Jeddah Light

Jeddah Light is an active lighthouse in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With a height of approximately 436 feet (133 m) it is the tallest lighthouse in the world, surpassing the previous record held by the 352 feet (107 m) Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. It is located at the end of the outer pier on the north side of the entrance to Jeddah Seaport.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie that took place near Ohio's South Bass Island, in which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a fleet to victory in one of the most significant naval battles to occur in the War of 1812. Located on an isthmus on the island, the memorial also celebrates the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States that followed the war.

Yokohama Marine Tower is a 106 metres (348 feet) high lattice tower with an observation deck at a height of 100 metres in Naka Ward, Yokohama, Japan.
The light characteristic is marked by a flash every twenty seconds, whereby the light's colour is alternating red and green. Originally, at night, the tower shaft itself was lit green and red according to its markings, but now, after the reopening on May 2009, the lights are white.

Île Vierge (Breton language: Enez-Werc'h) is a 6-hectare (15-acre) islet lying 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) off the north-west coast of Brittany, opposite the village of Lilia. It is in the commune of Plouguerneau, in the département of Finistère. It is the location of the tallest stone lighthouse in Europe, and the tallest "traditional lighthouse" in the world. The International Hydrographic Organization specifies Île Vierge as marking the south-western limit of the English Channel.

The Lighthouse of Genoa (Italian: faro di Genova, but simply called Lanterna), is the main lighthouse for the city's port. Besides being an important aid to night navigation in the vicinity, the tower serves as a symbol and a landmark for the City of Genoa. At 249 feet (76 m) it is the world's fifth tallest lighthouse and the second tallest "traditional" one, built of masonry. Since 1543 and until the construction of the lighthouse on Île Vierge in 1902, it was the tallest lighthouse in the world. Considered as a whole with the natural rock on which it stands, as it is commonly perceived and represented, its height is 383 feet (117 m).

The Stade de France is the national stadium of France, just north of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis. Its seating capacity of 81,338 makes it the fifth-largest stadium in Europe. The stadium is used by the France national football team and French rugby union team for international competition. Originally built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the stadium's name was recommended by Michel Platini, head of the organising committee. The stadium also hosts the main French domestic cup finals, which include the Coupe de France (both football and rugby), Coupe de la Ligue, Challenge de France, and the Coupe Gambardella, as well as the Top 14 rugby union championship match.

The stadium is also used for music concerts with Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, U2, Céline Dion, Muse, AC/DC, Beyoncé, Jay Z, Rihanna, Coldplay, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Madonna, The Police and Mylène Farmer having performed here. Iguazu Falls, Iguazú Falls, Iguassu Falls, or Iguaçu Falls (Spanish: Cataratas del Iguazú [kataˈɾatas ðel iɣwaˈsu]; Guarani: Chororo Yguasu [ɕoɾoɾo ɨɣʷasu]; Portuguese: Cataratas do Iguaçu [kataˈɾatɐʒ du iɡwaˈsu]) are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The Iguazu River rises near the city of Curitiba. For most of its course, the river flows through Brazil, however, most of the falls are on the Argentine side. Below its confluence with the San Antonio River, the Iguazu River forms the boundary between Argentina and Brazil.

Iguazu Falls are located where the Iguazu River tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau, 23 kilometres (14 mi) upriver from the Iguazu's confluence with the Paraná River. Numerous islands along the 2.7-kilometre-long (1.7 mi) edge divide the falls into many separate waterfalls and cataracts, varying between 60 to 82 metres (197 to 269 ft) high. The number of these smaller waterfalls fluctuates from 150 to 300, depending on the water level. Approximately half of the river's flow falls into a long and narrow chasm called the Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese). The Devil's Throat is U-shaped, 82 metres high, 150 m wide, and 700 m long (269×492×2,297 ft). Placenames have been given also to many other smaller falls, such as San Martín Falls, Bossetti Falls, and many others.

Devils Tower (Lakota: Matȟó Thípila ("Bear Lodge") or Ptehé Ǧí ("Brown Buffalo Horn"), Arapaho: Wox Niiinon) is an igneous intrusion or laccolith in the Bear Lodge Mountains (part of the Black Hills) near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,114 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.

Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).

In recent years, about 1% of the Monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

The Juche Tower (more formally, Tower of the Juche Idea) is a monument in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, named after the ideology of Juche introduced by its first leader Kim Il-sung.

The 170-metre (560 ft) structure is a four-sided tapering 150-metre (490 ft) spire – the tallest in granite – containing 25,550 blocks(365 × 70: one for each day of Kim Il-sung's life, excluding supplementary days for leap years), dressed in white stone with seventy dividers and capped with a 20-metre (66 ft)-high 45-ton illuminated metal torch. It is possible to ascend the tower by elevator and there are wide views over Pyongyang from the viewing platform just below the torch.

