Sophie’s leadership and dedication to her teammates showed everyday on and off the water. While it was not the senior year she thought it would be, she has been an amazing Captain, keeping her teammates motivated and persevering through this troubled time.

Not only being a great Captain she leaves us with a fantastic athletic resume. In Sophie’s first year on varsity as a sophomore, she qualified and raced at the USA Youth Nationals winning gold in the Lightweight Four. She then followed that up the next year competing again at Nationals in the Lightweight Eight coming in 13th in the country.

During her four years with WWCrew, she has also led her team to multiple Head of the Charles Regattas and State Championship wins. Sophie never stops, she would continue racing throughout the summers at national and international regattas coming home with countless medals.

We are very proud that she is continuing to row in college for Columbia University while attending Barnard College.

Sophie will be greatly missed, but I know we will not see the last of her!

Update from Coach Mike Baker re: COVID-19

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has officially announced that no high school sport can start before March 30. Even though we are not considered an MIAA sport, we follow their rules.

At the moment, Weston has canceled school until March 19 and Wayland until March 30; the situation is evolving very rapidly and of course, we will keep you posted on any changes, including the start of the season. Until then we are tentatively planning on hitting the water on Monday, March 30. As promised safety is our number one concern.

For the most up-to-date information about COVID-19 can be found on the Centers for Disease Control website or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website.

WWCrew Precautions

Remaining hopeful we will be on the water in April, there are a few procedures we are going to implement to help prevent the spread of illnesses.

All oar and erg handles will be cleaned after every use.

Coxswains will not share headsets.

Hand sanitizer will be available and used frequently.

How You Can Help

There will be NO SHARING of water bottles. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Do not come to practice if you are sick. I know you don’t want to miss practice but is important that you get better and don’t spread your illness to a teammate. You will not be penalized for not coming to practice due to illness.

Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds with soap and water (especially before eating, after going to the bathroom, and coughing into your hand) and don’t touch your face, eyes, mouth, or pick your nose.

Cover your cough (with your inner arm or tissue, not your hand).

Get the flu shot if you haven’t gotten it already as influenza is still circulating in the community, and a stronger immune system is protective.

I know we will have great season and will have fast boats screaming down the course. We just need to stay healthy.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns,

Greetings, potential lightweight athletes and their parents,

This note is for Wayland Weston varsity athletes, which includes novices moving up to varsity and selected novices who are considering rowing as lightweights this spring. (Lightweight girls may have already received much of this information.)

Introduction

You have likely heard the good news that US Rowing has decided to continue with lightweight rowing for this spring. Even better news is that US Rowing is going to be aggressively involved in education and monitoring around lightweight rowing. Top of mind is the long-term health of athletes. This is a major and welcome shift of policy by US Rowing.

The basic principle is that, starting this year, only “natural” lightweights will be allowed to compete in this division. No more “making weight” on race day, no more sweat runs. The limit is 130 pounds for girls, and 150 pounds for boys. Athletes should eat to fuel; your weight is whatever is healthy for your body, and from that, the lightweight roster is determined. If you prefer not to race as a lightweight this spring, that’s great! There will be plenty of fast boats to go around.

With that in mind, here’s the near-term process for the lightweight athlete.

This Week

Think over whether or not you would like to compete as a lightweight for the spring season.

Talk it over with your parents. Sign and have them sign the athlete’s/parent’s permission form (downloadable from US Rowing).

Make an appointment with your physician.

Tell Paul Hoffman (hofferhoff@gmail.com) of your decision, and the date of your physician’s visit. (Paul is coordinating the team’s lightweight registration.)

Within a Month

Have your physician fill out the clearance form, available online. It requires them to provide a fair amount of historical data, so give them warning of what you need beforehand.

By the End of February

All forms—signed by a doctor, parent, and athlete—must be RECEIVED by Paul Hoffman. (Bonus: It’s leap year, but get it to Paul Hoffman at 45 Old Concord Road, Lincoln MA 01773, by February 29.) Keep a copy for your records.

A Note about the Calendar

US Rowing has noted that there are NO EXCEPTIONS to its mid-March deadline for organization registration. It would be a bummer for you to be excluded from racing in the spring because you waited too long to get your forms in. Things can go wrong, doctor’s appointments get canceled because of snow, the dog eats the signed form, etc. Give yourself extra time.

Final Framing Comment

It’s important to remember that WWRA is NOT primarily a lightweight program. Over the course of the spring, athletes of all weights will be placed in boats that have the best chance of doing well. It is possible that one or more of these boats will be in lightweight events. Getting into a potential lightweight boat will likely be a competitive situation, so you should choose the weight class at which you feel strong and vibrant. It is quite possible that some athletes preparing as lightweights will not actually end up in a lightweight boat. The most important thing is that you do what is healthy for your body. Eat to fuel, be strong and healthy, and then find out if that means that you will race as a lightweight.

Team USA Grabs Two Medals at World Rowing Under-23 Championships

From USRowing.org, July 27, 2019: Team USA earned two medals, one silver and one bronze, on day one of finals at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

The lightweight women’s pair, rowed by Emily Molins (Wilmette, Ill.) and Sarah Maietta (Wayland, Mass.), crossed the line in 7:35.94 to take second. After holding third place through the first 1500 meters, the duo made a move, surging into second place and passing the Germans.

“We started sprinting 500 [meters out] just because we were thinking ‘let’s go for it.’ We really didn’t know, so we’d figure we’d go for it and we crossed the line and I looked over and figured I could see part of Germany so we were probably second. I was very relieved,” said Maietta.

They had faith in their training and knew it could get them to this point in racing.

“I think we all came off of some tough collegiate racing,” said Molins. “We were a little tired, but really excited this summer to get together and prepare together. It was a lot of fun. It was a challenging boat, but I think being able to race together at [this] international competition made it all really worth it.”

“We had a really good group of girls pushing us at the camps, so any of our speed is partly their speed. They were the ones pushing us just like that in last 500 [meters] all summer, so it’s what we’ve been preparing for,” said Maietta.

Finishing in the gold and bronze medal positions were Italy and Germany, which finished in 7:30.98 and 7:37.32, respectively.
