Cafe 103 in combination with Beverly's Pantry, both owned and operated by Shirley Makinney, are adding some new casual dining specials and options.

In addition to their popular Sunday brunch, from 10am to 2pm which has wonderful classic dishes such as eggs Benedict, steak and eggs and buttermilk pancakes, as well as a kids breakfast selection, the "Pantry" will soon offer a light breakfast service featuring their wonderful Intelligentsia coffee, a selection of pastries, granola and other light fare at their new cafe tables next to the beautiful cooking class area. This area has been expanded to better accommodate the popular private parties and cooking classes that take place in this gorgeous, "cooking theatre".

The "Cafe" under the direction of Chef Kevin Koziol is now preparing a delicious "Comfort Foods" menu featuring such beloved dishes as chicken and dumplings and lamb shank. The current winter lunch menu has wonderful options such as pannini sandwiches, flat bread pizzas and juicy half pound sirloin burgers. The evening menu is now offering such hearty delicacies as Beef Wellington, Grilled Barramundi and Rack of Lamb.

A private party or get together can be arranged for groups as small as six in the beautiful pantry kitchen. For a very reasonable charge you can work with the owners to create your own unique menu for that special occasion. We have worked with Shirley, Christy and her staff to arrange private parties and the food, service and of course beautiful contemporary atmosphere, whether it was in the Cafe or the gourmet, cooking class kitchen was impeccable!

Yes, The "Big Green Elephant", is the looming possibility of thousands on Western Ave on March 14. My guess is some form of it is going to happen. So let's stop saying, what if, and instead say what are we going to do?

I am happy for the opportunity for the bar owners, many of whom I know personally, to make some money. But, they need to take responsibility for their clients just as they normally would. They should make sure their clients don't exit their establishment and disrupt the neighbors. They should make sure they don't over serve and that everyone is 21. Since they are the only ones that will benefit from the pub crawl, why don't they send out a crew of employees after to pick up trash in the neighborhood the next morning? There should be no lingering out in front and maximum capacity rules should apply, if we don't want to see a Beverly E2 disaster!

The 22nd District should consider setting up a holding pen in a nearby empty lot and arrest every single visitor that litters, urinates, defecates, fornicates, regurgitates, passes out..you get the idea...in our neighborhood, (Ahhh memories of parade day!). If this is going to happen, and it probably will, then this is the year we should set the precedent with regard to how we respond. Let's not wait till it gets too unwieldy, like the parade, and then try to stop it completely. Let's be proactive people or the "Big Green Elephant", will trample us!

Beverly, Morgan Park and Neighboring Areas Surviving and Thriving in this Economy!

The residents of Beverly, Morgan Park, Mt Greenwood and some surrounding suburban areas have survived the Real Estate disaster better than they think. The homes above are just a sample of the beautiful homes that we enjoy living within and looking at every single day! In Beverly and Morgan Park we have had strong home sales and even bench mark closings in the last 9 months that have proven that the quality, unique and historic nature of our home stock as well as the strength and support of the people and communities will continue to prevail even in the most difficult times.

Where there have been sporadic, foreclosures or board ups, in our areas, they have not drastically effected the value of the nearby homes for sale. These are the homes that have been well maintained through the years and are priced accordingly. Buyers in this market know the difference. They are willing to pay a little more in a good solid neighborhood, with great schools, parks, neighbors and access to transportation. They know this is still a solid investment. They would rather purchase and live here then get a "great deal" in a transitioning suburb or neighborhood full of foreclosures, not knowing if and or when that "great deal" will ever pay off.

We have also had new business's enter the market and they have found support and success. If that is not enough to convince people that the Beverly and Morgan Park areas and nearby communities such as Mt. Greenwood are here to stay then nothing will!

So, I make these comments in a cautionary way. I suggest that we need to go out and support our local business's even more. We do not want them to go the way of a few retailers that have recently closed...The World Music Company and Beverly Flower Shop - Beverly, The Jungle Gym in West Beverly, Sonoma Cafe and Coffee Shop and Baja Sol Tortilla Grill - Evergreen Park and Corrigan's Bar and Grill in Mt Greenwood, to mention a few. Our hearts go out to the owners and employees that were dependent on these business's for their livelihood. We wish them success in their next endeavor.

I hope I do not have to add more names to this list in the near future. Please spend your money and do ALL OF YOUR SHOPPING and DINING with LOCAL INDEPENDENT MERCHANTS and RESTAURANTS. Let your friends and relatives know about your plan and encourage them to do the same. This fits in with the spirit of the neighborhood and economy, will make everyone involved happy, make the neighborhood more prosperous and the gift or experience will have even more significance.