The Ryugyong Hotel (Korean: 류경호텔) (sometimes anglicised as Ryu-Gyong Hotel or Yu-Kyung Hotel) is a 105-story pyramid-shaped skyscraper under construction in Pyongyang, North Korea. Its name ("capital of willows") is also one of the historical names for Pyongyang. The building is also known as the 105 Building, a reference to its number of floors. Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 as North Korea entered a period of economic crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union.

After 1992 the building stood topped out, but without any windows or interior fittings. In 2008 construction resumed. In 2011, the exterior was completed. The opening of the hotel has been scheduled several times but postponed.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Patrick (colloquially St Patrick's Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, and seat of its archbishop, currently Denis Hart.

In 1974 Pope Paul VI conferred the title and dignity of minor basilica on it. In 1986 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral and addressed clergy during his Papal Visit.
The cathedral is built on a traditional east-west axis, with the altar at the eastern end, symbolising belief in the resurrection of Christ. The plan is in the style of a Latin cross, consisting of a nave with side aisles, transepts with side aisles, a sanctuary with seven chapels, and sacristies. Although its 103.6-metre (340 ft) length is marginally shorter than that of St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, St Patrick's has the distinction of being both the tallest and, overall, the largest church building in Australia.

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei province, China. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest power station in terms of installed capacity.

Except for a ship lift, the dam project was completed and fully functional as of July 4, 2012, when the last of the main water turbines in the underground plant began production. Each main water turbine has a capacity of 700 MW. The dam body was completed in 2006. Coupling the dam's 32 main turbines with two smaller generators (50 MW each) to power the plant itself, the total electric generating capacity of the dam is 22,500 MW.

As well as producing electricity, the dam is intended to increase the Yangtze River's shipping capacity and reduce the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space. The Chinese government regards the project as a historic engineering, social and economic success, with the design of state-of-the-art large turbines, and a move toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions. However, the dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites and displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides. The dam has been a controversial topic both domestically and abroad.

В проектировании небоскрёба участвовал премьер-министр Малайзии Махатхир Мохамад, который предложил построить здания в «исламском» стиле. Поэтому в плане комплекс представляет собой две восьмиконечные звезды, а архитектор добавил полукруглые выступы для устойчивости.

Для строительства отводилось 6 лет (1992—1998 гг.). Башни возводились двумя разными компаниями для создания конкуренции и повышения производительности. В ходе геологических изысканий выяснилось, что предполагаемая площадка для строительства находится одной частью на краю скальной породы, а другой — на мягком известняке. После постройки на данном месте таких тяжёлых башен, одна из них неминуемо просела бы. В итоге здания полностью перенесли на мягкий грунт, сдвинув на 60 метров, и вбили сваи на глубину более чем 100 метров. На данный момент это самый большой бетонный фундамент в мире.

Небоскрёб отличается не только колоссальными размерами, но и сложностью конструкции. Площадь всех помещений здания — 213 750 м², что соответствует площади 48 футбольных полей. Сами башни занимают в городе 40 гектаров. В Башнях Петронас расположены офисы, выставочные и конференц-залы, художественная галерея.

The Great Strahov Stadium (Czech: Velký strahovský stadion) is a stadium in the Strahov district of Prague, Czech Republic. When it was an active sports venue, it had a capacity of around 250,000, making it the largest stadium in the world.

Today, it is no longer in use for competitive sports events; it is a training centre for Sparta Prague, and is used to host pop concerts. The stadium is sited on Petřín hill overlooking the old city. It can be accessed by taking the Petřín funicular up the hill through the gardens.

Construction began based on plans by the architect Alois Dryák, on a wooden stadium in 1926, which was replaced by concrete grandstands in 1932. Further construction occurred in 1948 and 1975. The playing field, surrounded by seating on all sides, is 63,500 square metres. The stadium currently serves Sparta Prague as a training centre with 8 football pitches (6 pitches of standard sizes and 2 futsal pitches).

Plassenburg is a castle in the city of Kulmbach in Bavaria. It is one of the most impressive castles in Germany and a symbol of the city. It was first mentioned in 1135. The Plassenberg family were ministerial of the counts of Andechs (later the dukes of Andechs-Meranien) and used as their seat the Plassenburg. The House of Guttenberg, a prominent Franconian noble family, traces its origins back to 1149 with a Gundeloh v. Blassenberg (Plassenberg). The name Guttenberg is derived from Guttenberg and was adopted by a Heinrich von Blassenberg around 1310. From 1340, the Hohenzollerns governed from Plassenburg castle their territories in Franconia till 1604. The Plassenburg was fortress and residence for the Hohenzollerns.

