We're leaving our lovely old dairy barn, and moving into Queen Alexandria's Beach Hut, located 5 minutes from the gates of Sandringham, Norfolk.

But if you do come to visit, bare with us whilst the renovation, painting and decorating takes place.

We have a new family member

For the past few weeks, we have been sitting on a bit of a secret!!! and her name is Willow...

Willow is 6 years old and we have rescued her from a not to nice situation.

Her and our Boxer dog George are getting on marvellously, and to be honest we think George is secretly loving having a play mate; even though he can be a little anti-social now and then.

So watch this space for the adventures of "Willow and George".

Treat Yourself Monday .... Has Arrived!!

Treat Yourself Monday has arrived..... and after a week of eating two very tasty, and very well decorated cakes, from Amanda and Harry's time at the Fabulous Cake company... it's time for a change.

This week Harry has made, some Chelsea Buns that are bursting with fruit.... nom nom nom

Harry's Fruit Bursting Chelsea Buns

Recipe:
500g/1lb 2oz strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
1 tsp salt
1 x 7g sachet fast-acting yeast
300ml/10fl oz milk
40g/1½oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing the tin
1 free-range egg
vegetable oil, for greasing

Filling:

25g/1oz unsalted butter, melted
1 orange, zest only, grated
75g/2½oz soft brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
100g/3½oz dried cranberries
200g/3½oz sultanas
Finishing Touch:

1 heaped tbsp apricot jam
200g/7oz icing sugar, sifted
1 orange, zest only, grated

Method

Place the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and stir until thoroughly combined. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the yeast.

Warm the milk and butter in a small saucepan until the butter is melted and the mixture is lukewarm. Pour into the flour mixture, add the egg and stir thoroughly until the contents of the bowl come together as a soft dough.

Tip the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knead well for five minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Place the dough into an oiled bowl and leave to rise, covered with a damp tea towel, for one hour or until doubled in size.

Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Roll out dough into a rectangle about 30x20cm/12x8in.

Brush all over with the melted butter. Evenly sprinkle the orange zest over the buttered surface, followed by the sugar, cinnamon and dried fruit.

Tack down the long side of the dough rectangle nearest to you by pressing it down onto the work surface with your thumb. Roll the opposite long side of the dough towards you quite tightly, until the roll is complete and tight. With a sharp knife cut into 10 4cm/1¾in thick rounds.

Grease a deep roasting tin or baking tray thoroughly with butter.

Place the buns, cut side up, into the greased baking tray leaving about 1cm/½in of space between each one. You want them to be close enough so that when they rise further and then bake, they will bake with their sides touching. They can then be pulled apart and you get a lovely soft edge

Leave to rise for about 30 minutes in a warm place. Preheat oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.

When the buns are ready, put them in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden-brown. Check after 15 minutes or so and cover the buns with foil if they are getting too brown.

Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool slightly before transferring them from the tin to a cooling rack.

Melt the jam in a small saucepan with a splash of water until smooth. Brush the jam over the buns to glaze and allow to cool.

Mix together the icing sugar, orange zest and two tablespoons water. Drizzle the icing over the cooled buns and allow to set before serving.

Ideas for next time....

Next time I shall possibly not use a rolling pin, to roll our the dough, as i found this knocked some of the air out. Instead i shall leave the dough to prove for a little longer, and then stretch it using my hands.

a "Fabulous" Treat Yourself Monday

Well yesterday was a very "Fabulous" Treat Yourself Monday... as Amanda and Harry spent time with The Fabulous Cake Company, learning how to decorate a 'Parcel Cake'

Now our Mondays are normally pretty busy, setting up tasks and jobs for the week; and following up on the daily chores. However, this was a Monday with a difference; as in September for Amanda’s birthday, she was treated to a cake decorating class…. and today was the day!!!

Situated only 30 minutes down the road, in the picturesque coastal village of Wells-next-the-sea, you’ll be able to discover The Fabulous Cake Company.

After a small lay in and a few cups of tea before our departure, we arrived and greeted by the company owners, who made us feel very welcomed into their home, after getting to know each other, and discovering the two ‘Fabulous’ owners lived not to far, from where the boys grew up; we sat down and the ‘Parcel Cake’ master class began.

First we learnt how to level our cakes, and then make a cut through the middle and apply the jam and filling (don’t panic, the off cuts were consumed in to time)… now this may sound simple, but it’s actually trickier than it sounds… Amanda was a pro, however Harry took a little longer trying to achieve a nice flat level service. But when it came to the buttercream and jam filling, it was Amanda who ended up with more of a strawberry ripple!!!

