    desire for your product or service by briefly touching on
    the major benefits it will bring the customer. You don't
    have to go into too much detail up front as you can expand
    on these benefits later. Do try to get your big guns in
    early, though.

6.  Testimonials sell. Good, believable testimonials from real
    people will help sales, particularly on the web where
    establishing credibility is a tough job. For even better
    credibility, ask your testimonial writers if you can
    include their contact details along with their testimonial.

7.  Write with a natural style. Don't try to be pretentious or
    over friendly. Just write it the way you'd say it.

8.  Decide who you're writing for and why. What tone are you
    trying to convey: light hearted or serious? What level of
    jargon are you going to employ? Suit your language to your
    intended audience.

9.  The final sales pitch can be strengthened with some or all of
    the following techniques:
    * Provide a good deal; for example, "20% off".
    * Employ urgency; for example, "This week only".
    * Make your offer risk free; for example, "Comes with a
      money-back guarantee".

10. End by telling the reader how to get your offer; for example,
    "Ring now" or "Click here to order now for immediate
    delivery". Needless to say, ordering details must be clearly
    visible and simple to follow.

Looking at these tips, it may seem that good advertising
involves manipulating the emotions of your customers.

It does.

Selling is a blatant form of emotional manipulation that involves
convincing your customer that they want to buy your product or
service, and they want to do it now.

Is this unethical? Well, it can be. It depends where you draw the
line. 

In point 9 I said that your sales message could include a sense
of urgency. A common ploy on the web is to include a claim like
"Offer closes this Saturday". If you go back to the site the
following week, though, the offer is still available. If you were
tricked by such a claim, would you order from that company again?
Would you recommend it to your friends?

So, by all means, use the tips above to write as persuasively as
you can, but remember that if you attract sales by deceiving your
customers you risk legal action, poor word of mouth, no repeat
business and refund requests.

So, be as persuasive as you can possibly be, but avoid the
temptation to be too persuasive.

Is Guru Safe or a Scam?

Message:	Hi Nicky! I am also a freelance writer. I had a quick question for you regarding work with Guru.com. I see that you don't seem to have a problem with obtaining projects and I was wondering if you've had any problem with any of the projects you've done. I'm just trying to make sure I don't fall into a scam. I'd appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

Hi Kate,

Actually, I think Guru helps keep the scammers away. I will only start a project when the money is in escrow. When I complete the project the client releases the escrow to me. It's safe and secure that way. Once I did have a potential client ask me to start a project without escrow. He said he would pay me via PayPal when I finished. I reiterated my policy (which is stated clearly in my bid) that I do not begin work on projects until the money is in escrow. I never heard from him again! Guru is great, and I even remember back when it was Creative Moonlighter! I highly recommend it.

How Editors Know You're An Amateur

Are you happy being an amateur writer? Do you want to stay in that happy state? Then just follow these tips in all your submissions.

Don't address the editor by name. After all, there may be many editorial staff at the publication just waiting to jump at the chance to read your work, and you don't want them to miss out do you?

Don't use double spacing. You never see articles or stories published in double space do you? So why should you bother double spacing your work, when someone is just going to have to convert it to single spacing later?

Don't bother checking your spelling or grammar. That's the editor's job isn't it?

Don't send return postage. Why should you assume they'll return your work? That's defeatism. If they want to publish it, they can write you a letter - surely they can afford that? And as you've paid to send it to them, surely they can pay to return it?

Don't put your name on the manuscript. They're bound to keep your manuscript and the cover letter together aren't they. No one would ever file correspondence and submissions in different places. Neither would they keep your letter, and send your submission to someone else to appraise it. That never happens.

Don't tell them how many words it is. Surely they can count?

Don't use a standard font. Everybody else does, and you want your manuscript to stand out from the crowd.

Don't use a new ribbon or cartridge. Why waste ink when the manuscript will get re-typed before publication anyway?