Because of this blog and my occupation I spend a great deal of time talking to retailers, restauranteurs, and business people. I hear the same thing all the time, "Where are all of the customers?", "If things don't change I don't know if I can make it." My heart goes out to these owners. I get frustrated when I hear about my neighbors and friends taking their dining and shopping dollars outside of the neighborhood or hanging out, shopping, or dining at a NATIONAL CHAIN. Yet these are the same people that will complain when we have no unique restaurants or shops and instead have vacant storefronts. Yes, times are tough and people are tightening the purse strings but we know we still go out to eat periodically and we have to shop for birthday gifts and the necessities of life.

Here are a few suggestions:

The next time you need a pound of coffee instead of going to the super market buy a fresh pound from your favorite local cafe! Beverly Bakery 105th & Western is ROASTING IT'S OWN! It is the only coffee roaster south of Bridgeport! Other options are the Beverly Coffee Shop 111th & Fairfield, Favia 107th at Metra, Blue Moon 103rd at Metra. Beverly's Pantry sells Intelligentsia which is what they serve next door at Cafe 103. All the coffee will be 100% better, fresher, comparably priced and the cafe owner will sincerely appreciate your business.

The next time you plan a girls' night out or dinner with friends, STAY IN THE NEIGHBOROOD! Support the restaurants or they won't be here for us. You're also supporting the waitstaff and employees that live local and need your tips! DAT Donut in Morgan Park. "Donuts Too Good to Dunk"

I finally had a chance to stop into DAT Donut at 1979 W. 111th St, just across from the Metra Station and now I know what all the buzz is about.

The donuts are excellent! I had a buttermilk donut, which I can rarely find and it was smooth and delicious! I treated a friend to the custard filled bismark and he gobbled it down before I could say, "Where's DAT donut?" I was able to see first hand what the "Big DAT" looks like and I assure you, it is ginormous! For $2.59 it is the equivalent of about 5 donuts rolled into one! So many items looked so yummy. I could have easily selected the large, puffy, cinnamon rolls or the sticky, apple fritter or any of the many styles of fresh cooked treats.

I am so happy that there is now a delicious donut, breakfast, sandwich and frozen custard shop at the 111th Street Metra stop. This is the station where I boarded to go downtown, having grown up nearby and now it has the donut shop it deserves and more! Stop by soon. Kool & The Gang - Ladies Night
My how times have changed! I was thrilled to hear about Tuesday, Ladies Day at BROTHERS Hand Car Wash! $3 off! Whoo Hoo! I used to get excited about Ladies Night at a bar, $2 Pitcher Nights at The Stabilizer in West Lafayette, Ind, Wednesday, Ladies Night at The Devil House, Tempe AZ..I digress..

I love BROTHERS Hand Car Wash & Detail Center at 9816 S. Kedzie! Mauricio, the Manager, and his guys do a great job, they are good and quick and leave you sparkling and clean. While you are waiting you are comfy in their waiting room with a TV and bowl of candy,(I guess that's for the kids but I took a dum dum). They are not sexist! MONDAY is MENS DAY and TUESDAY is LADIES DAY $3 off the wash of your choice. I have a small SUV it is normally $15 so I received $3 off, $12 bucks for a hand car wash, what a deal! I am going back for more! This blog post has a lot of innuendos, what else can you do with a car wash! P.S. The gas next store is typically THE CHEAPEST GAS on the South side at Supersonic, don't PASS it up. There we go again with the puns!

A Childs Paradise at the Children's Museum in Oak Lawn

The Children's Museum, 9600 E Shore Dr, Oak Lawn, IL 60453-2911 in the new shops in "Downtown Oak Lawn" next to the metra train station is a child's dream come true and an answer to a parents prayers! I recently checked it out with my daughter, her BFF,(best friend for life)and her Mom, my BFF, and we had a great time! We paid the "non-member" fee of $6 per person and it was beyond worth it! The first floor is filled with activities geared for younger children but our girls found plenty to do and enjoy for a while. We then moved upstairs and that's when the fun really began. My friend and I sunk down into a big comfy leather couch and caught up on news and solved the problems of the world while our little angels had the run of the place. They moved from the mini veterinarian office to the grocery store to the dress up theatre and everything in between. We were there for 3 hours and we never even made it over to the arts and crafts area and they barely played in the tree house and camp grounds not to mention the tool and workshop that was still, "under construction" no pun intended. This will definitely become a regular stop in our repertoire of places to go, especially this winter. They also have private party space for birthdays etc.. Go online, call or stop by for more info. The Essence of Beverly/Morgan Park and Tony the Knife Guy!

