Mikael is an interesting person whose career has been interwoven with several other known creators, including Fantomen writer Dai Darell and American creators like Neal Adams and Joe Rubenstein.

The Singh Brotherhood is on the hunt for their missing drug cargo. Little do they know they have landed in the Phantom’s backyard. What they think will be a quick and easy track, retrieve, enslave the village, and be out again turns into a dire game of cat and mouse, with the cat not realising it is actually the mouse. But it's no walk in the park for the Phantom, though; this is the jungle, and the jungle has its own mind. There is beauty in its danger, and if you can be at one with it, then you may just get out alive. 

We have 5 copies of a variant cover by Boom Tube Comics exclusive drawn by Keith Williams and one copy of Cover 1G by Natacha Bustos to give away. To enter, we will need your review and/or thoughts of the series on either the social media post promoting this podcast or on YouTube.

• Did the showing of the Phantom eyes in the first issue straight away turn the hardcore fans off?

• The Bandar are a “poison tribe,” and this story seems to suggest it’s because they’re all skilled and lethal. Does this newer definition make sense to us?
• Has the village ever been depicted in other comics by Frew or Fantomen or by creators like Lee Falk and Tony DePaul?
• Scott Waldyn called this series an “adaptation” of The Phantom in his last review. Do we agree or disagree?
• Are we happy with the balance Ray tiptoed with the white saviour concept? 
• The Singh pirates called themselves tigers on the radio. Is this a nod to the "Ten Tigers" Old Jungle Saying?
• Does the Phantom need his stripped jocks back?
• Did we have too many covers by Mad Cave Studios?
• Do we like Ray Fawkes work as the writer of the series?
• Do we like Russell Olson's work as the artist of the series?
• This series featured a quick-witted Phantom, so we like this?
• The drugs came from the mountains. Is this the Eastern Dark? The Phantom as the Guardian of the Eastern Dark was mentioned on page 9 in issue 1 by the wife of Guran's dad.
• Lee Falk never got in-depth with other characters. In this we see the minds of Asif Singh and Guran. Do we like getting to know these secondary characters better?
• Did Lee Falk ever have the Phantom think to himself as much as Ray Fawkes?
• Who's the real hero here? Guran or the Phantom?
• Do we like the Sky Band being featured?
• Should Mad Cave Studios do a Phantom crossover with another character, and if so, who?
• What's next?

At the end of us talking and remembering a legend, we include some snippets from our 3-hour chat with him from XEpisodes 97A and 97B.

Ulf Granberg (born 1945) was the editor responsible for the Swedish Phantom comic book, Fantomen, from 1972 to 2012, a duty that also included heading the Team Fantomen production of Phantom stories. He had also written almost 40 Phantom stories.

Granberg became the 12th editor of Fantomen in 1973, succeeding Per-Anders Jonsson, and continued until 1987, being succeeded by Mats Jönsson. In 2003 he returned as editor, succeeding Petter Sjölund. He did, however, remain in charge of the production between his two periods as an editor, serving as editor-in-chief.

He retired from his Phantom duties with Fantomen 9/2012, after a total of 1001 issues. He was succeeded by Mikael Sol as editor for Fantomen and by Claes Reimerthi and Hans Lindahl as editors for the Team Fantomen production of stories.

What this bio doesn’t include is the behind-the-scenes stuff that many of us take for granted.

• He was important in the hiring of several key creators from around the world, including Cesar Spadari, Norman Worker, Jamie Vallve, Carlos Crus, Hans Lindahl, Claes Reimerthi, Dai Darell, Donne Avvenell, Felmang, Ferri, Joan Boix, Tony DePaul, Paul Ryan, Graham Nolan, David Bishop, Georges Bess, Kari Leppanen, Lennart Moberg, Sal Velluto, Bob McLeod, and Dick Giorando.
• He added to the lore of the Phantom and filling in the gaps.
• He created the first timeline of all 21 Phantoms. Even giving Lee Falk the list.
• He created the first Phantom map of Bangalla and the countries around Bangalla. The Bangalla map was very much liked by Lee Falk who asked for a copy.
• He added to the first Phantom adventures on how he got the skull ring and how he became known as the man who cannot die.
• He oversaw the origin of Devil.
• He oversaw the creation of Dogai Singh, perhaps the most dreaded Singh pirate, and of course Sandal Singh.
• He created the ‘Brain Trust’ or Team Fantomen which was a group of creators who would meet once a year and map out the theme of stories for the next year or period of time.
• He oversaw the Lubanga storyline, which was controversial but also impactful, which saw Luaga lose the presidency of Bangalla. 
• In 1999 after Lee Falk's death, the newspaper strip almost was cancelled. He pushed the continuous nature of it and suggested Paul Ryan and Tony DePaul/Claes Reimerthi to take over.