Don't tell them you've sent it to other editors. What they don't know can't hurt them. And you can always play one editor off against an other when they both offer you publication. Surely they'll understand that they can't expect an exclusive look at your work without a guarantee to publish it?

Don't read the publication's guidelines. Your work is so good that they'll have to publish it, even if it doesn't fit what they say they want. They just don't realise that they want it yet, that's all.

Just follow the tips above, and you're guaranteed to remain a happy amateur for ever.

What is Technical Writing?

Before setting up shop as a proofreader, I worked as a technical
writer. When I told people what I did, I was often met with blank
stares bordering on total incomprehension.

These days, I'm often asked how to get into the field of
proofreading, and I usually suggest a stint doing technical
writing first. Again, I'm often met by the same response. 

Thus I thought I'd set the record straight and finally answer
that question that has (I'm quite sure) been keeping you awake at
nights:

Just what is a "technical writer" anyway?

Technical writing is the profession that involves translating
scientific and technical information into more easily
understandable language.

Technical writers may prepare scientific and technical reports,
operating and maintenance manuals, catalogues, assembly
instructions, sales materials and project proposals. They may
also plan and edit technical reports and oversee the preparation
of illustrations, photographs, diagrams and charts.

Some technical writers work full time for a single company for
many years; others choose to do short-term contracts (usually of
three to twelve months duration) for a variety of companies. Some
hold a managerial (or other) job in which technical writing is
just one of many tasks that they perform.

Some technical writers may specialise in a particular field such
as medicine or computing. Others may write about a wide range of
areas. Some start as general writers and then acquire specialised
technical knowledge. Others start as technical professionals and
then learn technical writing "on the job".

To be a successful technical writer (whether full time or just
occasionally) you need many skills:

* You need a degree -- or at least a great deal of experience  --
  in the field (or fields) about which you're writing.

* Obviously, you need to be able to write well. At a minimum,
  this involves having a good vocabulary and a strong command of
  grammar, spelling and punctuation. If you don't know a
  conjunction from an adverb this may not be the field for you.

* You also need to be able to organise information well. When
  writing a technical report, you need to be able to arrange the
  information into a suitable order, delete (or de-emphasise)
  less important information, cross-reference the information and
  more.

* You need good people skills. Sometimes the only people who will
  be able to answer your questions about the material you're
  writing about will be scientists, programmers and engineers.
  These folk are not always the best communicators! Regardless,
  you'll have to be able to organise time to talk with them,
  tease out the answers to your questions, and have them check
  your work for technical correctness. This requires good
  interpersonal skills.

* You will need good Internet and library skills as these can be
  vital sources of information. You need to know how to use them
  efficiently.

* It helps to be a fast and accurate typist. Often you'll be
  working on a deadline, and two-finger typing will be a
  disadvantage.

It's a challenging career, and not an easy one to get into. If
you work at it, though, it can be both financially rewarding and
professionally satisfying.

As a writer, Staples is my favorite store. I could spend hours in there just browsing around, and I have. I would have added these to my article on the Top 10 Home Office Gadgets, but I felt they deserved their own spotlight.

I hauled my huge shredder off of my desk and put this space-saving one in its place. It does everything my old, big one did, but takes up 1/4th of the space. It cross-cut shreds (0.156" x 1.103"), can take six sheets at a time, has manual reverse jam protection (which I’ve used and it worked), and a 1.37 gallon wastebasket. Week 6:  How to Get a Writing Job

Week 7:  How to Set Writing Fees
This lesson will discuss how much money most writers and editors make in their respective fields. I will help you figure out how much money you want to make and how you can calculate your hourly rate. This may be an intricate art, but you do need to make a living.

Assignment: Calculate your hourly rate and set up a fee schedule.

Week 8:  Freelance Writing Success
You are now a writer and you need to get used to saying it. I will teach you about maintaining a good clientele, keeping resumes up to date, making more money, setting goals, and more.

Assignment: Write on!

