Valentines Day is only a heartbeat away! This is usually about the time I suddenly remember the kids need cards for the class valentine swap. This year I decided to bypass the boxed cards from the store and avoid the complicated tedious make-at-home varieties that are more headache than fun. My solution: Paper Cupcake Valentines! What kid wouldn’t love mixing and matching chocolate, vanilla and strawberry frosting, and pink and red heart toppings to create custom cupcakes for each of their classmates?

Kids will love mixing and matching chocolate, vanilla and strawberry frosting, and pink and red heart toppings to create custom cupcake valentines for each of their classmates.

WHAT YOU NEED: { Makes 24 cards }

8.5×11 Cardstock – 8 medium brown / 1 dark brown / 1 cream / 1 pale pink / 1 hot pink / 1 dark red (Hobby Lobby offers a large assortment of open-stock papers for less than 50¢ each.)
laser or inkjet printer

scissors (for adults)

xacto knife & cutting mat (for adults)

gluestick

heart paper punch, about 1 inch wide (Martha Stewart Crafts™)

DIRECTIONS: { For Parents }

Print CUPCAKE TEMPLATE onto 8 sheets of light brown paper. Print FROSTING TEMPLATE onto 1 sheet of dark brown, pale pink and cream paper.

2. Carefully trim out the pieces with scissors (or an xacto knife and cutting mat,) and fold where indicated. (Note: To create a clean fold on the cupcake bottom, it is helpful to lightly score the back of the paper with an xacto knife. First prick the score lines with the tip of your knife. Then flip the page over and use the prick marks as guides for your score.)

DIRECTIONS: { For Kids }

1. Punch out heart shapes in pink and red using a heart punch.
2. Using gluesticks, attach frosting tops to cupcake bottom and hearts to frosting tops.
3. Use a silver sharpie marker to label friends names on front side of cupcake and sign your name on the inside.
4. Place finished cupcake inside a 4×5 glassine envelope for a straight-from-the-bakery look, and add candy to make this valentine even sweeter!
