VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Although he saw little action in Canada’s World Cup victory over Qatar, there was a…

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Although he saw little action in Canada’s World Cup victory over Qatar, there was a moment when goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was almost persuaded to get more involved in the offense.

Crépeau, speaking to reporters on Friday after Canada’s dominant 6-0 win the day before, addressed the final moments of the match, when he delivered the ball up the field and red-clad fans in the crowd at BC Place bellowed, “Shoot!”

“I swear I had the little devil here saying do it and the little angel said just pass the ball and go back,” he laughed. “I heard the crowd and I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m not doing it.’”

Crépeau didn’t see a shot on goal from Qatar during Canada’s first-ever World Cup victory. Canada all but sealed its spot in the knockout round with one final group match remaining, on Wednesday against Switzerland.

“Max’s presence was really important yesterday. But let’s be honest, he hardly had anything to do,” coach Jesse Marsch said. “I don’t think in World Cup history, there’s been such a dominant performance. That’s the truth. I think our team will take a lot of confidence from that, and Max will as well.”

The match was chaotic, with a pair of red cards taking Qatar down to nine players and a devastating injury to Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné, who broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg on a tackle from behind by Assim Madibo.

Crépeau was among the teammates who rushed to Koné’s side. He could certainly relate to both the physical and emotional pain that Koné was going through.

In 2022, Crépeau broke his right leg during extra time of Los Angeles FC’s MLS Cup victory over the Philadelphia Union. Crépeau was taken from the field by ambulance and later underwent surgery.

The injury knocked the goalkeeper out of the 2022 World Cup, where he was expected to back up Milan Borjan.

After leaving LAFC, Crepeau remained in Major League Soccer with the Portland Timbers. The 32-year-old currently plays for Orlando City.

In the aftermath of Koné’s injury, Crépeau also consoled 20-year-old defender Luc de Fougerolles.

“Every guy lives the emotions a certain way, and we went through the emotions in that time,” Crépeau said. “Man, it’s so difficult to put into words, but it’s just a moment to say, ‘Hey, you’re not alone. I’m feeling the same thing as you, but we have a job to finish for him.’”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jac Caglianone hit a home run and drove in two as the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 Friday night to clinch the three-game series and snap a three-series losing streak.

Seth Lugo (3-4) pitched six innings in his return from the concussion list after being hit on the forehead by a line drive June 10. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. Alex Lange earned his fifth save.

Michael McGreevy (3-6) took the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Caglianone’s shot was his 10th of the season.

The Cardinals scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Walker, scoring Ivan Herrera. Walker’s 58th RBI gave him the MLB lead, pending the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz’s game later Friday against the Angels.

Herrera drove in Nathan Church with a single in the third to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.

The Royals seized the lead with four runs in the fourth. Lane Thomas led off with a double and scored on a single by Caglianone. Michael Massey’s single drove home Caglianone. After John Rave walked, Isaac Collins drove home Massey and Rave with a double.

The Royals added a run in the fifth on Caglianone’s homer and another on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Tolbert in the sixth.

The Cardinals got three in the ninth off Matt Strahm, but Lange stranded the tying run.

Up next

Following a rare Saturday off-day because of a World Cup match at neighboring Arrowhead Stadium, the Cardinals and Royals conclude their three-game series Sunday. The Cards will send RHP Dusty May (5-6, 3.75 ERA) to the mound to face RHP Stephen Kolek (4-1, 2.68).

HOUSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve hit a three-run home run, Jeremy Peña had two solo shots and the Houston Astros beat the Cleveland Guardians 9-3 on Friday night.

Altuve’s eighth home run of the season came on the first pitch of the night from Guardians reliever Matt Festa. It landed in the first row of the left- field Crawford Boxes.

Peña’s first home run of the night came in the third inning to cut Cleveland’s lead to a run, and then he led off the seventh with his sixth home run of the season and third multi-homer game of his career. He finished the night 3 for 5 with three RBIs.

Altuve added an RBI double later in the inning for a season-high four RBIs.

After failing to complete the first inning in his previous start, Tatsuya Imai (4-3) struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing three runs on six hits over six innings without issuing a walk. He retired the final 11 he faced after giving up a two-run homer to Rhys Hoskins in the third inning.

The 11 strikeouts were a season high by an Astros pitcher, and it’s the first time they’ve had a pitcher strike out at least 11 without walking a batter since Yusei Kikuchi on Aug. 31, 2024.