I guess you have figured it out by now, but I LOVE the south side and especially BEVERLY and MORGAN PARK! I love it that I can walk, bike or drive in about a minute to a wonderful local grocery store like County Fair enjoy home cooked meals at Ken's Restaurant, when I don't feel like cooking, or hang out with some authentic Irish folks at Keegans Irish Pub,(that is when I get bored with the authentic Irish dude that I live with!). Never! I can walk with my daughter to a beautiful tree filled park like Crescent Park or any of the other beautiful parks in the area and enjoy an ice cream treat at the Beverly Coffee Shop at 111th and Fairfield just steps from where I grew up. All the while meeting and greeting wonderful friends old and new! Well, I made a new friend the other day. I heard the jingle, jingle of Tony the knife guy and his custom made sharpening cart. He has been traveling around Beverly and Morgan Park for years sharpening residents knives and tools. When I went out to meet him several other neighbors brought their wares out and we had a little impromptu get together while waiting for our things to be sharpened. I had a little chat with Tony and found out he is from the southern area of Italy, "down in the boot", and has been here in this country for many years. I found out he used to bake pastries in Italy when he was young. He told me about one of his specialties and promised me he would bring a sample to me. A few days later he arrived at my door with lovely white pastry box and inside were the delights that he enjoyed making long ago. They were thick, crusted, spiral shaped, horns filled with a creamy, lemony, ricotta cheese mixture, bellisimo! Life is strange and wonderful! Sometimes I just stop and think about how much I enjoy life and all of it's interesting twists and turns and living in Beverly/Morgan Park is a big part of the reason why.

Crescent Park in Morgan Park - Remodeled and Beautiful!

Well, they did a lovely job remodeling Crescent Park and I love what they did! You can find Crescent between 107th Place and 108th and from Hoyne to Bell.
They kept the color palette to a minimum and the dark purples and blues blend in nicely with the beautiful trees and foliage in this medium sized park in the middle of a historic residential area. There are unique playground items and it is very accessible and user friendly for small children. Parents can sit and relax on the new benches and have a clear view of their child at all times! The park also has a beautiful new baseball diamond and the two tennis courts are often empty and waiting for the next player. Take advantage of these warm days and squeeze in a visit before it is too late! Then you can still enjoy the park on your brisk walks along the paths in the snow!

Mt. Greenwood Park - The "Bing Bong" Park!

My daughter and I have nicknames for all of the parks we frequent, I call Hurley Park "Squirelly, she calls it Curley", we call Beverly Park, "The baseball park", (her cousin plays there), Kennedy is Grandma's Park,(it's near Grandma's house), Munroe is "The dog park", Crescent is "the log cabin park",(I hope it retains some of the charm after the remodel!), and Mt. Greenwood Park located at 3721 W 111th St Chicago, IL 60655(312) 747-6564 is the "Bing bong park". It perfectly describes this massive park,(with field house, baseball/softball diamonds, swimming pool, ice rink? and running/bike paths), but the new feature of the park is the playground with so much going on it spins your head!! Musical toys standing 10 feet tall, metal xylophones, several man made hills, bouncy rides, climbing "thing-a-ma-jigs", a water feature they can splash in on hot days(bring a change of clothes or suit!),and of course all the typical swings & slides, pulleys and bars etc...They could not cram one more thing into the space and kids go absolutely bonkers when they are there! Let your child out and into the enclosed area with foamy cushion floor, sit back relax and let them wear themselves out! You will NEVER hear, "Mommy, I'm bored" at this Mega Park!

Olde Western Avenue in Blue Island, Illinois, A Cultural and Dining Experience!

You will kick yourself if you have not been down to Olde Western Avenue in Blue Island lately or EVER! There are new restaurants and businesses mixed in with the old and classic. An evening there can involve stopping in at the old Jeben's Hardware store to see what is new(or old) and then dinner at an Italian, Mexican or New Orleans Style restaurant, music at an Irish, Mexican or American Pub and dessert at a Mexican candy store! On a warm evening you can enjoy one of several patios and just sit back relax and enjoy the historic street scene dating back to the 1800's!

It's a little tricky getting to Olde Western Avenue, you take Western Avenue South, passing 129th Street keep going, you will go over the bridge, keep right and at the bottom of the bridge, turn right and then right again on to Olde Western Avenue, proceed back North on Olde Western Avenue to reach the shops and restaurants.