Cancer Sucks - Spartacus' Andy Whitfield

Last night the star of Spartacus, Andy Whitfield, died from cancer. He was an excellent actor. He was a true gladiator on the Starz show and in life. Unfortunately, that life was cut short from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
Spartacus is set to go on with Liam McIntyre to fill his role. Rest in peace, Andy Whitfield. My condolences to the loved ones. This might be a blog about writing, but writing is an art, as is acting.

I have been writing for 25 years and even taught writing to college kids. I have edited for ten years--two at the Wild Rose Publishing. Why would I spend $150 for this course? Should I? Am I really going to learn something?
For the last year, I have been taking advantage of Guru but I could see that it wasn't enough. I'm not made of money but I do have a faith that tells me that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Here was a class about making the money I needed writing from home. I started filling out the form and directed paypal to pay for the course.
The course started and there was a concise, practical guide to making money freelancing. Step-by-step it was in front of me. I was working on lesson 3 when the computer gods struck. Of course, we have to have a bit of conflict and obstacles. Do something right and plan on a couple of big rocks to land on the path. My big rocks got the city I live in involved because the duplex I live in is owned by an out of state company. I wanted a little hole for the cable added to another room and wow... should I live in a business zone to freelance write? Before it was over, I had to admit that I needed a new computer and ordered it. Instead of getting banged up like cars, computers get slower and slower. So, I am finally able to write Nicky and tell her my story.
Nicky came through. She helped me to get all my material together and answered any questions I had. I do like all the information that she hands out in the lessons. I have hope of making much more money. I have more sources to turn to. I have a plan. Being an old Tupperware lady who was good enough to drive their car, I could see how to do it. I just hadn't thrown my knowledge into the making of a freelance writer.

WEEKS AT A GLANCE:

Assignment: Assess why you want to be a writer, how well you can work on your own, and the importance of business skills in freelance work. Make your commitment. Have a discussion with family and set up a home office.

Week 2: How to Choose a Writing Niche
You will get information on the different freelance writing niches to study. I will talk about the most lucrative freelance writing careers and how the Internet plays a huge role in this business. I will also discuss the importance of choosing a freelance writing niche.

Assignment: Study the different freelance writing niches. Think about which ones you would like to do in your writing career. Choose your top 3 freelance writing niches.

Week 3: Building Your Writing Portfolio
Every writer needs a portfolio. This is especially important for those just starting out. I will show you how to put together a portfolio even if you don’t have any clips (published work in print or online). I will also show you how to store your work and stay organized.

Assignment: Start building your freelance writing portfolio.

Week 4: How to Create a Writing Resume
I’ll teach you how to write an irresistible writing resume that will include all of your skills, experience and education. I will give you a freelance writing template to help you create your own resume.

Assignment: Create your own writing resume.

Week 5: How to Write a Query and Submit to Publications
Learning how to write queries and pitches is essential if you want to be published in magazines, newsletters, newspapers, whether it is in print or online. You will also need to understand the rules on submitting queries to publications. I'll offer some tips and writing secrets on getting your foot in the door.

Assignment: Send out a query for consideration.

Week 6: How to Get a Writing Job
At this point you will be ready to obtain your first paying client! I will show you how to market and promote your services in the freelance industry. I will also teach you how to stand out from the competition, where to get clients, and how to find potential clients.

Assignment: Apply for writing jobs and obtain your first client.

Week 7: How to Set Writing Fees
This lesson will discuss how much money most writers and editors make in their respective fields. I will help you figure out how much money you want to make and how you can calculate your hourly rate. This may be an intricate art, but you do need to make a living.

Assignment: Calculate your hourly rate and set up a fee schedule.

Week 8: Freelance Writing Success
You are now a writer and you need to get used to saying it. I will teach you about maintaining a good clientele, keeping resumes up to date, making more money, setting goals, and more.

Assignment: Write on!

Materials needed: All written materials in the form of lectures, assignments, article links, etc. are provided by the instructor.