Houston’s Yordan Alvarez was 1 for 4 with a walk to extend his on-base streak to 25 games.

Tanner Bibee (2-8) was charged with four runs, three earned, over 5 1/3 innings.

Erik Sabrowski allowed two runs over 1/3 of an inning for Cleveland after being reinstated from the injured list before the game.

Up next

Astros RHP Spencer Arrighetti (7-2, 2.57 ERA) was set to face LHP Joey Cantillo (5-3, 4.38 ERA) on Saturday.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A large fire almost completely destroyed a luxury resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, forcing the evacuation of almost 1,700 tourists, authorities said.

Local media reported an Italian tourist died in the fire and several other tourists required medical assistance.

The Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort is located in Bayahibe, a popular destination for U.S. and international tourists on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast.

Authorities reported about 1,690 tourists had to be evacuated from the resort to other hotels and nearby housing facilities because of the massive blaze.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation and the country’s Emergency Operations Center said it appeared the “fire spread rapidly” due to wind and because part of the resort’s roof was made of thatch.

Viva Wyndham’s other nearby resort, the Dominicus Palace, was not damaged by the fire and was operating as normal, the center said.

DETROIT (AP) — Trei Cruz made family history with his major league debut Friday night — and his grandfather and…

DETROIT (AP) — Trei Cruz made family history with his major league debut Friday night — and his grandfather and father were there to watch.

The Detroit rookie started in right field against the Chicago White Sox and batted ninth in the Tigers’ 4-3 victory. When he took the field in the first inning in front of grandfather Jose Cruz Sr. and father José Cruz Jr., they became the fifth family to send three generations to the majors.

“I am really happy for Trei and his family,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “From a baseball standpoint, how cool is it for a family to have three generations of players? It’s a rarity.”

They joined Gus, Buddy, David and Mike Bell; Ray, Bob, Bret and Aaron Boone; Joe P., Joe H. and Casey Coleman; and Sam, Jerry, Jerry Jr. and Scott Hairston.

Cruz Sr. played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1970-74), Houston Astros (1975-87) and New York Yankees (1988) in a career that saw him put up 2,251 hits and 165 homers.

“This is my dream come true,” he said on the Tigers’ broadcast. “I wanted to see our third generation make it, and I’m so proud of Trei. He has worked so hard to get here, and I hope he is here to stay.”

José Jr. reached the majors with the Seattle Mariners in 1997, and moved to the Toronto Blue Jays later that season. He stayed there until 2002, then spent his final six seasons with San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Boston, the Los Angeles, San Diego and the Astros.

“It has been such an exciting 24 hours since we got the news,” he said. “I’m so happy for Trei to get this moment.”

Trei took longer than his ancestors to make the majors — he turns 28 on July 5 — but when Wenceel Perez sustained facial fractures in a freak workout accident this week, he got his chance.

It wasn’t a dream debut — he struck out in each of his three plate appearances before being removed for a defensive replacement in the eighth inning — but it made him a major leaguer.

“He’s had to work hard to get here,” Hinch said. “Not everyone’s journey to the big leagues is a smooth ride. I love that he’s been tough enough to handle it.”

The soon-to-be 26-year-old left winger scored at the end of the first half on a breakaway, casually flicking the ball past Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide. He also assisted on one goal by Matheus Cunha and set up a rebound that led to another.

Vinícius’ breakout performance brought Brazil back in the wake of a 1-1 draw against Morocco last week that left coach Carlo Ancelotti apologizing to fans. After applying steady pressure against Haiti in the opening minutes, Brazil broke through with an offensive torrent.

Vinícius took a bending shot that rebounded off Placide’s gloves and set up Cunha for the put-away that made it 1-0. Thirteen minutes later, he set Cunha up with a long feed that Cunha drove into the net.

In the third minute of injury time, it was Vinícius who corralled a long pass and easily won the 1-on-1 matchup with the diving goalkeeper.

He nearly had another assist halfway through the second half with a one-touch pass to an open Gabriel Martinelli, who launched the ball off the post.

Before the game, the player nicknamed “Viní” had said he thought he had more to show in the tournament — even after scoring the goal that brought Brazil even with Morocco.

Coming off scoring 16 goals in 36 games with Real Madrid, he made an effort to help the defense on several occasions against Haiti and created numerous scoring chances.

Brazil and Morocco are tied atop Group C with four points, followed by Scotland with three.

