For this month’s “Way Cool Website” pick we wanted to highlight Jewish American history and culture in observance of Jewish American Heritage Month.  Jewish American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in May.

This month’s website pick resulted in a tie between Jewish American Heritage Month and The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

On Saturday, 30+ authors will be arrayed throughout downtown Asbury Park from 1:00pm – 4:00pm on Saturday, April 20. They will be here to discuss, sign and sell their books within the Shoppes at the Arcade, 658 Cookman Avenue, and at venues up and down Cookman Avenue.

The Asbury Park BookFest is designed for people to discover the wealth of talent from New Jersey and meet the writers behind the words. They will all have their titles available for sale that day and will themselves be available to discuss and sign their books. The writers hail from Asbury Park, nearby towns such as Ocean Grove, Fair Haven and locales throughout the state from the Pine Barrens to the Star-Ledger newsroom.

April 14, 2013 – April 20, 2013 is National Environmental Education Week!

The ClientEarth is charity founded, run, and supported by lawyers and other environmental activists.  Their goal is to bring about environmental change through positive legislative action.

Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican painter and artist who was best known for her remarkably beautiful self-portraits.  Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, Mexico on July 6, 1907 and died on July 13, 1954

“Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.” [Source:  Wikipedia's Frida Kahlo entry]

Kahlo’s work has been featured at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Fundación Proa, Buenos Aires (a joint exhibit with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York), the Frida Kahlo Museum (website is in Spanish), in Coyoacán, Mexico, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York, the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, California, among other places.

March is Women’s History Month.  Our “Way Cool Website” pick for this month is the National Women’s History Museum’s Online Exhibits.

The National Women’s History Museum, founded in 1996 “researches, collects and exhibits the contributions of women to the social, cultural, economic and political life of our nation in a context of world history”.  According to the museum’s founder, Karen Staser:

AARP Free Income Tax Preparation starts Friday, February 15, 2013 and ends Saturday, April 13, 2013.

Certified AARP accountants and/or tax preparers will be here at Asbury Park Public Library on Fridays from 9:00am – 12:00pm and on Saturdays from 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

Due to time constraints only a certain number of clients will be served each Friday or Saturday.  Please arrive early as clients will be taken on a first-come first-served basis.
