WS2M is proud to announce the opening of the First Fashion and Modeling Agency in Ethiopia !

On April 1st 2008 Mr Girum GEBRESELASSIE and Mr Lionel DEJEAN signed the agreement concluding the opening of the first model agency in Ethiopia and granting the exclusive official representation for Ethiopia of WS2M to Milano Model Agency.

The event was supported by the national Ethiopian TV (ETV) which opened the TV news with it and later granted two specific programs to the new modeling opportunities in ethiopia and later transmitted the whole fashion show(one hour),with a national audience of 90 millions viewers.

This partnership opens a wide range of totally new opportunities for all ethiopian and african models.

The new model agency , supported by the experience and international network of WS2M will provide to all aspiring models the best conditions to start their career in Africa and quickly evolve and start working in major fashion cities such as Paris, Milan, London, New-York.

Not only the ethiopian and parisian teams will scout them but accompany them during all their careers and the multiple steps towarsd top modeling . The team managed by Mr Gebreselassie will soon extend its action to other countries in Africa as already many models from other countries have applied to join the WS2M/Milano agency.

Dasha , a young red hair model from Ukraine, had a test shoot / editorial during her short stay in Paris.

The shoot was exceptional, clothes from two talented promising designers, Anja Austa and Romina Scarpeccio, the swedish photographer duo Doris , and their very sensitive, painting and poetical touch, and the french national TV team which followed Lionel Dejean, for a tv documentary about modleing and scouting.

How to start modeling in Europe ?

To this question, a recent story provides some answers.

Mila, who is russian, was advised by one of her friend model, whom we represent , to contact us.

She sent her snaps and some pictures from her moscow portfolio and some weeks later went to Paris for three tests shoots.

After these, as the season is favourable in Milan, Italy, we went for a tour within our partner model agencies in Milan and she will start next wednesday there. At the right moment for the catalog and editorial season.

Being a model in Tokyo, Japan, means waking up early, jump into the agency 's car

Japan is reputed for offering the highest quality of magazines, famous photographers, prestigious clients and ... best paid jobs ( advertising campaigns, both national and international) in the whole continent.

The high season starts beginning of january and is nearly continuous till june.

Wie droomt er niet van, het gezicht worden van een groot kledingmerk zoals D&G, of het meespelen in een commercial van Ralph Lauren of L'oreal Paris? Dat iedereen tegenwoordig zijn best doet om beroemd te worden blijkt wel aan de toename van aanmeldingen voor programma als Idols, So You Wannebe a Popstar, Hollands Next Topmodel maar ook bij modellen- en castingbureaus, ooit de bewezen weg naar werk, loopt het storm. Er is dus markt, en waar markt is, komen misstanden voor.

Voor inschrijving bij een modellen- of castingbureau worden tegenwoordig veelal inschrijfgelden gevraagd, of zijn zogeheten test shoots (uiteraard tegen soms forse betaling) verplicht. Maar is het eigenlijk wel nodig, geld betalen voor inschrijving of foto's?

Voor dit artikel spraken we met bekende en onbekende modellen, acteurs en professionals uit de industrie. De verhalen over wat de (vaak minderjarige) 'cliënten' overkomen is zijn vaak stuitend en werpen het beeld op van een sector waar 50% van de bureaus er voornamelijk is om geld te verdienen aan de modellen en acteurs, in plaats van andersom.

Om te beginnen bij het begin: hoe werkt een goed bureau? Een goed bureau wordt betaald door opdrachtgevers zoals producenten, grotere bedrijven en instellingen en reclamebureaus. Die bureaus zijn voornamelijk bezig met het winnen van opdrachten en het uitvoeren van opdrachten (met het modellenbestand). Zulke bureaus verdienen hun geld doordat zij een percentage berekenen bovenop de tarieven van de mensen in hun bestand. De goede bureaus werken met een beperkt bestand van 'vaste' krachten waarvoor zij regelmatig werk hebben.

Slechte bureaus daarentegen verdienen geld aan de modellen, door het rekenen van inschrijfgeld en door verplichte betaalde 'test shoots'. Om deze stelling te onderbouwen reisden wij begin dit jaar af naar Parijs, het mekka van de fashion industry, voor de Paris Model and Talent Convention Conference. Wij bezochten daar de workshop over 'scams' (oplichting, red.). De bekende modellenscout Lionel Dejean van WS2M uit Parijs nam deel aan het panel en was bereid het ons nog een keer uit te leggen.

We vroegen Lionel Dejean of het nodig is inschrijfgeld te betalen, of het nodig is te betalen voor 'test shoots' en of het nodig is geld te betalen voor castings. Lionel Dejean vertelde ons: "Blijkbaar, ondanks alle waarschuwingen in de media, zijn er vandaag nog steeds honderden modellen hier aanwezig (in Parijs, red.) die bereid zijn te betalen voor 'diensten' zoals testshoots, portfolio's, inschrijfgeld en castingoproepen. Ik herhaal de stelregel nog maar eens : betaal nooit voor werk of om opdrachten te krijgen. Het is vrijwel altijd oplichting. Je hebt geen betaalde foto's nodig, stuur gewoon zelfgenomen 'kiekjes' zonder make-up en elke professional kan zien of je het in je hebt om succesvol te worden".

Terug in Nederland bezochten wij The Artist Advice, een adviesbureau dat gerund wordt door Jennifer Delano, zelf model en docente aan de Modelacademy. We vroegen haar hoe een goed bureau te werk gaat. Zij vertelde ons dat goede bureaus voldoende hebben aan 'snapshots', eenvoudige foto's zonder make-up. Als een goed bureau in je gelooft, sturen ze je naar een gerenommeerde fotograaf voor (gratis) testshoots. Met 6 tot 8 verschillende foto's heb je een set-card en zo bouw je een portfolio op van gevarieerde en goede foto's. Jennifer Delano : "Een goed bureau verdient geld, door werk en dus geld voor je te regelen. Elk goed bureau heeft een eigen specifieke groep waarvoor zij werk kan leveren, deze bureaus selecteren dan ook streng en hebben een vast bestand. Immers, zoveel werk is er ook weer niet. Slechte bureaus schrijven vrijwel iedereen in, rekenen hier geld voor aan het model of de acteur, en omdat ze vaak geen werk hebben voor iedereen verdienen ze meer aan het bestand dan aan echte opdrachten. Daarom zie je ook dat slechte bureaus proberen het bestand zoveel mogelijk te 'plukken', met inschrijfgeld hier, verplichte en dure fotoshoots daar, vergoedingen voor plaatsing op de website en ga zo maar door. Ik durf rustig te zeggen, 50% van de bureaus zijn oplichters."