The Brazilians are ranked sixth in the world; Haiti is 85th and became the first team eliminated from the tournament.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler gritted and grinned his way into contention at the U.S. Open on Friday, bouncing…

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler gritted and grinned his way into contention at the U.S. Open on Friday, bouncing back from a 2-over start at Shinnecock Hills with a classic Scheffler round: calm, patient and close to perfect.

Scheffler’s 2-under 68 put him at even par for the tournament, tied for 11th place and seven strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark, with two more rounds to go. If Scheffler wins Sunday, his 30th birthday, he’ll become the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam.

The four-time major champion accomplished a different feat Friday, snapping his streak of 10 U.S. Open rounds without breaking par. Last year at Oakmont, he tied for seventh at 4 over.

Scheffler was better and more relaxed from the start on Friday after an animated conversation on the driving range with coach Randy Smith following play Thursday.

He birdied the 10th hole, his first of the day in the U.S. Open’s split-tee format, after shooting par there on Thursday while playing in a morning wave of players that got the brunt of strong winds and tough conditions.

Asked how he’d prefer the course be set up for the weekend, Scheffler said: “Doesn’t really matter to me. I just play.”

In all, Scheffler had three birdies and just one bogey in the second round, compared with four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on Thursday.

“I did a good job of keeping a pretty clean card today,” Scheffler said. “I had the bogey there on my fourth hole, which was 13, but outside of that, no bogeys.”

“That’s always nice when you’re coming around a U.S. Open golf course,” he added, “especially one as challenging as this.”

Scheffler, who followed an over-par opening round with a under-par round three other times this season, showed flashes in Friday’s round of his steady, methodical style in winning two Masters and last year’s the PGA Championship and British Open.

Overall on Friday, he hit 12 of 14 fairways off the tee and reached 15 greens in regulation. On Thursday, he hit 12 fairways on Thursday, but just nine greens in regulation.

He came away wanting more. Scheffler buckled his knees and stared at the grandstand on Friday as his 17-foot birdie putt on No. 2 stayed just to the left of the cup. He slung his shoulders in disbelief as a 15-footer on No. 7 curled short.

“I wish I could have made a few more birdies coming in, but I did a lot of good stuff out there,” Scheffler said. “Hit some nice shots. Hit a lot of good putts as well. They were just kind of right around the edge.”

Scheffler, in prime position for a birdie on No. 4, swiped his putter at the green as his putt bobbled to a stop about a foot short of the hole. But in a moment of levity, he broke out into a smile when his caddie, Ted Scott, stated the obvious about what had happened.

The golf ball bounced, Scott said, mimicking the movement with his arm.

“Oh, it did?” Scheffler said, turning to him with a tinge of sarcasm in his voice.

Scheffler’s bogey on No. 13, the shortest par 4 on the course, came after he bunkered his approach shot and missed a 10-foot par putt. After a par-saving up and down from the sand on the par-3 17th, Scheffler didn’t come close to trouble again.

“I think the tournament is halfway done,” Scheffler said. “Yesterday was a day in which you could kind of shoot yourself out of the tournament. The conditions were really, really tough yesterday. Did a good job of hanging in there.”

“I had a tough front nine yesterday, but battled back nicely on the back nine,” he added. “Then had another solid day today to kind of back that up. You know, hopefully do more of the same over the next couple of days.”

Throughout Friday’s round, Scheffler and his playing partners — defending U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun and last year’s U.S. Amateur champion Mason Howell — were forced to wait while groups up ahead played their shots.

Standing on the tee box at No. 2, Scheffler pulled out a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and ate half, ignoring a fan’s pressing query: “What’s that? PB&J? Grape jelly kind of guy?”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Burrows, who helped create volumes of laughter as director of more than a thousand episodes of such classic television comedies as “Cheers,” “Taxi,” “Friends” and “Will and Grace,” died Friday. He was 85.

His family confirmed his death in a statement to People, saying he “passed away peacefully today surrounded by his family.” No location or cause of death was provided.

Burrows spent his career behind the camera specializing in situation comedies. Few viewers recognized him or knew his name, other than to see it flash quickly on the screen in the opening credits. But they knew his work.

Burrows got his start in television relatively late at age 35 in 1974, directing episodes of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “Laverne & Shirley.”

He cocreated “Cheers,” directing 243 of the 273 episodes, as well as all 246 episodes of “Will and Grace.”