This year there has been some more news that Netflix is ‘likely’ going to be the platform to distribute the show. However, the Phantom has had some false dawns ever since Tom Tyler donned the uniform in 1943. According to DeepWoods.org, a story cannot be a Phantom story without these sayings appearing more than once in a while. These sayings are in many ways responsible for the mystifying aura seen in Phantom stories.

We look at what are these Old Jungle Sayings and go over some of our personal favourites or sayings that stick in our memories. There is 100+ in various subtle changes to choose from!

We go all nerdy and look at the origins of them in the Phantom universe, from Old Native Sayings to Old Jungle Sayings. We compare them from a cultural impact and psychological role compared to real-life proverbs and religious mantras.

The comparison doesn't stop there as we compare our Phantom's Old Jungle Sayings with oral proverbs preserving legendary heroes like Maui the Maori (New Zealand) demigod, and fear-based lore enforcing social norms, which you can see in the Bedouin, Apache, and Amazonian tribes from around the world.

Our final step in our nerdom travels down Old Jungle Sayings is we compare this storytelling element to comic characters like Batman, Tarzan, Judge Dredd, Conan, and the famous meme master Chuck Norris.

The Phantom is the only character with all of 

1) Formally repeated, structured sayings (like folklore or scripture)

2) A generational myth actively maintained by the sayings ("The Phantom never dies") and 

3) A tribal culture that embraces and perpetuates the myth as truth

Batman and Zorro come close in terms of urban/fear-based mythology but lack the ritualistic repetition and communal cultural buy-in.

This may end up being our smartest, most in-depth, and nerdiest Phantom podcast ever! We hope you enjoy it!

We have interviewed and chatted with a few collectors like Pete Klaus (Episode #88), Jon Cookson (#75), Antonio DiDio (#258), Ohm Roy (#108) and Gary Horne (#64) but one thing we have not addressed much is what happens to our collections when it is time to pass the collection onto the next person?

With the Phantom census currently open we are gathering data and information from hundreds of Phantom fans around the world telling us what they like, do not like and want to see happen with their Phantom. We wanted to focus on some of the questions we ask and that is about the stories and what makes them great and enjoyable for us fans.

Annuals are nothing new from around the world with British comics publishing them in hardcover albums during the 1950’s to the 1980’s as well as other countries publishing them. Frew published their first annual in 1991 and it was an instant hit. 

Frew published their first one in 1991 and it was an instant hit. Rumours are that it sold out overnight and many collectors bought dozens as investments. Ever since, Frew has released an annual. Bar the odd year (3?), a replica edition of the Frew comics have been released. Loved by some and loathed by others but they are a staple along with the annual.

Since the Frew Crew has stood in the gap left by Jim Shepherd, they have released themed annuals with War, artists, Girl Phantom, Cowboy Phantoms, Animals of Edan and now its The Phantom vs The Monsters.

Anthony Spay is the illustrator of the art from the game who has Frew and Team Fantomen credits as writer and illustrator of the comics and the third guest is Matthew Cutler who is the 2D animator for Art of Play and is behind the magic of the Phantom and Diana fighting against tyranny on our Switches, PlayStation's & X-Boxes.

For those who came in late, we have chatted with Anthony Spay before in Episode #188 (May 2021) and Ash Nicholls in Episode #242 (Feb 2023), #251 (May 2023) and #268 (Dec 2023). This is the first time Matthew Cutler has joined us on a podcast and he starts of the podcast explaining to us what he does for Art of Play and the Phantom video game.

We spend an hour talking shop and geeking out with the three creators as they spill the beans about behind the scenes information on the game. Some of the topics we chat about are:

Among the highlights were appearances by talented Phantom cover artists Jamie Johnson, Alex Trpcevski, and Lauren Marshall. These renowned artists, each of them stars across many walks of fandom but known by Phantom phans for their work with Frew Publications, showcased their work with a range of prints, comics and commissions available . They each have recent, current, and upcoming covers which really added emphasis to the currency of our favourite character. Lauren, Alex and Jamie participated in an entertaining Phantom-themed sketch-off, much to the delight of fans who got to witness their creative process firsthand while peppering them with questions all the while.