Cakes set aside to firm up; it was time to make the decorative flowers, and play with the sugar icing, after Harry confusing a plastic rolling pin as a candle (we do sometimes wonder, what his mind is thinking) we was on a roll, creating these delicate decorations.

Next was time to cover the cakes; so back came the cakes, and on went some more buttercream, to hold it in place when draped over the cake. Now it wasn’t easy and took a little concentration, but two parcel cakes we’re starting to take shape.

Next came the ribbon and bows, with some very creative imprint patterns; and then was lunch; and what a treat it was. A fine selection of cooked meats, cheeses, pickles and bread were offered, creating a truly fine antipasto lunch and the perfect opportunity in getting to know our hosts for the day, and exchange stories about Norfolk.

Then back to the cakes and time to bring it all together, next were the polka dots, helping to create a disguise for any of those little imperfections!!! then to add the decorative flowers, as a finishing touch to polish off our creative parcel cakes.

It really was a fabulous day with The Fabulous Cake Company, and we can’t wait until the New Year, to maybe have another go at something different and new.

Treat Yourself Monday ..... A Banana and Honey Loaf Disaster

Unfortunately this week, Harry's Banana and Honey Loaf, has suffered a baking disaster!!!

hmmmmm maybe it needed longer in the over..... or maybe the bananas were too ripe!!!

However, here is the recipe; why not try it at home and send Harry your pictures...

Banana and Honey Loaf

25g self-raising flour
¼ level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
100g butter
225g bananas
100g caster sugar
Grated rind of 1 lemon
2 large eggs
6 tablespoons thick pale honey

Preheat the oven to 160oC/fan 140oC/Gas 3. Lightly grease a 900g/2lb loaf tin then line the base with baking parchment.

Measure the flour and nutmeg into a large bowl and rub in the butter using your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Peel and mash the bananas and stir into the flour mixture, along with the sugar, lemon rind, eggs and honey. Beat well until evenly mixed, then turn into the prepared tin and level the surface.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 ¼ hours or until a fine skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cover the teabread loosely with foil during the end of the cooking time if it is browning too much. Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack.

However, we have been saved by a lovely cupcake contribution, from two very special boys. Who have even iced our names on..... Well Done Kyle and Kieran

Harpley scaffold bed wins recognition at Grand Designs show

A bed made by a Harpley firm from recycled scaffolding so impressed TV presenter of Grand Designs Kevin McCloud that he chose it as one of his “green heroes” at a national exhibition in Birmingham.

The Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company was exhibiting side-by-side with more than 500 other exhibitors at the Grand Designs Live Show, Birmingham NEC.

“William”, the new bed to the collection designed by Harry Oldfield built by recycling scaffolding, was chosen by Kevin McCloud as one of his Green Hero products and it took centre stage on the stand.

“When we met Kevin, he was charming and he was very interested in what we had done and by the fact that we are a small family company,” said Amanda Oldfield.

“It was amazing to receive such a positive reaction to the beds. Myself, Stephen and the boys, set the company up nine years ago, and to hear such positive comments about our products, gives you a great boost of confidence.”

Harry said: “It was amazing to see people’s reactions, when we told them we’re a family company, and it’s a British product. We really did feel like we’re making Norfolk proud.

“It was also inspiring to meet other British companies, who have had similar struggles to us and made us feel like we’re not alone out there, against the high street imports.”

We've had a 60 Minute Makeover ..... Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Style!!!

So it may have taken more than 60 minutes, however we've had a move around in our showroom. so that you can take your time to appreciate our different styles, in a variety of settings....

Our Front Room .... The Colour Collection

One of the first thing's you shall, when visiting our lovely converted dairy barn. Are our new fabulous colours, from the Colour Collection.

Aimed to add diversity to our wrought iron bed range; the colour collection offers the opportunity, for you to stamp your own style onto one of our robust, hand made iron beds.

Our new front room also showcases our newest bed design... "William" which has been inspired by old scaffolding.

The Barn

Excuse the uneven floor, and the old crumbling limestone walls.... but this was the main area for milking, when our showroom use to be part of an old dairy farm.

But crumbling walls aside, this area offers a great opportunity for you to get unclose and personal with some of our range of wrought iron beds.

Plus you can now hop from one bed to the other, and try out the four different types of mattresses we offer.

The Loft

Firstly an old loft, then an office and now ..... a private area, for our most elegant and ornate iron, brass and nickel beds.

A perfect setting, with old oak beams, balcony and a two story floor to ceiling window; offers light and open space, to backdrop our beautiful beds.