He also helmed multiple episodes of such hits as “Frasier,” “Friends” and “Mike & Molly,” and the pilots of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

Sweet spot of script, performance and chemistry

“When I direct a television show, I try to reach that sweet spot where the best script meets the best performance and the best chemistry between performers,” Burrows wrote in his 2022 memoir “Directed by James Burrows.” “Hitting that exact moment, where these factors land in combination, results in the sweetest and most enduring laugh.”

His family said, “Burrows understood that great comedy was never simply about laughter. It was about humanity, connection, and truth. That understanding became the foundation of a career that forever changed television.

“But beyond his remarkable achievements, Burrows will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the people around him. He possessed a rare ability to make everyone better and was known for remembering every person he met by name, making colleagues at every level feel seen, valued, and appreciated,” the family statement said.

The majority of Burrows’ shows aired on NBC, whose “Must See TV” slogan promoted its Thursday night lineup in the early 1990s that included “Friends” and “Frasier.”

“Jimmy Burrows was the man behind the curtain. He knew how to make us laugh, what buttons to push and was the absolute master of getting the most out of every joke,” NBC said in a statement. “His loss to the television comedy world is immeasurable. Every time you have a smile on your face watching ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ ’Taxi, ‘Cheers,’ ‘Will & Grace,’ ‘Friends’ and countless others, think of Jimmy and know he made all our lives funnier.”

Following in his father’s path

Born James Edward Burrows on Dec. 30, 1940, in Los Angeles, he moved to New York when he was 5 years old. He spent five years in the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus until his voice started to change. He attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art.

His father was writer, director and producer Abe Burrows, whose Broadway hits included “Guys and Dolls” and “Can-Can.” The elder Burrows also mentored Larry Gelbart, future creator and producer of the TV show “M(asterisk)A(asterisk)S(asterisk)H.”

The younger Burrows spent hours of his youth in theaters and studios watching his father work, dining with him at such famed New York haunts as Sardi’s and Gallagher’s and meeting celebrities who attended his father’s New Year’s Eve parties.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, Burrows attended the graduate program of the Yale School of Drama, where his classmates included actor-comedian Robert Klein, playwright John Guare and film director John Badham.

At Yale, he was required to take directing classes and he got hooked.

Burrows’ first sitcom experience was as Burl Ives’ dialogue coach on “O.K. Crackerby!” which was directed by his father and ran for one season on ABC in 1965.

From there, he was an assistant on “The Patty Duke Show.” He moved back to New York and worked for Broadway producers Lee Guber, Frank Ford and Shelly Gross. He first met actor Moore while working on the Broadway production of “Holly Golightly,” an adaptation of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” that was directed by his father.

Burrows eventually worked as a stage manager for various road productions, where he met such actors as Hugh O’Brien, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Julie Harris.

Catching a break with Mary Tyler Moore

By 1974, after working in dinner theater and summer stock, he turned on his television and saw Moore’s eponymous TV show. He wrote her a letter asking if there was any opening “small or smaller” at her production company that he could fill, according to his memoir.

Moore’s husband and business partner, Grant Tinker, invited Burrows to Los Angeles to direct an episode of the comedy. He apprenticed for MTM Enterprises, which had four sitcoms on the air at the same time.

Burrows cited his theater background for learning how to give actors direction and block out scenes. He’s credited for being one of the first sitcom directors to increase the typical multicamera television shoot from three to four cameras.

The common thread between Burrows’ shows were the bonds between friends and unrelated families, whether it was the motley crew of regulars meeting at the bar in “Cheers” or the drivers working toward a better life in “Taxi” or the 20-somethings sharing the same apartment building in “Friends.”

“The best sitcoms transcend the screen and reach out and grab the audience by the throat and by the heart,” Burrows wrote in his memoir.

Actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman worked with Burrows over 16 seasons between “Taxi” and “Cheers.”

“He was the very best at his craft. His positive spirit, boundless energy, and tireless work defined what it takes to run a show and keep people laughing,” they said in a statement. “He will always be in our hearts.”

Burrows relished discovering new acting talent while directing more than 75 pilots that were picked up as series.

“Having directed over a thousand shows means that almost any night you can turn on your television or go online and find a show that I directed. I’m very proud of that,” he wrote in his memoir.

In 2019, Burrows was an executive producer on live productions of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” with famous actors re-creating episodes of those 1970s comedies.

“Jimmy was the greatest comedic television director in the history of the medium,” his agent Rick Rosen said in a statement. “He directed the most iconic, defining shows of generations. Always a gentleman, it was an absolute honor to represent him.”

