Fed Biz Ops is an official United States government website which advertises business opportunities created by the 2009 stimulus package. On the same day that President Barack Obama signed the package, the first jobs appeared on the site.

On the Federal Business Opportunities website, buyers or vendors, usually government representatives, can upload new opportunities as well as edit and later award these opportunities. Members of the general public can also access these listing, though through a different area on the website. The site also highlights particular opportunities, including information on how contractors and business owners can compete for reconstruction opportunities in Haiti, following that country’s devastation following the recent earthquake.

Fed Biz Ops Helping With the Stimulus

On the day that the stimulus bill was signed, the first business opportunity was listed on the website. That opportunity was for a small business construction project for the U.S. Navy, $400 million to be split between five small businesses. The winners will conduct construction, demolition, repair and renovation at Navy facilities around the world.Federal Times: Recovery Act solicitations hit the street (February 23, 2009)9

Other early business opportunities on the Fed Biz Ops website were -

• One from the National Institutes of Health for new approaches to alcoholism treatments
• An Air Force contract to upgrade electrical lines; statewide recycling services for Maryland
• A plan by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration to generate hourly reports on real-time passenger waiting times.

“Huh?” you say. “What?” you ask.

Well, if you read my blog post Google Goes Loco, Oops, I Mean Local on All Searches you’ll know that since April of 2009 Google has been serving local results with its search results. You see from its own research Google has discovered that 70% of its searches is done with local intent. That means 70% of the time people are searching Google, they are looking for products or services from “local” businesses. Since Google wants to stay on top as the #1 Search Engine, the people at Google decided that they better make provisions for local business search results…so voila, Local Search was born. By the way, Bing and Yahoo followed suit with their own local search results, as well.

So What Is Local Search Exactly?

Local Search is the Internet’s version of the phone book…but it’s faster, much more dynamic, and very responsive. It’s kind of like the phone book on steroids….but better!

You’ve probably seen local search results and didn’t even know it. Local results consist of a Google Map and a listing of 1-7 businesses to the right of the map (similar to the image below).

These same listings also appear on Google Mobile which can be accessed using today’s smart phones. The listings conveniently provide all the information that a prospective customer needs in order to visit or contact the business including phone numbers, website links, email addresses, reviews and a whole lot more. Can’t you see already how important it is for a small business owner to get their business listed in the Local Search Results? And the good news for you is that they don’t know how to do it.