We have it all on the Southside including some great Patio Dining! So get out there and enjoy it while summertime in the city is here! Here are a few spots we love, if you know of other great patios please comment and I will be sure to add them!

Have fun early in the evening enjoy delicious pub food, play bean bag toss and toss a couple back at Quigley's Irish Pub at 4010 W. 111th at Pulaski, Oak Lawn in the corner of the shops.

It's Fiesta time on these lovely patios, enjoy a Margarita, a Mojito and some great Mexican cuisine at Mario's Tacos flower filled patio at 13325 S. Old Western Avenue in Blue Island or at La Fiesta at 3333 W. 111th Street in Mt. Greenwood.

The Maple Tree Inn also in Blue Island 13301 S. Old Western Avenue has a wonderful summer porch and the view here is amazing! Sit and watch the trains go over the massive steel bridge that looms in the near distance as you enjoy your New Orleans style cuisine, how perfect! See the photo above.

The ultimate bar patio is of course at Cork & Kerry's on 10614 S. Western Avenue. This legendary south side bar is the place to see and be "in the scene", this summer in particular for the college crowd.

The screened in patio at Limestone Grill at 13415 S. Ridgeland, Palos Hts.,keeps the bugs away and maximizes this wonderful casual fine dining experience.

Enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee, espresso or treat on the patio at any of our wonderful coffee shop cafes at Favia,107th and Hale, The Beverly Bakery, 10528 Western , The Blue Moon Cafe, 1742 W. 99th St. just East of the Metra Train Stop,pictured above! They have a great cozy "hidden courtyard patio" and on the weekends and for special events you can enjoy live music! Check their website for schedules.

We have some new entrants to the patio scene recently with Fat Tommys(3101 W.) and TaTa's Pizza(3019 W.)on 111th Street, located in Mt. Greenwood. They have really nice lovely outdoor seating for all to enjoy! Marco's Beef at 2547 W. 111th Street next to Cardinal Fitness also has a cute little outdoor dining area.

Beverly Yoga Center - Featuring Yoga in The Park!

I have enjoyed the benefit of taking only a few classes at the Beverly Yoga Center, located 1917 W. 103rd Street, 2nd Floor in the heart of "Downtown Beverly"773-239-YOGA (9642), but definitely plan to attend more. I found the entire experience to be enjoyable, peaceful, hard work and relaxing all at the same time. I was very surprised at how sore my body was after the first class. Not because the class was strenuous but because I had moved and manipulated body parts like never before! Now I get it! This could be addictive! I love how you do not have to pay a membership fee and can pay for one class at a time or a bunch at a time. There is so much going on at this cozy center that I can not begin to tell you. Yoga in the Park
The very popular Yoga in the Park will return this summer and be held at Ridge Park,(9626 S. Longwood Ave.) on Saturday mornings from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Yoga in the Park will run in June and July and cost $5 per class. After a long winter, this is a great opportunity for the community to come together, practice yoga and feel connected to the outdoors. The Merry Gentleman Movie - Filmed & Funded Locally starring Michael Keaton

The Merry Gentleman was funded by a local Beverly resident and filmed in many Beverly locations.

The film will be opening at Crestwood Theaters this weekend. This opening is a major development for the film and I encourage everyone to try and make it out to Crestwood. A strong opening weekend at this location would be great !

The Merry Gentleman was produced and financed by one of our own, Paul Duggan, a longtime Beverly resident. Filmed in Chicago, several scenes in the movie were shot on location at Paul's home in Beverly where he lives with his wife, Debbie, and children Samantha and Allison. Also starring in the movie is Tom Bastounes, another Chicagoan with ties to Second City.

The movie is garnering great early reactions, and in an interview with Michael Keaton, David Letterman said he loved the film, and hoped Hollywood would make more like it.

A silver Toyota Scion xB is now located at Ridge Park, 1817 W. 96th St., in a reserved parking spot generously provided by the Chicago Park District. The car is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to I-GO members. To apply for membership, just go to www.igocars.org.

I-GO members who want to reserve the car can search for it on I-GO’s website by address, neighborhood, vehicle type, or its specific vehicle ID number: 4479.

To celebrate this exciting, new joint effort with the Park District, I-GO is offering new membership applicants a special discount: $25 off the normal sign-up cost of $75. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this offer just has to enter the promotion code RIDGE50 in the “Promotions” section of the online application form.

I-GO is the only non-profit, locally based car sharing service in Chicago.