And a major new addition to our showroom is Rosie, she's been absent for a while, but we've bought her back; and offer a wow first impression, when entering the loft.

Our 'Bee'ing Friendly Garden

But who can forget the success our fabulous 'bee'ing friendly garden, at the beginning of summer. With two purposes, one to help increase the variety of Bee's that visit our lovely brick walled garden; but also to create a stunning backdrop for our cast iron wrought iron benches.

Although a little lacking in colour and flowers at the time of year, we're so excited to for spring to return and can't wait to see the Bee's and Butterflies return next year.

Treat Yourself Returns .......

It's been away for a few weeks.... but it's back and with a new day!!! and to celebrate Halloween (slightly early) ..... Harry has created a Halloween Picture cake.... and we've even included the recipe!!!

Harry's Chocolate Halloween Cake!!

For the cake:

190g/6½oz self-raising flour
150g/5oz caster sugar
2 level tbsp cocoa powder
1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 level tsp baking powder
2 tbsp golden syrup
2 free-range eggs
150ml/¼ pint sunflower oil
150ml¼ pint milk

For the filling and Chocolate frosting

750g icing sugar

240g unsalted butter

100ml whole milk

1tsp vanilla extract

50g cocoa powder

For the decoration:

250g marzipan

100g royal icing

black or chocolate icing for piping

orange food colouring

green food colouring

icing sugar for dusting

The method:

For the cake:

Heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and grease and line with greased greaseproof paper the bases of a 8inch straight-sided loose bottomed cake tin.

Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the syrup, eggs, oil and milk, mix with an electric hand whisk and pour into the tins.

Bake in the oven for 45 minutes, or until the cakes springs back when lightly pressed with your fingertips. Turn out on a wire rack, remove the paper and leave to cool.

For the filling and chocolate frosting:

Beat the icing sugar, butter and vanilla extract in a mixer. Once the ingredients are fully combined, slowly add 50ml of whole milk; until you achieve a smooth consistency, that holds it shape.

Separate the mixture, so that a third is left and beat in the cocoa powder; additional milk may be required, to achieve a smooth glossy frosting, that is easy to spread.

Set aside in the fridge, until the cakes have cooled and are required.

For the decoration:

Pumpkin picture in the cake;

Using 200g of marzipan, slowly work in the orange food colouring; using a toothpick, to add a few drops at a time, until the desired colour is achieved.

Dust the work surface with icing sugar, and roll the coloured marzipan into a sausage like shape and set aside.

Repeat the process for the green topper, however this time make a smaller sausage.

To assemble, wet the top side of the orange sausage with a small amount of water, and lay place, the green sausage on top in the centre.

Keep a little of the green marzipan, for the scary pumpkins.

Ghostly Ghouls

Divide roughly 50g of the royal icing, and form sausage like shapes, then tease out the bottom to make the skirt of the ghost.

to finish add some eyes, using a piping bag and a small nozzle; add some eyes with the chocolate or black icing.

Scary Pumpkins

With the remaining royal icing, working in the orange food colouring, until you achieve the desired colouring.

Divide into four (they don't need to be equal), and roll them into balls.

Next make a small hole in the top, and using some remaining green marzipan, make little mini sausage; and place into the hole, to make the tops of the pumpkins.

Using the blunt side of a kitchen knife, slowly make grooves into the side of the pumpkins; and add some eyes and a scary mouth, using the chocolate or black icing.

Assembly

Once your cake has cooled, gently score around the sides and using a bread knife, slowly cut your cake in two.

Next, place the bottom part on your desired serving dish; and cut roughly 6 inches off your sausage, and place your remaining pumpkin sausage, in the centre and make a circle so it meats.

Then cover with the vanilla frosting and then put the top half of the cake on; and cover with the chocolate frosting.

Using the remaining pumpkin marzipan, cut into slices, so you have enough to line around the bottom of your cake.

Next with some white icing, pipe on some cobwebs.

Then finally place you ghostly ghouls and scary pumpkins on top.

Handy Tips:

When working the with the marzipan and royal icing, dust your hands with icing sugar; as this helps from staining your skin; and also helps the marzipan and icing from getting sticky.

When placing the pumpkin sausage in the tin, use a piece of string, To work out the length you require.

Bee-friendly garden opens at Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company’s base at Harpley..

The Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company has opened a wildlife garden at its Harpley base to create a colourful backdrop for its garden products while also creating a beneficial environment for bees.

Harry Oldfield, of the family-run business said: ”It’s been highlighted lately that our native bumblebee is having a rough time of it, with wild flowers being reduced in numbers.