It was destroyed in 1554 at the end of the second Margravian war (1552–1554) of margrave Albert Alcibiades. The Plassenburg was later rebuilt by the architect Caspar Vischer as an impressive stronghold and as a huge palace. In 1792, Margrave Alexander sold the Plassenburg to his cousin, the King of Prussia. A combined Bavarian and French army under the command of Jérôme Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, besieged the Plassenburg in 1806. In 1810, Kulmbach became Bavarian and the castle was used as a prison and as a military hospital. During the second world war, the Organisation Todt used the Plassenburg as a training camp and recreation home. Today, it is a museum and a venue for cultural events.

It contains a significant collection of Prussian military artifacts and portraits.

Замок Драхенбург является одним из крупнейших дворцовых сооружений XIX столетия на территории земли Северный Рейн — Вестфалия. Был возведён в 1882—1884 годах по заказу барона Стефана фон Зартера, богатого биржевого маклера из Бонна, получившего дворянский титул от одного из саксонских герцогов, сына трактирщика. Проект здания был создан дюссельдорфскими архитекторами Лео фон Аббема и Бернгардом Тюзхаусом, а затем доработан жившим в Париже архитектором Вильгельмом Гофманом, учеником знаменитого Эрнста Фридриха Цвирнера. Замок богато украшен настенной живописью и гобеленами, на которых изображены сцены из героического прошлого Германии, древних саг и легенд. Особенно впечатляют так называемые «комнаты Нибелунгов» с фресками, повествующими о событиях этой германской легенды.

Замок Драхенбург построен в неоготическом стиле, и представляет собой некий синтез из дворца, замка и виллы. Он расположен посреди обширного парка, на правом берегу Рейна, на склонах горы Драхенфельс, близ города Кёнигсвинтер. После смерти барона фон Зартера в 1902 году, не оставившего завещания и не имевшего детей, Драхенбург переходит к его племяннику Якову Бизенбаху, открывшему здесь резиденц-отель для богатых путешественников. В более поздние годы в стенах замка находился католический интернат, железнодорожное училище и даже национал-социалистская военная школа. Бардарбунга (исл. Bárdarbunga, ['baurðarbuŋka]) — подлёдный вулкан в районе Нордюрланд-Эйстра на юго-востоке Исландии. Включает в себя близлежащие объекты: стратовулканы, вулканические разломы, вулканические хребты, кратеры.

Высота вулкана составляет 2009 м. Он находится к северо-востоку от вулкана Гримсвотн на северо-западной оконечности ледника Ватнайёкюдль. Является стратовулканом подлёдного типа, расположен в кальдере, глубина которой составляет около 700 метров. Вулканические разломы, идущие от Бардарбунги, связаны с вулканами Аскья и Торфаёкюдль.

Вулкан извергался постоянно на протяжении современного периода. Наиболее крупный лавовый поток, извергавщийся из нескольких вулканических трещин вулкана, достигал 21 км³ в объёме. Последнее крупное извержение произошло в 1477 году с крупным выбросом тефры. Тогда шкала вулканических извержений достигала 6 уровня. Незначительные извержения были и в последующие годы; последнее из них произошло в 1910 году. Позже время от времени в данном районе наблюдались незначительные подземные толчки.

Активность вулкана снова стала возрастать примерно с 2007 года.

Монастырь Эскориал — монастырь, дворец и резиденция короля Испании Филиппа II. Расположен в часе езды от Мадрида у подножия гор Сьерра-де-Гвадаррама. Архитектурный комплекс Эскориал вызывает самые различные чувства: его называют и «восьмым чудом света», и «монотонной симфонией в камне» и «архитектурным кошмаром».

В Эскориале находятся два больших Новых музея. В одном из них представлена история строительства Эскориала в рисунках, планах, строительных инструментах и масштабных моделях. Во втором, в девяти комнатах, хранятся полотна XV—XVII веков начиная от Босха до Веронезе, Тинторетто и Ван Дейка, а также художников испанской школы. Габсбургов поэтому считают величайшими покровителями искусств своего времени. Особенно полно представлены художники фламандской школы и Тициан, придворный художник Карла V.

Ивангородская крепость (Ивангород, Ленинградская область, Россия) была построена летом 1492 года на правом берегу Нарвы. И была названа в честь царствовавшего в то время Ивана III Васильевича. Целью возведения Ивангородской крепости была защита Новгородской земли со стороны её западных соседей. Ивангород стал форпостом на западе русской земли, на границе с Ливонией, где на левом берегу реки с XIII века стояла крупная крепость рыцарей Тевтонского ордена (Нарвская крепость).