Burrows was married in 1997 to Debbie Easton, whom he met when she worked as a hairstylist on “Frasier.” Daughters Kat Schatzow, Ellie Gluck and Maggie Burrows, who followed her father into directing, are from his first marriage to Linda Solomon, who died in 2004. His stepdaughter Paris is from his wife’s previous marriage. He has a sister, Laurie Burrows Grad, and seven grandchildren.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Vinícius Júnior scored and assisted on one of Matheus Cunha’s two goals as five-time champion Brazil eliminated…

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Vinícius Júnior scored and assisted on one of Matheus Cunha’s two goals as five-time champion Brazil eliminated Haiti from the World Cup with a 3-0 victory on Friday night.

Haiti, the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation that qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, became the first team guaranteed not to reach the knockout round. Meanwhile, the Seleção got the decisive performance they needed.

Cunha, the Manchester United standout, got the start and showed with every surf-and-slide goal celebration why he should have been in the starting lineup in Brazil’s listless 1-1 draw against Morocco. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti made the surprising decision in the opener to instead insert Cunha as a late substitute.

Cunha thrilled the Brazilian fans who made up the bulk of the 68,324 spectators at Lincoln Financial Field when he tapped in a rebound for his first career World Cup goal. He then sent a left-footed strike into the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead in the first half against the overmatched Haitians.

Brazil forward Raphinha, who was subbed out with an injury in the first half, had an early goal disallowed on an offside call that only temporarily muted the yellow-clad Seleção fans in an otherwise festive atmosphere at the home of the two-time Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles — whose cheerleaders did their part to rally the crowd.

Haitian fans danced and sang “Grenadye Alaso” (“Grenadiers to the Attack”), the traditional battle cry of the national team. Brazilians chanted back, reminding them their country is the five-time World Cup champion and the home of the king of soccer: “A thousand goals, a thousand goals, a thousand goals, a thousand goals, a thousand goals! Only Pelé, only Pelé!”

Cunha added to the frivolity in Philadelphia, home to nearly 6,000 Brazilian immigrants, when he flashed his familiar surfing celebration.

Vinícius, whose 32nd-minute goal helped Brazil earn the tie against Morocco, helped Brazil get on the board when his shot was stopped by goalkeeper Johny Placide and Cunha was there to slam home the rebound to make it 1-0. Cunha extended both arms as if trying to catch some tasty waves and was mobbed his teammates.

Vinícius slid a pass through the defense to find Cunha and he powered one high into the net that Placide never had a chance to stop to make it 2-0. Cunha slid on his stomach and mimicked a swimming motion that all but put Haiti in the drink — and validate the Brazilians’ fans decision not to tempt fate and dress the Rocky statue in team gear for bad luck.

Vinícius closed the half with a goal and that was enough to keep Brazil — seeking its first World Cup title since 2002 — happy before it closes Group C play against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Neymar was ruled out of Brazil’s second straight match because of a lingering calf injury.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Washington Mystics are the youngest team in WNBA history, but are growing up fast.

Washington snapped New York’s eight-game winning streak, stunning the Liberty 86-83 on Friday night. It ended a 10-game regular-season losing streak to New York dating to 2023.

It was the second time in the past few games that Washington was able to close out a team in the final seconds, thanks in huge part to the play of second-year players Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen. Iriafen returned to the lineup after missing the last few games with a sprained ankle.

“Huge signs of growth,” coach Sydney Johnson said. “We lost a heartbreaker against Indiana. (Caitlin) Clark made a huge shot — big time play there. We are trying to find ways where we can get better. … Part of this journey we’re on together. I’m proud of them. We applied some of the things we learned.”

New York went up eight in the fourth quarter before Iriafen led the comeback, scoring nine points in the final four minutes, including the go-ahead basket with 27 seconds left.

“I think this one was huge for us,” Iriafen said. “Given we played the Liberty last week and we didn’t play up to our standards. We know they are a great team, but again we have so much fight and we think we can beat anyone, regardless of who they have.”

Washington is slightly younger than the 2020 New York team that had an average age of just over 24 years old according to the website “Across the Timeline.”

The Mystics are back to .500. They haven’t finished above that mark since Elena Delle Donne led the team to a championship in 2019.

Citron feels the Mystics are close to being one of the top teams in the league, but need to do it on a nightly basis.

“I think right now we’re just trying to prove that we can be consistent and deliver this kind of game on a consistent basis,” she said. “We’re just trying to take it game-by-game and get better.”