Saturday was packed with social activities that brought the Phantom community even closer. The day began with a casual breakfast hosted by Chris and Kim Hill, where fans were treated to informal catch-ups and a delightful brekky to accompany a tour of Chris' Minor and Major Treasure Rooms in their newly established Skull Cave. It was a delight to see Chris' thoughtful displays of some incredibly rare and diverse Phantom memorabilia and connect over our shared passions.

The evening saw the inaugural Brisbane Phantom Phans’ Dinner, coordinated by the extraordinary Christopher Schaffer. This intimate gathering was set in a wonderful atmosphere, with a delicious menu and excellent company. A poignant toast was made to departed Phantom luminaries, including Lee Falk, Jim Shepherd and Richard Fry. Another highlight of the evening was a question and answer session with Shane Foley, Frew cover and story artist, who shared insights into his work and experiences, as well as passing some of his original art around for all to see. We're pleased to report that most of it got returned to him! Attendees were delighted to hear from Shane, making the dinner an even more memorable event.

Brisbane Supanova 2024 was more than just a convention for those of us with purple in our veins. Thanks to Christopher's initiative and the support of others, it was a testament to the enduring legacy of the Phantom and the vibrant community that continues to celebrate this beloved character. For those who couldn’t attend, be sure to listen to the related podcast, where you can hear interviews with the three artists at Supanova, their sketch-off, and the Q&A with Shane Foley at the dinner.

Some of the secrets they tell us is that the celebrational issue will be in October 2025 and will feature as a double extended issue. Some of the reprint stories through out the year will be key classic stories that hold a special place in the history of the comic.

On top of the birthday celebrations, we also learn the following:

• Some of the writers writing stories for 2025 will be Andreas Eriksson, Pidde Andersson, David Bishop and John Rassy who is back after a 7 year hiatus. 
• Some of these creators will be writing two part stories.
• Some of the artists who will be drawing stories for 2025 are phan phav Janusz Ordon, Kasia Nie for her second story and Percy Ochoa who will be drawing his first Team Fantomen story who has previously drawn several Frew stories.
• The Phantom will be visiting Sweden and Australia.
• The theme for the hardcover collection will be stories from the 1970's. Can you guess the theme?
• 2025 will see other covers tailored for events like conventions like they did for Uppsala comic convention in 2024.

In addition to answering questions about 2025, we took the time to ask other generic editorial questions. For example:

For those who have come in late, The Major Treasure Room houses artefacts from around the world throughout history that the Phantom has rescued or has been given to by people he has interacted with. The sole aim is to protect these items from fire, flood and destruction.

Throughout the past 60 odd years when it was first introduced, we have had stories created by from various Newspaper, Team Fantomen, Fratelli Spada and RGE creators. There has been nearly 100 different artefacts shown or have had stories written about them.

When the room was conceived by Lee Falk, the world was crazy coming off the second world war with various looted treasures being found. However is that still the case and should they be returned?

Our second and last Phantom hard question we will discuss in this podcast is the power of the digital comic. We have seen Lightning Strikes announcing their new monthly digital anthology, Comics Kingdom adding more importance with their digital daily comic website and three comic publishers in Frew, Fantomen and Mad Cave Studios releasing digital content.

Is it time for the Phantom to be pushed digitally more? Can the phantom comic survive without a digital presence?

During this podcast we will hear from a panel discussion between Arild Wærness, Cormac Hughes, Knut Robert Knutsen and Kristian Hellesund. They will talk about their Phantom contributions including the Lightning Strikes comics.

The other Phantom artist we hear from are Mike Collins as he talks about about his history with the character, who he would like to see drawing the Phantom, his favourite stories, comparing him to other comic heroes and how to write stories from an African perspective.

As you would expect, a lot of the panels and discussions were held in the native spoken language which while are not included in this podcast will be uploaded on our website and YouTube Channel. We will hear from phan, writer and editor Andreas Eriksson, fans writers of the Norwegian story that was originally published in Lightning Strikes Arild Wærness and Knut Robert Knutsen plus an interview from Kristian Hellesund with Fantomen writer Sverre Arnes who wrote 20 stories in the 1990's.

Alongside the print, will be the inks over blue lines on A3 paper - that is 25 pieces of original art also for sale. Four of these will be sold at the LFMBEC dinner.

All funds raised will be for the Westmead Children's Hospital.
