Megan Black Receives Grant

Middle School Science teacher, Megan Black, was presented with a check for $2,478 with the news that she and her students are the recipients of CenturyLink’s 2011 – 2012 Teachers & Technology Grant. Ms. Black was one of 232 applicants for the grant, which seeks to improve student achievement and make science more engaging and interactive.

As outlined in her proposal, Ms. Black will use the grant money for data loggers—hand held devices that collect data and utilize it in real time. “The data loggers can become light sensors, temperature probes, motion sensors, etc., and students can be graphing at the same time they are collecting the data. In this way, the data becomes immediately available and students are allowed to participate in scientific discovery in the same way as trained scientists.”

As a grant recipient, Ms. Black will also have an opportunity to present her program to other educators and share with them how the data loggers are benefitting our students.

CRTs

Students in grades 6 and 7 will take CRTs during May 21 – 29. It is imperative that students are in attendance and on time for these important assessments.

Summer Courses

WSD is offering exciting Summer Courses. The full catalog may be accessed from our home page. Registration deadline is May 25. Enrollment after that day will incur a $25 late processing fee. Those who have already signed up must bring payment—cash, check or credit card—to the front desk before registration is considered complete.

Summer Fun at WSD

Led by WSD Kindergarten teacher, Christie Vanderhoof, students will spend a full week, from 8:30 – 11:30am, exploring the school, getting comfortable in the classroom, participating in reading and storytelling activities, practicing handwriting, and much more. More than anything, students will learn how much fun Kindergarten can be!

(June 11 – 29) is three weeks of age appropriate fitness training Mondays – Thursdays from 8:30 – 10:30am for students entering grades 4 – 8. Coaches Amy Newman and Channing Leitch will spend two days a week with students in Crossfit weight training in the school gym, and two days a week at various trailheads in the Park City area. The camp is designed to be safe, fun, and fast-paced. Students will enjoy learning the value of teamwork, cardiovascular training and safe weight lifting in the gym environment, as well as proper trail etiquette, nutrition, hydration, safety and injury prevention on our local trails.

Dreambox Math

(June 8 – August 17) is an Intelligent Adaptive Learning program for Elementary Math students for students entering grades K – 4 this fall that provides students with individual lessons tailored to their proficiency levels. Current Dreambox students will continue from where they left off in the current school year. New Dreambox students will begin the program and continue with their 2012 – 2013 homeroom teacher. Students may access the program from any location, making this an ideal program for summer vacation.

As part of WSD’s ongoing “Wish Upon a Star” Visiting Artist and Speaker Series, former Senator Jake Garn was on campus May 2 to speak to students about his singular experience as a crew member on a space shuttle mission.

Seventh grader Thomas Occon conducted a flag ceremony and then led students in the “Pledge of Allegiance” to begin the assembly. Students then sang “America the Beautiful,” accompanied by Strings students from 1st, 7th and 8th grades, who were led by 6th grader Zina Horman. Eighth grade students Megan Kitchens and Mya Nguyen introduced Jake Garn, who then took the stage.

“The first thing I want to tell you is how jealous I am of every one of you,” began the former US Senator. “You have amazing opportunities in your future that don’t even exist yet. Things no one has heard of or can even predict.” He went on to explain, “I was 28 years old when the first man flew in space. If anyone back then would have told me I would someday orbit the earth 108 times at 25 times the speed of sound, I would have never believed them. It just goes to show how fast the world moves, how fast technology advances, and how important it is to work hard in school so that you are ready.”

Jake Garn’s pilot training earned him an invitation in 1984 to become the first member of Congress to fly in space. As a Payload Specialist during a NASA mission on the Discovery Space Shuttle in 1985, he traveled over 2.5 million miles in 108 Earth orbits, logging over 167 hours in space.

“I was always interested in flight,” he remembers. “My dad got his wings in 1917 and flew in World War I. I always wanted to be a pilot.” He did go on to serve as a US Navy pilot and in the Utah Air National Guard as a pilot, retiring as a full Colonel in April of 1979. Following his Discovery mission, he was promoted to Brigadier General. He has flown more than 12,000 hours in military and private civilian aircraft.

A highlight of the presentation was a DVD showing footage of Jake Garn and other crew members during the 1985 space shuttle mission. Students were captivated by the documentary, which chronicled medical and other experiments, routine tasks in a weightless environment, an attempted and unplanned satellite repair outside the shuttle, and video of the galaxy taken from the spacecraft. “I wish I had the vocabulary to describe to you what it is like to see the planet Earth from space, to experience zero gravity, and to travel at 25 times the speed of sound. I simply don’t have words.”

Mr. Garn’s message to students encouraged them to best prepare for their future by staying in school and getting the best education they can. “One day, you’ll come back to this auditorium and tell a group of students the amazing things you’ve accomplished, and they will be things that today you only dreamed of.”

*WSD’s “Wish Upon a Star” Visiting Artist and Speaker Series strives to expose students to artists, performers, and other professionals, whose interactions and mentoring inspire students to “dream big.”