So what better way to support our buzzing neighbour than with an English meadow-inspired garden, with a variety of shapes, sizes and colours to attract the honey-making friend. It’s been amazing to see the increase in bees visiting our garden and watch them work their magic.”

He said several people had attended the recent official opening of the bee-friendly garden and were asking what they could do at home themselves to help bee conservation.

Just as the Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company, has given a helping hand to the bees, Harry said the business had also received support from another firm: “We couldn’t have done this, without the help of the team at Dels Nursery, Fakenham, I went along with the basic idea of having a bee-friendly garden, and the team were happy to help, offering advice and recommendations.

“Not only does this country garden offer a free lunch for the bees, but it also offers a great backdrop and setting for the company’s wrought iron garden benches reclaimed from the London tips.”

Due to health and safety regulations, traditional London park benches were replaced with ones that had to be bolted to the ground and the Harpley firm was able to step in and give the old ones a new lease of life.

"Green Hero Success for Norfolk - Based Bed Firm"

A family-run bed firm enjoying its best ever year has been thrust into a national spotlight by Kevin McCloud, star of popular Channel Four show Grand Designs.

Amanda and Stephen Oldfield’s bed designed out of recycled scaffolding by their son Harry, 27, was chosen by Mr McCloud as a Green Hero product and displayed on his stand at the Grand Design Birmingham exhibition from October 4 to 6.

The accolade has topped a remarkable year for the family who have seen booming orders of their wrought iron range at home and abroad despite what Mr Oldfield senior described as “no help from our bank whatsoever”.

Now based in 3000sq ft premises in a converted dairy in Nethergate Street, Harpley, near Fakenham, his wife said the rollercoaster journey they had been on since setting up the company had not always been so comfortable.

“Ten years ago, when we were living in the Midlands, we had beds delivered for our boys and decided they were not good enough,” she said.

“We thought we could do this better and that’s how it started; it was also a way for us to get back to Norfolk.”

The enterprise, which also includes their other son Jack, 30, had the best possible start when buyers at John Lewis immediately snapped up the chance to order one of Mrs Oldfield’s designs and rolled it out to 24 stores.

A further lucrative order came in from the Cotswold Company but after the early highs, the Oldfields were soon brought down to earth when both contracts abruptly ended.

Setting up the website, wroughtironandbrassbed.co.uk, now accounting for 90pc of their trade, they also opened up a shop in Dersingham, later moving to Harpley for bigger premises. The beds are made in nearby King’s Lynn and Flitcham.

Mrs Oldfield said: “Eighty-five per cent of our sales are outside Norfolk. Some people look online but still want to come and look at the bed here. Someone recently drove over from Buckinghamshire.”

Her husband, a former accountant, said their annual turnover reflected their ups and downs, rising to £450,000 during the John Lewis years and dropping to £210,000 in 2008-9.

He said: “We have since been growing and growing. Last year it was 400,000 and this year we are heading for over £500,000.

“We receive no support from our bank who say they are not lending to retail or manufacturing businesses at the moment,” he said.

“They tell us to come back in two years if we have survived the recession.”

Amanda meets Kevin McCloud at Grand Designs Live Birmingham

Going to Grand Designs Live Birmingham, was always going to be an exciting time for us; after the London show, we felt as if we had a greater idea of what we were doing and following feedback, we felt even more confident about the presentation of our stand this time.

So it was a busy day in the office, planning and scheduling etc, Amanda and Stephen we’re away on holiday; and Harry received an e-mail informing our new ‘William’ bedstead had been personal chosen by Kevin McCloud to feature in his personal section … ‘Green Hero’s’

This was icing on the cake…. Not only now did we feel confident about our stand, but our new wrought iron bed designed by Harry, had also been personally chosen to feature along side many other great products.

A few weeks later, still bussing with excitement then van was packed, William was set up and looked fabulous… and the show started.

However, all things got very excited when on the first day, Amanda was visiting William and talking with people visiting, when she got to meet Kevin McCloud himself…..

We we’re so excited and really pleased that he was genuinely interested in our product…. This really did make the show for us…. Thank You Kevin

Photos that are not of a bed supplied by the Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company, will not be entered into the competition.

By supplying your photo, you are agreeing to the Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Co. having full publishing rights.

The Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Co. have full ownership of any photos supplied; and may use photos at their own discretion.

The winner shall be announched on 25th July; all enteries must be sent in via e-mail, by 23:59 on 24th July. Any enteries sent in after this may stil be used; but not form part of the competition.

Permission from the bed owner, must be granted before taking a photo.

£75 Voucher must be redeemed by the date printed on the voucher; and can only be redeemed on items from our interiors section.
